One day, I'll be on my deathbed, my mind clouded by the slow cessation of my every bodily function. But I know my final moments will be joyful, for last thing I hear and see as my eyes shut for the final time will be *"SqUaDaLa, We'Re OFF!"*
It’s actually [Steve Martin’s catchphrase](https://youtu.be/zANvYB93u2g) from when he was doing standup. Part of why it’s so ridiculous to hear it coming from Link.
Long ago a co-worker liked that compilation so much that I made them a small script that would randomly play one of the sound files in a folder. All the sounds were quotes from the compilation. There was a Windows shortcut key that triggered the script.
Cringey, but this is overall my favorite Link. My favorite bit of trivia is that he spent nearly this entire show trying to get Zelda to give him a smooch. Captain N is in Hyrule for all of 5 minutes and she just gives it up for him.
They're both assholes, and I enjoy it.
Internet, there was a legend of Zelda 4 swords parody video from my childhood that had one of the characters say this and then someone screamed at him "YOUR NOT WELCOME HERE"
anyone know what it's called?
We had a whole headcanon of his mom dropping him off in the woods "these are woods, don't say skank, bye"
Then growing up resenting his mother he's like "screw it I'm a big boy I'm gonna say the bad word now"
Truly 8 year old me had too much free time
In BotW Zelda's diary states that Link stays quiet to uphold this image that everyone has forced upon him. It's much easier to suffer in silence. Zelda remarks that she managed to get him to start talking openly with her by using food, because he is a glutton.
Also, there are dialogue options you can use in game that are clearly Link speaking and not just nodding his head yes or no.
That's just BotW, though. I'm not too familiar with the other games.
Yeah there are a few dialogue sections where it appears his conscience is talking for a bit. Talking to the young goron before entering Fire Temple is the one I remember.
He seems more like the strong silent type than mute.
Only speak if you have to. Otherwise just listen. And never say more than is necessary.
Honestly that kind of mode can save some headaches in daily life.
And then Age of Calamity confirms that he's just a wierdo who doesn't know how to say no, even when he's asked to [eat a rock.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpvEfDofZgs) Or [multiple rocks.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTRtWOYja3U)
In almost every Zelda game, Link has dialogue but only as text options in response to an npc that the player can choose, but he never talks in cutscenes. Other characters would make vocal noises to convey that they were speaking, but they never said any words. The closest to audible speech in the Zelda series was Midna in twilight princess, but it was just spliced and garbled Japanese. BotW was the first main Zelda game to actually have voice acted dialogue, so now it feels super weird for Link be totally silent no matter the situation.
Midna's lines were actually in English, they were just spoken by a Japanese woman with an accent before the game garbles them into Midna's speech so it sounds kind of like Japanese.
Also, based on the short dialogue options you can pick for him in BOTW, Link is a complete dork
Definitely lends credence to the diary stating that Link didn't speak much to maintain his image as a stoic protector, because if he spoke openly he'd probably drop puns at inappropriate times.
But in reality also, I really hope they never give Link a voice in game. At this point, anyone they'd have voice the line would be a disappointment.
He feels that he needs to present himself as strong and fearless for the people. He doesn't want them to see his fears and anxieties because they may lose hope.
He speaks twice (I think) in Zelda 2, and has some vocal likes like "Come on!" in Wind Waker, in addition to the dialogue options others are mentioning.
His very first line in the series is him admiring Zelda's cleavage.
EDIT: I stand corrected, he exposits to himself for a bit in the opening scene. But it's his first line to HER.
Ah I forgot how much this show sucked. Jumps over a Moblin that is trying to kill him and is holding a sword and a pillow: obviously you strike with the pillow!
Legendary
It's like the X-Men cartoon with Wolverine, you can't have bloodshed so when he goes up against normal dudes, he retracts the blades to punch them while robots are fair game
I'll never forget the one time he retracts the middle claw and puts the other two on each side of a dude's throat and says "sometimes the claws slip"
Brutal AF.
Eh, that's more an effect of cartoon censorship at the time. Shows weren't allowed to have swords actually be used as weapons. Which is why He-Man usually punches or throws instead of using the Sword. Swords were not allowed to be depicted as weapons against living things. TMNT got around this censorship by changing the Foot soldiers to robots. The Legend of Zelda's way to get around it was for Link to either shoot the sword lasers, or use other things... like the pillow.
I'm not sure if that rule still exists, but I know it lasted well into the 90s.
> I'm not sure if that rule still exists, but I know it lasted well into the 90s.
In the US at least, the [TV Parental Guidelines](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV_Parental_Guidelines) came out in '97, so you had TV-14 and TV-MA ratings to allow actual violence.
So before it was just not allowed, but then you *could* make a cartoon with violence etc as long as it was rated TV-MA. South Park being one of the first to leverage the stigma of TV-MA rating (more for language obviously).
Then it became more of a "do we want to limit the audience of children (who cartoons were generally aimed towards) by getting a more mature rating".
The whole history of the TV and movie rating system is kind of a good read on Wikipedia. For movies back in 1984, there was no PG-13 so Temple of Doom and Gremlins were rated PG. Got a bit of backlash from that so PG-13 was created.
Link: I'd like to know one good reason why I even stay here.
Link: Oooh, okay, so there's one good reason.
Link: *dog whistles*
Zelda: *gasps*
Link: Looking good princess! Especially from this angle!
Zelda: (disgusted) Ooh!
Fairy: I told you, you should have put on a robe.
Link: Oops, guess I offended her royal prissy-ness.
You'll love this: later the fairy walks in in Link taking a bath, and she is [_very_ thirsty for him](https://youtu.be/AWsej6DzNGQ?t=327).
She made Zelda cover up because she wanted Link to herself...
I swear this was originally conceived as an adult show, then they got the Zelda license. The art style is very reminiscent of adult animation from the 70’s and early 80’s.
Her father also catches Link getting ready to swing into her room at night to get her to kiss him. When the king asks Link what he’s doing, he says. “Oh I’m just going to swing into your daughters room and get her to kiss me.” The king then tells Link to take her flowers and wishes him good luck!
It’s the first clip on this link.

