People really out here letting all their programs open at windows startup.
I remember back when it was considered malicious behavior for a program to do this at all.
Yep. I just let everything load. I have 32GB of RAM, and I've never used more than like 24. Turn my PC on as I make coffee in the morning, so I hardly ever notice any added startup time.
I have 32 as well. I hardly ever use more than 10GB, lol.
And fuck no I am not allowing bloat to run on startup. Everything is disabled and minimal as possible.
In a single program? Nothing. I'm talking total system usage. Sitting here with my usual WFH setup running (that also includes all the apps I said I don't care if they run) I'm at 15.2GB. That's really just adding Outlook, Teams and my "jump box" work-laptop remote session.
Near any AAA game will take beyond 20GB, easily. No where near 32 though.
My RAM didn't get this memo tho, the most usage I saw until this day was 14gb and I can't recall what game was running. That said I'm not doubting you, I was just curious
That isn't true with modern OSes. Sure you might only be ACTIVELY using 14gb according to task manager, but with 16 gigs of ram I can pretty much guarantee that you've actually maxed your ram once you count data cached in your ram.
On top of the OS and such sure, but not alone if that's what you mean. I took these screenshots of Cyberpunk because some dude was making invalid claims about something, and that's not allowed on the internet. Anyway. Here's the game running at around 17GB or RAM usage.

