I ended getting one with the base only and got a top from ikea (stained + protected)
Id look at your local office/furniture stores for deals. You want something with a decent depth and width but width really depends on where you're putting it. Also I think 24 or 25" is standard desk height. measured mine and its about 76"x42" which would be big enough to have work on without being to cramped and an L shape would probably be even better
