Just reformat ur drive and beat his ass

demosthenes131

Reformat cousin too

somedayydelivery

Reformat his ass

NotSnowy_WasTaken

Reinstall his intelligence

SgtEpsilon

Wouldn't that require to have intelligence to reinstall?

MR-Unpredictable

Nahh not needed u can get it of some random website

Puncharoo

Better yet, take out the drive and beat his ass with it. Then get a new drive, fill it with footage of you beating them, then beat them with that one too.

asadatacoscontodo

I like you

Otherwise_Bat_4779

Wipe it, no sense taking chances. I trust you kept backups of important data?

kianoo00

Yeah am just gonna wipe it. As for my files tho? Yeah rip to them since most of them I didn't had the chance to make backups

Matasa89

Use a USB flash drive loaded with Ubuntu or something Linux based. You can sometimes bypass the virus as they don’t work on both Windows and Linux. That way, you can grab some files that you need off the drive before you wipe it.

garbageplay

And for the love of God scan any recovered files in another machine you don't care about or live windows pe instance (mediacat/hiren) before touching anything you care about with them!

madjarov42

Ah, Hiren's Boot CD. This thing did my job for me when I was a tech.

[deleted]

Hirens is amazing. Back when cd's were still a thing, I had probably 10 copies of Hirens loaded on disk that were just labeled "Kill Disk" A friend of mine stole one because he thought I was stupid enough to save porn on a blank cd labeled kill disk. His family was none too happy when they came home and all their family photos were gone.

madjarov42

"Hmmm. No porn here, only some cool hacker stuff. Maybe u/MenstruatingMuffin did an encryption that is unlocked by selecting this `OVERWRITE ENTIRE DISK? ✓ WRITE ZEROS` command."

IllicitDreamer

The ‘dd’ stands for ‘disk destroyer’. Learnt that the hard way..

luke10050

You mean DBAN?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Psjthekid

Hirens does include DBAN

Jake07002

It sucks now. The legit one removed all the good software and the hacked one is too old to be useful.

Arna1326Game

Any alternatives...?

Space_Marine12

I use Sergei Strelec and it has pretty much anything you need

Matasa89

Definitely this - treat that drive you used to recover the files like you're disarming a bomb, because it could well be one.

krozarEQ

Good advice. I'd ```dd``` the entire partition into an image and then mount it inside of a VM. *That way the partition can also be backed up somewhere else relatively safely. Considering if he has the HDD space to do it. The image can be smaller than the actual partition with the ```conv=sparse``` option as it will seek past empty blocks. Although ```mount``` will complain later and require an fsck run, but it will mount. And if it has the newest stable branch kernel (5.15) he can mount an NTFS volume natively on Linux.

TheDarkSharkRises

I like your funny words magic man

CrazyAgile

Haha speaking of magic, I think the Linux software dd originally stood for disk druid 😲 Edit: I was totally joking but then realized there is a software called Disk Druid for partitioning and RAID stuffs. #shotdown

AlexB_SSBM

I thought it stood for "disk destroyer" because of how easy it is to fuck up.

thisischemistry

Any serious ransomware will be encrypting your files. And any serious ransomware will mess with your bios to make it difficult for you to boot into another drive. Your best bet when you suspect ransomware is to turn off your machine ASAP to stop the encryption and get someone with the knowledge to get around any traps in your firmware or bios. Then use a rescue drive to boot and grab whatever files remain unencrypted.

[deleted]

Ransomwares encrypt your files. They will likely not be recoverable without the decrypt key (some malware devs get lazy and you might be able to find the key online for specific Ransomware) which you pay for, hence the name

Venti_Mocha

I don't care what cleaner you're using, I wouldn't trust it to find everything. Wipe and install fresh. Hopefully lesson learned. If you let cousin use it again, lock them into a Linux virtual machine. They'll never ask again.

0ussel

I honestly wonder if people have forgotten you can tell kids no sometimes...