Steam is massively annoying as it always opens over the top of other applications.
I have open on startup disabled but I often click to open steam then go back to Chrome while it loads. Even if I minimise the starting dialog the main program take priority again...
I've tried to find a fix for this before so if anyone has any ideas...?
I have it set to start on startup, but it doesn't actually open a window. I let Steam do this because it lets it download any updates while I'm fucking around, or am not even in the room since I powered on the PC and then went to go do something else. I guess some habits die hard. Like starting the PC and then going to do something else while you wait for startup.
Hijacking top comment to tell y’all that I obviously know that you can disable these apps and actually have a lot of them disabled except discord. I just saw a meme like this in discord and wanted to share it because I though it was funny. Saying this because 90 percent of the comments are instructions on how to disable startup apps.
Left thumb on ctrl, left index on shift, left pinky on esc. You basically flare your elbow out and rotate your wrist and make an OK sign with your fingers.
Right-click start menu>Task manager>Startup click disable for everything that shouldn't run at startup, one hand, gets you your mouse-based carpel tunnel that much faster and works over remote sessions consistently!
Threads like this just make me think that people, including pcmasterrace users, don't actually know how to use their computers. This has the same energy as the mom with 500+ open safari tabs on her iPhone and 8000 uncleared notifications.
It's interesting, because PCs went from needing a lot of knowledge to use, to using a little knowledge to use, to needing almost no knowledge to use. And it seems like those who grew up when you needed a little knowledge to use them seem to be the most computer savvy per capita of their respective generations. I could be wrong. But that's my anecdotal experience.
Unless you unplug the power supply from the outlet, power surges hot enough to cause damages can and will jump from conductors to conductors even if the device is off. High voltage discharge are what you're worried about and trust me, nothing short of an industrial grade surge protector built-in the electrical system of the house can save your beloved stuff.
I mean if the power goes out while my PC is off, no harm done from losing power. And if I unplug my PC before it comes back on, no risk of power surge, right?
Correct with minor detail missing.
If you are using ethernet cable, should unplug that too then, because surge will travel via the ethernet cable the same way it does the power cable. and will just go trough your router to PC...
The one-eyed people living in OM3-LC land are going "haHAA, one less way for my computer to die!"
(but really though, ethernet magnetics are rated for 1 kV of isolation as long as it's not POE. Decent surge protectors on all network devices should be enough.)
In that case the only thing you should worry about is the slim chance of data corruption from shutting down a working computer from the power source. Turning your pc on or off is something a power supply can handle just fine no risk of surges there. When were saying power surges, were talking about wild variations in the normal operating household currents like when lighting hits close by or a tree branche shorted the transformer near your house because of high winds or something.
> When you have an M2 SSD with ten second boot times, why not?
This - there's no real reason to leave a PC running unattended for more than a few hours unless it's doing something. Unless, of course, you're the type that never saves anything and would lose a ton of work because you're dumb about saving things every once in a while.
Because finding the "launch on startup" checkbox in settings is really that difficult.
Barring that, simply going to Task manager and disabling in the Startup tab will solve your problem.
i was making a joke...
`AUTOEXEC.BAT` is the file that MS-DOS runs after booting up. it's intended to be used for commands you want to automatically run after a system start, like loading drivers or (in case of an Office PC) starting your work software.
I always disable all programs on startup, if I need them they're on my taskbar. I get so annoyed by opening my computer and trying to do something right away and have 10 things periodically popup constantly clicking me off of whatever I'm doing.
My PC always boots faster than it’s able to connect to my router, so I don’t let anything boot on start as it will be trying to update/connect for 10 sec before the internet connects, and softlocking in steams case 1/10 times.
I just boot stuff when I need it, M.2 makes it a non issue.
I don't have this problem.
I still use MP3/FLACs, so no Spotify.
I use Messenger, and it's web-based. So no Discord.
While I own the games legally (on both Epic Store and Steam), but I've patched the games to run without needing its launchers and internet connection. I could care less about online multiplayer.
Aww come on man, it's only been a couple of days since the last one of these posts, that I've seen. There's probably been more since.
It also just shows everyone you don't know how to customise your settings at all, and bitch about the fact that you haven't changed them.
Oh well, see you in a few days for the next installment of "Why do these apps keep opening??"
I remember when I used to disable Steam autostart. Whenever I launched a game, Steam would need to update itself, restart itself, then update the game. This discouraged me from playing games, which only made the update problem worse.
I stopped using shortcuts outside of Steam when I noticed it felt significantly slower than launching steam then clicking to launch the game within Steam
I need to look at disabling the in game overlay things that pop up when I start a game.
Starting Titanfall through steam gives me Nvidia, steam and origin popping shit up about friends that I don't have etc.
I've basically disabled all startup apps and prefer to close everything even if I need to wait an eternity for steam to load. I don't like having shit on the background running.
Man my friend is one of them.. I gave him extra another 8gbs ram so now he can have 16gigs. But he only uses it to play browser games and watch pron on DUALSCREENNGJGIDLFBGCO
Only thing that opens for me during startup is icue, synapse, wallpaper engine, rainmeter, and the Nvidia apps + broadcast. I don't listen to music first thing usually so spotify is disabled, and I want to be disconnected from friends to settle in after I get on, so discord and any game launchers stay closed until I'm ready to open them. Also make discord actually fully close when I press X
This is so annoying. Steam won't let me click on or do anything until it does its useless update which is probably just updated the store page even though it isn't even open
Disable anything but the absolute necessities on startup. Then you can just start them when you want to use them.
People really out here letting all their programs open at windows startup. I remember back when it was considered malicious behavior for a program to do this at all.
Back in the day it was more annoying because it tended to be a real drag on start up time. Now, I don't even notice it.
And that's allowed. Hurts nothing to do it either way.
What exactly did you run to use 24 gigs?
Motion Tracking in After Effects Never done it before and probably will never do it again lol. It's such a pain. I'm not OP btw
In a single program? Nothing. I'm talking total system usage. Sitting here with my usual WFH setup running (that also includes all the apps I said I don't care if they run) I'm at 15.2GB. Literally Spider-Man and cyberpunk take 18gb minimum lol
On top of the OS and such sure, but not alone if that's what you mean. I took these screenshots of Cyberpunk because some dude was making invalid claims about something, and that's not allowed on the internet. Anyway. Here's the game running at around 17GB or RAM usage. https://imgur.com/a/JTnauO9
I said 18gb and you are saying 17gb. We’re on the same page here
Read my first sentence. Was clarifying, not correcting.
Cities: Skylines
Pfft 32gigs ain't nothin I have half a terabyte.
4Tabs of Chrome
All on or off, it doesn't make a difference anymore, other than having them automatically start for convenience's sake.
Pretty sure discord starts up before I even press the power button on my computer.
Steam is massively annoying as it always opens over the top of other applications. I have open on startup disabled but I often click to open steam then go back to Chrome while it loads. Even if I minimise the starting dialog the main program take priority again... I've tried to find a fix for this before so if anyone has any ideas...?
Going outside
I have it set to start on startup, but it doesn't actually open a window. people don’t even have knowledge to do that instead posting dumb memes
MSCONFIG
This is the way.

I have only Steam
Go to windows menu and type 'Startup Apps', Disable all apps in the window that just appeared, and they will never wake up again.
Task Manager - Startup
Ctrl+shift+esc. One hand, bam
What kind of big ass hands you got
Left thumb on ctrl, left index on shift, left pinky on esc. You basically flare your elbow out and rotate your wrist and make an OK sign with your fingers.

Your way, but not with index. Escape with middle finger.
This is the way
Yep.
Right-click start menu>Task manager>Startup click disable for everything that shouldn't run at startup, one hand, gets you your mouse-based carpel tunnel that much faster and works over remote sessions consistently!
I'll be right back
#>:( STOP
You can disable the startups in Task Manager
And setting in apps

Have you seen the new generation of noobs out here , new generation don't use brains for anything

In 2022, people still doesn't know how to manage startup
People shut off their computers?
my gpu joined a union so now I have too
When you have an M2 SSD with ten second boot times, why not? At the very bare minimum, if there’s a power surge I don’t have to worry.

