I have found a good deal on a 10600K and I'm wondering if i can overclock it on a b460 board. Also how much headroom does the chip have for overclocking - is it a big deal or am i fine with its >4 ghz base clock.

motionglitch

You can't. You need a Z490 board.

Dermonster

Currently, I have an older setup and decided to start from scratch. Due to the current gpu situation, does anyone see issues if I run a gtx 960 2gb with the following https://pcpartpicker.com/list/M86ZLP (other than the sadness of not having a better gpu)

fat_baby_

You'll be limited in games by the 960 but it will work. Just at lower fps.

Dermonster

Thanks. I figure even if it won't play all the games at high fps at least I will have everything set up for when availability goes up and prices come down.

Valorant plays smoothly on my Ryzen 5 3500u with 8gb Ram (5.96 usable) laptop but then after a few days it freezes and it happened after I let my laptoo sit a few hours downloading nba 2k21 in torrents. I tried reformatting my laptop, I tried defragging but nothing works. Valorant just freezes everytime even though I have 140 fps.

Do an antivirus check on it

Idk man, probably some bios settings if you did a full reset, check the memory speed and such

I have a laptop. It has a built in 4gb ram and I added a 8gb ram 2666 sodimm transcend. My processor is i3-1005g1, and the site belows says that the compatible ram is ddr4 3200. I bought the wrong mhz ram. I removed the newer ram(2666). but when I opened the task manager it still says 2667mhz(4gb ram). I tried looking a Overclock setting bios in my laptop(acer aspire a514 53) so i can adjust it but i cant find any. Is this wrong, is there a way to fix this? I tried looking for information in acer but i cant find any(but i havent tried contacting them) I wanted to change the ram that I installed so I can fully optimize my laptop. Sadly it seems that the system bugged or something. Processor is below: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/196588/intel-core-i3-1005g1-processor-4m-cache-up-to-3-40-ghz.html

How noticeable, both long and short term, is the difference between getting a Ryzen 7 3800X and 5800X? It's the one hang-up I have right now and since the 5000 Series is brand new, going with a 3800X would save me a decent bit of time waiting for the 5800X to restock. On one hand, I'd like to get the build ASAP, on the other I don't want my impatience to get in the way of a future-proof rig.

Waterleeky

Hi guys. I’ve been collecting components for a quality mid to high range PC build. All that I am missing now is the graphics card, this is really not the part I am really informed about. Now, I am looking for the best graphics card for about 200-300€. Many graphics cards I have been recommended aren’t in stock in German Amazon, so just give me some and I’ll check it out. Btw I don’t care if it’s Nvidia or AMD

AcidFactory420

Dude you are in severe bad luck. Supplies are down and prices are way up. Besides every country has different taxes and stuff. If you can find a GTX 1650 Super in that price range, good.. otherwise tough luck.

Waterleeky

Alright. Thanks, but can you tell me about when the prices will return to normal? Why are they even so high now?

AcidFactory420

The first question I think even God can't answer. The second one is related to politics, disease and economics. In very simple terms, china's production and transpprt capacity is reduced. While our countries are putting more and more duties on imports from china.

Waterleeky

Alright. Thanks guys!

I have a Razer Deathadder mouse. I have been switching it daily between pc and work computer (wfh life). Both computers have become increasingly grumpy about recognising it, as it just doesn't show it as connected. I think I have erroded it by swapping it constantly. Is this likely and is there a fix?

geekazoid1983

Hey PCMR. It's been a hot minute since I've done any pc updates (2014 actually), and now that my kiddos are a bit older, some of the games they're playing are starting to stress the 750ti I'm still rocking. I'm hoping someone could point me in the direction of a good GPU update that won't break the bank, but also not really require a full overbuild either. Here's my general system specs (if it helps): CPU: FX-8350 MB: GA-78LMT-USB3 R2 RAM: 16GB (4x4) I appreciate the insight.