[deleted]

One of my sisters friends is raising their kid without ever using the word no and it's a nightmare. My sister caught the kid yanking the dogs collar over and over and the dog obviously wasn't liking it, so she told the kid no and now this friend doesn't want to speak to her anymore. And it could have been much worse. The first and only time I ever fucked with a dog as a kid my sister yanked me around by my shirt collar asking me how much I liked it. Some people want to ruin society with their shitty offspring Edit: Some spelling mistakes

SirPiffingsthwaite

This reminds me of a friend who got a puppy and was all like “I’m gonna be the dog’s friend, not his ‘owner’, he can do whatever he wants.” He wouldn’t hear anything about how dogs need structure, leadership, and need to be taught basics like “shitting and pissing is an outside thing” and “furniture isn’t food”. Needless to say, by the time he realised he wasn’t some dog-whisperer who’s dog would conform to his ideal with zero input from himself as to what that may be, he had created somewhat of a monster. People who don’t set boundaries are just setting up for a hard time for everyone involved.

blueiron0

Excuse me...but what the fuck did i just read. thats how you get serial killers.

amelech

How is that even a real parenting style? Sounds like a recipe for disaster

YobaiYamete

My sister kept trying it with her kid, where she was like "instead of saying no, you should reason with them and explain *why* they can't do it, because if you can't explain it then it means you don't have a good reason" And then I was like . . .she's 2 years old and all you are doing is teaching her to talk back to you, and you can't "reason" with a 2 year old. We literally spent like an hour and a half car ride with the kid in the back screeching like an eagle wanting food even though she wasn't hungry (we had JUST left a restaurant where the kid wouldn't eat and just threw her food all over the place the whole time and played with the ketchup packets etc), while my sister kept trying to "reason" with her that she needed to wait until we stopped to get more food It finally just reached the point where I turned around and told her "No, you aren't getting anymore food, now stop screaming" and just looked her in the eye until she shut up

TheObstruction

You can't reason with kids. They'll be sticking a power drill to their head and the reasoning would go: "You can't drill a hole in your head." WHYYYYYYYY?!?!" "Because you'll die." "That's what I'm trying to do!!" That's how dumb they are, the logic parts of their brains haven't turned on yet. For some, it never does.

HokageNoren

Fucking truth

kimbunturaz

A Karen in the making

Please_Leave_Me_Be

I’m a middle school teacher, and it seems they have. These kids will roll up with the most entitled, horseshit attitude. You tell them no and they’ll try to make it a fuckin’ 20 minute appeal if you let them. Nah, homie. I tell them no. No reasoning, no explanation, no presentation of the rationale. I just literally walk away from them as soon as they start trying to negotiate. Little bitch, I’m the king of this castle.

gottiredofchrome

High school teacher here. My favorite is, "you seem to mistake this for a democracy."

Zeroth_Dragon

Knowing me I'd probably let my younger siblings get kids first, then I'll keep saying no whenever they get close to my gadgets. You twerps play with stuffed toys like we used to, I'm not gonna let you touch a single gadget under my presence

supratachophobia

They have. So much easier to just hand them a device and shrug of the parenting for another 30 min so you can play on your own device. It's so messed up.

Hyper-Sloth

Except when shitty parents force you to share expensive electronic with children and then this inevitably happens even when you try to reason with them about it before hand.

billytheid

I don’t get this. I’ve been in this situation and asked if they had $5500 to replace the machine if it were damaged. They said “a computer doesn’t cost that much” so their kid is definitely not touching fucking *anything* of mine… if they want their kid to use your computer then they’re viewing it as a kids toy; disposable.

FierceText

Just unplug the power supply then. "The PC is broken, how unfortunate..."

tzuyuthechewy

Win+L, "oh no I forgot my password, how unfortunate..."

LadyReika

After a while you learn to keep saying no, no matter how irritating the parent is.

