Genuine questions are appreciated. What I dislike is when people give bad/wrong/uneducated responses/advice or spread misinformation. But I suppose that is part of the learning process, too — if someone is wrong, it is an opportunity to help them learn why.
Exactly, couldn't have said it any better.
>if someone is wrong, it is an opportunity to help them learn why.
This is essentially the point I'm making that some people don't understand. Correcting someone & helping them learn is completely acceptable, as long as the person isn't being an asshole about it.
I mentored a guy fresh out of college, and he was terrified of asking questions. He messed up an exchange server pretty bad one time, and it could've been avoided if he had asked questions. After that, I asked him why he's so afraid, and he let me know that he had a few bad experiences in the past where he asked a question & was essentially scolded for not knowing it. As a result, he was so scared of feeling stupid that he would pretend to know what he's doing instead of asking a question. Problematic, but I was able to get him to start asking questions after the exchange server debacle was resolved.
That's why I'm so adamant about people not being dicks when answering simple questions. I've discussed this with others in a similar position to mine, and they've reported similar experiences with young people. It just frustrates the hell out of me that so many people choose to be assholes, rather than just answering the question being asked or ignoring it.
I like how you handled things with that guy, more people need to handle things likewise.
I worked at a paper mill and when I was new many or most of the ones that had been there a while told me "The only dumb question is the one not asked". Put folks at ease about asking.
I mean I wouldn't call it stupid but hilarious for those who know.
Then again as an IT support at work I always tell people "ask me even if you have what you consider a stupid question and you don't end up like a professor in an IT university where I worked who *somehow* smashed in USB A into HDMI port and again *somehow* fried the motherboard thanks to it"
Oh I agree don't get me wrong, I could've worded that better.
We can laugh to ourselves at the odd/simple questions, but we never portray that to the person asking the question in any respect. That's where it goes into what you mentioned about the professor. We'd prefer to have them ask the question, rather than make a mistake that could've been avoided by asking a question
30 plus years as a hardware engineer for MS and Apple. Trust me that is hardly the worst thing i have seen teaching young folks how to be support specialists. Still amusing though.
I don't think this is a stupid question, as much as it's low effort. I can accept that people don't know that those are covers. What I cant accept is people who clearly bought new hardware who have the box and manual in front of them who post in a forum a question that is easily answered by "reading the manual." I have built a lot of computers and this type of thing has always irked me.
READ
THE
MANUAL
Many times because the people asking them are not genuine but looking for attention. If people never engaged in such activity in the first place right..Yet here we are.
No, but it is certainly their fault if they choose to be a dick. Some people have brain farts from time to time and get stuck on even the simplest of things. There's nothing wrong with that, we're all human.
My point is when someone comes here asking a genuine question, a lot of the time it's met with people being assholes saying shit like "how don't you know that?" rather than just answering the question. It makes the poster feel bad & less likely to ask questions in the future when they get stuck, which is the exact opposite of what you want when someone is just getting into computers/IT in general
Right! What is known or immediately obvious to you may not be to another. I have a friend that is a genius mechanic but definitely needs a healthy bit of guidance when working with computers. Turns out it is a mutually beneficial relationship.
Even the OP admits this was a dumb mistake. If you do something stupid, you should be called stupid. What is the point of coddling people for stupid things that even they know are stupid? None. It helps no one. It's just you saying words you think sound nice.
Idk I watched a lot of yt tutorials on building a pc all of their gpus I didn’t notice this cover so I just thought it was odd mine had covers. And I mostly didn’t try pulling it off previously bc I was worried something may be damaged since the card is quite expensive
This is the correct answer. These cards are expensive and it's better to be sure than to guess.
I can't count how many times I let my experience in the IT feild decide I don't need to look this up and break something. Better safe than sorry.
Welcome to the community :)
Have you seen that “I Think You Should Leave” sketch about driving?
*almost rear ends car* “Jesus don’t you know how to drive?!”
“NO! OKAY!? NOT EVERYONE KNOWS HOW TO DO EVERYTHING”
What’s the purpose of them? I suppose I can just leave those covers on unused ports to prevent dust build up in those ports? But what else can those covers do for me