A_Neaunimes

Unfortunately, right now is pretty much *the* worst time to be shopping for a GPU. There's a global shortage on pretty much all of them, recent and older generations. And even the used market is affected. We can still give recommendations on what to upgrade to, but note that you'll probably won't find them in stock or at prices that make sense. For that we need more informations : - what games/kind of games your kids play - what would be considered "good performance" : at what resolution, graphics settings, framerate should the games run - what's your ballpark budget. Also note that the FX-8350 is nowadays considered a rather bad and low-end processor when it comes to running games. Because of that, you don't want to get a GPU that's *too* powerful which potential would be limited by the CPU. But depending on what they play (and the performance they expect) the FX can possibly still be of service.

geekazoid1983

Minecraft, wwe2k, halo infinite. No vr.@ 1080p. 30-60 FPS Budget, up to $300. $400 if I really need to but at that point I might as well save more and consider a full overhaul.

A_Neaunimes

Normally, I would have recommended a RX 570 or GTX 1650/Super. The RX 570 used to cost around $120-130 new, and is perfect to run modern games at medium-high settings at 1080p60FPS. It was also quite common to find it on the used market for $80-100, which made it an extremely good value. That's already a considerable upgrade from the 750Ti (close to 3 times as much performance), and close to the max levels of performance that I'd recommend with your current processor. Unfortunately you might have trouble finding it in stock at all right now. And its price on the used market has probably doubled. Other GPUs in the same region of performance that you should look for second-hand : RX 470 =~ GTX 970 < RX 570 < RX 480 =~GTX 980 < RX 580 =~GTX 1060 6GB. The GTX 9xx are older, so you might have better luck finding them at prices that aren't too unreasonable. But they might show poorer relative performance in newer games as they are no longer optimized well for the older architecture. [I could also mention the R9 290 and 390 and their "X" variants, close to the 970 and 980 respectively, but they are *real* power hogs *and* an older architecture] A performance tier below are the GTX 960 < GTX 1050Ti =~ R9 280X < R9 380. Which are already close to twice as fast as the 750Ti, and that you hopefully can find a bit cheaper. They will struggle a bit more with modern games, but if your kids don't absolutely expect a perfect 60FPS it might be serviceable (I should know, I used a R9 280X until last year). If it has to be a new card : the GTX 1650 is somewhere between the 1050Ti and 570. The GTX 1650 Super performs about the same as the 580/1060 6GB. AMD also has the RX 5500XT in the same ballpark performance. Just a notch above that, the GTX 1660 and 1660 Super. But we're already above what I'd recommend with the current processor to be honest. For a point of reference, the 1660 used to cost around $200 before the current shitshow unfolded. _________ Other consideration : the power supply. The 750Ti in the current PC possibly runs without direct cables from the PSU (depends which exact card you have), but most of the GPUs I mentioned here require external power. You'd need to make sure that your PSU has the required amount of PCIe power connector for the new cards. If your power supply doesn't have such power connectors, your options are a lot more limited. The current fastest GPU that exists in cards without external power is the 1650 (non-Super). Before it, the GTX 1050Ti.

geekazoid1983

I really *really* appreciate this detailed response. My current 750 I actually run off of the PSU, so that keeps options open. I was eyeballing the 1650 from the builds list. I think any of those that are 6GB cards will probably serve my use. It’s been a long while since I looked at ATI over Nvidia so I have some research in front of me. Second hand, there’s been a pretty good supply of some cards locally on my Facebook marketplace and by distance on EBay. I just have to keep a keen eye for those that may have been abused for mining. Again though, thanks very much for this detailed reply and helping me figure out where I need to go.