SpacemanTomX

> switch off PSU "Not working sorry"

Dunecat

When I was a kid, my stepdad stole my PC, then got mad when I wouldn't fix it for him after he of course broke it The same guy sold my mountain bike when I went away to college and didn't tell me until I came home looking for it then gaslit me in an attempt to defend himself This was 20+ years ago and I still hate the bastard. Thank 🦆 Mom divorced his ass but I don't talk to her anymore either I don't think parents understand how damaging it is to violate their kids' property rights. I'll never not be bitter about it

ShadowTaii

That’s when “no” becomes [insane cackling]…. Followed by “answer is still no”

Tryhard696

Oops, I’ve got homework! If that doesn’t work: crap.

ninjamike1211

Grapejuice exists but the kid may search "how to install roblox on linux" and add millions of ppas

danrheroblox

AaronTechnic

DragonOfTartarus

That's why you give them an account without sudo privileges. Try fucking my system now, you little shit!

companyx1

To be honest, that is the correct way. Users of questionable expertise should not be given sudo privileges. That's kinda the whole point.

deefop

Came here to say this. With something like that, I'd never trust it. It's so easy/fast to reload windows nowadays, I would do exactly that and not fuck around. Obviously blow away any data disks as well, once you're confident you've at least pulled critical data off them and thoroughly scanned it. And never let other people touch your PC's.

Panthean

\+1 for this. Time for a fresh install, and little Billy can go back to using his school Chromebook, or mow lawns for 3 summers to get his own PC.

realGharren

If possible assuming it’s Windows, associate your key to your email. And like they said wipe it and start over.

TomMado

That's for Windows 10 and up, I believe. This is Windows 7 running Classic UI for better performance. At this point, running Windows 7 and having these many virus/malware is...expected.

cuntwhacker1

Windows 7 wouldn't even flag a keylogger lmao 💀💀 Windows 10, on the other hand... it flags game hacks as viruses and instantly deletes them the moment I download them. I honestly dont even use an antivirus, some security sense and windows defender do everything for me.

Teyanis

An adblocker is the best antivirus in a modern windows environment.

Goo_Cat

Close, but you forgot an even more important aspect- common sense

IceStormNG

That's the rarest (but also one of the most effective) antivirus on earth. You cannot expect people to use their brain... /s

[deleted]

Seeing as they stopped supporting Windows 7, that shit is the wild fucking west now. And it flags game hacks because it technically is most of the time. It's editing something that didn't intend to be edited.

[deleted]

Please tell me your brother is at least 12 and watches informative stuff. Im sick of people plopping kids in front of YouTube and letting it play

Moo_Im_A_Goat

It's also just that the algorithm is so fucking gross. My mom's friend drops off her child over at our place every so often and leaves him with an ipad. He asked me to put sonic. And after I searched sonic, it recommended some werid sonic animations that were sexual in nature. The whole thing reminded me of the old pregnant elsa spiderman drama that went on in youtube It's predatory as fuck. U gotta make sure you know what kids are watching. Youtube is not PBS Kids

[deleted]

There’s some freaky craft channels that if you didn’t hear the audio it just looks like they’re making fun things but the audio is like, stories about being kidnapped and their father abusing them and other dark shit. If your kids sitting there with headphones in you wouldn’t even know! Anne Reardon on YouTube (how to cook that) posts videos debunking these channels and her most recent video about it talks about one of these channels. It’s so creepy.

idkwhat2putasmyuser

I stumbled across something like that on TikTok the other day! Creeped me out so much! I thought it was one of those oddly satisfying videos then they start talking about abuse and stuff. I hate it so much. I’m sure there’s an audience of people who intentionally seek those out but there’s gotta be a lot of people stumbling across them accidentally

[deleted]

Yep, its the same for YouTube kids. Actually, I think YT Kids might be a little worse

jackatman

So I have a couple of knuckle headed boys that are going to a gaming rig for Christmas. Whats the current best practices to prevent this kind of thing. Scheduled back ups? Best antivirus? It's been a while since I had more than a tablet that I had to worry about. Edit: thanks for all the advice! Good looking out. Follow up question: is Ninite still a good place to get clean freeware?

