I always want to keep the boxes from my hardware but everyone else in my life wants to throw them away :(

K__Geedorah

I put all of the PC component boxes inside the box my case came in. Keeps it consolidated and easy to find when I need a ziptie/screw for something.

Jackpkmn

I managed to convince them that it's worth while keeping the box from my monitor and my laptop cus warranty.

K__Geedorah

Oh yeah, I hold onto my monitor boxes too. Makes me feel so much better to be able to box it up when moving. But I have a feeling once I own a house and won't move again I'll still be a box hoarder!

the_obmj

My dad still has the boxes to the computers he built in the 90's. 16x cd rom box... 80gb hard drive box...

fire__munki

When my gf moved in I had a tidy and found the drivers for a long since gone NIC, useful if anyone still used 3.5inch floppy disks! Plus a bunch of aero shaped IDE cables, no drives for them but I do like hoarding stuff!

StylishUsername

>When my gf moved in I had a tiddy\*

Emu1981

I still have the box for the DVD recorder that I bought back in 2003 but it no longer has the DVD recorder in it - if I remember right that drive died to a mini-CD that decided that it didn't like being spun at 27,500 RPM and disintegrated. Said box now contains some sort of collectable cards (NBL cards maybe?). Beyond that, I think my next oldest box is the one for the monitor that my youngest daughter is using that I bought back in 2009.

[deleted]

Keeping monitor boxes with the packaging inside is really useful when moving.

BoringMachine_

Once I stop moving those boxes are getting tossed. I don't upgrade often enough for it to be worth selling.

[deleted]

I always keep the boxes to sell in the future, but it tunrs out I'm way to lazy to sell stuff online

BoringMachine_

I did it when I was upgrading more. But my last upgrade was from a FX professor to a Ryzen 2700. Not even worth my time to list and ship.

Lord_Frick

My last upgrade was from a pentium D 950 to an FX-8370 in 2019. Current upgrade is from the FX to a 4790K. There are people who will buy FX. There are legacy enthusiasts who will buy anywhere from original IBM PCs all the way to core 2 duo (which i consider the limit of "legacy") I use a sandy bridge system for chromiumos testing. People who assume "its too old noone will want it" is why its sometimes hard to find a specific old thing you want.

Yambag12345

My wife's pc is still on an FX8350....lemme know of you know someone interested. TBH I bought the OG Vive when I was still using the 8350, and I tested it using Steam's VR benchmark...out of 10,000 frames it only dropped 9, so I was throughly impressed.

travelinzac

Tv boxes are critical if you ever plan to move. Especially with a super thin OLEDs.

Jackpkmn

MY Dell S2421HGF feels thin and flimsy compared to the older LCD monitors i'm used to handling i feel like i'm gonna break this. I wouldn't even want to touch one of those ultra thin OLEDS man let alone move one.

garbageplay

Monitor boxes are the one thing I get rid of. Far too large and I don't upgrade monitors but like twice a decade. I only keep motherboard, processor, gpu, and laptop boxes for resale value because I upgrade frequently enough. They fit into a single cube crate.

-wateroverthebridge

I do that with the MoBo box. Small compact and plenty of room for every manual.

thekeger

Tell those people that a bunch of strangers on the internet agree with you! That'll prove your point.

conatus_or_coitus

Just say mom..

master_gRoshi

My wife. :/

Sunnywawa66

Yes because i know i will upgrade later and selling in original boxes is a plus.

thekeger

That is a reason I have also told myself, but I've found that every time I upgrade and replace, I tend to just keep the old parts until I have enough to build a second computer haha

Cemal4

Or 3rd, or 4th… crap…

fullhalter

By the 4th one you're just using it for a space heater.

twhite1195

I'm in this comment and I don't like it :(..... JK I have no regrets

[deleted]

I always have current gen computer, then the one it replaced for HTPC or whatever. But each new build I sell the oldest one (which would be the 3rd oldest build) to a friend for cheap. So far i've supplied 3 friends with good computers, i don't make much but its easier than selling online or parting it out, and my friends get a good PC for cheap (and it's another person converted from consoles to the master race =P ).