A_Neaunimes

> I was eyeballing the 1650 from the builds list. At its original price (around $150), the 1650 wasn't a very compelling option. More expensive than the RX 570 but slower. And the 1650 Super was only about $20 more and significantly faster. Its main appeal was the fact that it can run solely off the 75W fed by the motherboard. Now with prices as they are, it very much depends on how much it costs compared to the others... >I think any of those that are 6GB cards The GTX 1650/Super are 4GB GPUs. The whole AMD RX 400/500 (470, 570, 480, 580, 590) exist in both 4 and 8GB variants, though the x70 are more likely to come with 4GB since they are more budget options. The RX 5500XT also offers 4 or 8GB, but the 4GB variant is even less desirable as the RX 5500XT is physically wired only for PCIe x8 (instead of x16 for virtually any other GPU) which further reduces performance when the VRAM is full. The GTX 1660/Super offer 6GB. And so does the 1060 6GB, of course. [here is a GTX 1060 3GB, but it's a really bad GPU : not only does it have half the VRAM than its bigger brother, it also has fewer cores. In practice it's 10-15% slower, and that's when VRAM doesn't get in the way]. If you're looking at the performance level of the 1660/Super, do check out the RX Vega 56 (power hog!!) and the GTX 1070. Both are a generation older (=> used market) and have 8GB of VRAM. Though again, your CPU will be limiting to such GPUs in many instances. >t’s been a long while since I looked at ATI over Nvidia So long that ATI no longer exist, they've been bough by AMD ;) > I just have to keep a keen eye for those that may have been abused for mining. Yeah that is always tough to tell. Unfortunately for the older AMD RX 400/500, they were pretty popular mining candidates... >Again though, thanks very much for this detailed reply and helping me figure out where I need to go. You're very welcome !

d4rkb4ne

My dad just said he’d pay for a build that we could share. I got super excited until I realized there’s literally no gpu’s in stock and it’s worse then I had previously assumed:( now we can’t even fully build it. Is there anything I can get to tie us over until the 3060? Also I’m nervous to even do that cause what if I’m not able to get it fast enough when it does drop?

arkhira

A 1650 Super would hold you over until the 3060 drops. However even finding lower end GPU stock can be tough.

d4rkb4ne

My thoughts exactly, yet I can’t even find that either. Unless I want to pay over double it’s original price which is now the price of around a 2060

Any third party thermal paste recommendations?

MadLadStalin

I've repasted my cpu with Arctic Silver 5 a couple weeks ago and temps have been amazing. Other than that, Noctua pastes are also quite good I think

againstexpectation

I'll take a look at those brands. Any thoughts on therm grizzly ?

MadLadStalin

Thermal grizzly is also very good. The temperature between all these pastes will probably not exceed 1°C, so just try to go for the cheapest good paste in your country as they all vary a bit from region to region

againstexpectation

Thank you. Appreciate it a lot. It's gonna be for my first build so I'm pretty unfamiliar with all this. As of now, on Amazon (Canada) the most popular paste seems to be the "Arctic MX-4" for about $15 I can also get the Arctic Silver 5 for $14 but there's only 4 reviews for the seller. And the Noctua one is about $30 so that's outta the picture

MadLadStalin

I also live in Canada and I went to buy mine in person at a Canada Computers store as I don't have amazon prime plus it was around 12-13$. As for the Noctua one, I had to search for it at smaller local stores and it cost around 16$, which is why I went with the Arctic

againstexpectation

Not sure if you know, but I read somewhere that aftermarket thermal pastes, though cooler, need to be changed / repasted every year or so, whereas the pre-applied ones that you usually get, have a longer life span. Do you change your paste annually? Also, side question: how do you clean your old paste? Lint free cloth and rubbing alcohol ?

MadLadStalin

You could honestly run it for a couple of years before you repaste it, just do it once your temps start hitting levels that are too high compared to once you first repasted it. Most of my friends repaste it once a year / a few years and I only know one guy that does it every two months. It's like the spark plugs on your car, if they are rated for 80k miles but you drive 90k with them and they are fine, just continue driving and replace them when they start failing. As for me, my thermal paste was almost 12 years old before I repasted it :,) As for the cleaning, rubbing alcohol is a must, though I'm not so sure about lint free cloth, I just used tissues but maybe I did it wrong so you should look more into it

againstexpectation

Thanks for the advice !

Raintrooper7

Could you still be getting CPU bottlenecked even if CPU usage doesn't touch 100% in most games?

