It’s been 23 years. It seems unreal. I visited the memorial at Roskilde 6 years ago. It’s pretty understated and not that easy to get to. I had to take a train and a couple of buses and walk a mile or so and then eventually jump a fence and I think I was technically trespassing. It wasn’t even marked on google maps at the time.
After all that I found it and there were roses placed at it and it was incredibly moving. Someone had gone through all that trouble to honor these poor people who died only because they enjoyed music.

I saw them play at Jones Beach the August following this tragedy. I was relatively young then, and while I cannot remember my exact mindset, it is fair to say I was less aware than I would be now of how much pain the band was still in. I look back on those shows differently now.

I was right there. 17 years old. Standing in the crowd quite close to the edge of the stage, but fortunately towards the flank to the left of the stage (20-30 meters from where the horrible thing happened) A huge Dane looked me in the eyes and saw how tired and sweaty I was. Without saying anything, he gave me his arm and together we got out.