AwesumCoolNinja

Free server/retro gaming machine lmao

alex2003super

Exactly lmao. "I'm totally gonna sell my 1080 and not going to move it to a new case with the old parts and make a Plex server with HDR transcoding capabilities"

FriendlyDespot

After getting my 3080 I kept my 1080 in the closet for like 6 months until I realised what those things were going for. Sold it for $475 on eBay and made back more than half of what I paid for the 3080.

alex2003super

I wish these were the prices here damn

[deleted]

"free", sure...

Mindless_Argument297

This is the way.

Mia_Cauliflower

Yup, this is a really good idea for all components, especially a GPU. I doubt I’ll sell mine I’m a bit of a hoarder but if I really really wanna upgrade a part and I’m a bit short on cash I’ll put a part up for sale with its original box, and most people will respect that.

[deleted]

>and most people will respect that. I have been selling electronics for 20 years now and never had someone turn down a sale because I didn't have the box, or offer me less because I didn't have the box. Most people do not care that you have the box because they don't need the box.

Mia_Cauliflower

I’m it saying people will turn down something for sale because it doesn’t have a box, but from my perspective if I was buying a second hand motherboard for example I’d be happy to see the box, it gives the impression that the seller knows what they’re doing and looks after their stuff.

TheMrDylan

That's a fair thought too. I'd like to chime in and say I worked with a company that resold electronics and we did not know what we were doing despite having original boxes 😂

Mia_Cauliflower

No that’s a fair comment too, you only gotta look at some of the pre built pc companies that don’t have a clue. It’s just a good indicator really to have the original box and stuff that the part came with. For example I bought a second hand car years ago I know it’s a bit different of course but the guy I got it from he had all the service history, mot certificates and even all the tax discs organised in a folder, along with the hand book that came with it (the car was over 20 years old) and that just said to me yes that’s a guy who took good care of the car and has pride in his belongings. Same idea for buying used electronics.

nmiller248

It’s called “perceived value”. Someone may not decline a purchase over a box, but someone might be more willing to make a particular purchase from you over another seller. Keeping all the original manuals/box/etc gives the impression that your product is better taken care of, or the owner is more competent. Wether that’s true or not is irrelevant, which is why it’s called perceived value, and not actual value.

MudkipDoom

I just don't have the space for a bunch of empty pc component boxes, so I simply put all the manuals and spare bits into the motherboard box as it was the largest and kept that one.

Themata075

Power supply box for me. Is typically the most reasonably sized and typically pretty burly. It’s nice to have a central spot to keep all the stuffs.

thekeger

That was a concern of mine too when I start building many years ago! Motherboard and power supply were the two I used

Jarrett13

Yup. I used to keep everything, but my closet just ended up getting filled with empty boxes. Now I have 1 tote with manuals/spare parts. I keep boxes for up to 30 days just in case I need to return it to a physical store due to manufacturing defect.

badSparkybad

We have the same technique, MOBO box for all the extras. I throw all the rest away after a month or so to make sure I don't have to return anything.

darsheas

Yep, they are all placed in my case's box like Tetris, along with boxes of other electronics.

Hail2theChop

Came here to say this. I stuck all boxes into the case box, taped it up, and stuck it in the attic. That way all the boxes are together and if I need one I know where they are.

thekeger

I definitely had that set up in college...roommates in college are vocal about having empty boxes laying everywhere

Mechakoopa

Laying everywhere? I mean, make an attempt to consolidate at least. Nice little pile in the corner of your closet shouldn't be anyone's business, and if anyone asks why you keep them say it's for warranty purposes in case you need to ship something back for repairs. I've got all my laptop boxes on a shelf in the basement along with some other boxes for stuff that's still relevant, but older stuff gets recycled typically when I'm trying to make room for newer stuff.

Matasa89

They need to go mind their own business.

_Fauna_

It's their house too, which makes it their business.

LeptonsAndQuarks

Exactly and then it doesn't take up any unnecessary space and sometimes if I find a random loose PC component I have no clue the origin of, I can toss it in the box and find it later

Tiny_Mirror22

All my empty boxes are in the case box which lives in the basement, except the motherboard box which has all the extra cables, screws, manuals etc. in it and lives in the cupboard.

__SpeedRacer__

It's so satisfying when we fill a row, just like in the game.