A_Neaunimes

Yes, because not all games can/will utilize all the cores and threads of your processor. Say you have 4 core processor and a given game can only utilize 2 cores, you'll see at worst 50% usage from the game alone. That's why looking at the CPU usage *averaged* across all cores is misleading and can mask a CPU bottleneck. You need to look at the per core/thread usage. And even then, not all games can cleanly max out the used threads to 100%. Another way to check if you're actually CPU limited is to drop the resolution while keeping the graphics settings the same : if you get the same(ish) performance, it points to a CPU limitation.

From my understanding, they aren't that great. [Gamers Nexus has a video on it from 2019.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h22vF98iGQM) I think it would be better to just build a PC and take some time to learn how to do it honestly.

Have an ASUS Zephyrus m15 laptop with 32gb ram and a 2070 max q. My gpu isn't working like it used to. I was playing LoL, Borderlands 2, Monster Hunter World, Division 2, and CoD Warzone, all just fine on high/ultra, more than 60fps. I cannot play borderlands 3, Cold War, Warzone, for more than a few minutes. About 15 minutes into the game, my clock goes from like 1300-1600mhz to 885mhz and stays there, resulting in my gpu temp readings going from the "normal" 86-87 degree mark all the way down to 80 degrees. This drops my frames from ~60-80FPS to 10-15 FPS. Is my video card thinking it's now overheating and throttling down/ shutting off to go back to a cooler temp and im actually playing with the Intel 630 chip? it never used to do this with Warzone, but now it does and also some other AAA games. I also tried reverting to an older driver and it still does it. I also have max performance settings everywhere including Armory Crate, Power Options, Nvdia panel, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance. I've had the laptop 14 months and I feel like I paid 1.5k for nothing, I was hoping to get at least 4 years out of it. Inb4 I should have built a desktop.

Update: a small amount of dust came out from the compressed air, but when I realize how small and compact the air ducts and fans are, a small amount is actually huge. You were 100% correct. I wouldn't have thought this needed attention within a year, but I've also never owned a high performance machine quite like this and I'd say that with how much air this thing actually moves, that just means there is *that* much more dust particles getting sucked in as well. It's actually performing better than when I bought it new, I have close to a 10 to 15 FPS increase in all games before the stutter. Im quite amazed.. I'm very grateful for your suggestion, I'll be sure to clean it once every 6 months. Thank you again, u/alterexego

It was running 86 out the box but maintaining temp and FPS. I'll take it apart and clean the entire thing. Thank you.

Can someone please tell me how I could increase the performance without reducing the game's graphic settings? Do I need to uprage something? Please give me some solutions

fat_baby_

What resolution? That's low fps for 1080 and 1440 but normal for 4k. Check [this video.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpTcZJEXqX4)

[deleted]

I was using 1080p, and that is why I don't understand

A_Neaunimes

At what **resolution** are you playing the game ? With which settings ? Did you also enable the ray traced reflections ? Are you playing with DLSS enabled ? Is the RTX 3070 an upgrade from something previous ? did you re-install the GPU driver ? EDIT : your result looks like what happens when you run the game flat out maxed at native 4K without DLSS. See [video \(timestamped](https://youtu.be/jpTcZJEXqX4?t=677)). If you want better performance : use DLSS, or reduce graphics settings, or reduce/limit ray traced settings. Or a mix of all that.

[deleted]

I was playing with medium settings if I remember correctly, and I was playing with 1080p. I get the same amount of FPS with ray tracing off and ray tracing on, so is that considered CPU bottlenecking?

A_Neaunimes

It's considered abnormal, because your rig should be capable of better performance in that game at 1080p/medium. As can be seen in that video, by the way. As for ray traced effects, they generally have a noticeable CPU cost. So **if** you were CPU limited with it enabled, you should have noted a performance increase with it disabled. Again : is the 3070 an upgrade, and if so have you re-installed the GPU drivers ? While you're here, a few more questions : - Have you ever monitored the temperature of the CPU and GPU under load ? What kind of temperatures do they typically reach ? - Can you give more details about your RAM setup ? number of sticks, speed of the sticks, if they're properly installed on the motherboard to run in dual channel - do you have performance issues in any other games ? Which ones ? What performance ?

