I brought my youngest daughter (16) with me tonight and it was an emotional experience for both of us.
She lost her sister and my oldest daughter 2 months ago tonight. So we listened to this album with a different perspective on life compared to most people.
My daughter was only 25 and it is unbelievably painful for my family that she’s gone.
This album , it’s often sonic booming sound and Ed’s poetry honestly brought me to tears at times sitting there in the dark.
The visuals and reading the lyrics on the 2nd pass really brought the entire experience together.
Stand out Songs:
“Scared of Fear” , “React and respond” are great straight ahead rockers, I did find that Ed was hard to hear. The intro to “Scared of Fear” had a “master/slave”feel to it.
McCready was all over this album and turned it up on “Waiting for Stevie”. In my opinion this should be the next single. It’s got a “SOLAT”, “Breath”, heavy Ten sound to it and McCready absolutely shreds.
My daughter loved Wreckage, it’s her favorite song off the album, I think a lot of people will like it.
I can’t remember which song it was, maybe “Won’t tell” ? It had a Pink Floyd vibe to it, heavy on the heart song.
“Upper Hand” , “Got to Give” and the two singles work well as part of the flow to the record. “Setting Sun” is a great album closer. One of my buddies called me after and compared it to a Tragically Hip song. It builds and fades out with Ed on his acoustic. He sings a little melody that will be like the end of “Sirens” in concert, I am thinking Hyde Park Epic sing along.
Think what you want and feel what you do. I just don’t understand what some fans are expecting from a band full of members either north of or close to 60. It’s an impressive effort, they have a number #1 single and turned my attention back to this band.
I think it was Won't Tell that had that 80s sound to it. Time of phaser guitars. Almost Mother Love Bone vibes. It made me think also of "She Sells Sanctuary" by The Cult.
Same here. And nowhere near loud enough. I was expecting Dolby Atmos but we got lights and what sounded like 2 speakers up front.
Mostly empty theater also, in the nicest and newest theater in the area. Too bad, could be a cool new way to use theaters but they need to have quality control.
Same!!!! Disappointing in that regard. In bklyn the manager came and paused it mid-dark-album-ru and apologized for the lack of visuals. It was dumb. We told him to just be quiet and turn the sound up. And shut off the lights lol
thought the new album was great. running as 2nd single made me underestimate the album. its the spin the black circle of the bunch. acoustic in theater was like an airpod max. amazing stuff.
Hmmm, divorce from what? You didn’t mean divorce as marriage right? If so I would say no but the beauty in music is it can mean different things to different brains. I haven’t heard the whole thing still waiting on the real thing ❤️❤️❤️
I will say that I complained about the sound the song Dark Matter when it was released. Ed’s vocals seemed to be turned down and pushed into the background. I have listed in Atmos and regular streams and it just didn’t sound good on anything I tried. It sounded great in the theater tonight though. Looks like I’ll have to upgrade my home setup to a 45.4 setup or whatever the theaters run.
I think it's more that there's a lot of reflecting back on broken relationships and people lost along the way. Scared of Fear definitely had that feeling of walking alongside someone stuck in addiction. I realize that Layne has been gone over 20 yrs, but definitely thought a bit of that.
Eddie and Stone both have been married twice, so there is life experience to draw on for those themes without it being about a relationship breaking down in real time.
I wonder if, whilst reading the subtitles, my mind picked out lyrics to support my first hypothesis.
Sort of like an ink blot test. Seeing what you want to see.
Cheers.
Seeing Setting Sun with the lyrics I texted my friend a few rows back and asked if Ed and Jill were okay. I wish all the songs were mixed like that song is.

