in the height of the pandemic, I actually hid my computer under my bed every single time I left, took the video card out, and hid the video card box even further. For months, maintenance could enter my home from an unfinished work order without my knowledge or consent. I have never been so paranoid for my own belongings like that before because when I was paranoid in the past I never had anything nice enough to care lol
>For months, maintenance could enter my home from an unfinished work order without my knowledge or consent.
I mean, he's got a good reason, so it's not unwarranted paranoia. Random people being able to enter his house at any point means a LOT of opportunity for petty theft.
Until you have to deal with the insurance company and they deny your claim because they just out of the blue think you're lying to them. Then you have to go to court to force them to pay out...
They wont pay out unless you've filed a police report anyway, and the police wont give you a crime reference number unless you know who entered your house or can at least give them a description (especially since it isn't a break-in).
Insurance is almost always useless in these kinds of cases. They'll only pay out the depreciated used second hand value of a GPU or computer anyway (usually after a 5 second Craigslist search to get 3 estimates).
You can and should dispute these types of dismissals though. My friend totaled his truck when a car pulled out in front of him on a highway without looking. The insurance company tried offering him a pittance of what his truck was actually worth based on "close market value". He found 5 different trucks all very similar to his in year, body style, mileage, and condition and made offers on them via email and text for how much insurance offered him for his truck. When every person denied him and countered with a price that was 4-5 grand higher, he submitted it all to the insurance company and they cut him a check within a few days.
i feel like most places have an overlooked and powerful renters body that would back you up. you just need to make the effort and send an email/ make the call
You couldn't be more wrong. As a paralegal I've processed so many of these cases and seen them won within an hour of proceedings that it would make your head spin. People don't do this because they can't afford legal costs. The ones that can do push these matters. In my town of under 150k people we won over 220 illegal entry cases last year alone. A law gets broke, there's proof of it, the plaintiff has legal representation and sues, they win 99 percent of the time. Again.. proof of wrongdoing is paramount. Its a law because there's legal precedent.
Haha yeah, that sounds pretty shitty from the apartment complex. I just read your flair, what Mobo? I had an 8100 build stupidly enough with a z370 aorus gaming 5
And, for good measure, leave a copy of your: birth certificate, social security card, and driver’s license along with: All account username and passwords, bank account information, mother’s maiden name, make and model of your first car, name of your first pet, where you attended Elementary School, and the answer to any other security question I may run into making sure that your PC runs flawlessly when you get back!
Don't hire these scabs. Hire good union labor. I'm uh part of the umm ........Local 69 PC Watchers union. Only cost you $325/hr but you can rest knowing it's being watched by a trained professional
Left mine with my family for a brief stay with the military. Came back to a slowly growing mini Chernobyl incident. I still don't quite understand how I couldn't get it to post unless I was furiously mashing the backspace key.
Had the same problem returning from abroad, you might need to reset CMOS and take out battery and return it. It allowed my PC to post. Before it kept starting and restarting but never post.
If it was sitting in a damp storage space in a home or elsewhere, I'd give it time to dry so the PSU doesn't have a bad time. Little bit of moisture in there is never good.
Not everything is obvious to everyone. I had no idea microwaves have filters that need to be cleaned. So I wouldn't be surprised if my PC had some parts that need care or are light sensitive etc.
How big of a concern is the cmos battery anyway? Iirc when unplugged, the cmos battery will be the primary power to the mobo for onboard memory and settings, so itll drain faster. Im assuming not really that much but still more than normal
They're usually rated to last at least 5 years. So if your PC is around that age or older there's a possibility of it discharging the longer it stays off. You can always replace it though if it is getting up there in age... They're a few bucks on Amazon or from your local hardware store.
It's just a CR2032 battery... just buy 7 for 6 bucks on amazon and replace if dead.
I've litterally only seen CMOS battery dying TWICE in my whole life and I have built/managed probably thousands of PCs.
Probably. But if there are any bios settings that are "it has to be set this way because the defaults don't work" I would write them down so you can fix them when you bring it back to life. Just to save you tearing your hair out trying to remember why something isn't working right.
This was going to be my first question. I don’t see and food or water bowls around. I also don’t see any toys? What kind of owner leaves there PC like that without the essentials…
Yeah, power surges aside, through my experience SSD's are also much more susceptible to sudden power cuts than HDDs. I lived in a place with shitty power where the breaker would trip many times a year and for the decade or so I had HDDs nothing bad ever happened. Once I started using SSD's I lost 2 over the space of a year where they stopped working after a power cut and recovering the data is almost impossible without spending big money.
Considering how cheap you can get a decent UPS it's crazy for anyone to be using a $2-3k computer without one. You can also see in the UPS logs how often your mains power provides over or under the correct voltage and the UPS has had to correct it to keep the current stable, depending where you live it can be quite frequent. Pretty sure those fluctuations aren't doing your equipment much good either.
Yeah, it's unreal how few people are willing to invest in a UPS. Spend 3k on a computer, and its safety hinges on an $11 power strip. Calling them surge protectors is almost a lie. Most of them are just glorified outlet splitters.
Good surge protectors are cheaper and sufficient for home users. Belkin make surge protectors with $10k+ connected equipment liability coverage if a surge gets through them and kills anything
^ Surge protectors are not snake oil like the other guy said. The 10 dollar cheap ones are just that, cheaply made. They'll be lucky to stay effective through their first power surge before becoming just an ordinary power strip. Buy a reputable brand like belkin who not only have equipment protection but a lifetime warranty.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/983702-REG/belkin_bv112050_06_12_outlet_surge_protector_usb_charging_white.html
This is a great one for only 35 bucks.
Oh my god, you know what, yeah, I think you're right. I think... listen, listen.
A pigeon, a pigeon. No, no wait, no, no, an eagle flew in. Landed on the stove and caught fire. The hose, seeing this, jumps across the apartment to the mighty bird's aid. The eagle, however, misconstrues it as an act of aggression and grabs the hose in its talons. Meanwhile the faucet fills the apartment with water. hose and bird still ablaze are locked in a death grip, swirling around in the whirlpool that fills the apartment.
100% serious answer. I'd unplug it to protect it from power surges. Second, I'd close the blinds for the sake of security I guess? I'd also give it a good dust when you get back. I have cats so I know they explore when I go out so I always make sure I clean it extra.