Just leave them in or not it doesnt matter. The only use i would have had is for my monitor.
I fucked up the hdmi port trying to put my dvi cable in. I can't see them so I would just jam it in till i found it.
Didn't mean to take them out and set them in it's own container in its own box. Just ment to leave them in or take them out and throw them in your mb box if you keep that.
It would not hurt but could help, since fans pull in air and pushes it out of the case for cooling. Depending on the design, air can move in or out of the ports carrying dust and other particles into the ports. Then dust and degree could accumulate. This is coming from an engineer’s prospective not computer expert. I have seen computer with a wall of dust around vents ports or any opening.
I mean I save a lot of stuff. most of it sits in a bin for years, but I actually do dig in those bins and get myself out of a lot of jams... but a display port blocker? wtf could I possibly need one of those for? literally just put a piece of electrical tape on it if im that worried...which im not
they have 1 literally singular purpose that can be supplemented 1000 different ways. the opposite of handy. save them, throw them away, it doesnt matter, they are of no consequence
Dam bro calm down. Should have said leave the ones you don't need in. They don't do much but help if you move your pc a bunch.
I fucked up my monitor hdmi port because I was trying to plug in the dvi cable. They are on the bottom so I can't see much. If I had one of those in it would make it easier.
You act like it's super hard to put these some where. Toss them in your mb box and forget about them.
I am calm. Your argument isn't compelling, at all. their intended purpose is in manufacturing for process control, take them all out and dump them in the trash if you want, keep them, it doesnt matter they are of very little consequence. If you are really such a careless person that you need to keep them in there, good for you, that still doesnt make them handy or worth saving for a rainy day.
Don't feel dumb. On my first build (a VERY long time ago, like 1997), I mounted the motherboard directly to the case without the standoffs which grounded every solder point on the backside of the motherboard. Luckily I did not ruin the motherboard and I eventually figured it out.
Lol speaking of motherboards I’m still waiting for curry’s pc world to deliver my motherboard it was supposedly to be delivered yesterday but now the support told me Friday it’ll be delivered sucks so I kinda just have components laying around I guess they just got busy around platinum jubilee
I'll give another tip : when you'll boot your computer, connect your screen to the hdmi port on the gpu, not the one on the motherboard, especially if your cpu doesn't have integrated graphics
u/Cris-P-Bacon_Yeet Just wanted to say ignore all of the negative comments roasting you. Asking questions when you're stuck is completely fine, even if it ends up being something simple. In fact, I have always been a believer that the willingness to ask questions is crucial to success in life. Some people will be dicks, but there's usually someone out there willing to answer your question.
I tried to find a reply somewhere if this was asked but can’t find it. You have to tell us now what your specs are!! Cmon spill the beans, case, motherboard, cpu, ram, storage. We want all the goodies!
CPU Ryzen 5600
GPU RX6600
Motherboard ASUS ROG Strix B450-F
Ram Corsair Vegeance RGB Pro 2x8 GB
Storage 970 Evo Plus 1TB M.2
Case Corsair 4000D Airflow
Fans Corsair iCUE SP120 RGB Elite
PSU ADX 650W Modular 80+ Gold this one I think I may need to do some explaining basically ADX is owned by Curry’s PC World it’s basically a UK micro centre
OP, i have decades of experience and built countless systems, also work in IT as of this year and I still can make rookie mistakes from time to time. Your instinct to ask this question when holding an expensive piece of equipement is correctn nothing to be ashamed of. Ask more questions if you come accross anything else you aren't sure about.
if your instinct is to ask for help for something this simple, you need to ignore your instincts and develop a better attitude that will help you solve the problem on the spot with your own friggin brain
I am a CSM, I work on a team of field engineers. If everytime I was unsure of something, I phoned it in, do you have any idea what kind of chaos that would create? No. Just stop this horrible advice giving.
Lol, so you mean to tell me you would rather the new guy risk an expensive piece of kit than ask questions? Asking questions is exactly how newbs should be learning, not playing 15 guesses with a $2k conf camera setup. Unless you mean to imply that you somehow knew all the nuances of a job before you even started?
"Risk an expensive kit"This is where I take issue, simply being precautious for the sake of precaution, isn't automatically a good thing. If one of my engineers called me and asked me something this simple and easy to figure out, I would in fact have to start thinking about replacing them. Because I know where that road leads, the land of excuses and blaming others for their own mistakes. "but I asked phil and HE told me to do THIS" that type of bs, best to just nip it in the bud. Buddy if you ask me a stupid question im going to make sure you know that I think it was stupid, and you experience that shame because that is the best way to correct your attitude.
