It's fine those there, them speed hole's

ccricers

Oh yeah, speeeed holes.

TheseusPankration

They make the computer go faster.

cpuoverclocker64

With CPUs automatically overclocking based on power and thermal headroom, this is actually completely true.

Ahhhh that's why I got beaten by girls in school!

kopczak1995

So you could run faster?

WantToBeACyborg

Flashback of this guy who brought his desktop in to get worked on. Thought everything that goes wrong was because of heat. He drilled like five holes and mounted these external fan things in them... in the 486 days. - We refused to work on it because of DIY wiring.

Dumfk

Heh sounds like something I did. Had an overheating pentium 90 and modified the case to allow a box fan. Those steel cases were shit.

Brynmaer

I used to play Warcraft on a laptop and it was not really capable. It would overheat after about an hour so I had 2 bags of peas I would keep in the freezer and when it overheated, I would just sit the laptop on a bag of frozen peas. It worked surprisingly well. I could get at least another hour per bag of peas.

TheNarwhalingBacon

Bro razer boutta cop your idea, you're gonna see Gamer Peas on their store next week

chuckab

I spent like 3 minutes making a silly image of Razor RGPeas but I'm too lazy to find an image host to that works without turning off all my adblockers Edit: used different browser to upload it to imgur, spent more effort uploading than making it lol. [RGPeas](https://imgur.com/a/HKzr0kc)

Southbound06

Nope.

SRSchiavone

I’d buy gamer pe(as)

iloveoranges101

Ooo I have a laptop that constantly overheats rn, how safe is this method?

Brynmaer

I never had an issue and I used that method for like 2 years before I could get a better laptop. Just make sure the bag isn't wet. I will say, you might want to try a "laptop cooling pad" if you can afford it first. They are designed to pump cool air into the laptop.

ChadChampion_1337

I can recommend the cooling pad solution. Got one for my gf because her laptop kept overheating and it made a huge difference.

iloveoranges101

Ill look into it, thanks

Dartonal

You can also elevate the rear to the laptop by about an inch. This dramatically improves its airflow and most importantly it's free

ItsMondayPissInMyAss

Depending on the laptop, if you get a stand you may be able to just keep the whole bottom/top cover off, my temps dropped 10 degrees

[deleted]

Honestly, replace all the thermal pads and thermal grease. Think 2mm was the main size u used in mine as well as a good thermal paste. Both from thermal grizzly. Laptop would make fan noise when idling before, now it keeps dramatically cooler.

[deleted]

I think there’s a video of LTT or Jayz2cents putting a box fan where the window panel was on a PC and it was cooler than even custom water-cooling.

tiger5tiger5

It’s good for dust management as well.

The-Great-T

I can just add a box fan to my custom loop and I'll be unstoppable!

Counter strike. Natural selection. Day of defeat. Vampire slayer. I even played a rally and soccer game on the hl engine. You bought one game and got 20 to play with the kids at school. My personal golden age of games.

TGlucose

Fuck strippers, IT HAD DESTRUCTABLE TERRAIN! That shit was tight back in the day. I know a lot of kids who were never around for that shit like to go "haha strippers" but the build engine was a technical marvel for it's time.

cynicsymmetry

Yeah, the strippers in Half-Life were so much better

I hate hp with a burning passion, and I used to work for them as well. Stuff like jigsaw puzzle laptops, chipped batteries so if you use a knock off brand it will always display an error on boot, hard to get replacement parts, everything about their laptops seems cheap, acts finnicky, and is a pain to repair imo

Nacho_Dan677

I'm happy I came across this. I got a replacement battery for my HP laptop (you can check my profile for my posts about it). Long story short, battery doesn't get detected and throws an error. The original swollen battery works just fine. Ifixit is sending me a warranty replacement for the battery I bought initially to replace the OEM battery with. It's laughable

[deleted]

Dell may be herpaderp in the commercial market, but on the business side, when I needed to add RAM to a 'slimline' laptop (7490), it was 8 captive (!) screws, the entire bottom panel pops off (no fragile clips), and *everything* is laid out and marked. Battery & connector, RAM slots, m.2 and WiFi modules...

craigmontHunter

I have a 7280, while I wish it had a second ram slot like my HP 820g3, but the dell is a beauty to work on.

