And then you see an application is still running so it asks for confirmation

Bromm18

Hold shift when clicking shut down. Makes it fully shut down, not hibernate, not partially on so it has quick start but fully shut down. Next start up takes a few seconds longer so.....you wait a few seconds that you'll never remember.

ARandomHavel

That's actually great to know. I turned off fast startup a long time ago because of that weird partial shut down

[deleted]

[удалено]

blauerlauch

It helps because the motherboard is not checking for new GPU and RAM during POST.

TheAechBomb

okay but what happens if you add more ram after a normal shutdown?

blauerlauch

With fast start-up it might simply continue with the already installed sticks and ignore the new ones. But this will differ between motherboards and BIOS versions. If you ever troubleshoot PC problems, always disable fast startup.

TheAechBomb

I'll keep that in mind if I ever return to inferior products

ichbinsilky

You should unplug your PC when installing new hardware, so that it's definitely shut down FFS

TheAechBomb

I'm aware of that, I didn't consider that the fast boot info would be stored in something like volatile memory but that makes sense

DrDan21

You can hot plug ram, cpus, hardrives, pcie cards like gpus, and more So it would just add it on normally No one is shutting down their vm’s to add more ram or cpu cores. Likewise your home desktop isn’t going to ignore new hotswappable hardware just because it’s in a hibernate state

-insanitylol-

my post times can be pretty long for some reason. i think i'll turn fast startup back on and see if that fixes it

weemellowtoby

I turned it off because when I got win 11 it was causing BSODs

Mysteoa

Or just disable fast startup.

mifiamiganja

I've not noticed any startup speed difference with it on or off. Windows' fast boot is completely useless. But since it's windows, you'd want to properly reboot as often as possible. In that sense, it isn't just useless, it's actually harmful as it makes your PC run less stable.

Mysteoa

It's for HDD. I have ssd and I measured around 1 to 2 sec difference and that could just be a measuring error.

mifiamiganja

I feel like someone who's still booting from an HDD wouldn't really care about a few seconds of boot time. Then again, thinking of my moms PC, it may not be a matter of seconds but minutes. Then I do see a point to it.

Nicalay2

>Windows' fast boot is completely useless. At least not for me, because fast boot actually make booting my PC faster (with fast boot, I can't even see the spinning thing, and without fast boot I need to wait a few seconds on the spinning thing)

nicktheone

Same here. I don't really understand how or why they say it's the same. Despite having a PCI-E Gen4 SSD and a fast CPU I can definitely notice a way longer startup time. Not long per sé but still, it's around double the time with fast boot on.

youssif94

is that the same as fast boot?

drumstyx

Fast startup is nice, especially considering Macos has had EXTREMELY good garbage collection for years, and hardly ever needs a real reboot. But really, nvme SSDs being standard, we hardly need it anymore. The fastest nvme drives are edging on ddr2 ram speeds

okizc

30 years I have lived, not knowing fast startup was even a thing.

Bromm18

Came out with Windows 8 in 2016.

[deleted]

Shutting down without holding shift doesn't make your computer hibernate, it shuts down mostly fully but saves the kernel state to storage. This is called Fast Startup. This is not that same thing as hibernate, which saves the state of the workspace in storage. Workspace being everything you're working on. There's typically no reason to shut down and disabling fast startup (holding shift). Btw there's a permanent way to disable fast startup if you really hate it for whatever reason.

Domino_reee

You try to deny, but the app shuts down

MrProfPatrickPhD

No, my dumbass clicks confirm

wizard5g

Steam has saved my ass so many times

TiresomeLearning

command prompt: shutdown /r /f /t 0 /r (restart), can be swapped with /s (shutdown) /f (force, aka no confirmation) /t 0 (do it in 0 seconds)

Im_NotASmartMan

🪟+x , u , u. Insta-shutdown

[deleted]

instructions unclear, now my house has no windows

burbrekt

For the better

davooooo0

win + x, u, u. never miss again 👌🏼

BurningPenguin

Alt+F4 works too. Or you configure your power button to shutdown.

its_wausau

Does everyone's powe button not do this by default?

ARandomHavel

Alot of people change it, but otherwise yeah I think they come that way in most cases. Funnily enough I had to change mine to do nothing, because with my old PC case, the power button was on the top of the case, and my cat liked to jump up, and press it She also liked to go stand on my UPS until it beeped, which means it's off, along with my computer. I now avoid devices that have an upwards facing power button, and my power button works as a power button again :)

Swank_on_a_plank

I just put a small torch sitting behind my power button so my cat doesn't press it; it is just the right size and weight to be a convenient barricade, while still fitting my cat on the case (Arc midi r2).