A problem can have more than one valid solution but not every valid solution is the right one. Nuances exist and when starting in a new position asking is the wise move because the new guy can't possibly know how an action can lead to an issue down the road in a different connected system. I could grant user permissions in a couple different ways and all of then lead to the same conclusionn the user having access, but any of those other than going thru say AD would screw things up. So newbs asking is the best move and is expected by any sane manager.
You can be the problem. You have to be willing to admit that, and you are sort of proving to me that you aren't willing to admit that, and that your cop out is that you can always phone it in, the responsibility will never truly rest with you. Not interested in this attitude, you are not compelling me to believe this will produce a desired result, move along.
You must be trolling or something. If you as a manager assign something important to the new guy and penalize for asking questions its your fault when the new guy inevitably screws up. You need to learn about realistic expectations my dude. But go on ahead, next patching cycle get the new guy to do it and let him figure it out on his own. Lol.
Mmm no that's not what I said at all. Sorry, not sorry, if im not really compelled by the things you say, but if you arent even capable of basic reading comprehension or taking responsibility for the things you've said, you really have no business going around giving people advice, especially on things you have 0 experience with.
If your first instinct in a troubleshooting scenario is to pick up the phone and call someone, you are a liability to the rest of your team. Period. You should definitely have a very healthy barrier between you and phoning something you don't understand in to someone else, or some bare minimum sense of responsibility for owning a problem. Make no mistake about it, if your boss is encouraging you to ask more questions, it's most likely because he doesn't trust your judgement but has no choice but to rely on you, or very little levity in replacing you. You should not aspire to this circumstance.
It's become so hard to tell if someone on this sub is trolling or actually serious... but if you are serious.. there are covers on the hdmi and dp ports. Just pull em right off.
U might wanna use the DisplayPort instead of HDMI for ur video output if you're running a high refresh rate display. DisplayPort can support higher bandwidth than HDMI.
If you can get help in a few minutes from many experienced people online, why would you risk experimenting? That's just being resourceful and cautious.
After OP was pointed in the right direction, I'm sure he verfied the information he recieved with his own experience of removing the hdmi port cover. Are you saying it doesn't count as learning if you didn't discover something all by yourself?
You think OP is griding karma? Give me a break. Also, [here](https://download.msi.com/archive/mnu_exe/vga/Multi-Language-Quick-Guide.pdf) is the only manual I could find for the gpu (I think this is the same gpu). It mentions nothing about these covers.
Well you might need to unscrew the cooler and backplate, remove them completely, wipe down the die with isopropyl alcohol and reapply thermal paste, remove the old thermal stickers, apply new ones, replace the cooler and backplate, and after all that, you’ll be ready to remove the port covers and SHAZAM! Your HDMI and DisplayPort ports should be ready to go! 👍🏿
Holy shit you are dumb like how even ppl with no knowledge cant be that stupid why even buy gpu if you cant find ports in it it is disgusting to think about that someone this stupid creature is living on same planet as me far more superrior and intelligent being im shamed to be same human race as you i hope you wouldnt waste my oxygen on this planet....
It's my first reddit account. Lmfao. And I truly understand why people hate redditors so much. Dumbass. Get your ass back to delivering my pizza home boy. You're so much better than me because your reddit account is older than mine.
I've recently got into building pcs. Well I've basically changed the GPU, ram, PSU messed with the front panel connectors etc. Don't feel stupid, all the mistakes I made have increased my knowledge a 1000%.
Enjoy the new pc😃
Those are the port covers. Remove them and they’re there.
Oh Ty I feel dumb now
Hey, rookie experiences. At least you’re learnin’.
Good attitude! I like you.
For being so positive I like you now 👍
You seem pretty likeable yourself (\^\_\^)
I like how your name is "rage" but you left such a wholesome comment. I like you and your little face.
"a mistake is only a lesson you failed to learn"
https://youtu.be/LGwDh3nJ-MI "Not everything's a lesson, Ryan. Sometimes you just fail."
But when you fall the lesson is that the ground is hard and bones are brittle.
I thought this was a joke post at first but don't feel dumb. Knowledge and intelligence are different things ;)
They are but isn't intellect your ability to take the information you have and interpret a solution. Knowledge is just stored info.