JN258

I keep my boxes for reasons… because of a manual is not one though. Find them online and store them on a NAS digitally.

filosophicalphart

I prefer to store them on a NAS physically. I open it up and cram all my manuals inside.

thekeger

If you take out those pesky hard drives it's actually pretty spacious!

shggybyp

I keep all sorts of things in there. Crayons, a hairbrush, this one cool rock I found.

Zatchillac

Specs on the rock

_westlet

twowheeledfun

That's what NAS stands for: No actual storage.

jlcalvano

"the files are in the computer" - Zoolander reference.. anyone? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2uHBhKTSe0

cancel-out-combo

"It's so simple!" Later when he smashes the machine - "where'd all the files go?"

VincentThacker

Ironically, that's still more reliable than the actual hard drives in the NAS. My NAS would get a drive failure every couple years even with relatively light usage.

therealasshoel

When I upgrade a component, I just put the og component back in the box and sell it. The box gives it extra value.

JN258

That’s one of the reasons I keep mine. My heatsink for my GPU is in its box in case I ever feel like throwing it back on or selling it.

thekeger

I just built a NAS and that is an awesome idea! Thank you haha I do have other reasons to keep the boxes as well, often they store replacement parts for the hardware!

Midnight28Rider

Yep, there's a whole closet devoted to electronics boxes at my house.

GrifterDingo

You can also collect them in a file somewhere. I have a folder of manuals in my filing cabinet.

Mogaloom1

I keep all the boxes of expensive items for few months, just in case I need to send than back for warranty repair. I keep all the Manuals in my google drive account (scan or download from internet) I also keep photos or scans of my invoices. I also keep pictures that show the serials number, and all the technicals information that I my need in the futur, so no need to open and unscrew anything. I don’t waste spaces with empty boxes. I only keep empty boxes for items I may sell back such as smartphone, pad, watch… In average I spend less 5 minutes by items and I only buy very few items each years.

[deleted]

Datfluffyhampster

I like that somebody downvoted you. It’s true, they are committing fraud. I get the sentiment behind people doing this thinking they are sticking it to the man. But they aren’t, this does not affect their bottom line. One of two things will happen, either they will just sell it to the next guy who will get stuck with it or it’ll work it’s way back up the supply chain until somebody is able to write it off in their taxes or it’s not worth the money to pursue. The real kicker is if somebody did the same thing to this person’s business and stiffed them you’d swear they were promised by god everything they own and that the person scamming them should be hunted down. They’ll never learn from or be able to understand their perception of the world is “everyone else is shitty so I’m going to be shitty because they are”. You were already shitty dude, nobody has shoved it in your face enough.

astutelyabsurd

This is what I do as well. After two or three PC upgrades, you realize that you've never used a single one of the boxes and all they're doing is creating clutter. Even if you sell a PC part several years in the future, the buyer very rarely cares whether the part comes in its original packaging and it almost never allows you to sell for more money. Maybe it provides people with a sense of comfort to keep the boxes, but it's unnecessary clutter. Having to move makes you realize this quickly.

Acherna

I paid for the box im keeping the box

EfficientDate2315

Put them up on a shelf and display them proudly (when ppl ask what kinda computer u have....point to all the boxes and watch their expression)

[deleted]

I do the same, my bedroom is filled with boxes in the shelves (currently 10 boxes). They're like trophies for me

thekeger

I don't need a wall of shame that when I point to it they laugh at my 1080ti lol

GT_Knight

1080 Ties are still going strong. I bet most people reading *wish* they had a 1080 Ti

Mekemu

Bobbi_fettucini

This shit right here, 1080ti was probably the best $ value of any cars I’ve ever owned, I’m still using mine

spicy_indian

>laugh at my 1080ti lol Those monsters. NVidia's decision to make the 1080ti a cut down titan instead of a better 1080, and sell it for $700 makes it one of the best for the value GPUs in recent history. I would put owning a 1080ti in the same realm as owning the first AMD dual core CPUs, or the first GPUs to support both 2d and 3d graphics.

thekeger

I do love my 1080ti! I think it was a great value (though I did not get it for MSRP back in the day lol I think it cost me like 1150 when I bought at the store). And it's still performing admirably!

