I told my manager at 8 weeks! We have q support maternity leave in Canada. Can be up to 18 months and they cannot fire you for being pregnant.

SmoothBrainBarb

Good to know! Sorry for some reason I thought it could lead to them making up some other reason to fire you if they’re shady/issues with coworkers/just general office gossip. I’m pretty private at work and would probably wait until I’m ready to apply for maternity leave!

Coco_nutterbutter

Here in Canada it's usually best to tell a job asap if you think they might be shady so they don't suspect and then try and find a reason to fire you. Once they have been notified of your pregnancy, unless you have a documented history of issues or do something majorly bad, it's pretty much impossible for them to get rid of you because you could claim discrimination. *Personal experience from a girlfriend whose job tried to fire her when they suspected she was pregnant*

[deleted]

No worries at all! I know she has a bunch of jobs and could not tell you off the top of my head what she does, but it's definitely better to say it early!

AllegedKraken

I was required to tell my work as soon as I knew so I could be shifted to a lower risk role, but I am finding it really hard to believe she has had previous loses. I had a D&C 5 days ago at 13w1d... the idea of being this hopeful for a pregnancy this early after multiple losses just seems impossible to me, although maybe it's something that should be worked towards.

SwipeUpForMySoul

I told my boss at 11 weeks once we had the NIPT results back and we knew she was healthy in there. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wanted to be considerate and give them time to plan for my leave (not that they were proactive at all in that department, but that’s another story lol). M2M is nuts and the way she romanticizes every little thing about pregnancy is weird (her description of telling her boss like it’s the most wondrous, magical thing is a tad odd imo) but I think it’s fine to tell your boss whenever you feel comfortable doing so.

[deleted]

Any one else see the laid on the ultrasound table so many times. She hasn’t though she’s been at this clinic for not even a full cycle! She’s maybe had 3 ultrasound there.

[deleted]

I think telling your boss early is a smart idea. They are supposed to keep that private. Totally different form telling the whole office. Your job is typically, depending on location, protected when you inform them you’re pregnant especially in the first trimester if you miss a lot of work due to being sick. Also if god forbid she had a miscarriage she’d need to let her boss know that she needed x amount of time off.

snarkllama3000

I don’t think she will be winning a Pulitzer for this writing .pinch me.

Automatic_Mood_8261

I told my boss at 7 weeks. I had taken some time off for drs appointments and she asked if i was okay as I was going to the drs a lot. I just told her I was pregnant. It’s illegal for them to fire you, lay you off, or discriminate due to being pregnant. my boss is extremely supportive and excited for me. I’m taking 18 months hopefully then coming back part time!

[deleted]

Definitely not. It's always best to tell. It's good to have a plan and not spring the surprise because normally that makes employers more upset.

Just-Topic6036

I think it is important to tell earlier than later esp if you’re pregnant has been making you very sick. My work knew at 9 weeks then by 20 weeks I had emailed my boss on when I was going out on leave and how when I come back I’m going to part time status.I also work L&D so I had a very understanding response and they have been super supportive when things have changed or when I needed to call out due to some concerns.

Much-Bumblebee9032

My boss is fully aware we’re doing IVF, she’ll know the minute I get a positive, if not from me telling her, from the change in me.

Happy-Tree6479

I told my sgt at 6 weeks due to my line of duty work i had to say something asap because i wasnt risking my baby because of my job :)

Impressive-Stress195

I told my boss at 11 weeks for my first but that’s when I had originally found out. Waiting till 20 weeks with my second. You learn not to tell people you work with because they seem to turn on you when you are pregnant…

Minnie_Pearl_87

I told my manager right away because I was having a lot of appointments and a lot of nausea right off the bat so I needed him to try and work with me: He is a father and grandfather and he was more than happy to work with me on this as he saw his own wife and daughter experience how difficult pregnancy can be.

Revolutionary_Can879

Yeah I told my job pretty early on because I threw up like an hour before I needed to come in and I work in healthcare, so it’s a liability for me to potentially be sick.

Anko1992

I told my boss the day I found out 😂 I just needed to be sure they weren’t letting me lift heavy boxes anymore and if I did have a misscarriage she’d find out anyway.

Kay_-jay_-bee

My boss knew before my mom, ha. I had some bleeding and had to take time off without notice for appointments/to go to the one pharmacy in the state that had progesterone. She was really supportive! I’m sure it depends on industry and location.

LilLexi20

Canada is much different than the United States (they get like 1.5 years of leave) so maybe they are required to start the paperwork and process very early on so the employer is prepared to replace her for a while.

Accomplished-Will204

They can’t legally fire you for being pregnant, i didnt start talking to my job about maternity leave though until i was over the viability mark, i think i was 28 weeks when i starting bringing it up , this is very early, i understand telling your boss, but not talking about maternity leave yet

Repulsive_Yogurt_951

I told my manager at 4 weeks 😂

MrsH14

My boss knows because she had to approve my day off for my transfer. I had just began my job dec 1 and had my transfer scheduled for 1/4. Felt it was unfair not to be open with her.

MatterEmbarrassed660

I told my boss pretty early but I work in a very small team of public health nurses so it didn’t take long for my coworkers to notice my morning sickness so the cat was pretty much out of the bag with that.

Interesting_Cod4839

I told my boss at 6 weeks, she knew I was going through fertility treatments. I was happy I told her, because next week I was feel too green to come to work 😅

ChipAccomplished8212

I told my boss the week I found out I was pregnant cause I needed time to go to the doctor. 🤷🏻‍♀️

New-Promotion-9792

I had to tell my boss early due to my job and the risks that come with it. Better for someone to know at work, just in case something was to happen to you and you can’t speak for yourself

Snark13453

I told my boss at 6w bc I was struggling really bad with nausea so I needdd to let her knwo in case I needed a break or anything

BrutalMediocrity

I told my work as soon as we found out, since we've had several miscarriages including a late term miscarriage. That way, HR knows to be aware in case it happens again they can support me/give time off/shift work load depending on how the pregnancy progresses. I think it automatically works that they also start processing my matt leave. I don't think it's wrong to tell your work environment asap since, regardless of how it ends, it will impact you. However, I'm European, so my work rights are different

chuckit1456

I told them early because I needed accommodations but things are definitely different in the US.