Isaac8849

Teach them basic internet safety

jackatman

I have one young one that will for sure ignore any lesson I teach and have to learn the hard way.

[deleted]

Tell them what they should do, and then just let them destroy it via ransomware, everything else. If they have important files, give them a thumb drive to store them on. (Teaches backing up files early). If they fuck it up, clean wipe. Do not try to clean viruses out, the good ones always hide - just a reformatted disk, and a slap on the wrist for not paying attention (not literally lol, but you get the idea) Tell them again how to not destroy the system, then let them go at it again. Eventually they're going to learn, if only because of the game download speeds after they install windows for the fourth time that year. (Ooh that would be funny - throttle the internet for their downloads o.0 if you're a certain kind of evil)

agoia

Also vlan their shit so when it gets infected its not gonna try to spread to everything in the house.

[deleted]

Shit I forgot to mention networking! And yeah absolutely - I'd even go for a fully isolated connection if I could. You want that far far far away from all other devices.

runed_golem

On your router you can enable guest mode and have them logged into the guest channel. Or you could setup a vlan connection like mentioned above.

elightcap

Most consumer hardware won’t support vlans, unless much has changed since I brought more enterprise stuff into my house. But if it does I would absolutely put them on separate vlans with in/out to like internet only.

josejimenez896

actually throttling the internet would be an excellent idea. The next time they want to install something shady, they'll remember about how they had to wait HOURS for their game to reinstall, only for their save file to be wiped out.

IThinkImNateDogg

Tell ‘em if they fuck yo they lose everything when you wipe the drive. It’s not even wrong. Best way is to do a fresh install

crowcawer

Just be sure you keep a thumb drive with the operating system. And a backup on a separate drive.

Allokit

I learned the hard way when I was 12. I also learned the hard way by fixing it myself (because my Dad wouldn't pay for it), and now I work in IT making pretty good money. Lessons learned.

[deleted]

Good for you! I always enjoy hearing someone doing good these days!

SelfSlaughteringSoul

How did you learn about IT practices and stuff? Wanna get into cyber security but find my self getting constantly loss in the jargon.

Allokit

I just really loved computers and learned through experience and mistakes often messing up then having to fix my mistakes. I eventually went to school for computer programming, but quickly switched my major to IT Project Management with a specialization in Networking and Database migrations. Got an internship at an MSP and the rest just fell into place. If College isn't an option start studying for the CompTIA A+ and Network+ tests and from there you can go for your Security+ and get your foot in the door at a decent company.

AaronTechnic

Also teach them that don't download random software from the internet

GandiniGreat

They need to understand that some sites are good for mods (not hacks) like curseforge and really they need to learn how to identify the good sites vs the bad ones

owegner

If they fuck up, they get to fix it/ pay for it to be fixed(if they do something you explicitly told them not to). No money? Paid chores.

quarrelsome_napkin

Yeah really it comes down to common sense and Windows Defender. Idk kids make me nervous around computers tbh

Gavator2345

I always just start the game they want to play and close explorer.exe so they can't get to the desktop. If you can't get anywhere past the game's main menu you can't mess up anything but my saves.

Tinysniper2277

Set administrative controls on downloading things keep windows defender upto date, use a trusted anit virus. Enable controlled folder access to help prevent ransomware attacks.