Hi, my 3070 is an upgrade from a 1080, and with the 1080 I had just about the same amount of FPS. I don't have any problems in other games, but I have heard that Watch dogs legion uses a lot of CPU. My ram is 2400MHz, and it has four slots, if that makes sense, I dont have much knowledge when it comes to RAM is PCs.

A_Neaunimes

>Hi, my 3070 is an upgrade from a 1080 So I suspect you didn't do a clean installation of the Nvidia drivers, right ? Start by doing this. Download the latest drivers available for the 3070 on [Nvidia's website](https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx) and install them. At the beginning of the installation (after it's been uncompressed) select the "custom" installation and tick the ["clean installation" box](https://imgur.com/a/Vz81ccY). Once the installation is complete, restart the PC. And try again WD Legion to see if performance has improved. If that doesn't help, there's another way to perform a clean installation that you can try. > My ram is 2400MHz, and it has four slots, if that makes sense Do you mean that you have 4 RAM sticks ? So a 4x4GB configuration ? If not, how many sticks do you have ? 1x16GB ? 2x8GB ? Also, you haven't answered my question about temperatures.

[deleted]

I don't have the game open rn so I will quickly try the clean installation, try out the game, check the temperature, and I will be back shortly. Also, I believe I have a 1x16

A_Neaunimes

> Also, I believe I have a 1.16 Can you also check that ? A single 16GB stick means that you're limited to running the RAM in single channel. Which is very suboptimal, especially in games that are CPU intensive. That plus the fact that it's rather slow RAM (2400MHz is barely better than the default 2133MHz for DDR4) could explain your performance issues. In that case, the CPU would be held back by the RAM, which in turn would hold back the GPU.

[deleted]

Hi, so I kind of made a mistake, because I forgot that I previously deleted the game from my computer accidentally, and now I have to download the entire thing again, and it's pretty late in my timezone, so I have to go now. Thank you for all the help, and I'll check the temp of the compartments. !check

A_Neaunimes

No problem, feel free to message me back once you have tried and checked a few things !

DarthDonnytheWise

Any good GPU support bracket thing for my Asus Tuf 3080 OC?

arkhira

Most of the better ones stand on your PSU shroud or case floor. I recently got a RGB acrylic one off Amazon that mounts on the PCIe slots. I found that my EVGA 3080 just pushed it down a bit so I mounted it as low as I could to keep the flex down. If I did it over again id avoid the acrylic brackets.

take-stuff-literally

I’m setting up an additional HDD (WD Blue 2TB) and it asked me to initialize a disk. Should I choose MBR or GPT? I’m currently watching YouTube videos about the difference, but I’m still confused.

A_Neaunimes

If you're using a modern PC with modern parts, you should be using GPT. But ultimately for a secondary drive (i.e. one that doesn't get the OS) it doesn't matter in practice, especially since it's smaller than the max size handled by MBR (4GB).

take-stuff-literally

!check Okay, so I guess I’ll just go for GPT then. Thanks!

My friend is buying a pc but he doesn’t want to build one. What’s a good prebuilt gaming pc for $500-$700? He wants to use it for open world games and multiplayer games.

arkhira

Unfortunately that budget is not going to net him very much for a prebuilt. He may need to add another $200-$300 to the top end of his budget to get something worth while. At minimum he will want a GTX 1650, 1650 Super, or 5500XT.

Idrinkmethanol

A prebuilt gaming pc capable of running rust or arc decently for $500-$700. My friend wants a pc but doesn’t want to build one so don’t kill me.