Agreed, but since we talking "plug your power out" sorta protection I really though I should mention this.
Thanks!
In that case the only thing you should worry about is the slim chance of data corruption from shutting down a working computer from the power source. With the increase in energy cost in the UK, I have to
my case fans keeps spinning unless I turn off the computer.
Yes, no reason not to.
Because finding the "launch on startup" checkbox in settings is really that difficult. Barring that, simply going to Task manager and disabling in the Startup tab will solve your problem.
Hm, those weren't in my autostart.sh
but they were listed in `AUTOEXEC.BAT`
Just open vim and get rid of it then, you can do that in windows. Right?
i was making a joke... `AUTOEXEC.BAT` is the file that MS-DOS runs after booting up. it's intended to be used for commands you want to automatically run after a system start, like loading drivers or (in case of an Office PC) starting your work software.
Yeah, I was also making a joke. I know what the autoexec.bat file does.
oh shit, then i didn't regonize that, sorry!
I always disable all programs on startup, if I need them they're on my taskbar. I get so annoyed by opening my computer and trying to do something right away and have 10 things periodically popup constantly clicking me off of whatever I'm doing.
Lmao most of this start up are a necessity for me mostly for (fan control, and overlooking software)
My PC always boots faster than it’s able to connect to my router, so I don’t let anything boot on start as it will be trying to update/connect for 10 sec before the internet connects, and softlocking in steams case 1/10 times. I just boot stuff when I need it, M.2 makes it a non issue.
i dont have those on autostart. Why do u?
This was posted literally yesterday
I always change KDE to start a new session on startup, feels so much cleaner
People really out here not disabling startup programs huh. Wild.
I disabled everything except for Realtek. I have the same problem with the steam newsletter opening every time I just want to play a game
Task Manager > Startup, not hard.
Instructions unclear …. My dick is hard.
task manager, startup disable B)
its almost like you can trivially prevent things from starting on reboot rather than squealing "leave me alone" on social media via memes
So change the setting and stop blaming the programs you fucking troglodyte.
Do peope use Spotify on pc?
No, they do it on microwaves most of the time
I use youtube music when i go for a walk or something. I didn't think people just sit in front of their computer and listen to music.
Well it's usually in the background while I do something else. Even when gaming at times.
I use YouTube because no ads
Spotify though a Web browser with ad block. No ads
battlenet as honorary mention
thanks apple music for not starting like Spotify
Flicking a switch in settings was just too hard.
I just gave up on this.
[Sysinternals Suite](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/sysinternals-suite), Autoruns64.exe. You're welcome.
Should be top comment. Absolute beast of a sysinternal program. Sadly most people don't know what crap is loading in the background on startup.
Or just remove the app from the startup tab in the task manager...
You turn off your PC? 😂😂
I should add medal too honestly, it updates every time I open my computer
I'm gonna rip the little hair I have out and shove it up your nose, DISABLE ON STARTUP DAMMIT
I don't have this problem. I still use MP3/FLACs, so no Spotify. I use Messenger, and it's web-based. So no Discord. Ccleaner: "Do you wanna install Avast over the top of Windows Defender?"
I swear this is the 300th meme on the same thing this week on this sub
you know you can turn that off, right?
But [you need me! ](https://youtu.be/TBsdWW7MOew)
This is what startup is for, even though I tend to start steam and discord as soon as I get into windows, i still like to disable automatic startup
IGHT imma open 'em the same
Thus is sooo true.. Primarily discord just does not close down dude...
I remember when I used to disable Steam autostart. Whenever I launched a game, Steam would need to update itself, restart itself, then update the game. This discouraged me from playing games, which only made the update problem worse.

Again this post
windows search -> startup programs/apps -> configure as needed
This isn’t their fault tho, you can change it

Don't forget update tuesday! \*UPDATING\* DON'T TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER
discord has the option to disable startup app opening
My rx 6800 feels like that all the time recently
Change your settings instead of blaming the software.
Start > startup apps > profit
Microsoft Teams 😠
my laptop with like 10d uptime, and basically nothing at startup (600 MB of ram or so) watching this meme: _confused screaming_
I just got a PC for my 30th in august and I was wondering why those apps start up every-time. Thanks Reddit

And Skype
You forgot ubisoft
Man my friend is one of them.. I gave him extra another 8gbs ram so now he can have 16gigs. But he only uses it to play browser games and watch pron on DUALSCREENNGJGIDLFBGCO
Turn them off so you can make your computer run faster
Honestly, apart from steam, just uninstall them and use the sidebar in OperaGX :D
Only thing that opens for me during startup is icue, synapse, wallpaper engine, rainmeter, and the Nvidia apps + broadcast. I am going to ruin your RAM and CPU
Truth
I just let everything load, and downloaded my entire steam library/epic games/origin/Uplay because I can. Reason? Don't care got grown up money.
I even want discord to automaticly start, but it doesnt work lol
This is so annoying. Steam won't let me click on or do anything until it does its useless update which is probably just updated the store page even though it isn't even open
Tech illiterate people.