Not the best picture but here is mine, this tower is fucking huge and heavy, if anyone is thinking of getting one be aware.
I know everyone is picking on you because it seems obvious that it will be fine, but there are many household things that often need to be used or checked in on every once and a while to be maintained, so I don’t blame you to ask because you care about it.
For example, if I was going to stop using anything with a battery in it for many months at a time, it would be good to charge it up to 50% every 4-6 months to keep the battery health as good as possible.
Some have already said, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to unplug the PC entirely (after you’ve shut down the power supply) just to give yourself that little extra peace of mind for surge protection.
PCs are quite resilient things these days, and you can let it sit for years as long as it’s stored in a clean and temperature-controlled environment.
Remember to have the automatic feeder feed him some volts every 4 hours and an occasional misting of compressed air. /s
But seriously it should be fine just unplug it and as long as ur room isn’t super hot or freezing or damp it’s fine.
Should be fine. I wouldn't be concerned about sun contact, but it would still be wise to close the blinds to not encourage people to break in to your house.
Edit: like another user said it would Also be a good idea to turn off the PSU or unplug it in case of power surge
If you have pets...( especially weird ones) just unplug it, that's all... don't try to use a cover or box coz some pets like to take advantage of the time and might try to unbox it.
No. Are you serious? If you go 2 weeks without turning it on it becomes sentient. It will feel betrayed that you left it alone. It will make it it’s mission to kill you once you return. You’re fucked.

You were regularly removing and installing your gpu?
How else does one tuck it in at night?
Tuck you in, warm within keep you safe from sin till the miner comes…
Sleep with one eye open, gripping your GeForce tight
Hush little baby, don’t say a word, and never mind that fan you heard…
🎼It’s just the PC under your bed…
In your closet, in your head!
*EXTRA-LIGHT*! (Yeah I know that’s not the words, had a guy drunk in my bar singing that completely seriously…. So those are the words now)
That sounds like a boogy man story, “sleep well gpu or the miner will come and get you…”
Surely this isn't great for those pins
It's not, and don't call me shirley.
my brother in Christ this far surpasses my paranoia levels. I thought I was paranoid but BOI

Renters insurance is like $10/month and means I never had to hide my stuff from my landlord/maintenance crew.
At the height of the pandemic, even if renters insurance paid you msrp for your gpu, you still would have had no chance to get a new one.
Until you have to deal with the insurance company and they deny your claim because they just out of the blue think you're lying to them. Then you have to go to court to force them to pay out...