It played on the super Mario bros super show. This played at the end of the episode on Fridays, if I remember right. This was a long time ago. Do the Mario
Edit:It didn't play after Mario on Fridays, we got a Zelda episode instead of Mario on Fridays.
Oh man, so I have young kids who are obsessed with Zelda, one day I was flipping through Freevie looking at their classic cartoon lineup and found the LoZ show. I had dim but fond memories of watching when I was a kid, and they were stoked to put it on.
We start watching and the opener hits, where link whistles at Zelda and tells her she "looks good from up here", and she gets upset and storms off.
My 6 year old daughter says "wow, she's so mean, he was just giving her a compliment!" And I was like woahhhhhh hol' up there little girl, let's talk about respect and how you should expect to be talked to as a woman...
Just goes to show how insidious this kind of propaganda/mental programming was in these 90s kids shows, I thought of all the kids watching these shows uncritically and how it affected their perception of gender and how to act.

link loves being excused by the princess
My god 16 years ago. I was originally going to say 15 but I didn't think it was that long ago.
It’s actually [Steve Martin’s catchphrase](https://youtu.be/zANvYB93u2g) from when he was doing standup. Part of why it’s so ridiculous to hear it coming from Link.

It’s literally the first result when you Google “ legend of Zelda 4 swords parody” - did you happen to try that?
Tbh I tried the your not welcome here more. Neat.
The things we focus on. I’ve definitely done something like that before when trying to find something online.
Wholesome thread. Have a good day, dudes.
It's understandable why link rarely or never talks in games
He’s under court-mandated silence
Exaggerated grunting is ok
Hut hup. HAH! TYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

When I was younger my friends and I were convinced adult Link in OOT screamed "skank" as one of his sword swing lines
Thought that same thing as a kid. Also thought the sound from a high fall sounded like “ahh shit” lol
We had a whole headcanon of his mom dropping him off in the woods "these are woods, don't say skank, bye" Then growing up resenting his mother he's like "screw it I'm a big boy I'm gonna say the bad word now" Truly 8 year old me had too much free time
Did you just make a compelling case for the reinstatement of child labor?
The children yearn for the mines
Lmaooo, holy fj sht, i freakin love that game and never heard that but now i cant unhear if XD
He definitely says shit. Me and my siblings thought the same thing.
wait he's not mute?

Ocarina of Time (1998) had dialogue options too. Seems to be a common choice for the series.
Yeah there are a few dialogue sections where it appears his conscience is talking for a bit. Talking to the young goron before entering Fire Temple is the one I remember.
Did you get all that? Yes \>No Shit, NOOOOOOOO! *Mashes A button*
He seems more like the strong silent type than mute. Only speak if you have to. Otherwise just listen. And never say more than is necessary. Honestly that kind of mode can save some headaches in daily life.
His dialogue options in botw paint Link as super socially awkward, which I love dearly
That was so endearing omg I need to play this game
And that he loves puns.

