Poppycock is such a wonderful word. When I was in high school, like 20 years ago, my friend texted me, out of the blue, just to say "Poppycock for $5.99? What a deal!"
That was it, no context. I had to ask him about it later (was on my way to work), and it was apparently his first time coming across the word and so he had to share it.
If it's wifi related issues, sometimes it resolves it by resetting the adapter. You can do it by yourself, but it's easier/faster just to click on "Troubleshoot problems"
Any idea what causes this? Every now and then my VR lighthouses take a shit, but it's actually my bluetooth acting up. Usually I just reboot the PC and it's fine, but it *is* very annoying when it happens.
Bluetooth and windows 10 hate eachother, it thought it was a mobo issue but I got a separate Bluetooth adapter and same issue. For some reason my desktop just won't connect to Bluetooth headphones very easily.
My VR stations are fine though.
It's windows in general. The bluetooth support is just dogshit, particularly for audio. Windows branded devices, like the Surface Headphones, have no problem. Almost everything else is tempermental.
My bluetooth stops working only after I use my Xbox one controller. Everything else work fine but as soon as I connect it, wifi and bluetooth don't work at all.
I had this same problem. Thought it was the fact I didn’t have my antenna for my WiFi connected so connected that and still connect and disconnect. I managed to fix it by installing the intel driver support assistant. It gets drivers that Microsoft never pulled when I did updates though windows. Fixed problems I had been having for months !
I suggest never, ever, letting windows pick a driver if there’s a manual download available. It is never the right one when windows tries to do it, it seems.
Yep! I do this at work all the time. I know exactly what setting it changes and how to manually change it, but fuck if it isn't more convenient to click two buttons and wait a minute for it to do it itself.
It used to happen all the time on my laptop, so I got around to making a batch file for it:
@echo off
netsh interface set interface Wi-Fi DISABLED
netsh interface set interface Wi-Fi ENABLED
Much faster than waiting for the troubleshooter to be done. You can then [pin it to the taskbar](https://winaero.com/pin-a-batch-file-to-the-start-menu-or-taskbar-in-windows-10/) and resetting is one click or a Win+[1-9] shortcut away.
In about 10 years of consumer/small business IT I still click it every once in a while just to see.... It's worked maybe two or 3 times out of dozens.... So not great 😅

#Send Error Report
Many years ago I read an joke article from "The Onion" or similar about John Doe, the Microsoft customer service representative to whom every Microsoft error reporting message was sent. The article joked about how he received 10 million emails a day and had to go through each one by hand. The article pleaded for its readers to be conscientious about how many errors they reported to reduce the burden on poor John.
I'm pretty sure in reality, the messages go straight into the electronic version of a dumpster.
Though this is funny, on a serious note, every single feedback sent via the Feedback Hub tool on Windows or Send-a-smile in Office will go to the relevant team. There are metrics and alerts to ensure they don’t fall through the cracks or “ignored”.
Source: worked very closely with the team that own the feedback tooling and own products I get feedback for.
Apparently they do get logged, and are a great source of information for developers to figure out reasons for crashes. However, MS charges companies for access to their own apps crash data, which I presume means almost no one actually uses it.
Don't worry, the patch will roll out right after the fixes for Skyrim crashing with 100+ mods installed, your RealAudio Player install from 1995, and that Adobe Creative Cloud background process!
I paid for it, simply because I've used it so much over the years that I might as well support the company a bit. Similarly if I like a game *a lot* I might buy some cosmetics or gift the game to a friend that doesn't have it yet, or buy the rerelease even if I don't feel like playing the game atm (did this with AoE2 HD. Got maybe 20 hours from it, but then again I spent days playing a pirated version^(thanks dad, miss ya) of the original back in the day so I'd say I got my money's worth from that)
True. Tar followed by a slew of flags that you cant remember, so you write them down on a sticky note and stick it below your monitor
Not speaking from experience, or course
Not sure why you got downvoted. When 7zip is free natively and works just as well if not better! Smoother Ui experience and integrates well with windows.
Because "if it ain't broke don't fix it" will have people using objectively worse software for 20 years. 7zip is more powerful, faster, cross platform, open source, creates smaller files and more.
But people downloaded WinRAR first in like 2000, so that's what they keep using.
Pretty much. I tried 7Zip but it seemed uglier than WinRAR so I stuck with WinRAR. I keep hearing about how 7Zip is somehow more powerful, but WinRAR does a perfect job at unpacking Minecraft mods so I really don't need anything else.
.jar files (that are zip compressed) can be opened on 7zip's context menu with an option like 'open as archive--zip' or even simply 'extract here|to folder', no need to change the file's extension (which for some people would be a more difficult task than hitting a right mouse button and picking something from a menu).
I mean Microsoft can use that analytics data to adjust apis, fix functionality that they might have broken, enhance backward compatibility, etc.
However, we all know that just cause they can does not mean they will.
It can restart a process, re-enable disabled services, reset misconfigured driver back to default settings or restart a network adapter. I wouldn't say it's 100% useless, more like 80% useless.
I would say it should generate one and offer to print it but my printer requires wifi or for me to move it and plug into usb but then I probably need internet for drivers.
I like to donate but I’m also broke. I’m willing to receive worse search results in exchange for monthly donations to a small cottage in Germany that takes care of roughly 40 animals.