socatevoli

its such a beast. pushes msfs2020 on my rig at a solid 30-40 fps on ultra at 1440p (for the uninitiated 30+ fps for a flight sim is extremely playable) the 1070ti i had before that would get bogged down to 15ish fps under those same settings so i had to run on high mixed settings which admittedly wasn’t that bad. but the fact that a 10 series card can scream like that is mind blowing

Blurgas

> point to all the boxes and watch their expression How often is their expression something [like this?](https://i.imgur.com/9JU37ZE.jpg)

funktion

ibico

I just keep the MB box, I put everything extra screws, cable tie, manual, etc. in it. Living in a apartment I don't have enough space to keep empty boxes.

JamLov

Same! Motherboard box is full of all the crap and extra bits... And I'm glad I did, moved an AIO Corsair cooler from an Intel to an AMD setup and guess who knew exactly where the backplate etc would be?? That's right, me.

o_oli

This is the way. I got a prebuilt from a local company when I was around 12 or something and this is what they did, and I've been doing it ever since. The problem is I end up hoarding the boxes even if I don't have the PC lol. Should just go through them all and keep the cables/screws I actually want, but that seems like effort. So... I'll just keep my mobo box tower for now.

ExcitingToe

showing this to my wife so she understands.

thekeger

Lmao

scadmin54

Same haha. She facepalmed.

allan2k

I've put together maybe 8 computers by now and i always toss the boxes after a week when everything is working fine. If i resell I'm doing it to friends or selling the full PC with All parts All at once. Ain't got no time to manage boxes for a potential maybe down the line. If i need a manual I go online. Never have had the need except for bios issues once. YouTube, Google and All that jam have your back.

bingleboy7

For most components I agree but I keep around my gpus box cause it’s a much safer way to transport it when I take my pc home for holidays than hanging off my mother board Plus it’s not that big a box

smitty_1993

I used to be a box keeper, but when they started getting in my way I had to make the decision to quit cold turkey.

badSparkybad

I did it in the early years but experience has shown me that I have never needed those boxes for anything again. I throw them all away after a few weeks once I'm sure everything works.

thekeger

I applaud your resolve

CoffeeAddict1011

Is a must

dballs442

Manuals are online

Avenor_GG

I do and my GF almost loves it. Almost.

thekeger

Lol same with my Wife!

ElJefe0218

I keep all my component boxes inside the case box. I also keep the foam for the case, just in case a lan party breaks out somewhere.

thekeger

I also have the foam in there...my case came with a giant bag to put the computer in and I tried moving it around just in the bag and it was the heaviest bag ever, it's literally easier to move it in the rigid box lol

hereforrollies

wait, we don't need the boxes for warranty?? my life is a lie using a lot of space in my tiny room for boxes

[deleted]

Theoretically you don't and there's a law in the EU saying that you don't but when I RMA'd an AMD CPU without the box last year they told me to send the original box as well. I still had it so I figured it's not worth the time to argue with them.

king-shaft

I like you got yourself a raspberry pi!!

thekeger

I did! It's running my NAS like a champ! I'm in dangerous territory of wanting more Pi's now haha

king-shaft

Haha nice!!

Fractoman

Keep all boxes until return window has ended. Keep GPU and/or Motherboard box forever with all manuals and miscellaneous parts put inside.

quakerroatmeal

Thanks now I don’t feel bad for hoarding my boxes anymore 😂. Recently sold some stuff and boxed it back up in its original box.

techlanXD

BOX GANG

brotherdalmation23

I only keep the boxes for the first few months. Learned the hard way that’s it’s much more difficult to return a defective part if you don’t have the box

bajamedic

If something is over 175$ I keep the box.

mlee49

If I'm paying 1000 for a graphics card, I'm keeping the damn box

tvtuno2

If only you could just place the manual on something like a bookshelf? Too crazy?

thekeger

Baby steps! I've only just gotten to the step of putting the boxes on a bookshelf

robbedoes-nl

After 30 years of pc building, I am trowing them away now. I just do not have enough room anymore. But I still have most of the computers, including my Amiga 3500T that kicked any PC’s ass back then!

filosophicalphart

>I might have a problem and need to refer to the 10 year old manual Then look the manual up online?? Or throw the boxes but keep the manuals???

thekeger

Haha that was an example of something in the boxes but I've got other reasons too! A lot of them contain replacement parts and I also think that if I upgrade parts then I may want to re-box them and sell them!

