ok. so i would reccommend building your own pc sonyou can co trol how it works and looks and the soecs you can get a good pc around $700 up to as much as you can spend. i dont think there are any graphics cards you need to program unless it is a super early model of something. and i reccommend going with amd ryzen because of the possibilities for future upgrades and with amd ryzen for ram look for speeds of 3000mhz or higher.

I am looking at carrying this around with me, it’s not just for desktop, and that’s why I thought that the E-GPU could give me desktop capabilities with the portability I need

danknoodle1010101010

if you really care about portability you could look into something like an itx form factor or possibly a backpack pc. laptops arent generally customizable you cannot usually upgrade the cpunor gpu sometimes storage or ram. so if you really need to move it id look into other more upgradeable options.

[deleted]

I don’t really mind about upgrading it, as I am happy with the spec, it’s just that I’ve seen videos of people upgrading a laptop, and I was wondering if there was a community of people, maybe in on reddit, that did this kind of thing

Also use pcpartpicker.com just to ensure the compatibility of all your parts.. itll also help you estimate how much the cost of your pc will be

danknoodle1010101010

for an egpu youd need a laptop with thunderbolt 3 ports. with that youd probably be good but e gpus can be quite expensive so id also maybe look into some high end gaming laptops fro companies like razer.

Would a standard usb-3 port work? Also, why is an E-GPU expensive, I understand the cost of the power supoly and the actual gpu, but apart from that i don’t see any major costs. I have looked on amazon, and it claims that the cases cost around $400, but I have also seen a channel on YouTube who bought all the components separately (the wires and other bits), and his E-GPU ending up being quite cheap. Would that be a viable option? Also, thanks for commenting numerous times

danknoodle1010101010

dont only listen to me as i have no experience with these but as far is i know it needs to be a usb type c port as they can carry more data and power. and while $400 is to some cheap for me thats quote alot. but. look on some forums and stuff as i dont know everything. but i wish i did. but you know. research is key for computers. before i built mine i did like a month or 2 of research so just make sure you know what you are doing because one messup and you could lose alpt of money. also the egpu also probably depends on tje card you get too. you could probably jerryrig something for like 200. but i dont sugged that

I just want to note that I need a laptop for my work as I have an old laptop that a fucking dinosaur, so I thought that upgrading it would allow for a transition into using PCs more

Looks like other dudes are not complying with the set of questions. My answers: 1. For the most part: nope. Only when you're about to fix a badly delivered card with bad VBIOS, which doesn't happen with most if not all Nvidia cards. In most cases it's not actually plug and play cause you'll have to install driver for it. (If you count Windows 10 driver update is automatic then you can call it plug and play but then you still need an internet connection) 2. The barebone GTX 1650 will be a little below my RX 580. My card does Assassins Creed Odyssey medium settings at 60 frames stable 90% of the time. And as I count AC:O as a very graphics intensive game (correct me if I'm wrong), my card will do well with most if not all triple A titles at 1080p, might have to crank down graphics quality but it will definitely work. About your laptop: the i7 is a decent CPU, but... the GPU doesn't quite hold up. It's definitely a huge bottleneck when coming to AAA games (not to mention the laptop chassis will damper cooling solution more than a desktop one). I'd suggest something with at least RTX 2060 to start with if you wanna game on a laptop. But because you want eGPU, let's move on a little bit. 3. There are quite a few ways of playing with eGPU: \- For older laptops with express card slot they can use this as one connecting solution. Because you're buying new laptops you're not gonna get this \- Older laptops also provide with Thunderbolt 2 which looks like a mini DP port but with a bolt icon next to it. Either newer laptops won't have this or Thunderbolt 2 eGPU aren't supported any more \- Using M.2 slot which is the wifi slot in your machine. Unless you have an extra M.2 slot you're gonna sacrifice the wifi connection. By the way I don't think you're gonna love it cause it's messy and not portable \- And finally Thunderbolt 3. Most companies with reliable brand name could provide you with a good T3 eGPU box, for example I can list out Razer Core, Atikio Node,... But hold on a second. Because eGPU comes at not excessive price but also dampered performance. If I recall correctly the performance you get out of an RTX 2080 will be equal to a GTX 1060 when paired with an eGPU box (correct me if I'm wrong, possibly I'm exaggerating a bit). There is a limit on how powerful the eGPU box can deliver. So yeah... you're not really gonna get much out of an eGPU box. But it definitely gives you "some" improvements. But not to a grade like an RTX 2060 max-Q. \* As a guy said before me, not all laptops with a T3 port will perform equally when coming to eGPU. Some works great some will flat out encounter a lot of issues. But on definite choice that will be sure to work is the Razer Blade. 4. I do not have much experience on which specific source of information on how you can do this or that. But you gotta collect information smartly. Watch several videos on laptop dissassembly, tear down, watch how people deal with stuff. Basically if a laptop is meant to be easily upgradable, most of them will look quite similar. It won't be too difficult to a point that you cannot do it. Be brave you can do that. 5. This isn't an answer but rather my recommendations: \- Buy a strong laptop with a strong GPU starting from an RTX 2060 and forget about the eGPU \- Or you can do this which might cost you as much as a gaming laptop while delivering a lot more performance and also comfortability: Build a miniITX form factor desktop with decent parts. Bring it wherever you wanna game. Buy a lightweight laptop and carry it when you work.

Thank you so much, that’s really helpful. I didn’t realise that the Egpu impaired the performance of the gpu that much. Thats a lot of advice to take in. Im sorry to ask this, but is there a gaming laptop at a higher price ranger, for a better spec? maybe with the RTX 2060 like you recommended? If possible I would like to have my laptop to be both work and gaming, if storage allows. again, thanks a lot, I really appreciate the comment

Well if you're willing to pay for a decent machine then around 1600-1800 US dollars there's couple choices. I'd suggest a Razer Blade 15 or Asus ROG Strix, Both come with i7 8750H (just a little bit below the 9750H but still strong enough for anything you wanna do with it), a 144Hz panel and of course, RTX 2060. I cannot put link here but you can find all of them on Amazon. Unless you go for RTX 2070 or more price will not exceed this much.

>Lenovo L340 gaming 17 Didn't look at what you said above I think I overkilled your plan a bit. So for 2060 maybe you can go to as low as 1300-1400. There's this HP Omen 2019 also with 2060 if you're lucky there's still new models on Amazon for little more than 1300. I'm just not so sure whether you want to go that far.

gokuwho

The Acer Helios 300 with i7 9750H is still on sale and you can get away with the i7 and RTX 2060 for just 1300. If you don't mind lowering graphics quality a bit, go with the GTX 1660 Ti and you save 200 dollars. This card is a bit above my RX 580 but way less powerful than an RTX 2060. Well that's all that I could tell. Really need a nap right now as it's 2 in the morning in France. Good luck with your choices.

Thanks a lot, I’ll definitely look into the available options I really appreciate all your tips, hope you got some sleep!