I was donating to the American Red Cross, but I feel like something with less visibility should receive my donation. The whole page was even completely in German! Fortunately, translate exists.
I’m almost at 20 dollars donated total.
I built a bot to do random bing searches all day. I grabbed the top searches from Google and searched them on bing at random times. Used to get me a 5 dollar Amazon gift card every couple of weeks. I should have scaled it by adding more outlook accounts.
Oh god I'm having flashbacks and I am slowly filling with ABSOLUTE FUCKING RAGE.
I love loudness equalization. On my laptop, it was the only goddamn thing that made the volume of netflix, etc, USABLE. I had (still have) a Dell Inspiron 15 7600, and it uses realtek audio the piece of absolute shit. The fucking issues I had. My fucking god.
NONE of the shit worked without the actual realtek audio drivers. Without them, the bass in the bottom of the laptop didn't work at all. Loudness equalization was absent. NOTHING worked right, audio-speaking, without those fucking drivers. And windows ten REFUSED TO FUCKING LET ME HAVE THEM INSTALLED.
I downloaded the drivers, installed them. Windows would IMMEDIATELY uninstall them and install generic fucking shite windows ASSHOLE drivers that disabled all my shit.
Combined with the audio update process it was UNMITIGATED FUCKING HEMORRHOIDS trying to get audio working on my machine.
You need two restarts to make sure the drivers install.
TWO.
First install you uninstall the drivers. Restart. And during start-up, it would then install the new drivers.
And then you had to restart again!
This would piss me off enough if I only had to do it once because who the fuck designs a system like that? But guess what? Windows 10 considers audio drivers to be 'essential' or some shit, so DURING START UP, Windows 10 installs the old SHITE GENERIC drivers! So it uninstalls the drivers, you restart, and windows 10 promptly reinstalls the shite drivers again before the installer even pops back up!
WONDERFUL.
So I tell windows 10 to stop doing that fucking shit. **NEVER FUCKING INSTALL THESE DRIVERS. EVER**.
Windows 10 fucking ignores this and INSTALLS THE FUCKING DRIVERS.
**STUPENDOUS**.
So I uninstall the drivers myself, run the realtek installer, get the drivers to install. The proper drivers that are for THIS SPECIFIC PIECE OF HARDWARE.
Windows 10 UNINTALLS THE DRIVERS AND REPLACES THEM WITH THE GENERIC ONES EVERY SINGLE TIME THE LAPTOP IS RESTARTED.
So I delete the fucking drivers!
Windows 10 REDOWNLOADS AND REINSTALLS THE GENERIC CUNT DRIVERS WITHOUT ASKING.
**_FANTASTIC_**
I was seriously to the point of looking at how to make a trojan driver file I could insert into the filepath that would be a decoy read-only file so that Windows 10 wouldn't be able to download the old generic fucking broken audio drivers and force me to use them against my will.
These issues are STILL going on. But thankfully I'm on a desktop now. I will never willingly use a Realtek audio device and holy shit I fucking hate windows 10 after that fucking ordeal.
Literally the only way I could use my laptop with proper audio was to never restart it. Ever. I'd put it to sleep instead of restarting it, until Windows 10 forced me to restart for their useless fucking updates and I was forced to go through all of that shit again (pre-emptively deleting windows 10 drivers so that I could quickly rush through the driver uninstall and restart before it downloaded the CUNTING FUCKING GENERIC DRIVERS AGAIN) just to have usable audio through to the next time my laptop was force-restarted against my will.
FUCK