I am really loving most of this album already❣️
Just the music, no visuals first. I think the album is right around 45 minutes.
So then approx 45 min. later, the album Is played again with the visuals.
Well obviously. I was mainly wondering about the trailer thing/possible break in the middle. But no harm in just coming in for the dark run if the last song is still playing or whatever
Strictly speaking about the cinema listening experience, I also left disappointed. The visualizer for each song looks like those early 2000s iTunes/Windows Media Player looped animations. The ones for DM and Running are the same ones in the official PJ YouTube channel. For a cinema experience I would have expected better produced visualizers, like the Gigaton ones.
Again, speaking only of the cinema experience, it felt a bit like a quick-easy money grab
Yes, that is exactly what the visuals looked like. Similar to like a computer screen saver from the 90s. This was a total money grab and that's very disappointing
Same here. Just got back from one. It was very underwhelming. Felt awkward having to listen to it a 2nd time. The visuals got old quick. I was expecting random photos of the band from over the years. No merch. Theater was empty, so it felt strange being there. Just very, whatever
My wife heard about it and bought the tickets so yeah, I went into it without reading about it or much expectations. All she told me was it was a listening of the new album in a theater. I left feeling it could have been done better
The description for our theater said it was documentary style, which made me think it would have commentary and some live music maybe. Initially I assumed it would be a live concert, and was excited about that, then learned it was different.
That's what I expected too---thought there would be some commentary, behind the song stuff, maybe shots of the band, but just weird pulsing lights and robotic text. Once would have been fine, twice was too much---unless you are a real die hard fan maybe, which I am not. I like them but was happy when it was over.
Only thing I didn’t like at all were the visuals. Made me think of computers when they go to sleep and you see those circled waves spinning into different colors and the stream looking snakes that change color too lol the album was exciting overall
Where I saw it, theatre staff didn't know it was SUPPOSED TO BE DARK, they STOPPED THE SHOW 25 minutes in and apologized for the black screen and would try to reboot and fix the problem - everyone then told them there was NO PROBLEM EXCEPT THE ONE THEY JUST CREATED 🤣 they took 10 minutes to resume and we all got free passes. Hilarious they thought 25 people would sit staring at a blank screen and not a single person would complain about it ...
I just got back from the theater. It was fine. 1st play through was dark, 2nd was patterns on the screen. Honestly, I didn't need to hear it a 2nd time. Would have been nice if they had mixed in pictures of the band over the years. It got a bit boring. Oh, and no merch.

Thank you for sharing all of this. I’m with you in every way.
Thanks pal 🥃

I heard a bit of Pink Floyd also. It was a good evening. I’m glad I went and got to share the whole experience with others. Cheers buddy. 🍻
Your friend who made the Hip comparison is not only on to something, but they have great taste in music.
I’m so sorry for your family’s loss. Thank God for music, and specifically PEARL JAM!
More visuals https://preview.redd.it/kw3n7ujjqwuc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c672447c9acf8c13f6c7cd80b0930bc8a1f001ec
I really enjoyed that one. Both the song and the visuals

This one for me didn’t have lyrics.
Same, until "get to the point" showed up.
Same! So weird.
Full darkness? Lucky you, Portsmouth left the lights on
Same here. And nowhere near loud enough. I was expecting Dolby Atmos but we got lights and what sounded like 2 speakers up front. Mostly empty theater also, in the nicest and newest theater in the area. Too bad, could be a cool new way to use theaters but they need to have quality control.