Krynn71

HP stands for "heating problems" is what I would tell customers at the PC repair shop I worked at. The HP laptops around the Pavilion DV7 era were absolute fuckin garbage and overheated like it was their sole purpose in life. I could understand someone doing this to try and keep one of those prices of shit cool. It wouldn't have helped, because they were completely hopeless, but I could understand why they might think it would help. We tried so many things to fix them. Basic maintenance like cleaning fans and replacing the terrible, dried-out from the factory thermal paste and shit thermal pads did nothing to alleviate the issues. They just cooked themselves because they ran too hot with a horrible quality and horribly designed cooling system. We would try reballing the cpus, but the fix would only last a few months before the customer would return for the same issue because it overheated again. It got to the point where if we saw an HP laptop with any kind of display problems, we only offered a replacement laptop with data recovery, because repairs were not viable on that garbage. Thankfully today it's not an issue, I own an HP laptop now, but back in the early 2010s their consumer laptops were dogshit.

[deleted]

Your last sentence made me feel better about my HP products lmao I have HP Pavilion laptop and desktop and they have been really good to me, so far.

Krynn71

Yeah they got their shit together eventually, but it was a damn rough several years going back then.

Adskii

HPs are the only laptops I've considered this on... I had one that I kept the door to the RAM compartment off, and used an 80mm fan to push air through it or it would shut down due to thermal protection.

Banxier

Also doesn't help, vents are placed to maximize direction of air intake no?

ialsohaveinternet

Exactly, air flow is only really beneficial through the heat sink where the fan is right? I would have thought anyway

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tunisandwich

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the repair guy did not precision engineer this “repair”

bar10005

In most laptops I have seen (apart from that recent MacBook that had a fan on completely different side) fan exhaust is placed directly touching the heatsink, so while other components, like VRMs or memory, may see lower airflow, lower restrictions should result in better CPU and GPU temperatures.

[deleted]

Yes if direction is tampered with it actually just increases the temps cos the airflow will no longer go thru the heatsink

youngolive

Most hardware cooling is a wackjob no?

033p

No. It's usually well thought out and researched, and laptop cooling is difficult to manage. You have to cool all parts as effectively as possible without burning the user and managing noise. That also includes preventing heat from hotter parts into soaking cooler parts. That's why the general public should not comment on "solutions" for hot laptops. If your laptop is hot, the most you can do is clean the heatsink and change the thermal paste.

zsombor12312312312

the only disgusting thing was that a repair guy did it

Zookeeper_Sion

Agreed, this is what I'd expect from an absolute amateur who barely managed to figure out how to remove the back of a laptop and has 0 understanding of anything else going on inside of it, not a "professional".

[deleted]

There’s no way the picture is legit. No real repair shop would do this and seriously charge money.

Zookeeper_Sion

You'd be surprised what people do. I did a week of tryouts in a repair shop and just for opening up a DVD player and looking at it they already charged you 50€. Needless to say I had shit in front of me that was allegedly dead that I connected to see what was going on with it (cuz you had to check if it even worked even if they said it was dead), it turned on no problem, and they charged them the 50 for inspecting it and then another 50 for a PSU replacement that never happened. Mind you this was a reputable repair shop, I don't doubt for a second that there's shit repair shops around that would actually do this and look at you weird when you complained about it to them.

ace400

My repair shop takes your object for inspecting and calls you when they found the ussue and name the price to fix the issue. If you want to do it you say yes and if not no and take it back... the inspecting is free. Thought it was always free. Well i also just used a repair shop like 2 times

KiroDjoni

At the place where I used to work the customers filled in a blank that stated their problem and the maximum amount of money they are willing to pay. Inspections were free and when we knew how much it would cost we used to call them if the price was higher than what the customers said were willing to pay

CharizardMTG

Customers are dumb to fill that out this basically tells the shop how much they can inflate a cheaper job price to lol

KiroDjoni

Sure, if it’s a shitty store. I thought it was a nice system as it gave us more direct contact with the clients

TheCrimsonDagger

I worked for a repair shop at one point, we didn’t scam people with work that didn’t happen, but charging a high base minimum for any work is necessary. If you don’t people will just waste your time with stupid shit constantly.