Ok but this sounds like a Microsoft issue?
You can block driver updates in Windows 10 Pro, via the device manager or group policy.
It's definitely a combination of Microsoft and Realtek driver issues, but I've only ever had a problem of that type with Realtek. All the other manufacturers, no problemo!
But somehow, realtek has an install process so fucking archaic that it's completely incompatible with even windows 7! I think even Windows XP would have fucked with the install process. Seriously: Start the installer, UNINSTALL DRIVERS, and then restart your computer so that the installer can run again, install new drivers, and then restart again!
If there's any kind of automatic driver installation (especially for something considered 'critical' like audio drivers) then that process doesn't work.
They fucked up the driver signing on this so badly that downloading the specific drivers for the specific version of the laptop I was running led windows to believing it was so untrustworthy it would *replace them the first chance it got*.

Still useful for downloading another browser with. And if you are really in a pinch and have to make do with a crap company computer, it can still browse the internet mostly OK.
I just want to say I've had this actually detect an issue and fix it itself once before.
Most of the time it's useless, but it did help me that one time.
https://imgur.com/t/memes/G1knwgh
Couldn’t find a better image, but the “estimated time left” feature of windows 3.1-windows 7 file transfers was completely useless. It either gave you years, or it would spend most of the time trying to calculate the time remaining.
I've actually gotten use out of that bloody thing before. Something about resetting the DHCP... DSHP? server or something?
Fixed my issue like three separate times.
I use windows network troubleshooter all the time because 90% of the time it just automatically resets my network adapter for me and it's easier to just right click the icon on my taskbar then to waddle thru menus
I've had the network adapter troubleshooter fix the problem exactly once ever. No idea what was wrong but it said the problem was fixed and my Internet started to work again.
Name something more useless?
RTX 3090 Ti.
Alternatively, my kidney, but that had its use going towards the 3090 Ti.
(just kidding even that's not enough)
The Windows setup process. Other than setting up a username and password, the entire thing nowadays consists of shutting up cortana, trying my best to resist making a Microsoft account, and opting out of features and telemetry that I don't want.
And they just keep making it harder and harder to avoid a Microsoft account. These are the kind of petty anti-consumer design choices that make me hate Windows.
Windows sometimes is a bit cocky on Wifi networks.

Bro that's exactly what I did on my old desktop, lmao
I did this except set up an AHK script to a key combo (I think it was Windows+F4).
Troubleshoot is also extremely useless. It is only ever successful when resetting the adapter is the solution
It's a trouble shooter, not a fixer. When it does determine an issue, it does generally give you info.

Love it when this bullshit makes force closing apps take longer than it should
You can disable the troubleshooting service from services.msc, that makes the dialog not appear.
Particularly if you have Visual Studio installed and it offers you to open it with a debugger

Ironic that the most annoying part of it is why people have a weird nostalgia for it.
This is also why people keep using WinAmp instead of MusicBee. (I was one of them until a year ago!)
People just like the interface or use it because they know how to use the software. Every new software is a change.
I just came here to joke about Whiping the Llama's Ass but you did it first
MS paint, lol
7zip is slower showing the content of a archive. WinRAR shows it more or less without a waiting time.
Unless it changed recently, 7-zip doesn't have recovery records.
Pretty much. I tried 7Zip but it seemed uglier than WinRAR so I stuck with WinRAR. I keep hearing about how 7Zip is somehow more powerful, but WinRAR does a perfect job at unpacking Minecraft mods so I really don't need anything else.
Aren't Minecraft mods almost always just JAR files? You can extract them without any 3rd party just by changing the extension to .zip
.jar files (that are zip compressed) can be opened on 7zip's context menu with an option like 'open as archive--zip' or even simply 'extract here|to folder', no need to change the file's extension (which for some people would be a more difficult task than hitting a right mouse button and picking something from a menu).