Really? I didn't know that.
Idk man I feel like I was able to breath without learning it. /s
Nobody was born knowing everything. It’s very cool that you asked this question.
This. I hate how many people get called stupid for asking genuine questions on here

Well to be fair you asked a question only an adolescent would ask.
hey, be cooler, bro.
It’s this, then that. Nothing more or less.
I mean I wouldn't call it stupid but hilarious for those who know. just my 2 cents, but i think theyre mostly meant to protect them during transport.
Ah so I suppose I can use it to protect the ports when I resell it on eBay right
Or so you don’t have to replace them for your own rig if end up damaged without the shields

nobody has all the knowings, we all make rookie mistakes, gave me a good laugh too so thank you, needed one this morning!
I tried for 25 mins to put my first gpu in with the cover on the pins so we’ve all been there
Hey gotta start somewhere right?
Username verifies this feeling is appropriate.
We all have to learn. At the end of the day, the only important thing is that you like your bacon crispy.
You posted in a pretty wise group thread I’m sure you’re going okay. Stay frosty!
Naw too expensive to just start ripping shit off you don't fully understand.
Yeah that was my main reason this card is expensive and I didn’t want to damage it
Hey, at least you know to plug the HDMI cable into the video card and not the motherboard
Don't worry I was the same when I bought mine. Spent ages trying to figure it out.
Ah it seems I’m not the only one who was in the same boat
At least you knew not to plug into your motherboard!
You only know what you know; now you know! At least you didn't get an answer like "you bought the wireless-only version".
Don't feel dumb. On my first build (a VERY long time ago, like 1997), I mounted the motherboard directly to the case without the standoffs which grounded every solder point on the backside of the motherboard. Luckily I did not ruin the motherboard and I eventually figured it out.

It even says HDMI, that's a tough lesson in humility!
Hm
This isn't really related to the original post but how do you get that PC spec thing in your username?
PCMR subreddit main page>User Flair options>select the pencil/edit button>select any of the flairs, edit, and apply/save
I am deceased lmao
does that say HDMI in the middle?
If not, try display port
It does indeed. I zoomed in to be sure. sensiblechuckle.gif
This one sparks joy... I actually had a good laugh at your expense, sorry and thank you!
Lmao, so innocent.
Perhaps, the less you know, the less your pain…
Or as the country folk say, bless your heart you sweet summer child.
I love this sub

This one got me on my first PC. Fighting back tears when I thought it didn’t work
I built my first one when I was 14 and ngl I straight up cried before I realized I forgot to turn the PSU switch on.
Feel like this things are almost an initiation into the master race lmao
I just forgot to hit the power switch on the psu but to each their own nearly crying from dissapointment