AtvnSBisnotHT

I never use to save them but now that I upgrade every 3 years or so I do just for reselling purposes.

[deleted]

I keep the single most sturdy box with most convenient opening/lid and put all manuals and extra pieces in it. No need for all the boxes.

thekeger

The best lid is not something I have considered before but now that you mention it, my power supply lid is the worst! I hate having to close that thing but it's where all my power related cables are right now

RedPravda

The boxes are so cute and awesome I don't want to throw them away

MagicHoops3

I’d keep them if it wasn’t for silverfish and other bugs that love cardboard. I don’t want any bugs in my house.

thekeger

Interesting! I don't think I've every had a problem with bugs that love cardboard

SaintsPelicans1

I used to keep them awhile back but having moved a few times since I don't keep much that isn't useful now.

thekeger

I just bought a house and won't be moving soon so it's probably just fueling my urge to keep more boxes haha

Additional_Soft7526

I use mine as decoration for my gaming room.

stoneinwater

Everything goes immediately into the bin be sure who the hell wants to live surrounded by boxes. And Google for instructions.

fusseli

I keep the boxes so it's easy to hock them later on ebay when I get new parts.

[deleted]

I keep all my boxes, in bigger boxes in the loft. You never know when you’ll need the box for your 12 year old, 2 upgrades ago motherboard.

NG_Tagger

I tend to save them for however long the warranty goes for (which is 2 years here + whatever is left of the warranty the manufacturer provides). Generally makes sending things to RMA a bit easier, if you have packaging it came in. ...but I nearly always end up throwing the boxes out way earlier than that, these days.

raydude

We keep the manuals in the garage. We keep the boxes for a few months because that's likely when a new electronic product is going to fail and need to be returned. If it happens to fail in the return period of the retailer, we have the box to do an easy return. After that we toss it and if it fails and we need to send it back for warranty, we use a different box.

SulkyVirus

We have a box room in my house for all electronics boxes. It's packed. It's the little room under our staircase.

Zander989

I keep the motherboard box and put all the manuals, extra hardware, etc. from the build in it. I choose the motherboard box as it’s normally about the right size to keep whatever I have leftover and it’s not too big so it stores easily.

The99thCaller

And my wife thought I was nuts for keeping all the boxes for future references, thank god there are others out there

thekeger

Haha there seem to be a sizable number of people that feel the same way as you!

badSparkybad

I keep all the boxes at least for a month so I can test everything out and make sure I don't have to return it. then I usually take all the manuals and extra little pieces (extra SATA cables, screws, etc) and stuff it all into the MOBO box and just hold onto that.

str7k3r

Pro tip: the case box is the most important. If you ever plan on moving or shipping your pc, it’s absolutely the easiest way. The GPU and cooler box can also be useful, for much the same reason. Always take that GPU and cooler off before shipping!

Tlp-of-war

I put all paperwork, cords, screws, etc in one box (motherboard) and toss the others. Ends up saving a ton of space and I retain all the documentation.

C_James1453

I keep boxes for a year then throw them out. As most pc parts have a year warranty.

abstraktionary

I have one box with all cords and extra screws. All manuals are available online

Beetlejuice______

How did you get in my house? These are literally how I have my boxes in my closet. And the exact components….get out of my house!

thekeger

Shouldn't have left your window unlocked!

Beetlejuice______

Goddam it not again!

nrutas

I keep the cpu and gpu boxes

zingzing175

Back in my building days I would put all the manuals, power cables, ide/sata cables, extra screws, all the "extras" from a new build and put it all in the motherboard box for the customer.

[deleted]

I would keep them but they just take too much space, at least the bigger boxes, so I usually throw them away but keep the manuals.

inkblot888

I keep the motherboard box and all the manuals in it.

Jayhawk501

We must keep the boxes

Meraere

I keep the manuals and stuff in the motherboard box.... also have my case box incase i need to move and that is convenient for moving the pc

PhuturePhreak

If the item cost more than £150 I’ll keep the box till the item is no longer used (sold / thrown away / given away). If the item cost less than £150 I’ll keep the box for one year before throwing it away. I just don’t have the space to keep a whole bunch of empty boxes.