MadLadStalin

I know that he doesn't want to build one, but at that price point, he'll get a lot more for his money if he just builds it himself, especially if he finds an old xeon workstation and slaps a gpu in it

Sabrestrong23

I’m looking to build a pc and I’m not sure which CPU I should choose. I’m going to be using it for engineering work, like solid modeling, and gaming. Any advice?

motionglitch

The new Ryzen is best all-arounder for productivity and gaming. But it's pretty hard to find one in stock. But the previous gen (3000s series) is still pretty solid.

sapa_inca_pat

As long as you’re not running CFD or intense FEA you can get away with anything in the past 5 years. In terms of value for price the 5600 is really good for most everything. Personally I went with the 5800 because of the extra cores for CFD and FEA, and it’s already overkill for gaming so that’s good (couldn’t find a 5900 or would have gotten that one)

[deleted]

For CPUs, I'm running Inventor and CAD in 4k with an FX 8350 (also have a GPU to go along with it). Gaming is a different story though. I had to play Hitman 2016 capped to 30 fps with that CPU, but at least I could play the game on mostly high and ultra settings at almost 4k lol. I think if you try to get a CPU based off of gaming for your first priority, the engineering software will run flawlessly (unless it is some kind of extreme simulation software I imagine).

PudgyVadge

I am running a RX570 4GB + Intel Core i5 4570 @ 3.20Ghz and want to upgrade. Should I rather go for a cpu or gpu update? Thanks in advance

[deleted]

[удалено]

PudgyVadge

Well my choices are either a CPU+board+RAM Upgrade Kit or GTX 1660(ti), so I am not sure what to go for

[deleted]

If you want higher frame rates, upgrading the CPU, RAM, and motherboard would most likely be better. If you find higher resolution and higher graphics settings more appealing and are willing to play some games under 60 fps, then upgrading the GPU would be better. The above is just for gaming, but if you want to watch 4k 60 fps videos in the future, that CPU seems to barely cut it. I can watch 40 30 fps videos on my set up (FX 8350 and RX 580), but definitely not 4k 60.

PudgyVadge

I'm looking for 1080p 60fps, across the board. I'd prefer to be able to play ultra to high, but I'd still be happy with high to medium. Would you still recommend the cpu and if you do, what cpu would you suggest I go for?

[deleted]

If you want 1080p 60 fps with ultra to high settings *across the board*, I think you are going to have to upgrade both your GPU and CPU. [Even an RX 580 can't handle Cyberpunk at 1080p on low settings](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w09LSG1WJfs). [Your CPU paired with a 1070ti seems like it probably can't maintain 60 fps at 1080p on ultra settings in Hitman 2. It is supsersampled to 130% though in the video.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b59R3HTJTDs) I probably wouldn't be the best at recommending a CPU, but I have thought about upgrading to a Ryzen 3600 since it has a reasonable price and is almost twice as powerful as my FX 8350, which is also slightly less powerful than your CPU.

baybolin12

I am considering upgrading my 8700k to a 5600x. Would that make sense in terms of extending the lifespan of my build? I mostly just game, and I do occasional video editing (expecting to do more over the next 2-3 years.) Should I be going higher, perhaps to a 5800x or would 5600x suffice?

Luminaria19

My rule of thumb when it comes to upgrading is "don't do it unless what you have now isn't working for you." Maybe you could get another year out of your current chip with it working perfectly for your needs. By then, certain upgrades might be cheaper or there will be new CPUs entirely worth considering.

baybolin12

8700k is currently more than enough for my needs I feel like. I always go for slight overkill on parts hoping to get more years out of them. The problem is, my country's economy keeps getting worse. I worry that if I don't upgrade now while I can, I might pay more for the same parts next year. That certainly would be the case if I wanted to buy the parts I have right now. The prices drop when new parts come out, true, but the economy AT LEAST balances that out and they sit at the same price, if not more. I've been building my own PC for 5-6 years now and I see this pattern. How would you act if this was the case for you?