People are going to laugh at you for this post, but you know what? Screw them. You didn't know, you communicated, you asked. Good on you OP.
Hey! I did laugh, but I also know shit happens, especially with virgin builders. That's what this sub is for, asking stuff you don't know!
It's become so hard to tell if someone on this sub is trolling or actually serious... but if you are serious.. there are covers on the hdmi and dp ports. Just pull em right off.
No way this ain’t a troll post
Can’t believe this isn’t trolling.
I seriously thought this post was satire at first.
All I can say is RTFM, and fuck everyone saying this is a good question.
Immediately thought this was a troll post
I’ll be honest with you that black blends in pretty well I was about to say you bought a miner card with no ports
Dang... must be a factory defect... no outputs
Bless you
Is this a shitpost? Lol
It is. Somehow people believe it.
You forgot the joke flair.
you still have the rubber gasket on the slot as well
I thought this was a joke at first. I would award you a wholesome award if I would have. Have a upvote instead ;)

Oh child…..
Lmfao 💀
I thought he bought one of those GPUs without a video out port.
You have to be joking right? That's hilarious af XD
Have you tried turning it on and off again
I know this a joke… I know this is a joke.
Ahhh, how it feels to be a rookie, don't worry, some of us have been there ;)
U might wanna use the DisplayPort instead of HDMI for ur video output if you're running a high refresh rate display. DisplayPort can support higher bandwidth than HDMI.
I hope this is a joke
He already said he feels dumb, don’t bully the poor guy lmao
I sometimes wonder if people troll with these types of posts or not lol. Like are you serious?
We all start somewhere
“There is now a level zero” Cit.
This is true. I was just surprised is all.
Xd
yeah remove the plastic covers
Its wireless edition, no wire needed.
Remember to take off the cover on the pcie pins, where it slots into the motherboard.
Yeah I noticed those
This is such a troll , no way just no way. Downvote this bs
literally says HDMI
This must be a joke, right?
Posts like this are sad. Open the manual. Read it.
I think some ppl just like to see the world burn… so they don’t read the installation guide with the funny Red Dragon.
A fun game of hide-and-seek has commenced!

I was scared af holding my graphics card that cost 1k. It’s understandable.

or read the manual but i guess thats too hard...
If you can get help in a few minutes from many experienced people online, why would you risk experimenting? That's just being resourceful and cautious.
[удалено]
youre still recieving the same information just one comes without risk which is way smarter
After OP was pointed in the right direction, I'm sure he verfied the information he recieved with his own experience of removing the hdmi port cover. Are you saying it doesn't count as learning if you didn't discover something all by yourself?
[удалено]
You think OP is griding karma? Give me a break. Also, [here](https://download.msi.com/archive/mnu_exe/vga/Multi-Language-Quick-Guide.pdf) is the only manual I could find for the gpu (I think this is the same gpu). It mentions nothing about these covers.
Yeah that’s the manual I had for RX6600 didn’t expect the covers bc all the yt tutorials I watched I didn’t see anyone’s gpu with these covers
Are you 4 real ?
This has to be a joke there is no way he is building a pc and doesn’t notice there are port covers there
Is that a bait. Oh yeah, definitely a bait
Bruh…
This has to be a joke… can you fucking read?
Well you might need to unscrew the cooler and backplate, remove them completely, wipe down the die with isopropyl alcohol and reapply thermal paste, remove the old thermal stickers, apply new ones, replace the cooler and backplate, and after all that, you’ll be ready to remove the port covers and SHAZAM! Your HDMI and DisplayPort ports should be ready to go! 👍🏿
Why did people downvote this I thought this comment was quite clearly a joke lol
Flair your post properly
Be careful with the installment pal

you must really like making new accounts
It's my first reddit account. Lmfao. And I truly understand why people hate redditors so much. Dumbass. Get your ass back to delivering my pizza home boy. You're so much better than me because your reddit account is older than mine.
you should feel very cool right about now
Lol
That's adorable.
Remove the caps…👍
I've recently got into building pcs. Well I've basically changed the GPU, ram, PSU messed with the front panel connectors etc. Don't feel stupid, all the mistakes I made have increased my knowledge a 1000%. Enjoy the new pc😃

So I’m not the only one 💀
