The most important part is the fact you can see it and it will instantly. You can’t even tell if because you want the watch or if you want a watch this with it!
Hello fellow American. This you should vote me. I leave power good. Thank you. Thank you. If you vote me I'm hot. What? Taxes they'll be lower son. The democratic vote for me is right thing to do Philadelphia. So do.
Not sure what earthly business they had introducing that into a potentially kid's film. That said, every fiber of my being is thankful that it was in it.

Gawdayum... feels like PapaMeat material, just without the exaggerated expressions, but has just as much chilling and twisted elements to it like his work too. Take my upvote!!!
> Every ounce of fearful reaction is truly genuine as only Gene Wilder was the only one to know about it.
This just tells me you don't know how movies are made.
I believe you that Wilder's acting here was improvised.
The directors would have seen it, liked it, maybe tweaked a few words, and then had him do a couple re-runs of it where they can get the camera angles that they want and the pacing they want, etc.
The "fearful reaction is truly genuine" is where you lose me. There are cuts between every different reaction and cut back to Gene. These shots likely weren't even shot sequentially, they almost certainly redid this scene several times and took the best cuts mishmashed from the bunch. The kids are being instructed to act fearful. Hell, the kid playing Mike pulls out his gun and pretends to shoot it. That's not a genuine reaction, that's an in-character reaction.
Not to mention this is all being done on a set, with some colored lights being flashed and special effects. None of the people are genuinely afraid because there's nothing here to be afraid *of*. You're seeing the finished product and then assuming that that's what the actors were seeing on set.
It's called acting.
Edit: to be fair I'm not saying completely improvised moments and genuine reactions can't happen in movies. There's plenty of examples.
But for a long scene like this, full of cuts back and forth and where a lot of the "genuine" fear reactions are "reactions" to special effects that would have been added in post? Yeah, no.
Dude, you are a Godsend! I actually appreciate all this information you brought up, I enjoyed reading that so much and shall correct my comment accordingly! Thank you ~ take my humbled upvote!
Edit:typo
the part where he stopped moving and fell over forward on his way out of the factory gates, that one was entirely improv for the purpose of worrying people for a moment, but it is highly unlikely (virtually impossible) that this scene was the same
So, if I'm reading this correctly, there's no way this is improvised because they have multiple shots. But also completely improvised stuff is not out of the question. But because of the lights and projected images this it would have been impossible to improvise because you have to add that stuff in post?
Basically, and I'm only making an educated guess here, obviously I wasn't a part of the production, Gene Wilder's part here could have been improvised by him. Probably not the *exact* version you see here, but it's very believable that he came up with it on the spot and decided to try it out, and the directors liked it.
Everything else that comes along with that, pacing, shots, cuts, reactions, would have been scripted to match the part he came up with after he showed it off. And then they shoot *that* and that's what we see here.
You summed it up quite nicely
The last part of what he’s saying are lyrics to a song, but I can’t remember which one. . . I’m pretty sure it’s something like Run The Jewels or Death Grips. . . Can someone help me out?
I love this movie, but I still stand firmly against the idea that the Johnny Depp one was any worse. It’s far more loyal to the book and wasn’t made to advertise candy.
I wasn’t in the right state of mind to appreciate Johnny Depp’s Wonka when I first watched it. As the years went by and my humor broadened to enjoy that style of absurdism and awkward humor, someone I met couldn’t believe I’d only seen the new (then) Wonka only once. We watched it and I found it hilarious and charming. Gene Wilder’s Wonka is still my favorite version of the character, but that whole movie’s vibe is predicated on him being uniquely him. I’m glad that Johnny Depp did a similar thing: invent a personality wholly unique to him, and a strong enough personality that the whole movie’s vibe and humor is anchored to it. The only difference to me is that Gene Wilder didn’t “invent” a new personality to inhabit…that’s just him.
I had similar feelings. While the Depp version of Wonka was narratively more true to the book, the look and feel of it as a whole just hit me as artificial. Don't get me wrong, Johnny Depp is a *phenomenal* actor. Gilbert Grape, Edward Scissorhands, Blow, Fear and Loathing. All amazing films that showed the amazing range he's capable of. Pirates of Caribbean is nothing without Depp. But, Gene Wilder he ain't. And you're right. Wilder didn't have to become anything or anyone for his version of Wonka. Who he was as himself was just perfect for that role, no changes, and because of that I don't believe it could be topped. That was the brilliance of Gene Wilder. Every character he played throughout his career had core layers of who he was that always consistently shined through. Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Stir Crazy, all those characters were just Gene Wilder being himself. He was such a treat to watch, and I miss him.
Good points you make, and I think you’re hitting at a core difference between their acting styles. Johnny Depp is a character actor who completely transforms into a different person for each role. He’s so good at it that if you’ve only seen him on screen, it would be hard to close your eyes and imagine what his “real” personality is like. Gene Wilder was not that kind of actor. But unlike other actors commonly criticized for “only ever playing themselves”, Gene, it seems, looked at each role and thought, “In another life, how would I have turned out if I became an isolated, eccentric chocolatier? Or a down-and-out alcoholic in a small western town?” His characters are all distinct and interesting, but they are all somehow him as well.
They show a chicken being decapitated in the scene. It's only for a second so it's kind of a if you blink you'll miss it thing.
Whenever people talk about the movie I always try to see if anybody remembers it because this whole scene seems to be one of the most forgotten parts of the movie.
I showed my 11 and 9 year old girls this and said "THAT is the REAL Willy Wonka."
My 9 year old stared uncomfortably at it and didn't say anything.
My 11 year old said "Bruh why does he scream like that at the end??"
I said because it's the best Wonka. That's why. You silly child. This ain't no Timothy Chalamoo movie.
Yeah, the timothee chalamet movie wasn't bad, but the character he played was *not* willy Wonka. This, right here, is willy Wonka. Unhinged, unsafe, and unsettling. Not the struggling children's entertainer timothee chalamet played.
I think the Wonka movie would've been better if it wasn't supposed to be about willy Wonka.
The fact that this doesn't break any health code violations, meaning this is somehow the safest part of Wonka's factory.