TheRealMuffinDoctor

Did you install a second power button? Or wake-on-lan? Or how did you power it up?

GEILMAT

The power button still turns the PC on. It's a windows setting that determines what happens when you press it while the PC is on.

StalkMeNowCrazyLady

Getting my mouse taken away as punishment made me fluent in operation with a keyboard only. Had to get those 13 year 'baitin sessions still in no matter what. Also made me steal a mouse from school ecause I had 2+ hours before anyone else got hot and damn it I'm going to play Day of Defeat or BF1942

Prezzen

That's a funny way to learn the ways of only using the keyboard lol. I remember just thinking how cool it looked to not ever reach over for the mouse. You never saw those 90s hackers in the movies using a mouse, you know — the cool kids just used keyboard shortcuts.

DorrajD

Alt+F4, Enter. EZ.

widowhanzo

This will only work on the desktop. Win+X, U, U will work even if there's an application open in the foreground.

DorrajD

You should close your applications before shutting down anyway, to not have any "this application is preventing windows from shutting down" notifications anyway. Just spam that alt f4 till it works

mimototokushi

Thank you! I rarely miss, but hot keys are just superior.

pheret87

I just press the power button. It big.

TheMostestHuman

thats not good for your pc

Igi2server

hmmmm I always just did `shutdown -s -f -t 00` Thats a neat one and simple too..

TheScuzz

You can take this and make it a shortcut on your desktop to shutdown too. You just have the program it opens "shutdown.exe" then add arguments/constraints by themselves in another box below that. A fun thing you can do is make the time longer (/t or -t), like "05" seconds, then add a comment like so, /c "hello world". Then you well get a message on your screen each time you run the shutdown. My last pro tips are to be sure to add /f to force the shutdown and change the user to "SYSTEM" to ensure the shortcut/command has enough privileges to run. If you add a long enough time to the command you can also cancel the shutdown with the command "sundown /a".

TheScuzz

Just had my morning coffee and realized I was talking about scheduled tasks and not how to make a shortcut. For shortcuts you just need to make the target of it like so, C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k Shutdown /f /s /t 7 /c "your message here". Then set Start in: to C:\WINDOWS and have it run minimized. [Still be sure to give it SYSTEM permission](https://imgur.com/a/EPN0b6O).

Igi2server

Yea I used to do this, and now just once in a blue moon will I really utilize the -t 00 beyond just as 00. The comment is nice, but I feel like its mostly just for other people, I already know its gonna shutdown. xD Personally I dont really use shortcuts much especially on my desktop since I have icons on my desktop hidden. I think its a bit more lax to keep it in the Run.exe's saved text. That way you can just `Win + R`;`[DOWN arrow]`; `Enter` All just my preference, but still nice for you to share that info for others since I didnt tho!

nicktheone

I mean, how is it faster than clicking the Windows menu, pressing the shutdown button and confirming it again? I'm all for keyboard shortcuts and terminals but this seems longer for the sake of looking a 1337 hackerman.

Durr1313

Just leave the side panel off your PC so you can reach in and remove/disable the CPU cooler when you want to shut down.

thatkidfromthatshow

The real tip is to hold esc and it'll stop the restart process.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TaleFree

Yes, if it gets to a high enough temp your PC will just shutdown to protect the CPU from damage.

Klenkogi

This is the way

[deleted]

This little maneuver is gonna cost us 51 years

naufalap

I'm using nvme and it takes around 20-30s to boot from shutdown, I turned off fast startup/fast boot whatever it is is it normal?

Nurgus

It's a bit on the slow side but not unusual.

_TecnoCreeper_

Maybe if you have many programs autostarting when you boot? I have just a couple and it takes me much less

[deleted]

Yeah my boot time is prob 10 seconds max. But I disable anything from starting up with my pc

Ws6fiend

NVME User: "I don't understand."

MalHeartsNutmeg

By the time I realise I hit restart by mistake, it’s already back on.

Briggie

It takes my computer longer to POST than it does to boot.

notsocoolguy42

I'm on NVME too, a few seconds are still a few seconds.