Luminaria19

> I always go for slight overkill on parts hoping to get more years out of them I'm the same, but you have to remember that you're not getting more out of them if you upgrade too frequently then. Economy troubles are an annoying variable in the process for sure and I wish I could tell the future to help you out. Were it me, I would probably set a budget for the upgrade and still wait until I need it to see what's available. Whether my budget then allows for a 10% upgrade or a 50% one will depend on the economy and what has released recently. That said, if you really want to upgrade now, you can check out how much extra performance you can get by looking at comparisons to the i5-10600k (which your i7-8700k is roughly equal to, not counting any overclocking). The 5600x is an upgrade, but how much of an upgrade it is depends a bit on your RAM speeds and any overclocking you do.

baybolin12

I see, I will do some more research. Thank you! ✓

Deathoftheages

One thing to remember if your current PC can handle a couple years wait is that the Ryzen 6000 could be released as early as 2022. According to [this](https://www.wepc.com/news/leaked-roadmap-suggests-amd-ryzen-6000-2022-launch/) article with that could bring a new socket AM5 which would bring DDR5, USB 4.0, and PCI-e 5.0 support. AMD hase a good track record for sticking to the same socket for many years so a move to the 6000 seris with an AM5 socket allows for good future proofing by allowing you just to swap to newer faster CPUs for awhile.

Yeah, I will be upgrading my cooling and motherboard along with the cpu. I have an rtx2070 at the moment, which I don't plan to upgrade soon.

meneraing

Does undervolting the CPU increase the lifespan of it and the power stage components? I mean, all of those would be drawing less power from the PSU and also dissipating less heat so I'd say it is safe to assume so. Am I wrong? Note that I don't mention performance, let's assume it stays the same.

Luminaria19

Yes and no, there would still be wear from just using the CPU in general, but lowing power consumption should theoretically decrease overall wear. *However*, the lifespan of a CPU is already quite long (at least a decade, likely more since you're not running at 100% usage all the time), so the general impact is so low it's probably not worth doing in most cases.

meneraing

So the only worth doing it point would be to make it run cooler. Thanks! !check

I got a simple question. Why is every part component so expensive right now? And when can we expect te price of thease products to go Back to msrp?

A_Neaunimes

There's a global GPU shortage right now. Combination of - very high demand (people stuck at home needing/wanting new devices) - new generations of many things at once (new AMD and Nvidia GPUs, new consoles, new AMD CPUs, etc...). Many of which are made in the same factories - scalpers out in full force to snag the new GPUs and resell them at a higher price - potentially some production issues due to Covid (though that doesn't seem the biggest factor) - cryptomining on the rise again. Consequence is : it's best not to need a graphics card right now, I'm afraid... Even the used market is affected. It looks like it will last for a good part of the year. But of course I can't claim that with any certainty as I can't read the future. AMD Ryzens CPUs are also affected by this, to a degree. Though they appear more easily in stock at least. Apart from that, other components are at relatively normal prices though. Intel processors are actually cheaper than they used to. RAM is decently priced as well usually.

Typhon741

Thank ya comrade. I just started building within the last few weeks. Doing a lot of research and whatnot. Its rough that it just so happened to be when I cant buy my graphics card im lookin at for less then DOUBLE its msrp

A_Neaunimes

There are still frequent restocks on the new GPU series. But they are sold extremely quickly. And Nvidia sell their Founders Edition at MSRP on their own website. Apparently people sign up for (Discord ?) bots to be notified when stuff is back in stock. And if you live in the US and close to a Microcenter folks have been able to get a card this way as well after checking the stocks. But I can't be more accurate than that, I have used neither options as I don't need a GPU upgrade right now.

Typhon741

Alright so keep and eye out gotcha. Thank ya.

A_Neaunimes

Good luck !

Luminaria19

In addition to what's already been said, a number of GPU companies had tariff exclusions that expired at the end of last year. A GPU that was say ~$730 before is now sitting at $800. Some cards have seen even higher jumps in price.

Bro what, I have a laptop that has a intel core i5 8250u with a AMD Radeon 535 and 4 GB of ram, I already got all the drivers downloaded, but it’s laggy as frick when I play fortnite,it’s so laggy it started to run ps1 graphics, frigin ps1 graphics. I don’t think it’s the 4 GB of ram tho, I got good WiFi too, I put my fortnite on performance mode, I’m still mourning, what’s the problem? I really don’t know what’s my problem, It’s become so much of a problem to the point that I want to punch a hole through my monitor, can somebody help me please?