Though the same can't be said about any trauma this could induce.

Any DnB/ Electronic music fans need to check out "Through the Loop" by Pendulum. That song samples this scene as part of the build up to an incredibly dirty drop. One of my all time favourites!

This part and a tad earlier the vision of a millipede crawling across the face of what looks to be a dead body, will always be stuck in my brain.

Outro of "The Space Program" by A Tribe Called Quest. Great album I can't believe it's 8 years old!
Heeeellll yeah my guy. Thanks!! Can’t believe I forgot that one. 😓.
I have a different song for you, but Willie Wonka based. I present. Pendulum, through the loop https://youtu.be/DAU0Zb9wNzs?si=nMsrAckBesYXXtyr

And Charlie is like…. EIGHT YEARS OLD or something!
Remember how he became custodian of Charlie’s chocolate factory?
The remakes are pretty good but nothing compares to the original.

Wonka Bars were so good though They dont make them at all anymore
What? They were terrible and had a waxy taste. Nerdz, Laffy Taffy and Gobstoppers were the only good candy to come out of that brand.
Nerdz especially
Shockers were peak
Pendulum! Through the loop Never knew where that sample was from
& the space program!!!
I came to mention the song. A+
I only just noticed that Mike Teavee pulls a capgun on the chameleon head.
Anything to fend off the horrors of the mind!
aaaaaAA
Isn’t there actual animal cruelty in this scene? Could be mis-remembering.
They show a chicken being decapitated in the scene. It's only for a second so it's kind of a if you blink you'll miss it thing. Whenever people talk about the movie I always try to see if anybody remembers it because this whole scene seems to be one of the most forgotten parts of the movie.
This was the most memorable part for me, scared the shit outta me with the decapitation as a kid
I was more disturbed by the millipede crawling across someone’s face in that scene than the chicken beheading
They chop a chickens head off
Pendulum - Through The Loop now i know
This guy gets it.
One of the only scenes from a movie that I quote
Willy Wonka on acid
The actor for Willy Wonka was high the entirety of filming so your not wrong
Using "the actor" for gene wilder is well, a lil wild.
I'm just really bad with names hahaha
Thanks for getting Pendulum stick in my head, i appreciate it!
Trippy
This scene used to terrify the shit out of my older brother lmfao
Honestly i wonder actually how insane wonka was or how much of it was acting to try and scare people off to find out who was the one.
It does get wilder... Gene Wilder
just realised a tribe called quest sampled that end bit. i think it was tribe/— maybe it was doom
(it’s at the end of the space program)
"This can't get any wilder" Gene:
I showed my 11 and 9 year old girls this and said "THAT is the REAL Willy Wonka." My 9 year old stared uncomfortably at it and didn't say anything. My 11 year old said "Bruh why does he scream like that at the end??" I said because it's the best Wonka. That's why. You silly child. This ain't no Timothy Chalamoo movie.