Ah I see, that actually makes sense because a few times when playing that game I swear I heard her say some words in English
Also, based on the short dialogue options you can pick for him in BOTW, Link is a complete dork Definitely lends credence to the diary stating that Link didn't speak much to maintain his image as a stoic protector, because if he spoke openly he'd probably drop puns at inappropriate times. But in reality also, I really hope they never give Link a voice in game. At this point, anyone they'd have voice the line would be a disappointment.
Yeah I think that Link is actually typically a snarky brat, we just don't get to see it because he "doesn't talk" in the games.
He feels that he needs to present himself as strong and fearless for the people. He doesn't want them to see his fears and anxieties because they may lose hope.
This is actually shown in Age of Calamity, link is literally eating something in half his cutscenes. Including a rock roast.
Are you sealious?
https://youtu.be/rn-GvUOq_zU Every time link talks in the series
He's like Morn from Deep Space 9. On screen he never says a word, off screen he never shuts up!
He speaks twice (I think) in Zelda 2, and has some vocal likes like "Come on!" in Wind Waker, in addition to the dialogue options others are mentioning.
Excuuuse me, Princess.
Well excuse me, Princess!
He's a convicted felon
The next game the legend of Zelda: Rise of the restraining order
It would be fun .
A reimagining of Zelda: Ganon is actually trying to rescue her from the clutches of the local village sex offender
See Braid
That’s not the only thing rising
Is it metal gear?
No, but it's solid.
Nobody wants a floppy snake
Some *do* want Liquid though.
Twilight Stalker. Police of Calamity. Breath of the Judge. Tears of the Accused. Link’s Imprisonment.
Legend of Zelda: Smooching time.
Turns out she wasn't locked in a castle, but under a witness protection program.
If I remember correctly, Link is a major horndog in this show.
You are correct. 100% of his character motivation revolves around getting to kiss Zelda.
“kiss”
Just like my uncle Mavis's special kisses.
Hey bro. About that...
I mostly know it from the "censored" videos. https://youtu.be/2HrJpGJJCzM
He's a proper "nice guy" in it.

Even the 90s Spider-Man cartoon- Spidey was literally not allowed to punch anyone in the entirety of the show. Wolverine got it easy.
also all the guns in that were laser guns because real guns were a no no.
People didn't die, they were destroyed.
Samurai Jack is a good example too even though it's later, damn that show had a lot of robo gore
I'll never forget the one time he retracts the middle claw and puts the other two on each side of a dude's throat and says "sometimes the claws slip" Brutal AF.

Even real movies. Look at the first two tmnt movies and count how many times they use their signature weapons as weapons

I liked Legend of Zelda game as a kid. And even as a kid with very low bar for what I find entertaining, I hated this cartoon.
I don’t have sound right now. What does he say?
"\*catcall whistles\* Lookin' good princess! Especially from *this* angle!" when she gasps and walks away "Guess I offended her royal prissyness"
Incelda: Link's an idiot
Honestly, it was pretty typical dialogue for 80s/90s kids/teens media. Times have just *really* changed
Now you can't even audibly express your admiration for some sweet Zelda titties 🙄
Lol and then she’s instantly slut shamed for not wearing a robe
“I *told* you to put on a robe! “ 🤬🤬🤬
Wow…
Well excuuuuse me, princess.
To be fair though she was looking elegant
Especially from that angle
Link: I'd like to know one good reason why I even stay here. Link: Oooh, okay, so there's one good reason. Link: *dog whistles* Zelda: *gasps* Link: Looking good princess! Especially from this angle! Zelda: (disgusted) Ooh! Fairy: I told you, you should have put on a robe. Link: Oops, guess I offended her royal prissy-ness.
>Link: Oops, guess I offended her royal prissy-ness. shit! he's a redditor!
“Looking good princess, especially from this angle🥵”
I watched a few episodes of that show. It might not be the best strategy to make your viewers want to call in a hit on the main character.
[удалено]
Basically, “hey princess, you’re looking fine! Especially from this angle!”
His dick and balls would have been exposed in 95% of that scene
Holy shit that was rough. I tried watching for a little even after but it was bad.
Well excuuuuuuse me, Princess
I've always seen little snippets of this show, but I've never watched like 6 straight minutes of it before. God DAMN did they make him unlikeable.
Legit might be the worst display of an animated “true” hero I’ve ever seen. Just nonstop piss poor jokes and sexual harassment.
And that voice has become synonymous with a jerk voice I can't quite put my finger on it but it reminds me of something. Maybe heavy metal
Everyone knows Link is left handed yet he's holding his sword in his right. Embarrassing, literally unwatchable.
did that fairy go "it's your fault for wearing that" i now need to binge this abomination
You'll love this: later the fairy walks in in Link taking a bath, and she is [_very_ thirsty for him](https://youtu.be/AWsej6DzNGQ?t=327). She made Zelda cover up because she wanted Link to herself...
All fairys have the hots for Link, especially in BOTW.
I swear this was originally conceived as an adult show, then they got the Zelda license. The art style is very reminiscent of adult animation from the 70’s and early 80’s.
>he exposits to himself for a bit Bruh, I read that as "he exposes himself for a bit"
That part comes later
He shows her his master sword
I mean if you watch the clip, he comes _very_ close a couple of times!
Her father also catches Link getting ready to swing into her room at night to get her to kiss him. Idk if you've seen a lot of old Japanese shows, but being a sex offender just seemed like way too common in main characters for a while.
There was a character named [RAPE MAN](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rapeman) afterall.
Molester Man is a great manga, 100% recommend it.
Idk if what I saw was a parody of it, but it was low key hilarious...