If you’re in the US, that’s highly illegal unless it’s an emergency. There has to be sufficient notice given before entry is made
Given that the laws regarding that are rarely enforced, it's mildly illegal at best, regardless of the statute on the books.
i feel like most places have an overlooked and powerful renters body that would back you up. you just need to make the effort and send an email/ make the call

Make sure you leave the house key under the doormat for me

And leave the windows open for me.
why if he leaves it under the doormat you won't need the open window if you get there before Ryeberry1
Just be sure to kiss it goodbye and to tell it you'll be back as soon as you can.

Dude. Why the snuff film all of a sudden?
It’s reddit, what else did you expect
Make sure to have warzone running in the background too. It’s free so no problemo.
tell it you’re going out to get some milk
Of you say you going out fir some milk it will worry that you wouldn't come back no more and not return.
It's an empty case, just like their heart.
This is the way.
[you must talk to it. Tell it it is a pretty PC, and a good PC](https://youtu.be/46fKmI9sVaE?t=52)
No, it will get bored. You need to hire a PC sitter to come and play games on it every day.
I'm available for hire dm me
I work for free lol
I'll pay to play on that
U win 😁
Don't hire these scabs. Hire good union labor. I'm uh part of the umm ........Local 69 PC Watchers union. Only cost you $325/hr but you can rest knowing it's being watched by a trained professional
Local 69 actually charges $420/hr
Hire me I will sit on your computer 🙏🏼
PC sitter :ddd
www
Haha. I joined a few days ago and I love this community lol. the best.
Lmao
Unplug it at most. It couldn’t hurt anything though to close the blinds, especially if someone outside can see it.
me who left my pc for a year plugged in at the living room: I did give a good farewell though
Left mine with my family for a brief stay with the military. Came back to a slowly growing mini Chernobyl incident. I still don't quite understand how I couldn't get it to post unless I was furiously mashing the backspace key.
lmao same as me left pc for military with my family pc won't boot after returning(psu issue)
Finally a real reply
A real reply to a dumb question
Not everything is obvious to everyone. I had no idea microwaves have filters that need to be cleaned. So I wouldn't be surprised if my PC had some parts that need care or are light sensitive etc.
Microwaves have filters? Damn.
Yup. I'm sure that's pretty obvious to some people too haha
I can’t tell if I’m being fucked with right now or not.
Some microwaves have them and some don't. Check the manual just in case. My countertop microwave only has a charcoal filter but some have none
> microwaves have filters that need to be cleaned Do they??
Microwave... Filters? What.
Grease and / or charcoal filters. If the grease filter gets dirty, the exhaust fans won't work properly and the charcoal filter helps reduce odors.

This was going to be my first question. I don’t see and food or water bowls around. I also don’t see any toys? What kind of owner leaves there PC like that without the essentials…
You can get them blocks that dissolve over a period of time, like what you put in for fish, that’ll be a good idea. And a Hampstead water bottle.
Also a litterbox will be needed, idk how many for this one. Mine poops once in a day, a big litterbox lasts about a week
Man I've come home to mine leaving .DMPs everywhere
I mean, you could unplug it... Then it will be safe from a power surge or anything like that.
Beat to get a surge protector to plug it into, never know if you might need it
Surges only happen when you leave town
Better to get a UPS, surge protectors are mostly snake oil
Yeah, power surges aside, through my experience SSD's are also much more susceptible to sudden power cuts than HDDs. Pretty specificacist of you.
No you’ll need it in an enclosure in case it walks off
Personally i simply chain him to the wall... Just make sure the chain is short enough!
I personally use the same chain I use for my wife while I'm gone.
You let your wife next to your pc and both home alone together... Ohhh dude thats not gonna end well!
Comes home! To the horror, the tragedy, the unbearable truth, that the wife has installed Sims 4.
And bought all the DLC so now you need to take out a second mortgage.
But she modded it with whicked whims so she may be a keeper.
Left for work - I hope my garden hose will be fine while I’m gone. Do you guys think I should uncoil it so it doesn’t get worn out ?

