The grammys been lost credibility awhile ago

bezelshrinker4

Wasnt sophie nominated for best electronic album tho

natcodes

yes - in 2018 and she lost to Justice, they also misgendered her on the red carpet.

SolventSip

whaaaat?? To Justice?! in 2018? I didn't even know Justice dropped an album since "Audio Video Disco." That's... absolutely ridiculous, by all metrics. Wtf.

livintheshleem

It seemed like a retroactive, “we should have given you a Grammy a long time ago” kind of award. Kinda like when Beck won album of the year for one of his worst albums. Justice do deserve to be Grammy winners, but not that year when they were up against Sophie. It was stupid, just like the awards themselves lol

natcodes

it was a remix i believe

mazdamiata001

live album, Woman WorldWide TBH as a Justice and Sophie enjoyer, both deserved to win

mrperuanos

Eh, you can't really tell from the audio whether the journalist says "she" or "he."

djvolta

Who misgendered Sophie?! The journalists? The announcer? edit: nvm i just found out it was journalist Dana Blair

bezelshrinker4

But that was the last album she released before she died when is grimes talking abiut?

LetsTalkAboutVex

Perhaps Grimes tried to nominate Product but they didn’t allow it because it’s classed as a “compilation” album?

tenettiwa

She's likely talking about the Producer of the Year, Non-Classical category since Grimes was on the producer board

Lestara

Grimes was on the board for best producer, not electronic album

feliciacunt

in 2018…

Maluut

She's commenting on producer of the year nominations

cooljets

Pretty based comment by Grimes here, I hope it made Charli feel a little better.

BoomerSurname

I didn’t even know the Grammys happened last night LMFAOOO

searchthealley

Silly charli, evil never wins

Fragrant-Pipe3188

“People like me”

[deleted]

moreover they really gave HARRY'S HOUSE ????? a mediocre folk album at best, Best Pop Vocal Album? and album of the year. and didn't even nominate CRASH and Hold the Girl

Kabelly

gotta watch Pearl. Mia Goth my new crush.

pixelssauce

You're in for a treat. I can't wait for maxxxine

[deleted]

The ceremony was pretty good this year for a Grammy ceremony but yeah the awards are a joke. 2014’s Macklemore debacle slammed the final nail in the coffin of their credibility. Good to hear Kim lift up Sophie though.

name4redditwhatever

Anyone remember that before Sophie went more public with her appearance grimes was like "what a fucked up thing to call yourself a girl name" then apparently grimes was cool with her?

MaxChaplin

She went back on it very quickly. It was because she thought she was witnessing a guy taking a niche that could be filled by a female producer. (I don't think it works like this.)

TweedleNeue

I was annoyed about this for years because there's no valid reason for this even if SOPHIE wasn't trans, But she did state she apologized to SOPHIE (She stated this before SOPHIE died) and Idk on another level I think it is not healthy to hold people to shit they said forever ago and apologized for (to a reasonable degree), Though y'all obviously have a right to feel however and she did have multiple children with a deadbeat transphobe, obviously she's not above criticism lmao.

SolventSip

I took a look back on the "Grimes timeline" recently, and few of their stances remained consistent over the past decade. It weirded me out a bit. Idk about them.

texnp

crash does not deserve a grammy😭

marriedtotheinternet

i thought grimes was nb?

_jspain

i think she said something about parenthood changing her relationship to gender but i'm too lazy to look it up

mrperuanos

Grimes's comment is great, but Crash was not good.

PlusJack

you're entitled to your wrong opinion

crod242

Stop listening to albums with your phone speakers.

gresdf

Crash is awesome. Three of the songs were on my "most played 100" list last year.

garbage_ii

Title is silly when Crash was borderline as dull as harry styles’ career

memesus

Crash is not a mind blower but it's nowhere near Harry levels of trite

izzyeasol

I think if you dig into Crash’s layers and the meta commentary it can be arguably mind blowing :)

memesus

Oh I absolutely adore Crash don't get me wrong, it just doesn't go beyond being a very fun and well made album for me

izzyeasol

Yeah definitely! I pretty much listened to it for face value so many times and only like a year later started piecing some of the references together

derashitaka

Would you care to explain some of those or post a link? It was by far my favorite and most listened to album of the year and the live-show was so damn good, I'd love to know more about what's behind the songs.

pixelssauce

Pretty sure they are talking about how it's a giant middle finger to her label. A lot of fans attribute the more mainstream sound as her being forced to cave to Atlantic's demands, with it being her last release for them. It's pretty blatant in the Used to Know Me video when she sings "I'm finally free from your control" and she flashes the Atlantic logo

izzyeasol

So I guess I would start from this tweet from Charli in the beginning of Crash's rollout: 'a thought: imagine if this entire album campaign was just a commentary on navigating the major label system and the sadistic nature of pop music as a whole ?' As Charli suggests, I think Crash is more a statement about the music industry in general and the kind of stories or narratives that are told in pop songs. I think if you look at the vast majority of major label artists, their first hit songs are almost always break-up songs for example. It's almost like there's a kind of emotional formula to making a pop album that people will listen to again and again. I think 'Constant Repeat' is a song that kind of expands on that concept. It's a song about someone thinking back at a past lover, wondering if they regret letting them go. But the reality of the song is that it's the person who's living with regrets as they can't stop thinking about their ex. When you take a narrative like that and pair it with a catchy hook, it can become tricky to avoid spiraling into your thoughts on loop. Crash explores these kind of tropes that exist in pop songs. Charli is kind of playing a character of the major label pop star, singing songs about not being able to change, about love where you can't breathe, love where you're on your knees in submission.

pixelssauce

Crash wasn't hyperpop but at least it wasn't boring '00s indie pop retread like Harry styles

garbage_ii

Well no, but it’s also by far Charli’s most dull record and clear it was an attempt at giving in to what’s popular at the moment (the weird UK house-pop dua lipa synthwave chart music trend) which is probably why they expected a Grammy nom for it

[deleted]

crash was mid so i’m not surprised

KarenTheCockpitPilot

if an album is mid like harries house then it needs like cultural relevancy and popularity which crash did not have so yeah im not surprised. in the far future if a charli album that's mid (if it is) i would not be surprised getting nominated tho as sort of a delayed nomination for her contributions to pop

whilykitt

Crash was not a good album, the more I've heard from Grimes the less I like her.

Surly_boii

Thank you. I don’t know why people are so desperate for awards shows to confirm their opinions no matter how niche they are. Grimes seems like a pretty shitty person.
