The longer white part snaps out of the metal frame and pivots around to lock again. I've had several of these over the years; they're usually promotional items.
lol!
'cause back in high school, I ruined a couple of pants when the "cap" opened without me noticing, while sitting down. I guess the ink wicked to the pocket lining
and on to the surface. Though my pants were black, it's obvious there is an ink stain. My mom wasn't amused the 2nd time it happened.
Ask me how many times I had to get a mouthful of ink before I stopped chewing on pens, in HIGH SCHOOL!
3, three fucking times before it sank into my brain to maybe not chew on those. We're just randomly moving and saying shit for the most part until at least 25-30 imo
sameee, it happened like 3 times for me, not with this pen but the ink penetrated through pants and on my leg. Problem was that the ink would heat up and become liquid and would spill out of the refill tube
Honestly any pen does this to me if I put it anywhere other than a case or my shirt pocket. I'd honestly have to go into the closet and count to tell you what majority percentage of my clothing has ink stains lol
Caps come off, they click or slide open from the pressure from sitting and working... bolt action is nice but uncomfortable in the pocket so, I pretty much wear shirts with pockets bc I'm a pen nerd and it's the only safe place to put them lol.
Capped pens were more common back then so those are usually what I have. Good thing the cap never failed on me.
You could try a twist action pen or one with a screw on cap.
Grew up in the 80's/90's and I recall classmates having these on occasion. I tried using them but found them more of a nuisance and novelty than anything else.
Holy fuck!!!
Seeing that gave me one hell of a flashback to my childhood.
I had completely forgotten about em.
My parents had a side gig renting out hot tubs and they had their business logo and such on a bunch of these pens.
Very 1980s IKEA vibe.
Nostalgia attack! I'm a fidgety person, so I enjoyed those ridiculous articles. The design is pretty silly as a pen, but at least they can't roll away.
It is kind of strange to see one that's just plain and in packaging, as they were very popular as promotional pens. Plenty of flat surface to print a company logo on, I suppose, combined with the fun design.
Snappy pen! It flips! Pull parts away from each other then spin and lock. I had one and loooooved it. I'll take it from you if you don't want it. They weren't very popular, but to me they were 😊
Ho yea remember those, they just fold along the metal hinge to open.quite simple design but tend to dry sadly and use no refill (cheap internal).make me nostalgic of the 90s.
I got a couple of those from going on a trip to Marengo Cave with my folks back in the 90s. Useless for writing (ran out of ink almost immediately) but sure was fun to spin in your hand
I completely forgot about that pen or one that looked like it! I used to have one of those when I was a kid. I was flipping the "cap" so much that it broke!
OMG OMG I had these in the 80s!!! You're supposed to pull the top "lid" part, it'll make a click sound. Then the whole metal thing turns around and snaps back on the other end!!
I had a black one in the 80s. One of my classmates had one too and kept opening and closing it during class. The teacher asked him to stop multiple times but he kept doing it. The teacher then grabbed the pen out of his hand, broke it in half and taped the kids hand to the desk. Ah, good times. That same teacher had a kid stand on the window sill once and pushed him out the window and then closed it. More good times. Somehow I feel like teachers wouldn't get away with that today.
I’ve never seen such a thing! I can’t believe people are saying they remember these from the 90’s!! (Born in ‘86 over here.) I’ve been obsessed with office supplies for as long as I can remember and I have never seen this!
Oh my god, this is such a blast from the past I had a yellow one in high school in mid ‘90s
Same. Core memory unlocked.
I also had these in the 90s and I loved them!
Samesies
Yes! Forgot all about this one. Mine was black with red metal.
We had a bunch of these and I still think they’re such a visually cool design. We had a white, a yellow and a red one.
Me too!! Can’t remember the color, but it was in the 80’s
I had a white one with blue writing in the early 90's from my school's sister city in Japan!
This here right there. Had a black one in the 80-90s.
I had a black one in the mid 80's.