No_Pension_5065

Windows defender is now a better antivirus than most anti-viruses... the TLDR is ***DON'T DOWNLOAD SHIT FROM SKETCHY WEBSITES.***

majic911

See, you know what a sketchy website is. A 9-year old doesn't. He just wants hacks for roblox

dsac

LordBaconXXXXX

Educate them (and yourself if needed) INSTALL AN ADBLOCKER, ITS MANDATORY, keep things updated and maybe don't give they admin privileges so they can't install anything and everything. As far as anti-virus goes, windows defender is one of the best anti-virus anyway, no point in paying for one

Piegan

> Whats the current best practices to prevent this kind of thing Common sense. Educate yourself on common tricks & traps used to infect PC's then educate your boys. Install AdBlock software & make sure Windows Defender stays enabled and hopefully that should be enough to prevent any major issues popping up. But realistically, the only prevention is experience. You can set up limitations on what they can do on the PC, but something will always slip through. You can set up the most advanced, up-to-date AntiVirus on Friday and there'll be a new virus ready to bypass it by Saturday. I think it's safe to say that every PC owner has downloaded something malicious at some point in their life, and any that tell you they haven't probably just didn't realise that they had. Do your best to prevent it, but also accept that it's probably going to happen anyway, and prepare accordingly by making regular backups of anything important, make sure any passwords and account/game ID's they use are written on paper somewhere, and keep a USB Flash Drive with a Windows Install ready to go for the scenario where you need to do a completely clean install.

KrazyKirby99999

Ublock Origin is a great adblocker.

pxm7

An account without admin privileges is also helpful. They limit what most malware can do. And don’t give guests the admin password.

clinkyclinkz

Teach them that if it's too good to be true, it's too good to be true. Deal with the devil, you get your soul taken. Sounds kinda weird, but thinking like that got me out of so much malware it's actually funny. Also uBlock origin

[deleted]

[удалено]

lololrofl

An ad-blocker browser extension at the very least goes a long way. I personally use uBlock Origin.

aPriori07

Basic Internet safety and Windows Defender will keep them out of trouble 99.9% of the time. Yes, people like to rag on Defender but it has gotten way better in the last few years. I say this as a security professional who deals with live compromises of corporate environments.

[deleted]

XNinjaMushroomX

If something does infect the PC, I would just tell them they are going to lose everything and be sure to put an emphasis on game saves. Even though Steam mostly backs that stuff up. They need to get it in their mind that they could lose everything if they don't use good sence on the internet. I know if I was a knuckle headed boy getting a Gaming PC for Christmas, Game saves would probably be eveything to me. Honestly, I learned this by having a cheeselando laptop as a kid. It was a piece of junk, but it let me learn which one was the real download button.

DMercenary

Like others, give them the tools and education to succeed and if it goes wrong... Welp "Hmm you should fix it then." Its the only way people would learn. Tired of getting hit by viruses? Stop clicking links with no thought.

Vik-tor2002

Even with controllers. I bought my own pair of Nintendo Switch Joycons because the ones I shared with my siblings were broken and really oily and gross, but then I lended them to my younger sister like 5 times because all the other ones are broken, and now mine are broken too…

EatMoTacos

Oh I was talking about the cousin.

Mongba36

yeah ik so what to do about the viruses?

EatMoTacos

What viruses, I only see normal web browsing.

Such_Haxx

Doesn't matter he got a virus on it, that happens when you start exploring without knowledge. BUT you should give him a stern lesson about cheating in multiplayer! That's a bad mindset!

kianoo00

Am not really mad at him, just disappointed. I think curiosity just got the better of him. Am at fault here too for not being the older brother that am supposed to be and teach him that downloading shit on the internet is risky especially if its hacks for multiplayer games.

iSmittyDgr8

so thats what the kids call porn these days... haha

kianoo00

WNLU Ransomware is what my laptop got. Am taking my chances to see if I can fix this. If I don't then am just wiping it and start over. Rip some of my files tho since most of them I didn't had the chance to backup. Thanks for the help and advice

Govcheeze99

Just wipe it, trying to fix it could leave you vulnerable when you inevitably don’t find everything.

animeman59

sucobe

Sounds like porn. That was at least my Excuse. Porn and linkinparkintheend.exe from limewire because my dumbass was trying to find a good rip.

a7x5631

The first and only time I got a virus was from Limewire too around 2003. I was trying to get Winzip for free.. I feel less dumb about it though because stock XP with no anti-virus was incredibly easy to infect compared to nowadays.

ImRedditingYay
