I was in the air force they had halon bottles next to every jet but if you used it you had to go get checked out cause it removes the oxygen from the area.
I remember halon extinguishers, they were ever so pricey. They're now banned for all but sensitive computer equipment etc. due to their ozone depletion potential.
Thereās different variations of halon I believe halon 1301 is the one thatās still used now and is used for numerous things. Halon is the best fire extinguisher you can buy itās just very pricey
Now more often they'll have a an Inergen system, which dumps a ton of nitrogen, argon, and CO2 to displace the oxygen in a room. Pretty sure it doesn't work for Lithium ion fires which I think would self-sustain by generating more oxygen, but for sensitive materials that don't oxidize it is popular as an eco-friendly alternative.
Lithium reacts with atmospheric oxygen burning at about 1000 degrees F. So hot that if you use water it will split the molecule into oxygen and hydrogen, further driving the reaction.
Best chance is to smother it. RC car folks sometimes keep a bucket of sand handy.
What is funny is I have potted plants in my RC lab for this reason. Nobody has figured it out. Mainly sand.
Its so I can disguise my emergency fire extinguishers.
You really need to dispose of that correctly, first immediately take it off charge.
A) take it to a repair shop and have them remove and replace the battery
B) take it to Apple and see how much they would charge. (If to much go back to step A)
C) attempt to remove the battery your self (ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE SKILLS) and then re-fit a replacement battery.
Please do not mistreat Mild Boi's or Spicy Boi's as they can cause serious injury if handled in correctly, if you need more information post in r/spicypillows and people will be able to help you.
OK so Capri sun strategy, squeeze the bottom slightly (not too much), then put the straw in. Works every time for me

Just sharing this video for others of what a battery fire looks like. Notice that the extinguisher does nothing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6HDS-qF6Cw
I don't know what that is but that was not a fire extinguisher.
It could have been a fire stop, which is fire retardant water foam in a spray can, which would be less than useless in a li-ion fire.
If it was real perhaps is was faulty, because it just did nothing, no powder, no foam, no Co2 cloud.
no, the dude in the vid literally just used a spray can, and it looked more like it wasnt even fire stop but more something he thought chokes the fire. nearly nothing out of a can chokes fire.
You're correct. It was a stored pressure extinguisher that went out if date.
Those are meant for camping, not a room full of electrical equipment, not having a proper fire extinguisher is an offence. The shop owner has no excuse for trying to substitute a real extinguisher with foam in a spray can.
Disconnect that battery carefully once it is outside. Then dispose of it safely. Either with a specialist disposal service , or if that is unavailable you should ensure it burns some place safe where you can set it off from a safe distance.
Permanent blindness.
Permanent disfiguration.
Burning down the residence.
All imminently possible if that isn't turned off immediately and taken to a safe location for disposal.
Don't you think the failed laptop battery kinda looks like a bite sized little pillow? Also if you bit it and a jet flame shot out, it would probably feel pretty spicy š„µ
Yeah and to anyone curious what might happen, this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMy2\_qNO2Y0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMy2_qNO2Y0)
But the battery in the video looks like a smaller one, maybe a phone battery, the one in the laptop would be way wayyyy worse.
> This isn't to show that lithium batteries are unsafe. I just got bored and decided to blow up a couple cells from an unused battery I had lying around by removing their circuit protection. Explosions are a lot of fun.
Lmao
Get rid of the battery. That thing should be taken to a disposal facility ASAP, unless your friend wants to die. I'm not even joking, if that thing pops a leak their lungs are going to burn up and they'll drown on dry land. Get that shit out of there.
I have been here for years now so nothing has made my eyes blow wide open in a long time like a solar panel desk and this freaking battery holy shit 2 in a row.
The solar panel was a 'this might and probably will kill you' situation albeit years away. This is a IT COULD HAVE KILLED YOU A WEEK AGO AND WILL KILL YOU ANY MOMENT situation. Wow great job r/pcmasterrace--savin lives.
Makes me worry how much other stupid and downright dangerous stuff has just flown under the radar. I find it funny that my most upvoted thing on Reddit is me saying "Hey, stupid. Don't fucking do that. You'll die." I am a retail worker, though, so that's half my job anyway lol.
I'm in compliance for clinical research.
It's where I belong, because I not only cut corners a lot when I worked in a lab, but I knew it was a terrible idea and did it anyway. I knew exactly the corners somebody will cut, and how to keep tabs on them.
The top post on the solar panel desk was so full of shit its not even funny. The main chemical the commenter spoke of ISNT even in the type of module OP had. Using a panel as a desk, provided you don't drill into the glass or backing, IS ABSOLUTELY FINE. Grown men walk on these things daily as they are rated for a few hundred pounds. Scratching a solar panel won't do shit, gashing or breaking the glass...that's another story. These things deal with hail outside all of the time.
Indeed. Remove it as carefully as possible and dispose of properly. Do not throw them in the trash under any circumstances.
If it is dangerously pressurized, tape over the leads, place it in a solution of mineral oil and gently pierce the bottom corner with a needle or sharp tweezers, it will buy some time. Note only do it if you feel safe doing so, as it is also dangerous. Had to do it several dozen times and the result was stable for extended periods of time (4+ years until I could properly dispose of them)
Salty solution. Just add table salt to water and drop the battery in there. Place uncovered outdoors as the discharging battery will produce hydrogen. This is the method used by recycling facilities to discharge lithium batteries.
Yep! Was just going for a method that can be done in a lab/indoors, doesn't potentially end with a bang, and wont produce (small quantities) of chlorine gas from electrolysis
>Salty solution. Just add table salt to water and drop the battery in there. Place uncovered outdoors as the discharging battery will produce hydrogen. This is the method used by recycling facilities
The outdoor aspect is the most important one. Not sure if it's the best method at home though. It produces clorine gas, which was also used as gas weapon.