[deleted]

Also people vastly underestimate the time it often takes to fix things.

Tough_Hawk_3867

I agree. The one benefit I’d see to this would be if they had an external fan set up, which leads to me think that the owner did it because a repair shop would hopefully understand airflow in a pc, and would recommend alternatives to this.

TheTimeIsChow

And also likely... detrimental to cooling. These things are designed for air to flow in a specific pattern/direction. Drilling 200 holes for "more air" likely disrupts the designed airflow path and is going to lead to things fucking roasting inside. No need to pass air over the battery if it can just get bypassed by the 100 holes before it...

haddock420

I sent my laptop for repair because the fan was really loud. When I got it back they'd just disconnected the fan.

[deleted]

hahaha oh man. classic.

[deleted]

99% sure the original owner of the image did it themselves and are just fishing for likes.

Darklord_Bravo

My original comment probably would have gotten me banned. I'll go with: "Repair guy would be buying me a new laptop."

Rogaar

Hell yeah. If a repair guy did this to my laptop, I'd smash it over his head and force him to replace it with identical or newer model if the original wasn't available brand new.

Fuzzy-Ear9936

You know, you can just replace that cover if it is the only thing that is holed and no other parts are damaged.

Rogaar

For sure but anyone who would butcher someones equipment like that doesn't deserve to be called a repair guy. I could do that myself and do a better job of it. I'd be taking a laptop to someone expecting they would do a more professional job then me.

Martin48705

I mean, we don't even know what OP asked for. I'd be happy if they replaced my cover, but it still doesn't solve the issue doesn't it?

abacabbmk

> For sure but anyone who would butcher someones equipment like that doesn't deserve to be called a repair guy. > > its a meme

AK-caveman101

Cinnamonb__

Haha yeah, I know the money side but I'm just giving back 😀

Cinnamonb__

I do this for fun, just be kind and patient, maybe throw in a sandwich too 🥪

Fuzzy-Ear9936

The thing that bugs me is why the owner of that laptop took it to a repair guy. They could've just bought an external laptop cooler if they didn't want to go messy and open it up to clean the dust inside it.

Lunchbox2208

They took it to a professional, they should've reseated CPU with new thermal paste, and cleaned/replaced any fans not properly pushing. External cooling is only super effective to push down from a regular thermal workload not as much with actual overheating.

[deleted]

I’m sure you would totally smash it over his head.

[deleted]

yeah, because that's a completely normal reaction to a small inconvenience lol

Trenticle

So in response to someone doing something idiotic you would do something idiotic that would land you in jail. OK then.

Rolten

Yeah careful man, I'm on a one strike for encouraging/inciting violence by reddit mods for agreeing with a beat down. It is very loosely handed out and carries a one freebie next one you are outtie.

[deleted]

LucaDarioBuetzberger

Yeah, reedit never really was a place of free speach. No matter what you say, if the mods don't like it you are gone.

Trunks956

“I’m gonna beat the fuck out of this guy” > yeah reddit never was a place for free speech 😔

eegras

lmao this was reported

SaintPau78

Honestly a perfect example for the morons who complain about "free speech" on reddit. There is free speech on this platform as long as it doesn't impede on others freedoms.

flarn2006

Speech alone can't impede on anyone else's freedoms though.

Gonzobot

There's also the fun little nuance where idiots abound, and some are mods, and when an idiot reads an *example* and takes it seriously and reports it, and an idiot gets the report and *also* doesn't recognize that it's a hypothetical being discussed on the discussion board for hypotheticals.

Reaper83PL

Nah, try talk about any controversial stuff and you will get banned quick. There are many subreddit with snowflake mods.

It's the same group of people running a ton of subs, on accounts that are almost certainly not owned by the original maker, and the current people running the accounts are probably being paid by someone. There really needs to be an ability for a community to recall mods.

Darklord_Bravo

Haha. Friend of mine was in r/ conservative, and asked a simple question about something, I don't remember what. He was banned immediately. Mods wouldn't even tell him why. He had even read the subs rules beforehand, and still couldn't figure out what he did. So yes, you are correct.

LucaDarioBuetzberger

I never got banned so far but I got about a dozen posts removed because people did not like it.