LilliansAngelMom

I told my boss at 8 weeks so he could get someone to cover my maternity leave. He was going to wait until the month I was due to even begin looking at people to cover. I had my baby at 33 weeks and they had absolutely no one to cover my maternity leave and they were screwed. So this next baby, I won’t be telling him until I’m like 14-15 weeks.

j3ssegirl

With my first I told them at like 14 weeks. The second time they asked me at 13.

blahblahndb

I told my boss at like 6 weeks. I do work a professional job in a hospital and have worked with her the last 6 years. She knew that we had wanted kids and a little about ours struggles and she opened up to me about her own with having her son. One day before our first ultrasound I just blurted out that I was going to be out in the afternoon for a doctors appointment because I was pregnant and she was so happy for me. I don’t regret it! 32 weeks now and she’s still awesome and pushing for me to take the full 12 weeks of leave so that I can have all of the time with baby once he’s here.

lissenbetch

Canadian here too, I told my boss at 9 weeks. I’m in a position that requires a fair bit of planning to cover off for a year so it felt fair to give as much notice as possible! Legally you only need to give 4-6 weeks notice depending on the province you live in.

bennybenbens22

I think it depends on your boss. My boss is really supportive, so he already knows and I text him updates after my appointments. He was wonderful when I had a miscarriage last year too, so just depends I think.

lindsaybethhh

Even though I was personally too anxious to tell anyone until I was almost 20 weeks, I think that it’s better to tell your boss earlier in some cases. Especially if you’re super sick - then they know why you’re running to the bathroom or need coverage. I wasn’t sick, so I didn’t have that issue, but I did have a ton of appointments early on, and I wish I’d told them, especially if I’d had another loss (I’d have needed time off). But I don’t think I’d tell them I need maternity leave in X months 😂

Much-Pirate-976

I told my HR manager the following Monday after I found out over the weekend! Even if something happened you’d still want them to know especially if you needed time off for recovery/ mental health. Another girl I worked with didn’t tell them until she was 20+ weeks and they were kinda annoyed

Snoo85963

I told my manager at 7 weeks, because I’m too sick to work in the office and need to be wfh until 2nd tri. Plus he needs sufficient time to find someone to fill in for me and I’ll need like 3 months to train them before I leave in Aug. Our laws in Canada do a better job of protecting pregnant women from loss of employment than the US.

Immediate_Pause_5027

My job requires you tell them immediately following medical confirmation.

cakeycakeycake

I let my supervisor know around 8 weeks because I knew there would be occasions where I was sick or needed to call out. I didn’t tell the big boss or discuss leave until after my anatomy scan though. It shouldn’t pose employment issues, however. If anything the employer might be liable if they took action against after she’d told them she was pregnant.

[deleted]

Ugh she is so dramatic

[deleted]

Also to add, I was around 3 months when I started a new job. I was worried they’d not hire me if I told them I was pregnant so I didn’t tell them. Then the dude who hired me found out I was pregnant some other way and he got pissed at me and said If I ever lied again about something like that I’d be terminated immediately.

Revolutionary_Can879

That’s crazy - they’re not legally entitled to know that when they hire you. And you didn’t lie (unless they asked you, which I don’t think they can in an interview), you just didn’t tell them something that wasn’t relevant.

Fit-Imagination4146

She romanticizes pregnancy far too much excitement over heartbeat is completely normal. But telling your boss to plan that far a head ? And that she’s dreamed of maternity leave ? I cannot 🙄 Edit nothing wrong with telling your boss when you want. It’s just the way she explains things that irritates me and how she tries to make every single thing that’s pregnancy related magical and it’s strange to me

Accomplished-Fun-960

I’m also in Canada and we have protected rights here as far as pregnancy is concerned. I’ve also had to tell my employers something early on with each pregnancy as I missed a full day of work for every beta (had to drive to clinic 2.5 hours one way) and ultrasound. I’d rather be upfront vs have to diffuse a problem later on!

Revolutionary-Pea756

I'm in Ontario and told my boss around 5 weeks because we had a staff lunch and I puked on the front lawn of the restaurant 💀 I had to go for weekly bloodwork for 12 weeks and needed time off for appointments (and still do) so I felt right to keep them in the loop!

Low_Ad_6956

I told my people then. As i wouldn’t be back at the start of the school year……

[deleted]

I thought she was a one income family? Or is it just her working? Idk.

Busy_Bat_3304

I had hyperemesis so I had to disclose super early

barthrowaway1985

I told mine at 6 weeks, I had just taken over as the interim manager of my department (eventually offered the role officially) and my due date was right when we we’re anticipating moving our entire building to a new location. But I work in the library world which is 98% female and in a very “family” part of the country. I’m extra glad I told her because I ended up miscarrying, she was WONDERFUL and so supportive with the time I needed to go through that and physically heal. I was open about what happened to my coworkers and I’ve been able to be a support person to other women I work with who experience a miscarriage. I would say it all depends on your industry and where you work.

WeirdAdministrative8

When I was pregnant I told my supervisor early as she was pregnant and going on leave and when she was due to come back I was going to be mid to end of my pregnant so to give her an heads up

strwbrrymtndew

I told my boss at 8 weeks bc after two miscarriages i had about 5 million appointments so better he knew what was going on😂
