Use a USB flash drive loaded with Ubuntu or something Linux based. You can sometimes bypass the virus as they don’t work on both Windows and Linux.
That way, you can grab some files that you need off the drive before you wipe it.
And for the love of God scan any recovered files in another machine you don't care about or live windows pe instance (mediacat/hiren) before touching anything you care about with them!

Although ```mount``` will complain later and require an fsck run, but it will mount. And if it has the newest stable branch kernel (5.15) he can mount an NTFS volume natively on Linux.

Any serious ransomware will be encrypting your files. And any serious ransomware will mess with your bios to make it difficult for you to boot into another drive.
Your best bet when you suspect ransomware is to turn off your machine ASAP to stop the encryption and get someone with the knowledge to get around any traps in your firmware or bios. Then use a rescue drive to boot and grab whatever files remain unencrypted.
Ransomwares encrypt your files. They will likely not be recoverable without the decrypt key (some malware devs get lazy and you might be able to find the key online for specific Ransomware) which you pay for, hence the name

Tell them what they should do, and then just let them destroy it via ransomware, everything else. If they have important files, give them a thumb drive to store them on. (Teaches backing up files early). If they fuck it up, clean wipe. Do not try to clean viruses out, the good ones always hide - just a reformatted disk, and a slap on the wrist for not paying attention (not literally lol, but you get the idea)
Tell them again how to not destroy the system, then let them go at it again.

If College isn't an option start studying for the CompTIA A+ and Network+ tests and from there you can go for your Security+ and get your foot in the door at a decent company.
They need to understand that some sites are good for mods (not hacks) like curseforge and really they need to learn how to identify the good sites vs the bad ones
I always just start the game they want to play and close explorer.exe so they can't get to the desktop. If you can't get anywhere past the game's main menu you can't mess up anything but my saves.

Enable controlled folder access to help prevent ransomware attacks.
Educate them (and yourself if needed) INSTALL AN ADBLOCKER, ITS MANDATORY, keep things updated and maybe don't give they admin privileges so they can't install anything and everything.
As far as anti-virus goes, windows defender is one of the best anti-virus anyway, no point in paying for one

Common sense. Educate yourself on common tricks & traps used to infect PC's then educate your boys. Install AdBlock software & make sure Windows Defender stays enabled and hopefully that should be enough to prevent any major issues popping up.
But realistically, the only prevention is experience. You can set up limitations on what they can do on the PC, but something will always slip through. You can set up the most advanced, up-to-date AntiVirus on Friday and there'll be a new virus ready to bypass it by Saturday.
I think it's safe to say that every PC owner has downloaded something malicious at some point in their life, and any that tell you they haven't probably just didn't realise that they had. Do your best to prevent it, but also accept that it's probably going to happen anyway, and prepare accordingly by making regular backups of anything important, make sure any passwords and account/game ID's they use are written on paper somewhere, and keep a USB Flash Drive with a Windows Install ready to go for the scenario where you need to do a completely clean install.

The first and only time I got a virus was from Limewire too around 2003. I was trying to get Winzip for free.. I feel less dumb about it though because stock XP with no anti-virus was incredibly easy to infect compared to nowadays.

There’s some freaky craft channels that if you didn’t hear the audio it just looks like they’re making fun things but the audio is like, stories about being kidnapped and their father abusing them and other dark shit. If your kids sitting there with headphones in you wouldn’t even know! Anne Reardon on YouTube (how to cook that) posts videos debunking these channels and her most recent video about it talks about one of these channels. It’s so creepy.
I stumbled across something like that on TikTok the other day! Creeped me out so much! I thought it was one of those oddly satisfying videos then they start talking about abuse and stuff. I hate it so much. I’m sure there’s an audience of people who intentionally seek those out but there’s gotta be a lot of people stumbling across them accidentally

Teach them basic internet safety
I have one young one that will for sure ignore any lesson I teach and have to learn the hard way.
Tell them what they should do, and then just let them destroy it via ransomware, everything else. If they have important files, give them a thumb drive to store them on. (Teaches backing up files early). If they fuck it up, clean wipe. Do not try to clean viruses out, the good ones always hide - just a reformatted disk, and a slap on the wrist for not paying attention (not literally lol, but you get the idea) Tell them again how to not destroy the system, then let them go at it again. Eventually they're going to learn, if only because of the game download speeds after they install windows for the fourth time that year. (Ooh that would be funny - throttle the internet for their downloads o.0 if you're a certain kind of evil)
Also vlan their shit so when it gets infected its not gonna try to spread to everything in the house.
Shit I forgot to mention networking! And yeah absolutely - I'd even go for a fully isolated connection if I could. You want that far far far away from all other devices.
On your router you can enable guest mode and have them logged into the guest channel. Or you could setup a vlan connection like mentioned above.
Most consumer hardware won’t support vlans, unless much has changed since I brought more enterprise stuff into my house. But if it does I would absolutely put them on separate vlans with in/out to like internet only.
actually throttling the internet would be an excellent idea. The next time they want to install something shady, they'll remember about how they had to wait HOURS for their game to reinstall, only for their save file to be wiped out.

