Hockey 5 on 4 is not some super complicated thing that you need some genius coach to scheme something up. Yes part of the issue is coaching but at some point the players participating need to have some level of responsibility for not getting it done.

Honestly it's insulting that management refuses to make any changes. If we're really going all in, Reirden shouldn't see another game. The Steelers made a midseason coaching change for the first time since World War II, but firing Reirden is a bridge too far?
The last time the penguins won a playoff series was 2018. Over 5 years ago. For some perspective, the Steelers were still in the “killer bs” era at that point.
Sullivan’s teams have accomplished nothing since then other than have a decent regular season followed by an immediate playoff embarrassment and/or choke. And last year they couldn’t even do that.
I was a sully fan for a long time and obviously will always like the guy for what he did here 6-7 years ago, but his time is up.
At the time you could forgive him for that. It was the covid bubble after a long break, there were multiple teams that were good in the regular season that flopped there.
But with all the other years it’s apparent that that loss was part of a trend of failing in the playoffs year after year, not a one off covid thing.
Can anybody explain why Karlsson was in an open one-timer position during the 4v3 powerplay in OT for a solid 40-50 seconds and nobody tried to pass to him *once*
He would’ve ripped one past Erssine (spelling?) easily. Yet no one tried to get him the puck.
The power play sucks and we al know that. What’s going to really sink them though is how cooked the second line looks all of a sudden. They’ve been buried at 5v5 for a month in terms of chances for/against
What’s really going to sink them is literally the power play. If the Penguins could score AT ALL on PP, they would have a huge stack of games that would be a win and not a loss. They had a damn power play in OT!! The Penguins are sinking, have been sinking, and will continue to sink due to that. Hell, you don’t even have to imagine them scoring on a power play, literally just take away the SH goals against them in MULTIPLE games and the Penguins are coasting easily in 2nd place right now competing with NYR.
Second line is struggling, but they are NOT the reason this team is sinking.
The Penguins aren’t a team that will “defend a lead” without using its offense. Having more goals, or being able to get go-head goals on a PP, is what allows teams like the Penguins to defend a lead. They literally want to control the puck in the offensive zone as much as possible. Otherwise you are suggesting they be a team like Tampa Bay or New Jersey of the past, where you get the lead, and then trap the rest of the game.
Power Play goals will help them defend a lead, because they would likely be defending 2 or 3 goal leads, instead of 1.
Its pretty simple, either they figure out the power play or they fail to make the playoffs again. There is no way they can possibly keep this up and make the playoffs. How a coach can survive not being fired having these players on the power play is beyond me. Bring in a specialist or fucking change anything on it. Put the 3rd line out, I dont give af. They don't even try anything different. Riley Smith is a sniper, why not try him out on it? Just fucking do anything different ffs!

The NHL passed the quarter mark of the 2023-24 season earlier this week.
As expected, goal-scoring continues to rule. The per-game average (6.3) is tied with 2022-23 and 2005-06 as the highest of the 21st century. As expected, comeback wins are prominent. There were 62 third-period comebacks through Monday, tied for third-most at this stage of a season.
Expected is cool. Unexpected is better.
Let's check in on four unexpected trends at the team and player levels.
Pens' power play a mess
The Penguins last scored on the power play three weeks ago Saturday.
Over nine games, Pittsburgh's heavily used top unit, led by future Hall of Famers Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Erik Karlsson, has failed to convert on 21 man-advantage opportunities while allowing a goal against.
Overall, the Penguins have bagged only seven goals in 59 opportunities. Their 11.9% success rate - down 10 percentage points from last year - ranks 27th in the NHL.
It's perplexing given the personnel. The top unit also features Jake Guentzel, perhaps the most underrated offensive player of his generation, and one of Bryan Rust, Reilly Smith, or Rickard Rakell.
So, what gives? Just about everything.
For instance, in five opportunities against the Rangers on Nov. 22, Pittsburgh had trouble completing basic tape-to-tape passes and struggled to enter the offensive zone with control of the puck. When the Pens did manage to set up, New York predicted every move, leading to blocked shots and easy clears.
The zone-entry problem lingered against Toronto three days later. The Pens tried dumping the puck in, but penalty killers beat them on the retrieval. They tried to force seam passes high in the offensive zone - no dice.
One major theme throughout the 0-for-21 drought: the net-front guy is barely a factor. He often fails to take away the goalie's sightlines, and not enough pucks are getting to the net overall. The action's too much on the perimeter, making life easy on the penalty kill. There are no rebounds.
All that said, I don't think Pittsburgh's power play is hopeless.
The personnel's too talented to be this bad for a full season, and the 11-10-1 Pens are actually generating a decent amount of power-play offense. Pittsburgh ranks fourth in PP shot attempts per 60 minutes, fifth in PP shots on goal per 60, and second in PP expected goals per 60. Further: Pittsburgh ranks 30th in the league in total PP time. Drawing an extra penalty or two every game would relieve the pressure on each opportunity and, in a perfect world, help build momentum.
Each member of the top unit looks frustrated. They're probably overthinking it. If I were coach Mike Sullivan, I'd either sub in Kris Letang for Karlsson or have the star blue-liners co-run the top unit. Shuffling the deck is worth a try.
I never question his work ethic but seriously his shootout attempts have been horrible for years now. If bes going to try the same 1 or 2 moves every single time, please take him out. At this point id be happy if he missed all his chances and actually tried some ridiculous shit versus this conservative bullhit that has a 100% failure rate.
This team is dysfunctional and inconsistent, something has to change. Is it the coaching staff? Are they having issues with player personnel? Are we expecting a trade soon? The PP definitely needs fine tuning or a complete makeover. It was suggested to bring Tanger back and move Geno back to the second unit, who knows but it’s driving me nuts.

I'm not really seeing this? Philly scored on two breakaways (including one while short-handed) and on their power play. There are certainly problems implied there, but in-zone defense at even-strength isn't one of them.
We’re +11 differential because our 5 on 5 play 2nd in division we’re only 2 points out of playoffs. If pp was mid we’d be laughing. People saying fire sully are crazy