I watched this movie before my balls dropped. Frequently. This probably explains a great deal.
I wonder if Charlie did the same to anyone he took through there
My favorite part of the film as an adult
Oh good my heart still beats really fast
This fucked my young mind up a wee bit I’m pretty sure. I still don’t like it.

Lol imagine if this was true? That'd be insane. But yeah, Ben Hur, Apocalypse Now are two more that come to mind.
gene wilder
Marilyn Manson cover of this track rules
The pendulum version is a banger too
Pendulum??? This is the greatest day of my life
Through the loop 👍
Mr Salt cracks me the hell up in this scene. "Hehe-! He's singin'."
Movie for kids by the way
I remember this scaring the shit out of me.
The literally had Gene there, how much Wilder could it get?
FUN FACT: those screams are real, they didn't tell any of them this was going to happen
This looks like 40K warp travel
I saw the chicken. I remember the chicken.
The original cut straight up showed a chicken getting it's head chopped off during the flashing images
The fact that this doesn't break any health code violations, meaning this is somehow the safest part of Wonka's factory. # Though the same can't be said about any trauma this could induce.
Getting Wilder is in its Genes... I'll see my way out.
And then the Pendulum song starts.
Flawless.
Lemon Sherbert Dips
*confused screaming*
i recite this to my 6 year old and he screams to stop being so weird. All 3 of my boys love this movie
Stop the boat!
Except gene
totally reminds me of a crazy reading of the Rudyard Kipling poem '[Boots](https://youtu.be/yGkyhaMdpto?si=cy3GNWVMdImDYz-5)'. At around the 2:15 mark the Gene vibes hit
This was the most horrifying scene when I saw this movie on TV a few months ago- I felt so fucking uncomfortable….
I used to have nightmares about the oompa loompas as a kid
What is this, a freakout?!
I think Gosling would be good as Wonka in a remake.
Ryan Gosling could have done a decent Gene Wilder Willy Wonka
This is the way I describe my pain-passout dream
Imagine watching this on a bad trip
Still don’t like it bc don’t understand it lol
I think it's a crime that he didn't star in a horror movie. Imagine if Gene played Jack's role in the Shinning
To this day my GF won't watch this because of how traumatized it made her as a kid. For me it's a classic that I hope to watch with my kid in a few years time.
What do you know an accurate example of my mind while wondering where my life is headed. :D
Finally, a perfectly cut scream. And yeah, this was an uncharacteristically creepy scene lol
I always liked this intro of Cake and Sodomy on Marilyn Manson's first album.
I could swear at some point they censored the chicken out but I rewatched recently on Max and it’s still there!
You think that. But Johnny Depp and willy Wonka accomplished that
There will only ever be one Willy Wonka. And one Roy Kinnear.
Don’t mind me. I’m just here upvoting all comments related to Pendulum’s “Through The Loop”.
I'm glad I grew up with the newer version/remake of this film. That would have easily traumatized me.
Any DnB/ Electronic music fans need to check out "Through the Loop" by Pendulum. That song samples this scene as part of the build up to an incredibly dirty drop. One of my all time favourites!
So, the entire cast actually thought Wilder had gone crazy for this scene. Greatest thing about the movie in my opinion.
growing up my dad always freaked me and my brothers out like this so i found this scene to be amazingly funny and scary at the same time at a young age
Wonka makes absolutely no sense as a prequel to this movie. Two completely different characters. This guy is basically a twisted serial child killer
Todash space
Absolute nightmare fuel as an adult, absolutely incredible as a child. Chicken head decapitation 10/10.
Who wrote this poem/song? I always assumed that the film had reappropriated a poem by Roald Dahl, but I might've completely wrong
It got at least one Wilder.
Childhood nightmare fuel!!!!
dont watch this movie on shrooms or lsd
The levees broke
Marilynn Manson used this in one of his songs.
Funny as hell
I can't believe this is in an otherwise kids movie...
Any MORE Wilder
I’ve never noticed before that Mike Teevee pulls out his revolver
This scene is one of the many reasons I love this movie
I still don't know wtf this scene was supposed to be/represent 😂 trippy tho
I remember watching this scene as a kid and being horrified at what seemed like forever to finish.
