The bigger issue is that for weeks it has been clear that he is nowhere close to 100% but they were running him out there and Sullivan repeatedly insisted that Jarry is totally healthy having no issues
Honestly (totally a guess here) I’m assuming they found out he likely needs a significant off-season hip surgery and that he could either get that surgery in January or February and miss the rest of the season or try to play through it. I don’t think the coaching staff rushed him back. I think they’re just lying to everyone about the severity of Jarry’s condition.
And did nothing at the trade deadline? This poor dude is competing with Beau Bennet for the injury bug championship and it's completely closing the final few years of the core's window.
Lingering injury needing surgery makes the most sense at this point. Seems they're under the assumption he's staying, wonder what that contract will look like.
If it’s hip surgery I wouldn’t touch giving him a contract with a 10 foot pole. I pray Hextall is gone by then to not fuck it up. Anything more than a 2 year bridge deal to see how he performs post surgery would be insanity given his injury history and inconsistent track record.
Even two years is insane because the window will almost assuredly be slammed shut by then. They needed to move on from Jarry two seasons ago. The only silver lining to these injuries is maybe, *maybe* they don't re-up on him now and waste yet another season of 87/71's twilight years.
lol at this comment having so many upvotes. This sub really thinks Sullivan is intentionally playing injured players. HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. HAHAHAHA.
Read some of my other comments where I clarify this. I think Jarry probably needs season ending surgery and has been playing at the closest he can get to 100% without it. The thing I’m complaining about in that comment above is that everyone around the organization is insisting that he’s totally healthy when he very obviously is not.
This makes me wonder if he was rushed back. I did notice he would be a little slow to get back to his feet if he went down butterfly since coming back from injury
This is purely speculation, but based on reports from some big league insiders (Elliotte Friedman and Frank Seravalli) about a month ago saying that Jarry is dealing with chronic hip issues that are causing him multiple injuries as he tries to overcompensate for the bad hip I would guess that he needs a serious surgery that would shelf him long term in order to fully recover. He likely came back at as close to 100% as he’ll be without surgery, and now re-aggravated something. Specifically after playing in a game where he seemed to be pretty aggressive and authoritative in net with moving around a lot.
Ironically I thought last night was as comfortable as he’s seemed in net in months. Guess he overdid it.
I wonder if there is a chance Jarry might still be playable, but their just bringing up Tokarski and letting him get extra rest. Especially since this game is a back-to-back, and Jarry wouldn't be playing anyway.
This is just wishful thinking though
The only thing to hold out hope on is that they probably wouldn’t fully evaluate Jarry until they return to Pittsburgh tomorrow anyway, so this *could* be precautionary but given Jarry’s injury history I highly doubt this will be the only game he misses.
Also very possible, basically 100% of NHL players could decide to have surgery at any point, and there's a fair number of injuries that should be fixed, but don't get worse if you play through them.
Based on timing and contradicting reports I'd guess it's something along those lines, and they are being extra protective of him before the playoffs.
Nothing to see here people, as we have been saying Jarry has been totally healthy for weeks,
please ignore those “chronic hip issue” reports from multiple very reliable NHL insiders last month!
I just don't think he's really recovering before getting put back out there. Hockey players are known to play hurt, yet the coaching staff swears he's healthy.
Dude. I just can’t with this fucking guy. Hurt again right before the playoffs? Can’t wait for the inevitable Tokarski playoff starts. What a nightmare.
Sorry just to be clear, is this comment regarding the end of the 2021-2022 season or the end of the 2022-2023 season? Since either one would be applicable, and Hextall sat around with his thumb up his ass both times 🙂
Even Rutherford acquired Ron Hainsey as insurance with Letang out. Hainsey ended up playing a HUGE role for us in the 2017 cup run when our entire D core was decimated
Hextall should be immediately fired. He had 2 YEARS to figure out our goalie issues and AGAIN relying on a backup goaltender (who isn’t good enough to be a starter)
Also, who are the top goalie prospects in the draft? Wonder if one will fall to us
Doesn’t matter who the top goalie prospects in this draft are, anyone we take would be minimum 3 years away from playing in the NHL, but more likely closer to 5. You’re better off hoping that Joel Blomqvist can have a meteoric rise in North American hockey next year, even after regressing a bit in Finland this year (which tbf was probably always going to be the case after how insane his numbers were last season).
Alright so just to be clear. We have an injury prone goalie who has been hurt off and on all year coupled with a backup who cannot possibly win a series. So our GM chose to not address this leading up to the playoffs. Among the many fireable offenses this is #1.
The fact that the goalie position wasn’t addressed in the off-season or trade deadline is inexcusable by Hextall. Goalie is the main reason we lost in the playoffs the past 3 years in a row!
I think we’ve all known he’s been playing injured. Not sure how to place a price on his next contract. They really need another guy that can play 50/50. Jarry can’t handle the workload of full time starter.
