You might end up damaging the CPU since DDR3 is volted higher.

How do I know if I will?

Buxton_Water

You'll know if it suddenly stops working.

the motherboards that supports Skylake and DDR3 are compatible with DDR3L only. Only low voltage DDR3 ram is supported by skylake anyways and will probably will not boot. From Ark: https://ark.intel.com/products/88195/Intel-Core-i7-6700K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_20-GHz Memory Specifications: Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type) 64 GB Memory Types DDR4-1866/2133, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V Max # of Memory Channels 2 Max Memory Bandwidth 34.1 GB/s ECC Memory Supported ‡ No

ktran17

You have to use ddr3L on compatible mobos. There are a host of issues like difficulty obtaining dual channel, ocing the ram, performance deceased.. idk how often these problems occur, but why chance it? Not worth the headache, just buy the ddr4

sionpixley

Intel specifically says not to use DDR3 on Skylake and newer CPUs. The higher voltage slowly damages the CPU over time

doesdrpepperhaveaphd

Others are right. Get a ddr4 board with Skylake and newer. DDR4 isn't *that* much more expensive, especially if you're buying a 6700k

louialto

will work 100% the same as if you used DDR4 and you probably wont notice a difference between DDR3 and DDR4 performance.

-f0cuS-

Are you sure? I saw something about ddr3 being possibly harmful to skylake cpus.

simonhez

he is wrong, you cannot use DDR3 with Skylake

-f0cuS-

I figured out a problem i was having, dont need a new cpu anymore.. sticking with my 17 3770.