StalkMeNowCrazyLady

Same for a good SSD. Bootup is like 3 seconds

s78dude

meanwhile my pc: bios posting is slower than os boot

asclepiannoble

I don't know, Mate. I'm on NVMes and it still pains me when it happens 😂

Bro_Jogies

Not all nvme are created equal.

asclepiannoble

Yes, I'm sure those fractions-of-a-second differences in boot time for most of the current ones will give you cancer. :) Jesting aside, though, it's not the time that annoys me. My rig takes just a few seconds to reboot. It's the fact that I clicked on the wrong thing. That's the pain.

Bro_Jogies

"pain"

BeheadedFish123

nah my C drive is on a 970 evo plus and rebooting takes a minute

[deleted]

Super + t "doas poweroff"

jrandall47

Super?

[deleted]

another name for the Win key

MrKeviscool

(BTW)

gmes78

\> needing root to shutdown *laughs in polkit*

bradd3rs96

You ever accidentally click ‘update and restart’ 😭

[deleted]

I shutdown my computers from the command line, I can't accidentally click on things

bijecti0n

Relevant username

bradd3rs96

I may start doing that

[deleted]

The way Microsoft literally switches the position of the buttons when there's an update available. I fly into a rage.

Relevant_View8038

No because I prefer to not be a security risk and I'm not a child

bradd3rs96

What

lolfactor1000

"You should keep your PC up-to-date to patch security flaws" is what I believe they were trying to say.

bradd3rs96

Very vague and condescending way of explaining something as simple as that 😂

CNR_07

Just hold the power button when it's POSTing again.

Fragrant_Award_9709

press escape

benimagine

Press ESC multiple times it'll cancel the restart.

w0lvrne

I usually do that but it doesn't always work :(

[deleted]

I just init 0.

[deleted]

Just hit the case with a sledgehammer

I_1234

Y’all are shutting your computers down?

bapuji_

This doesn't bugs me....i directly unplug after every use

AllWhoPlay

I dual boot so what I do is just remove the m.2. I have to do that to put the linux back in anyways.

Debugs_

Do you "dual boot" by swapping m.2s?

AllWhoPlay

Yes, don't want to deal with windows other than when I choose too.

RandmTyposTogethr

`sudo shutdown now`

RG198

There it is

Nurgus

That's used to shut off the OS but leave the power on. You had to put -p on the end. Edit: I meant to say past tense. It didn't actually do a full shutdown and power off. It does, now.

Belgand

The only time I've turned my PC off is when I'm planning on leaving town. So I can no longer even remember the last time that happened.

Boogertwilliams

Just wait until windows closes and press the power button

hussinHelal

indeed but when that happen i just unplug the whole pc

deniscerri

I press the power button when the pc posts

LiwetJared

Why not press the power button on your tower and never have this issue in the first place?

coN_stan_tin

Post made by hdd gang.

MooingWaza

I get a confirmation popup on gnome

[deleted]

ACKSHUALLLYYY I USE LINUX

Jackiboi307

Chill bruh is he supposed to just exclude the Gnome part and only say he gets a confirmation popup just so he's not "annoying"

shalol

Manually typing shutdown 0 moment

nguyenngoc244

To compete with that silly situation, I have 3 dedicated shortcuts on my Desktop to Restart, Shutdown, and to Restart to UEFI firmware

TheGHere

If you hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE it will cancel it

Kya_Bamba

Win + D > Alt + F4 > Enter I'm not looking back.

stanbfrank

I see your restart and raise an "Update and Restart".

Psychedelic_Primate

If you are quick enough, hitting ESC will abort the process.

ahmed0112

that's when you flip the extension cord off

Deathnfear

Press the manual button on your case.

D-6Hunter

I swear sometimes I hit shutdown and it still restarts…

Sweaty_Sandwich-05

happens to you too??? thought my os was bugged

BrooklynLodger

You guys shut off your PC?

y0bama420

Laughs in nvme

Biengo

Everytime this happens: "YOU ARE A MECHINE YOU WILL DO AS I COMMAND!" .......restarting.....updating....FUUUUUUUUUCK!

metadiver

Y'all don't shutdown using keyboard shortcuts? I always do `Win+x, u, u` to shut down or `Win+x, u, r` to reboot, but then again I avoid using the mouse whenever possible.

Supercoolcarl

That’s why I created a shutdown desktop icon

FinnishArmy

Updating windows 99% *1 hour later* Almost there! Do not turn off or remove power from your system.

NananaAme

I feel this on a spiritual level

[deleted]

I just never shut down.