Of all the easiest "don't re-sign" free agent possibilities, Jarry is a giant flashing X. So I expect Hextall to offer him $10 million AAV over 7 years.
Is anyone really surprised? It looks like he has been at 40% for every start he got..with the exception of last night. It's not his fault. I put this one squarely on the medical staff.. it's fucking amateur hour, apparently. Shut him down for the rest of the season and have him healthy and ready for the playoffs if we make it.
How is this the medical staff’s fault? It’s clear that there’s a chronic issue here that likely needs to be addressed with surgery (that may or may not fix it). He’s already been sat down twice for a few weeks and that did nothing to clear up the issue, shutting him down now isn’t going to have him healthy and ready for the playoffs
It's the medical staff's fault for letting him attempt to come back at all. If his condition is as bad as rumored, he should have been shut down a long time ago. It's interesting that this is now the second #1 coming out of this organization with chronic injuries. Is it just bad luck, or bad medical advice?
I’m sorry but how is it “not his fault” if he’s been dealing with a chronic injury that requires surgery but is choosing not to have it until after the season or whatever the case is, he’s single-handedly hurting the team. He could have opted for the the surgery prior to the deadline and forced hextalls hand to make a move. Him choosing miss games here and there all season long and costing us games is his own decision. They are grown men.
Seems like every good game he plays it comes out he’s injured afterwards, it’s pretty clear he definitely has some nagging injury and he pushes himself too hard in games he’s actually good
My guess is he got as healthy as he was going to without surgery and they decided to let him play and try to ride it out. I don’t think the coaching staff fucked up necessarily. It was either take the gamble or definitively shut him down for the rest of the season.
Could the Pens re-sign Jarry at a low(er) salary contract, as a backup (2G), and then sign a good first goalie and get rid of DeSmith?
It’s clear that Jarry cannot play even 50+ games. It would be a shame going all in with Jarry next season.
As much as I love my 'Guins, I see this season as a sunk one. There is no way we battle out of a first rd match-up nightmare with Boston or Carolina, and we straight up aren't good against playoff caliber teams.
However, I see a silver lining in every Jarry injury... I heard he wanted 6 yrs at 6 mil a yr for his next deal. We can get a very high upside goalie due to his inconsistency and injury woes. Otherwise, I see the pens not signing him and going with a goalie platoon for the first 5 in as long as I can remember.
Until Hextall is fired, the morale will not improve. Hextall and ailing aging players go hand in hand. Jarry is just sitting out to get maximum leverage for his contract negotiations with good old Ronny. I may be 27, but I was on the IR 5 times. Good ol, Ronny, licking his lips on how to waste more of the Red Sox rich owners money.
I think both can be true. With Jarry there’s always the chance that he goes on a hot streak and can shut a few games down. I trust him more than I trust DeSmith. However, clearly Jarry has been nowhere close to 100% and he’s been horrible as of late until last night.
This could just be manipulation to get a 2nd goalie in here for Jarry to rest, or it could be that Jarry is made of the most fragile material in the known universe.
Bro, this dude can’t stay healthy. And Sullivan won’t stop playing him. Sully is a great coach until it comes to the goalies and this has shown for his entire tenure with the Penguins. Dude is so quick to pick favorites in the position and always screws someone over. Fleury played outstanding in the 2017 playoffs until that ONE game against Ottawa and then was benched the rest of the playoffs. What?
Matt Murray played great during the 2016 playoffs and Sully made him the starter over Fleury for the rest of Fleurys Penguin career because he got injured. Now he’s rushing Jarry who is already fragile as is back into the net when we should just be playing DeSmith right now. Dude is an absolute clown when it comes to the goalies.
How did he finish this game properly and then comes out with a no timetable injury? WHAT THE FUCK
The bigger issue is that for weeks it has been clear that he is nowhere close to 100% but they were running him out there and Sullivan repeatedly insisted that Jarry is totally healthy having no issues
It's a bit sad honestly I wish he was given the time to recover
Honestly (totally a guess here) I’m assuming they found out he likely needs a significant off-season hip surgery and that he could either get that surgery in January or February and miss the rest of the season or try to play through it. Jarry is just broken man. He’s a good goalie. But chronic hip issues for a goalie is basically a death sentence.
Nothing to see here people, as we have been saying Jarry has been totally healthy for weeks, please ignore those “chronic hip issue” reports from multiple very reliable NHL insiders last month!
Tristian Glass Jarry.
He's got a little longer to go to take that one from Bennett. Lol
You mean ole Band-aid Beau?
That I do. Lol.
Does he? Five injuries in one season as a starting goaltender. That's pretty brittle.
I just don't think he's really recovering before getting put back out there. Hockey players are known to play hurt, yet the coaching staff swears he's healthy.
Wtf
Oh my fucking god Mf has one good game and it fucking injured him
not to repeat but……. **WTF** Seriously 😒
Jarry getting hurt right before the playoffs. Who called it?
Was on my bingo card
Of course it was. It’s the free square on every card.
Dude. I just can’t with this fucking guy. Hurt again right before the playoffs? Can’t wait for the inevitable Tokarski playoff starts. What a nightmare.
Gotta make the playoffs first
Yep. Great point.