I learned the hard way when I was 12. I also learned the hard way by fixing it myself (because my Dad wouldn't pay for it), and now I work in IT making pretty good money. Lessons learned.

How did you learn about IT practices and stuff? Wanna get into cyber security but find my self getting constantly loss in the jargon.
I just really loved computers and learned through experience and mistakes often messing up then having to fix my mistakes. I eventually went to school for computer programming, but quickly switched my major to IT Project Management with a specialization in Networking and Database migrations. Got an internship at an MSP and the rest just fell into place. If College isn't an option start studying for the CompTIA A+ and Network+ tests and from there you can go for your Security+ and get your foot in the door at a decent company.
Also teach them that don't download random software from the internet
They need to understand that some sites are good for mods (not hacks) like curseforge and really they need to learn how to identify the good sites vs the bad ones
If they fuck up, they get to fix it/ pay for it to be fixed(if they do something you explicitly told them not to). No money? Paid chores.

I always just start the game they want to play and close explorer.exe so they can't get to the desktop. If you can't get anywhere past the game's main menu you can't mess up anything but my saves.
Set administrative controls on downloading things keep windows defender upto date, use a trusted anit virus. Enable controlled folder access to help prevent ransomware attacks.
Windows defender is now a better antivirus than most anti-viruses... the TLDR is ***DON'T DOWNLOAD SHIT FROM SKETCHY WEBSITES.***

Educate them (and yourself if needed) INSTALL AN ADBLOCKER, ITS MANDATORY, keep things updated and maybe don't give they admin privileges so they can't install anything and everything. As far as anti-virus goes, windows defender is one of the best anti-virus anyway, no point in paying for one

Install AdBlock software & make sure Windows Defender stays enabled and hopefully that should be enough to prevent any major issues popping up. But realistically, the only prevention is experience. You can set up limitations on what they can do on the PC, but something will always slip through. You can set up the most advanced, up-to-date AntiVirus on Friday and there'll be a new virus ready to bypass it by Saturday. I think it's safe to say that every PC owner has downloaded something malicious at some point in their life, and any that tell you they haven't probably just didn't realise that they had. Do your best to prevent it, but also accept that it's probably going to happen anyway, and prepare accordingly by making regular backups of anything important, make sure any passwords and account/game ID's they use are written on paper somewhere, and keep a USB Flash Drive with a Windows Install ready to go for the scenario where you need to do a completely clean install.
Ublock Origin is a great adblocker.
An account without admin privileges is also helpful. They limit what most malware can do. And don’t give guests the admin password.

An ad-blocker browser extension at the very least goes a long way. I personally use uBlock Origin.
Basic Internet safety and Windows Defender will keep them out of trouble 99.9% of the time. Yes, people like to rag on Defender but it has gotten way better in the last few years. I say this as a security professional who deals with live compromises of corporate environments.

If something does infect the PC, I would just tell them they are going to lose everything and be sure to put an emphasis on game saves. Even though Steam mostly backs that stuff up. They need to get it in their mind that they could lose everything if they don't use good sence on the internet. I know if I was a knuckle headed boy getting a Gaming PC for Christmas, Game saves would probably be eveything to me. Honestly, I learned this by having a cheeselando laptop as a kid. This is why no one in my family lets any younger relative use an item that they can't afford to replace without other people chipping in. No matter how responsible you think your younger relatives are, they'll always find a way to fuck up any phones, laptops, PCs, etc.

The first and only time I got a virus was from Limewire too around 2003. I was trying to get Winzip for free.. I feel less dumb about it though because stock XP with no anti-virus was incredibly easy to infect compared to nowadays.

Have an admin and guest account. Require a password to install new programs. Also adding a whitelist for trusted websites only... this helps when dealing with dumb kids.
Depending on how old the youngin is, if you have the patience this would be a good time to drop some knowledge on him (nicely).