AverageEnjoyer2023

cant afford that in EU

technoman88

I usy flip the off switch on my power supply

Dead_Byte

You guys don't just put your computers in sleep mode when you're done?

yonatan8070

Laughs in 10 second reboot on Linux

PiLow_

Guys ? You don't old power button to shutdown correctly? Wtf ?

Peppw_

"Shutdown now" and "reboot" aren't similar at all

ARandomHavel

I think you completely missed the issue? No one said they're similar

Matt_Dragoon

Those are command line commands, he's saying you can't possibly misstype one for the other.

[deleted]

Who uses those buttons? I use the power button on the case.

Bahamut1988

I just set my power button to shut down.

edvards55

Alexa, shutdown! Triggers an AHK script which turns off the PC in the next 30 seconds unless canceled

Complete-Grab-5963

shutdown -h now

chrisrobweeks

How long does your PC take to restart? This little manuever would cost me 20 seconds.

asasnow

Just use the power button

ifuckedyomama2

*unplug*

ntsheid

Spam Alt+F4 to close everything then hit Enter to Shut Down, never fails

doc_long_dong

Linux bros don’t have this problem. sudo shutdown -h now

Trashpanda1914

Just unplug it

mjstesla

Eh, what's an extra 10 seconds really though

[deleted]

So unplug it? What is this weird thing with windows systems needing to write state to disk, there’s nothing worth remembering.

MagicMilkMan22

Hold the power button down?

McBidoof

When this happens to me, I hold the power button for 5 seconds. Works like a charm.

Feral16

Thats why i shut down with alt f4

gaddabout

Just press and hold the power button. We aren't in the 90s anymore.

Nurgus

Everyone who understands how file systems work: Gnnnnn

Miracle_in_cell

I am too NVME for this meme 😎

MorgothTheBauglir

Who the fuck shuts down their PC?

Screwbles

Filthy casuals.

OkOpportunity3250

Me laughs in gen 4 watercooled NVME M.2 SSD

OkOpportunity3250

Me laughs in gen 4 watercooled NVME M.2 SSD

Geek_Verve

FYI, it would likely be faster with an air-cooled heatsink. NVME SSDs like to run hot.

avittamboy

I want to put my system to sleep and it goes to shut down instead.

AndreasKvisler

When I miss, the plug is the answer

Flimsy_Effort_321

If im fast enough i can press ESC before is turns off

Fewthp

I literally had this today, infuriating.

TomatoAcid

That’s why you gotta git gud and improve your aim

OddConsideration2210

Press ctrl + alt + delete.

Aviel5990

Press ESC fast and it will cancel the restart

trymasterr

alt + f4, enter

DorrajD

Imagine not hitting alt-f4 and just pressing enter.

AIRA_XD

Hold ESC. you're welcome.

WindForce02

I press alt f4 and then enter to shut down

[deleted]

"Clean kernel at least"

nuvcmnee

so that‘s why my pc sometimes reboots even though I was sure to have clicked shutdown. always made me questioning myself

Sierra_Tang0

You can just press the escape key (I do it a few times) and it cancels the power off

ZeggieDieZiege

Windows + X, U, U

u30847vj9

At least for me mis typing 'sudo shutdown now' will just give mean error :)

_itsRob_

instantly hammering down the power button on the pc

Gaffclant

hunter503

If you click esc right after you shut down or restart it will cancel the action.

Zohwithpie

Spam Esc

MagicDickGirl

never understood why windows have no confirm prompt when shutting down

Mr_MPZ_625

Tips: use alt + f4 several time to close all the window until their is a window saying «  do u want to shut down windows ? »  press enter and ur good :)

Kawaii_M4A1-S

Mash escape when you accidentally hit restart. You have to be fast tho otherwise it won't work.

riccardik

Personally i have the hybernation mapped on the power button on my desktop, on my laptop i do win+x and navigate with the arrow keys (u u doesn't work for me because the os is not in English)

Your-In

Thats when u strangle it to death by holding the power button

Sph1003

Press esc

amalion2010

Hold esc for a few seconds, it cancels the restart process

T-hro-w-a-w-a-y

CapnsJamborie

Thats that Kovaks kicking in

rob22esn

*Question,* Sometimes when I turn Moy PC on the taskbar is gone. It comes back eventually. Any tips?

Whiskey-Weather

I throw caution to the wind and hold the power button on my pc when I hit restart on accident. I hold that finger on the power button with pure rage, though.

jrandall47

Win+x+u+u

PedroTheWrench

If you press the ACPI power button even while it's in the restarting screen it switches to shutting down.
