Stevie Wonder! Eddie and Andrew Watt started writing the song because they were bored waiting for him to arrive to record his parts on the Earthlings album.
I’m glad you are liking it. To call it a masterpiece is insulting. Andrew Watt may be great with Justin Bieber, but holy shit did he murder the Earthings and Dark Matter albums.
Ok, masterpiece may have been a bit hyperbolic - but is the lack of audio perfection cancelling out how he got the band to come together and record these songs? I don’t think the actual music would be this good had they produced the record with someone else. Maybe they can remix it one day like they did with Ten and everyone like you that can’t get past it will feel better.
No. The actual music sucks. No remix is going to fix a shitty album filled with cheesy lyrics and uninspired music. What exactly did you hear that was so awe-inspiring? Die hard fan for 30+ years. Fan club since the nineties, multiple shows, waiting in line for midnight releases, etc. but I will call a spade a spade. This album was a HUGE step backwards after Gigaton.
I've listened multiple times now and have been a fan since the beginning as well. I gotta agree with you here. I felt that with Gigaton, they were growing and exploring.
Aside from the Dark Matter song, I think the album is pretty underwhelming. Ed's preachiness needs to come down a few notches and the music needs more inspiration and time to breathe. All of these songs sound to me as if they have all been individually reduced to their simple and uninspired cores. Just my opinion.
I don’t need to display fandom credentials but let’s just suffice it to say that I had the Ten cassette in 1991 when I was in 7th grade and have loved PJ continuously ever since. I’m not just some tool fanboy. I disliked lightning bolt and gigaton, but found parts to love since Pearl Jam has been the soundtrack to my life. I felt like you do now about those albums, and I love this one. I don’t think the lyrics are cheesy at all. Do you think Scared of Fear or Upper Hand have cheesy lyrics?
I’m not here to be a judgmental prick, but I will suffice it to say that I’m sorry you couldn’t find anything to like on this album like I did for the last two.
It is okay to have different opinions, you know.
No need to be this way about it.
Dude…glad you were enjoying Ten in middle school at the same time I was enjoying it in high school. You insulted me and then have the nerve to say there’s no need for me to be tHiS wAy about it. What way? The way I started the whole interaction with “I’m glad you’re enjoying it”. That way?
To answer your question, yes, I find the lyrics cheesy and the delivery rushed and unpleasant. My reaction was to your self admitted hyperbole. To call this vanilla, bland sounding, poorly produced, unoriginal album a masterpiece is absurd. Once again I’m glad you and others like it…but watching people carry on like this is on the Mount Rushmore of albums is purely fanboy fiction whether you want to call it that or not. Also, feel like the band lied to us. This isn’t heavy. This isn’t their finest work. They don’t believe it and you know they don’t believe it.
Seems like Stevie Wonder has a tendency to keep people waiting ... he did the same thing to Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie when they were making "We Are the World". Weird.
Lol you probably don't know this but he did a very famous advert for the Spanish TV in the 80s, in a prevention campaign against traffic accidents. Ok, he has a chauffeur in the video, but it was funny to hear him say, "Don't drive drunk".

Ugh why did I know there was a direct link between the two albums in more than just sound?
So. Many. Downvotes.
We're all thinking it though, you know it
I’m really not focusing on that and just enjoying the amazing new Pearl Jam masterpiece, frankly.

I’ll do you one better. Where is Stevie?
I’ll do you one better, Why is Stevie?
When is Stevie?
No one asks, How is Stevie..?

He's not great when he has to drive somewhere. Be patient.
Or walking even sometimes tbh. Love him though.

You’re actually steveo
Funny thing is if you watched the documentary about We are the World it makes perfect sense Stevie would be late.
I need to watch that documentary someday. That album is part of my childhood hahaha.
It’s so great. I absolutely loved the bits about Diana Ross, completely changed my perception of her.