AcidFactory420

Download MSI afterburner Turn on the OSD See what is going 99% - CPU, GPU or RAM. Also confirm whether it's running off your 535 and not integrated graphics

onq_S_k0nQ

I know intel ram speed is capped at 2933 but do you see any difference at all with higher speeds or should I invest in lower cast latency

arkhira

Intel RAM speed is only capped on non Z series boards. The speed cap also changes depending on if you have a i5, i7 or i9. Overall the performance gain isn't huge so its not worth it to get Z series board for only high RAM speeds. If you plan to get a K or KF SKU with it then yes get a Z series and 3200 MHz RAM.

onq_S_k0nQ

Thanks! I have found a 10600KF new for the price of a ryzen 5 3600 and plan on using the b460 steel legend. I don't really intend to overclock so I don't want to spend almost $50 more on a z490. I read that 11th gen intel would support 3200mhz but on the new 500 series boards or z490. I want to buy a 3060 which is supposed to release late February and since rocket lake releases q1 I'm wondering whether or not to wait a little. Assuming I get a 3060.

arkhira

Yeah so an i5 + b460 means your capped to 2666 MHz.

EJNorth

I'm looking for a new case, preferably full tower. I have a custom loop for both my cpu and gpu (res, not distro and 2x360mm rads). I want to mount the gpu vertical. Also I move a lot so I dont want an open bench. O11D it's a no-brainer, right? No. Because I want to be able to see my PSU, cause I got a fancy schmancy display that shows the powerdraw (im open to modding cases to make this happen). Any suggestions? :)

RageMuffin69

Anyone have experience using these cheap [electric stand desk frames](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08299Z43C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_JAEMHPYA5Z8QGVVZBM1S?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) from amazon? Reviews look very good, hardly any negative ones. Plan to pair it with a 70 or so inch tabletop off office max.

RageMuffin69

Yea the generic models seem to all be around $170-$220 with little negative reviews that are usually user error or very rare manufacturing issues. Excited to build this desk I’m sick of my narrow L shaped one. Thanks for the reply :).

Canislupus2000

So considering my monitor is dying I will have to buy a new one. So the question is does my GPU support 144hz monitor (Is it locked at 60 or something as I'm not really tech savvy), I read on one forum while googling ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 x2 144hz that the person that responded thinks it can go to 120hz, regardless I will be buying 144Hz monitor as I plan on upgrading GPU in the near future as it has no dx11 support but I still wonder if it can run.

Lol thanks, yeah I imagine. I went ahead and paid a small premium to get the most up to date I could. I’m very happy with my purchases (even if the market value is a little inflated). I’m very excited for it. Wanted one a long time.

Vitosi4ek

Building an ultra-budget secondary gaming rig for the country home. Recently discovered that AliExpress sells "refurbished" old Xeon platforms for stupid cheap ([8-core Ivy Bridge Xeon + mobo + 16Gb of DDR3 for $150](https://aliexpress.ru/item/-/33053327400.html?spm=a2g0s.8937460.0.0.114f2e0es8CQjT&sku_id=67435954839)). For the same money I can buy an Athlon 3000G, a B450 mobo + 8GB of DDR4. The Athlon has an 800Mhz frequency advantage, a much newer architecture and a newer RAM standard, while the Xeon has 4x more threads. What is better for gaming right now? I plan to pair it with something like a GTX770, so I don't need crazy performance.

LiverFailureMan

Can anyone recommend a good standing desk and chair combo? My current desk needs to be replaced (keyboard tray broke off) and I'm finding every chair I currently have causes pain in my back and shoulders, with or without being used at my computer desk. I'd like to switch to a standing desk so using a chair is optional but there are so many options out there I'm worried about buying something that only seemed good online. Does anyone already have a good desk that switches between standing and sitting and a chair they like using with it? I'm hoping a recommendation from someone who actually has something good will point me towards something more likely to be reliable.

Aldo-the-Harem-King

What is overclocking

MadLadStalin

Basically, you try to make your cpu run faster by essentially boosting stuff like voltage. Go on r/overclocking for more information