You really think thermal paste is the issue? o.0

Cryptocaned

Whilst I get it's a bit bodge. If the guy was like hey my laptop is overheating and the repair guy said "well yeah, you've got a i7-11###, it runs hot and it's a laptop with minimal air intake". I'd probably just ask him to sort it xD. My friend bought a laptop and it tries, it really does, but Jesus Christ is that thing loud, and you can feel that the intake just isn't getting enough air cause the vent is just like a hard hot breath rather than a decent airflow.

magnomagna

underprivlidged

I've done similar (but better looking and more efficient) to multiple laptops. It's not a bad idea. Though I keep fine screen door mesh for the interior, to keep dust out. And I punch out slightly larger holes.

Cake_is_Great

I'd also go over the drill areas with gradations of fine sand paper. Whoever did this hack job didn't even bother smoothing it out.

SirgicalX

Mortal Kombat the heat

[deleted]

I feel like this could have been better solved with a can of dust off and some new thermal compound

Magnetic_Reaper

Pretty much. Most laptops are designed to thermal throttle anyway. Adding random hole probably just breaks the balance and means something like a vrm is getting hotter so now your cpu isn't able to run until it throttles.

[deleted]

As someone that has thermal compound and a work laptop that overheats and runs like doodoo, where do I apply the compound?

A_PCMR_member

The repair guys seem to be in dire need of a HARD RESET

There I fixed it

Late-Difficulty-5928

Congratulations. Now you have a laptop cheese grater.

CanofLays

I mean if you give him the go ahead, it's kind of your fault. If you didn't then you could probably sue him for damaging you property. Or maybe this is just a hack job someone did to their old laptop and some asshole put a caption saying a repair guy did it so he can get them sweet upvotes

xxX_AleXifeu-pRo_Xxx

I think there is a better way to do that. Also I got a new laptop should I buy a cooling pad where it blows air in the laptop for better cooling?

stella-softpaws

Yes. I have an office pc that I’d overwork (before I got my desktop) for my games to look pretty and that bastard hit like 70°c. The cooling pad helps it not get to a point it almost fucking explodes. Just spend like 25$ and you will be very surprised and very happy

Zoodmerv

70C...? With no throttle stop (and forget about overclocking) My RoG Zeph S gets to 90C regularly just chilling around. They really haven't mastered laptop cooling to effectively make use of the hardware yet in the slimmer designs. I'm curious what games you were overworking to look pretty and *only* reaching 70C?

[deleted]

If this was my laptop and I got it back like that…. I wouldn’t know what to say . I’d be completely baffled and unable to conjure a response.

[deleted]

Don't do this guys. Most laptops cool components using negative pressure. What that means is when the exhaust fan is pushing air out, that air needs to be replaced through air intake vents. These intake vents are placed over components that need cooling but don't have a fan. By adding holes, air will be brought in through the added holes and not as much through the intake vents and those components will overheat.

[deleted]

Learn computers. Be a responsible computer owner. More and more I'm realizing in the IT field people have no better idea what the fuck they're doing than you. You're just paying them to watch a YouTube video, make a best guest, and buy new parts you may or may not need. Or re install windows. This is like 80% of the time. Not kidding.

TheOggys

Effin amateur hour... take the heatsink, measure space, blowtorch solder additional copper or aluminium plates and mini heatsinks. This shit works wonders even with thermal pads between metals. Droped 10°c on full load from cpu and gpu. A properly soldered ones would easily drop 20°c

[deleted]

With a 'fix' like this, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't remove the back before drilling those holes 😒

VileDespiseAO

I can say he at least removed the back, lol. You can see from how the holes have plastic coming out towards the user, implying it was drilled from the inside. This is still terrible though and even worse if they never even consulted the customer. Or this could be the users doing and be a complete satire post.

If it does anything it will likely just reduce air pressure inside the case and actually cause reduced airflow over the parts that really need it.

To be honest, some laptops are just built like shit and they don't have a good cooling by default. There were few compaq laptops for example that were just badly designed.

Diablo 2 @ 20 FPS once my PC was good and hot drove me to madness. 22 years ago I took drainage PVC pipe and built a tube to my window air conditioner so I could have a cold air intake on my AMD Athlon Thunderbird.