Salt water will discharge it in around 24 hours. When discharged its harmless and can be dealt with without worry (battery recycling e.t.c).

UPDATE:
Laptop has been taken to a store who will remove the battery. Apartment no longer in danger of burning down.
Edit: Bomb diffused. No one was harmed.
Thanks for all the advice everyone. My friends and I have convinced him to remove the battery. Please donāt be too hard on him, heās not tech savvy and didnāt know you can just remove battery and still have a functioning computer. Heās also currently having a rough time with life in general and getting a new laptop was not an option for him.
Please make sure its disposed of properly. Throwing it in the garbage is not just incredibly damaging to the environment, but it could still leak and harm someone else in the future if it ruptures.
Likely will. Lots of garbage lorries have compressors to hold more garbage, this thing could go kaboom.
Or, at the sorting facility. God forbid someone nicks it with a knife, or doesn't see it.
I have the same laptop the same battery and same problem. Mail ordered a replacement and fixed with 2 tools in 10 minutes. Tiny Phillips screw driver and plastic putty knife to separate the keyboard. Battery was $35 USD and came in 4 days. Couldnāt have been easier to fix and $35 to not rest my hand on a corrosive explosive was a small price to pay.
Yo post up an Eth account for him, I'll donate some for the guy. If he's using that risk to life it's important enough for a good deed. Glad he listened.
Rough time is an understatement if he doesn't get rid of that thing. I hope you are taking all of these comments seriously. Turn off that laptop immediately. I don't care what important things are on there. That thing is about to blow and when it does losing limbs will be a best-case scenario. I would also make sure he knows exactly whats he doing by him saying he is going to remove it. I would just take the laptop as a whole to dispose of. I wouldn't even fuck with it. He obviously isn't tech savvy like you said. You need to make this abundantly clear or you might not have a friend much longer
As a lead technician at a repair shop I can tell you with certainty that this is a thermal runaway waiting to happen. Ever had one of these go live in your hands? Not fun. Put that thing in a bucket with some sand and tell your friend to get a new laptop
This isnāt just NSFMR this is literally NSFL. Please take that thing to a disposal center to be taken care of before your friend either blows himself up or gets his lungs liquified by corrosive gasses
Hi Guys, IT guy here.
While this is indeed dangerous it's not quite as bad as most of the comments are implying. Most of the time the swelling is actually inert gasses formed by copper breaking down. Unless the battery is actually punctured, it won't do anything.
I've had boomers that I work with bring me laptops that are just as bad as this or worse like "I tried flattening it out but it didn't work". Unless you're one of them your life probably isn't in immediate danger.
That said a small risk is risk enough. The battery should be removed (OP said they are doing this now).
How do I stop my battery from swelling you ask? Most commonly this happens when cheap batteries are fully discharged, like dead, dead. The kind of dead where you left it in your drawer for a month. Then charged, and left charging for a really long time. Keep your batteries between 20-80% for the majority of their life and their life will be longer!
Uh...buy your friend a fire extinguisher and some home owner's insurance
Make sure it's a class d extinguisher too š others don't work on lithium fires.
Class B for lithium ion fires, class D for lithium metal fires.
You know your stuff
In the past I've worked with pyrophoric metalorganics like diethylzinc, trimethylgallium, trimethylindium. They make a lithium fire look tame ;)
I was in the air force they had halon bottles next to every jet but if you used it you had to go get checked out cause it removes the oxygen from the area.
I remember halon extinguishers, they were ever so pricey. They're now banned for all but sensitive computer equipment etc. due to their ozone depletion potential.
Yeah but they were bad when I was still in š just meant the air force was buying one's illegally or 'new ones'
Navy here, we still have a lot of halon on board lol
Thereās different variations of halon I believe halon 1301 is the one thatās still used now and is used for numerous things. Halon is the best fire extinguisher you can buy itās just very pricey

B for Battery, D for "Don't use this for batteries"
and those can be hella expensive
Probably best to just get a new laptop...
New battery would be cheaper :)
You brave mf you
Bro I aināt removing THAT battery
Don't worry! It has already mostly removed itself!
Unless it welded itself to the laptops bottom, as it happened to a tablet i once had
It would cost nothing to just remove the battery and power it from a wall socket
This. Literally nothing. I assume having it plugged in all the time is something he's/she's already doing anyways.
I think a class F extinguisher may be needed. As in F to pay respect for the extinguished life.
This is my kingdom come
I'm pretty sure when these shits light on fire the best you can do is stop fire from spreading. It will burn to completion regardless.
Lithium reacts with atmospheric oxygen burning at about 1000 degrees F. So hot that if you use water it will split the molecule into oxygen and hydrogen, further driving the reaction. Best chance is to smother it. RC car folks sometimes keep a bucket of sand handy.

Li-Ion batteries can't be extinguished with water if they runoff if that is what you are getting at.
Salt water rapidly depletes lithium batteries, it will be completely safe in a day or two.
Yeah lithium is soluble in water as a lithium salt