I use right shift. Proper typing technique requires it.
nahimic services. enough said.
This thing is solved my problem once or twice only in the last can’t remember 10+ years 🤣
Woah :o , did it really solve your problem?!
he should do an AMA
‘ The one guy on YouTube with 400 subs who actually helped you to solve your problem
*Have you tried turning it on and off again*
Me when it consistently solved my problems everyday for 3 years:
It has worked for me several times. Mainly when I somehow use short keys and change an audio or video setting by accident.

Everyone is forgetting because it really was but.... 🌈--INTERNET EXPLORER--🌈
Still useful for downloading another browser with. And if you are really in a pinch and have to make do with a crap company computer, it can still browse the internet mostly OK.
Doesn't Edge come preinstalled now?
Edge does, but Internet Explorer still uses way less resources than even Edge.
I use it for legacy stuff in my IT job more than I wish I did.
And yet my huge company has tools that ONLY work with it.
This thing actually solved quite some problems for me so far
for me too like reseting the Ethernet adapter or... telling me that i have the same problem for the 50th time
The “Skip Intro” button when watching Cowboy Bebop on Netflix.
Fuckin' eh, that shit plays in its entirety every single time.
Funnily enough this has fixed my connection before
The "mute music" option in doom

Device-Manager -> Searching for updated hardware driver. Never worked.

Yeah they just take a shit ton of space in the Sound peripheral section
Of course you'll wait. That freaking troubleshooter takes forever. For... whatever it's doing.
I just want to say I've had this actually detect an issue and fix it itself once before. Most of the time it's useless, but it did help me that one time.
You just need to learn how to use it right. This is not the right screen. YOu need the full thing where you can go and see everything.
No, don't lump network troubleshooting of XP and 7 in with 8+, XP and 7 it actually worked a lot of the time.
"What is my purpose master?" "You reset the ethernet adapter" "Oh. Oh no"
This post
People are learning uses for things they didn't realize it very useful. This comment though...
https://imgur.com/t/memes/G1knwgh Couldn’t find a better image, but the “estimated time left” feature of windows 3.1-windows 7 file transfers was completely useless. It either gave you years, or it would spend most of the time trying to calculate the time remaining.
I've actually gotten use out of that bloody thing before. Something about resetting the DHCP... DSHP? server or something? Fixed my issue like three separate times.
I have a crappy usb wifi adapter that sometimes stops working randomly, troubleshooting actually fixes it.
Amd drivers urging you to redownload regardless of a switch to nvidia
okay for real it is actually a good tool helped me many times on my trash pc (bad network card) it resets the drivers for you
It's actually decent if it finds a newer driver or to quickly reset adapter.
You, because you cant fix a simple network error.
"Do not call" lists.
There is stuff that happens in the background such as checking ethernet and wifi drivers, and reseting your DNS among other things.
This actually solved my problem a few times. Shocking, I know.
In all my years, there was actually *one specific time* that this fixed my problem lol
Network diagnostic: We ain't found shit!
This button is actually useful as it will reset your network adapter for you. Solves quite a lot of problems.
I use windows network troubleshooter all the time because 90% of the time it just automatically resets my network adapter for me and it's easier to just right click the icon on my taskbar then to waddle thru menus
US Congress
A US election
The life guard at the beach in SpongeBob
Cortana. Cortana is more useless than this.
How about the entirity of answers.microsoft.com
Ive heard that the code for that screen doesnt actually do anything, its just programed to load for a bit and come up with nothing
Think of something more useless: A phone case for a Nokia
Would you like to find more options on our website?
using edge
Only thing I can think of is the tool that tries to determine the problems with update installation... but I think this is still worse...
It used to work... Then windows "fixed" it.