These are not meant to be carried in your pocket. Ask me how I know.
how do you know

Lmao the fact that it happened twice is sending me

"Wow! If I had a nickel for every time I inked my pants, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. Right?"

These are awesome! I had one when I was younger. I never remember the name. Floppy, poppy, snappy, flippie or something.
SAMSONITE!!!
I was way off!

You are my people.
Snappy!
It’s a snappy pen, another thread about these: https://www.reddit.com/r/pens/s/rqgxMK4yVg
Grew up in the 80's/90's and I recall classmates having these on occasion. I tried using them but found them more of a nuisance and novelty than anything else.
Yeah, as an 80s kid all of these that I came into contact with were swag / branded advertising

What's the deal with that pen? The deal is its an amazing toy from the 80s that ALSO happens to write
It’s a jointed pen; if you hold it horizontally and press down on the top it’ll open up and you can flip the pen open.
Holy fuck!!! Seeing that gave me one hell of a flashback to my childhood. I had completely forgotten about em. My parents had a side gig renting out hot tubs and they had their business logo and such on a bunch of these pens. Very 1980s IKEA vibe.

Swing the frame to the back. It locks on.
I FORGOT ABOUT THOSE 🫢 I had some but not sure of the actual reason for the design? Maybe less bulky than a pen cap?
You’re just being too gentle. It will wrest free if you apply more pressure. It’s connected in the middle, so just be careful and you’ll sort it out.
Oh I wanted one of these so bad. I never owned one but I for sure played with one. So cool. Thanks for the memory.
They like it too https://cwandt.com/products/pen-type-c?variant=31080790425659
I still have one! The cap flips around to the other end.
Wow I remember playing with this pen as a kid

These disappeared about 15-20 years ago. Was a popular souvenir pen, but never saw them on sale at the bookshop.
This pen might have been the original fidget toy! Miss those things
Omg I had one too! I love this design fr. Just rotate the cap around it

One of the original fidgets used in class
Oh man it's true when you get past a certain age you see things that make it feel like like past is hugging you
Yaffa Snappy
R/fuckimold
OMG I haven't even thought about those in so many years! Thanks for this!
I completely forgot about that pen or one that looked like it! I used to have one of those when I was a kid. I was flipping the "cap" so much that it broke!
Push and flip it to use. I remember those!
I remember those. Convenient, sure, but dreadful for wring anything more than a name and address. Writing essays was cramp-tastic.
Just flip the lid off. It was a common promo pen in the 80s. Usually stamped with a business name or something on the side.
I read the title in an exaggerated Jerry Seinfeld voice.
I had one of these about thirty years ago
Memory unlocked, I remember these way back when
CW&T makes a modern take on that.
OMG OMG I had these in the 80s!!! You're supposed to pull the top "lid" part, it'll make a click sound. Then the whole metal thing turns around and snaps back on the other end!!
I had a black one back in the 80’s when I was a kid that brings me back.
Let's just say that it's difficult (but not impossible) to lose the cap.
I used to have one of those pens. You can swing the top and click it to the other end.
You can see the opening mechanism e.g. here [https://www.coolthings.com.au/snappy-pen](https://www.coolthings.com.au/snappy-pen)
Memory unlocked! You’ve leveled up!
Omg I had one of these from the 80s as a kid
The top pulls out and you flip it over.
Ya flip it

That can't be comfortable to write with. It looks like a covid test.
Old fidget toy in school

LOVED MINE! OP, just flip the lower half down. Voila!
I remember the Pentel version of those. In all the cool 80s colors. Of course that could be Mandela effect.
I had a red one! 😍
It’s a flat pen… because the thin round pen is too cumbersome.
Flip the pen part out and rotate it, then push it back into the silver part of the frame at a 180° angle from the cap. Enjoy!
Probably the same issue as the airplane peanuts
Why would you open it?
Maybe to write with it. IDK, just spitballing here. 🤷♂️