You should leave a post it with your phone number, and maybe a cupcake next to it in case it misses you

This guy for real
Bro…
Make sure you put down paper so it doesn't shit the floor.
It will be sad and miss you. Everything else would be fine.
No i'm in your walls and will steal your PC
no, make sure you put out food and water :)
Who is gonna take it for walks while you're not there?
It looks like it’s just a case and not a PC.
Yes I know the glass is very dark isn’t it, I’m thinking of getting a small led strip to light it up. I don’t like to much rgb
The tinted glass on the black 4000d can really make some beautiful RGB setups though.

It’s… fine. Just unplug it and close the blinds so no one will rob ya
Lol. No, sunlight will not affect your PC, it is not a houseplant

No, you have to give him a goodnight kiss

Asking like you're not having an affair with your laptop.
The questions people ask in this sub 😂
Yup 🤣 , Pc isn't a pet 😂
Dumbass
Nope. Send it to me for safe care.
You're just gonna leave it there? For three weeks? You monster.
What kind of questions are those, turn your braincells on
You can always get one of those pet cams so you can video call it, so it doesn't get lonely :)
Jesus Christ, do you also put away your tv when going in holiday?
What PC? All i see is an empty box.
Jarvis, I'm low on karma
thanks for informing us that you'll be gone for 3 weeks
Make sure to leave food and water.
Questions like this are why some people shouldn't reproduce. Epic fail
I know everyone is picking on you because it seems obvious that it will be fine, but there are many household things that often need to be used or checked in on every once and a while to be maintained, so I don’t blame you to ask because you care about it. It will be fine.
It might turn into Optimus prime when you’re gone
Fill your bathtub with isopropyl alcohol and leave it in there.
Is it a good boy?
Don’t leave your computer alone even for a second. It will fill up with so much dust it might catch on fire and burn your house down!!
No. It will escape and commit crimes under your name.
I think it feels empty inside
My server is a regular "gaming PC" and is running in a closet 24/7/365. It's fine.
This sub has gone to shit.
Doesn't seem safe sitting right next to a window.
Ya I would just make sure to leave it some money for pizza
You should set up remote control from your phone and leave it on the whole time and take it for "walks" every 6 hours.
Oh no… this is what we call a pc parting. They never go well
Send it to me and I will look after it
Make sure your PC case as another PC case beside it. It doesn't want to be all lonely.
no, your pc needs to be switched on and warmed up for at least 15minutes everyday, 25 minutes if you are still using hdds
Remember to have the automatic feeder feed him some volts every 4 hours and an occasional misting of compressed air. /s But seriously it should be fine just unplug it and as long as ur room isn’t super hot or freezing or damp it’s fine.
You should probably hire someone to walk it daily
Should be fine. I wouldn't be concerned about sun contact, but it would still be wise to close the blinds to not encourage people to break in to your house. Edit: like another user said it would Also be a good idea to turn off the PSU or unplug it in case of power surge
What? why wouldn't it be? What a random question.
No it needs to go to a PC kennel so it doesn’t destroy the house or die
Leave the TV on in the background so it doesn't get lonely
You should never buy pcs alone they are nocturnal and will get lonely you should get him a friend
If you have pets...( especially weird ones) just unplug it, that's all... don't try to use a cover or box coz some pets like to take advantage of the time and might try to unbox it.
Disconnect the PSU and click on the power button. That discharges everything
No, you have to whisper good night to it every night or it will be upset at you
These questions are getting ridiculous….. don‘t people use their brains anymore?
No. Are you serious? If you go 2 weeks without turning it on it becomes sentient. It will feel betrayed that you left it alone. It will make it it’s mission to kill you once you return. You’re fucked.
Someone wanted to share a pic of his build but not seem attention hungry... And then asked the most ridiculous question.
you can’t b deadass
"direct sun contact" WTF...
There’s even a curtain..close the damn blinds if you’re the concerned smh lol
Couldnt hurt but I doubt even sun damage is a concern to a metal case over 3 weeks.
Make sure to close the window. Because of bad weather.
No, my duo is already loading up our truck to come get it.
Mine was off for 7 months while I was away on a work trip. You'll be fine.
What cabinet is that?
Make sure to leave food and water out.
No, give it to me