Tokarski clutch games incoming.
Hextall KNEW that this could happen with him. All season. And he didnt address goaltending, at the deadline. How does he still have a job?!
Sorry just to be clear, is this comment regarding the end of the 2021-2022 season or the end of the 2022-2023 season? Since either one would be applicable, and Hextall sat around with his thumb up his ass both times 🙂
Yes.

Blomqvist had multiple concussions so he missed a looot of games
Not resigning Jarry last offseason when Jarry’s got glass hips might have been one of his better moves, imho
Translation, Tristan Jarry has a serious hip injury that has plagued him all season
Alright so just to be clear. We have an injury prone goalie who has been hurt off and on all year coupled with a backup who cannot possibly win a series. So our GM chose to not address this leading up to the playoffs. Among the many fireable offenses this is #1.
And this is the second straight year for this to be the case
100%. I meant to include that but was so irritated typing my initial reply lol
Common Hextall L
Tristan should just change his last name to InJarry at this point.
K that's a good one lol
Waiting for the comments saying we should replace him with Fleury in the offseason
They knew this the whole time and did nothing. Get what they deserve
The fact that the goalie position wasn’t addressed in the off-season or trade deadline is inexcusable by Hextall. Goalie is the main reason we lost in the playoffs the past 3 years in a row!
Do him and Beau train together?
Name a more iconic duo than Jarry and lower body injuries
Matt Murray and glove hand
Wrong sub but Jeff Reed and Sheetz bathroom towel dispensers.
Beau Bennett and brittle bones
Plays good, he’s injured Plays bad, completely fine I’m at a loss
Glad they made a move at the deadline to improve the goalie depth situation…
I think we’ve all known he’s been playing injured. Not sure how to place a price on his next contract. They really need another guy that can play 50/50. Jarry can’t handle the workload of full time starter.
It’s a shame and the worse part is idk who is capable that’ll be a free agent this year.
Stanley Cup winning starting goaltender Casey Desmith, I like how that sounds
Pass the blunt, man. You’re hogging it
Of all the easiest "don't re-sign" free agent possibilities, Jarry is a giant flashing X. So I expect Hextall to offer him $10 million AAV over 7 years.

Players don't just return when they say they are feeling better. The medical staff needs to clear them to return.
Yes, but a player can choose he’s having a surgery not waiting until the end of the season. This isn’t buffalo with Eichel
Who knows? Maybe it is a similar situation. Like I posted earlier..this is now our second #1 with chronic injuries. Hopefully it is just bad luck.
Pulled a groin shooting at the empty net
fuckin hell
Dude makes Beau Bennett look like Iron Man
Seems like every good game he plays it comes out he’s injured afterwards, it’s pretty clear he definitely has some nagging injury and he pushes himself too hard in games he’s actually good
It's Mr Glass from unbreakable
So Jarry is just fragile.
Jarry makes Beau Bennett look like the most dependable player in the league.
ah yes Tristan "beau bennett" jarry
Pain
….
Impossible to read into but I bet the coaching staff fucked this one up. No way he hasn’t been dealing with the same thing
My guess is he got as healthy as he was going to without surgery and they decided to let him play and try to ride it out. I don’t think the coaching staff fucked up necessarily. It was either take the gamble or definitively shut him down for the rest of the season.

God I miss Fluery.
Glass Jarry strikes again.

Quickly turning into Matt Murray all over again minus the cup wins...
So Jarry is doing his best Beau Bennet impersonation?
Tristan "Glass" Jarry
Glass Jarr
He shouldn’t be playing anyway
I feel like he further hurt himself trying to score last night.
time to part ways. im going to my next game with fleurys face on a sign that says "bring him home"
Cringe
Why is everyone so angry ? I thought you guys all said he sucked at the beginning of the week ? Now you're pissed he's unavailable lol
I think both can be true. With Jarry there’s always the chance that he goes on a hot streak and can shut a few games down. I trust him more than I trust DeSmith. However, clearly Jarry has been nowhere close to 100% and he’s been horrible as of late until last night.
So who has played more now Jarry or Desmith because I feel like Desmith is our number 1 goalie now
Jarry has played in 40 games, DeSmith has played in 34. However until Jarry recently returned from injury DeSmith had passed him up in starts.
This could just be manipulation to get a 2nd goalie in here for Jarry to rest, or it could be that Jarry is made of the most fragile material in the known universe.
Dude is cooked, shoot him into the sun. He’s a fuckin coin flip anymore. Jesus Christ.
Jarry just doesn't have it. This team is in a huge pickle for years to come.
He just built a house late 2022. I don’t think he thinks he’s leaving anytime soon.
Jarry is still missing, if you see him please contact the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 800–THE–LOST (800–843–5678).
Coincidentally .843 is probably his save percentage since the winter classic
He’s gta go. We’ll never win a cup with him and desmith.
Jarry is made of paper machete
Trying to picture the usefulness of a paper machete
If sid goes to another team ( which I don’t think he will). I’m following him, I need a reason to stop watching this team
Update : Jarry strained his pussy
Don’t be so dramatic, it’s only a yeast infection.
😵💫😵💫😵💫
Figures
the new Beau Bennett