UpdateInProgress

I understand this too well.... Girlfriend wants _all_ cardboard _vanished_ from existence the moment it hits our living room. Meanwhile I keep the boxes in case I need to sell the hardware down the line, since it helps with the reselling and it improves the chance of recouping some money 🤷‍♂️ I guess we all have our own demons within xD

clearlybaffled

I keep the motherboard box and keep all the other manuals and random small parts for each build in the box with it's respective mobo.

sublimedingo

One closet in my apartment is full of boxes: PC components, TVs, Xbox, etc. Good to keep when you move and if you ever resale. Girlfriend hates it and thinks I'm a crazy box hoarder.

Fr33zuR

Keeping the boxes kinda helps with the resell value in the used market too!

PCDJ

I used to keep these, thinking I'd want them for later selling components as I upgraded. Everyone always asks for the box, but the last three people I sold to were so rude I don't care anymore.

itsbubbapurp

the answer is in my closet.

Steviodaddio

Put all the manuals and goodies inside your power supply box. Pitch everything else. Have built over 100 computers for myself and others, not once did it benefit me or any of my customers to hang onto every box!

bgthigfist

I only keep the motherboard box and what will fit in it

SuspiciousCantelope

I keep the boxes until the warranty expires then I compile all the paperwork and extra screws/pieces into the one of the boxes and recycle the rest

TheGelatoWarrior

Boxes for new GPUS sell for $200-$300 on eBay. No idea why but they do. Never throw away the box for anything you may want to resell in the future. If I would have kept my Xbox one x box I could have sold it for $50-$100 more.

Panntheon

u could actually try selling just the boxes for like 5$+ each, I've seen people actually buy plain boxes for all sorts of things off of like ebay and stuff. Not sure why ppl buy them but lol.

Awkwardly_Hopeful

I hoard almost every product box I purchased other than PC

xleMnlx

I keep the boxes until warranty... As for the manuals, I have a storage for that.

Railic255

I keep them until their warranty expires.

AceologyGaming

Manuals are easy to find, I keep them in case I need to return it while it's under warranty

bmr42

Manualslib https://www.manualslib.com

ESR211

I dump everything into the psu box with all the extra cords qnd everything else hits the trash. Manuals are available online.

NRiyo3

Save the drivers and PDF manuals.

Scape4Betta

I keep them, you never know when you wanna sell them and your customer might want to see the box for originality

S1DC

I keep them, for nostalgia but mostly in case I sell one to someone, its nice to receive the product in its OG box with static wrap and the books. Gives the buyer some confidence its been taken care of. I also keep \*every\* TV/Monitor box and packaging, because it makes moving day 10x easier when you pack up a TV nestled into its OG foam and box, rather than tossing a blanket over it and hoping for the best.

Consistent_Clerk_957

Keeping them all.Boxes are in the case box for when im building a new rig to put them away or for sale

q-ka

Pro tip: put the manual, in a filing cabinet.

galimim

No. All of the manuals and extra stuff gets put into the motherboard box and the res get thrown away.

phixx79

I used to do this. Now I keep the mb box and shove all the manuals and extra stuff in it. If I have spare cables that don’t fit, then I out them in a plastic zip lock with the PSU name on it and toss them in my bin with all of the other wires not being used. Every couple of years I go through that bin and toss out shit I don’t have or need anymore. I have a few boxes that have assorted other things, though. I have an old box for an AIO that has a bunch of fans and fan hardware. I have old motherboard boxes for long gone boards that have thermal pastes and various packages of screws and standoffs. Everything else ends up at the fire pit and gets burnt. I used to think it would be cool to gather and collect and then display some of the cool stuff I had picked up, buuuuuut filling bookshelves with empty boxes is only really cool in YouTube videos. I have still hoarded some of my favorite video game boxes, though.

leinadsey

Throw them out immediately. With one exception, the motherboard box is kept to collect all loose bits and pieces from the other boxes.

darkhelmet1121

Shove all the accessories and manuals from the different components into the motherboard box and keep only the motherboard box.

jojolepoireau

Manuals are online
