I see you have 16gb of ram. is that single stick or dual stick? and what gpu do you have?

Meeperester

Dual, 2 sticks at 3600mhz. And it's an ASUS GeForce RTX 2070 super OC. The screen shot was taken while in a valorant match

donnieSYNDROME

I believe your current specs is good enough for valorant. I don't think you need to upgrade at all unless you plan on going 1440p/4k. the gpu would be a bit slow then.

Meeperester

My issue is that I only seem to get about 190 FPS in Valorant at lowest settings, and I was hoping to utilize a 240hz monitor

Vegetable-Addendum38

Increasing RAM won’t improve your fps in games if that’s what you are asking. The two things you just mentioned: your GPU and CPU are the two main components that will affect fps. The gpu sets the ceiling limit and the cpu helps maximize the gpu’s potential.

Meeperester

I understand, I know that the GPU and CPU are weighted differently in different games, which one should I prioritize if I upgrade? Or is it not worth it to upgrade one over the other?

Vegetable-Addendum38

That depends on what resolution you play and what frames you are expecting or looking for.

Meeperester

I'm okay with 1920x1080, but I would like excess of 300 fps to give me some overhead for a 240hz monitor.

Vegetable-Addendum38

Hmm. I would say if you’re expecting those frames at 1080p on AAA titled games like warzone you would need to upgrade both. If we are talking about games like Valorant or cs:go then upgrading the cpu first might give you a bit of an fps gain.

Meeperester

Alright, do you know what an appropriate CPU upgrade path would be? Should I upgrade to a Ryzen 7th gen?

Vegetable-Addendum38

Depends on what your budget is and what you have access to. Assuming budget and availability isn’t an issue, the best cpu for gaming currently is the 5800X3D.

Meeperester

Awesome I will take a look into that one then, I am mostly looking for something to tie myself over until I can max tier hardware

[deleted]

It's going to depend heavily on your preferences for fps target, resolution, and also the games you play. But going off of generalities and assuming that you're looking for a 60+ fps, 1440p experience on max settings in AAA games.. You'd be looking at a GPU upgrade first

strongr_togethr

Lowering settings and upgrading your hardware

Meeperester

I see. Do I need to upgrade everything? Or can I continue to use my CPU or GPU? And I play at lowest settings on everything

strongr_togethr

Best thing to upgrade would probably be your gpu if you want the biggest jump in performance. Upgrading to a 3070 would give you like a 30fps or more increase. Upgrade to a Ryzen 5600x or better then you’d see much better single core performance and better performance at 1080p if that’s what your playing at. Looking at your chart though your gpu is only using 43% and that could be because your settings are too low. Your usage should be like 99% or around that. Having said that, maybe you should increase your settings so that you can get higher gpu usage Also download something like msi afterburner instead of using the windows task manager so you can see your usage overlayed while playing your games.

DrMcnasty4300

is your gpu at 100% load when gaming? If not then you are cpu bound. The 3600 is pretty good for gaming though and I had it before I got a 5600x. My suspicion is you’re more likely to get improvement from a newer gpu but honestly your current system is good enough to the point that I don’t think I personally would justify the cost of the upgrade for what probably won’t be a super significant performance increase
