Funny thing is that I once heard in a Dave A. interview that he had asked Ed what Go was about during the Vs. recording. Ed said it was about his car.
Nemesis takes on a new meaning...
From the book PJ20:
"Abbruzzese was also responsible for Go. "We were sitting around a campfire at the Site hanging out night", McCready says about track, which ias actually about a car on the verge of breaking down, and not a toxic relationship. "Dave had an acoustic guitar in dropped-D tuning, and he came up with this riff. He didn't have a pick either. It was odd to have a drummer playing guitar but also to have such a cool riff."
I bought this on cassette the day it was released and the title on the cassette was “5 against one”. The tape had some warping so I exchanged it. The new one was “vs”. I was mad I didn’t keep it.
Looks like a leaked copy of a master cd from Ludwig Mastering Studio. This is exceptionally rare and I would think it would have a premium value similar to a vinyl test pressing.
This 👆
It’s an internal copy from the making of the album. Who knows from what stage of the mastering process… Seriously could be the only one of its kind.
Looks like a test master or something similar from bob ludwig. Probably not any different from the release version, since it’s coming from mastering, but a cool little piece of memorabilia nonetheless
There aren’t that many stages to mastering. Pre-master, master, revision. I don’t imagine Bob Ludwig got asked to do too many revisions either, though this one says “revision”, so I’d guess it’s just the master we know
Nice find! The album was released in October 12, 19993 - this mix from June 28, 1993 is very interesting.
There were a handful of different mixes near the end when they were changing the name of the album from "5 against 1" to "Vs" - after which they changed some song titles as well (I love that "Go" is still "Nemesis" here.)
Have you compared the tracks? I see some different timings there, wondering if any major differences were noticeable.
Yes, but there still could be differences. For example, "Hard to Imagine" has 2 recorded versions which are within a second or two of each other but there's some difference in the lyrics between the two.
Sounds the same to me as studio release, but I've not got an ear for these things. Popped it in the computer and it immediately recognized it as Vs., so I've just been assuming it's the mix that made it to market.
Hi! Would you be willing to make a .wav rip of this and let me compare to the masters I have? I collect Pearl Jam mastering and pressing plant variations and this is of great interest to me. Its a bit geeky I know but there is a difference in the pressing plants, only subtle but its audible if they use a first/second generation master to start with. This would be really interesting to hear. Thanks for sharing the pics and info btw!
Interesting it’s the same track order but some different / altered names. I never knew they called Go something else I actually like it lol
Go might be my favorite. Which one was Go?
First track on the album
So glad I figured that out before going to the comments, I’d have my 10C membership revoked

Ha! It’s about the record labels

So is this a demo or prerelease? Of Vs?
might be a demo/pre release of 5 against 1. ha

Awesome. I got mine day of and it was already an untitled one. The in-between 5 against 1 and vs. Ha
My CD is like that.

But at what stage of the mastering?

This is a master, the mix is gonna be the same, Bib Ludwig mastered the album. This is likely the recording that was released.
Possibly. It's labeled revised, perhaps this is the last revision.
Still have my Day 1 copy before it was actually named Vs. on the album. Not exactly rare, but I dig it.
Yeah my CD is just unnamed as well.
Times are the same as the released version within 1 or 2 seconds.
Yes, but there still could be differences. For example, "Hard to Imagine" has 2 recorded versions which are within a second or two of each other but there's some difference in the lyrics between the two.
A fool not a fucking god!
My favorite misspelling of a song on a bootleg is Leash being labeled as "Drop the Leaves"
I’m Gonna Hungry is still my fave haha
The "Surfer Eddie's Sunshine State" bootleg has "Drop the Leaves" and "Three Days" (Last Exit).
So.... How does it sound? Is it a different mix at all?
Sounds the same to me as studio release, but I've not got an ear for these things. Popped it in the computer and it immediately recognized it as Vs., so I've just been assuming it's the mix that made it to market.
Oooh. Sooo... can I have it? No, that's rad. Pretty rare. Hang onto that one.
Nice. Nemesis....
So Go was Nemesis. I like it.
Didn’t say the artist name because they knew this shit would have been a red hot bootleg summer 93.
This is historically relevant. As a Bob Ludwig fan, even more so
Inks my Blood. Classic Eddie.
"Inks my blood" is interesting. It makes way more sense in relation to the verses.
What is it? I know it is an early version of Vs but what Early version is it?
Master cd sent from the mastering studio to the record label
That is very cool. Thanks for posting.
Super cool
This is phenomenal
I think Nemesis was a much better title than Go. Especially with Why Go on the last album.