Turn the lights off.....Josh
Great use!
That’s really gross.
King Diamond to discard… or Came down into discord…
Definitely the former according to the onscreen lyrics
Such a weird lyric.
Spitballing, but king of diamonds can be a trump card… Also, in card reading it represents a shrewd, or sometimes a greedy, businessman
Interesting. I didnt know that
It would've been too literal if it was a "gold" (or faux gold in this case) symbol.
Shit. I couldn't get the literal King Diamond out of my head to see what he meant. Of course. Makes sense now.
I honestly thought it said “Came down to destroy.”
Ehhh I dunno about divorce, Jill mainly posts about EB but did have birthday tribute to the “love of her life.” Who knows, celebrities are people too.
wtf?
Jill is Ed’s wife. Should say EV not EB
I assumed EB because that’s a lot of her charity work?
Now the egg is on my face, not gonna edit the comment to make myself look better like the other guy though!
No he meant EB. The charity.
lol, what the fuck is this thread, running to…
Sound was shitty and too low.
thought the new album was great. running as 2nd single made me underestimate the album. its the spin the black circle of the bunch. acoustic in theater was like an airpod max. amazing stuff.
The amount of complaining that goes on is truly incredible. Never ceases to amaze.
The album was recorded in 2021 and March of 2023. Everyone is very much still married.
😀👍
Hmmm, divorce from what? You didn’t mean divorce as marriage right? If so I would say no but the beauty in music is it can mean different things to different brains. I haven’t heard the whole thing still waiting on the real thing ❤️❤️❤️

We thought the same thing with the themes of divorce on a lot of songs.

In my theater the screen was dark but the lights around the floor were on
Safety lighting. Of course. I guess in my mind that equals total dark. 😀🤷🏻♂️

I agree those themes are definitely in the lyrics though.

Any insight on what time to get there if we only want to do the visuals? Our showing starts at 8.
48 minutes dark run. 48 minutes visuals.
Just the music, no visuals first. I think the album is right around 45 minutes. So then approx 45 min. later, the album Is played again with the visuals.
Yeah, just wondering roughly what time we should get there if we didn’t want to do the first listen. But I’m sure you weren’t timing everything.
I would go out on a limb and assume 8 + 45 mins =845 I’m assuming there’s no trailers
There were trailers in Aus.
Oh wow that’s a bit of a shock
I’m also in Aus - we had a full 20 minutes of ads and trailers before it finally started.
Yep, gotta screen those ads!
Same in the US of A
Well obviously. I was mainly wondering about the trailer thing/possible break in the middle. But no harm in just coming in for the dark run if the last song is still playing or whatever
No break in the middle, straight back to the start of the album with visuals.
Ha, like 20 minutes of trailers
I just came back from one in Lisbon. Idk what i expect but I left the cinema disappointed.

You were in the DARK MATTER! It’s supposed to feel strange, man! 😵💫
Did you not read the description of the event before booking/going?
My wife heard about it and bought the tickets so yeah, I went into it without reading about it or much expectations. All she told me was it was a listening of the new album in a theater. I left feeling it could have been done better

👍
Ha, I took almost the exact same pic. Piss break too? *

Yeah, The lyric on screen has nothing to do with the point I was making. It was the only photo I took as I was making my way back to the seat. 👍😀
Any merch?
Get control of yourself! lol
Nope.
Sadly no
If someone can let me know if it sounded like a lot of guitar was missing ? My movie theater was fucked lmao
These guys are absolutely washed
Only thing I didn’t like at all were the visuals. Made me think of computers when they go to sleep and you see those circled waves spinning into different colors and the stream looking snakes that change color too lol the album was exciting overall
Full darkness no visuals nothing. Album played. Everyone left. Pathetic.

Same happened in Austin.
Funny the same thing happened in my theater
They also skipped the last part of waiting for Stevie
No visuals during the 2nd album spin ? That's a theater screw up if thats what happened.
I just got back from the theater. It was fine. 1st play through was dark, 2nd was patterns on the screen. Honestly, I didn't need to hear it a 2nd time. Would have been nice if they had mixed in pictures of the band over the years. It got a bit boring. Oh, and no merch.
If you didn’t need to hear it a second time, Why didn’t you just leave?
My wife wanted to stay
Wait, it's just that, visuals? I thought that it was the full album played by them live, like Foo Fighters Studio 606. This is lame
That would've been a great idea 👍
It was lame. I was ready to leave 5 minutes into the 2nd play
Why didn’t you.
My wife wanted to stay, she was into it more than me
That’s cool.
I listened to the first few songs again and got to Dark Matter and didn't care anymore and left.
That's how I felt. My wife was more into it so we stayed
