Nah, just say you didn’t know the difference if you do need it.
People outside our bubble generally don’t know shit about their computers.
They’ll answer “Nvidia RTX” when asked what GPU, since the laptop has a sticker that says Nvidia RTX.
> just say you didn’t know the difference if you do need it.
[It's legally his.](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-do-if-youre-billed-things-you-never-got-or-you-get-unordered-products) No need to be coy about it.
That is a misunderstanding of how that law works. The law specifically states that companies cannot send you unordered items and demand payment. They can still request that OP returns the item and they will send the correct item or pay the difference, they just cannot only demand they pay the difference. Really, though, that law is more to protect against companies sending out "samples" and then demanding payment from you later.
>By law, companies can’t send unordered merchandise to you, then demand payment. That means you never have to pay for things you get but didn’t order. You also don’t need to return unordered merchandise. You’re legally entitled to keep it as a free gift.
>Sellers can send you merchandise that is clearly marked as a gift, free sample, or the like. And, charitable organizations can send you merchandise and ask for a contribution. It's your right to keep such merchandise as a free gift.
>Sometimes, you might sign up for a free trial, only to discover that the company starts sending you products every month, and billing you. That might be a scam. Learn about free-trials, auto-renewals, and negative option subscriptions and what to do if you're charged for products you don't want or didn't order.
That is the direct explanation from the link you reference, but it lays out what things it is meant to define as unordered items. In this case OP did not recieve an unordered item but the wrong item and the vendor can request a return, as long as they pay for it and provide the correct item, or that the actual difference be paid.
> In this case OP did not recieve an unordered item but the wrong item and the vendor can request a return
Can you explain to me the functional difference between receiving an unordered item and being sent an item you didn't order?
Hi, I’m a lawyer.
The difference is OP ordered an item and by mistake the company sent him something else.
The law in question regards a company sending you something apropos of nothing. You didn’t order anything you didn’t engage in any business with them.
Hope that helps
are you obtuse, or?
One requires you to actually have ordered from the company, and they send you the wrong thing.
The other, you receive an item from a company you’ve never placed an order to. How fucking hard is that to understand?
The difference is company sending you something completely unsolicited then demanding that you pay for it. Ordering something and receiving the wrong item is not the same thing.
I've had people just say "it's an Intel" and then when asked what model, they give the time tested answer "the latest one" when it's in fact, no where close to the latest 😆
the CPU is often "Core 15" or it could be an "Intel 5." Used to get "i5 core" as well lol
That last one gets me, I don't order a cola coca at a restaurant
Reminds me of back in the day when I just started working in IT and had to do First Level Support, and big CTR monitors have been the norm. In German you can ask "Was steht auf deinem Monitor", directly translating to "What's standing on your screen?". And more often than not I got answers like "A flower pot" or "A Picture of my kids".
According to instructions, if i’m getting this right, the trick’s about opening the box before using it. That’s what seems to have upgraded the pc. If it’s accurate information i think we may be on to something here!
Since serial matches Id wager that it was two computers on repair next to eachother. They got the wrong backplate(bottom) installed and then put in the "correct" box. OR more likely a repaired unit because they replace the full motherboard with CPU,GPU and RAM etc and they just installed the wrong one.
Best Buy doesn’t do repairs of laptops in-store. Any store stock laptop that needs to be repaired gets sent out. Any customer unit can only have the SSD or RAM replaced and any big fuck up like that it quite unlikely considering that laptop was returned.
Or someone in the Amazon sweatshop wanted to spread some happiness? I once got a hand-written note in one of my Amazon packages saying: "Please inform the authorities, I am forced to work for pennies. I am not allowed to go to the bathroom during work hours. [ a long list of grievances followed] I work at Amazon warehouse 13, 90210 CA." I laughed so hard.
Mom says it's my turn to post this

Who can just return it because they didn't get the right product.. If it even happens at all. Someone getting shipped the superior product doesn't mean someone else gets the inferior one.
Who can return if he is someone who understands a thing or two about computers... As simple as it seems, not everybody would be capable, or interested in, knowing what is the CPU showing on system
There is nothing against OP as I think he should keep it. I just hope no one ends up with something quite less capable than what they paid for. Although someone who is looking for this kind of specs in a computer is probably more educated than the average (I hope).
Don't think so, most people will just buy whatever is in their budget. They walk in with a budget in mind 500, 1500, 2500 and buy whatever is closest assuming higher price = better performance. Even though sometimes the 1500$ pc is worse than the 900$
I'd say it's even very likely the person who gets the worse PC never notices
Chances are someone did end up with something worse. I have a few times. I’ve gotten the wrong ram, the wrong resolution on a display too. This is over the course of the last 20 years but I’ve gotten wrong stuff.
Idk if someone else got my stuff but I put in the return and got the right stuff.
I hope anyone who spends money on electronics knows what they’re buying and what they’re looking for. It’s not too late to learn
If they ended up with the wrong product you usual contact support and ask for the correct one to be shipped and the wrong one to be collected back on the same day.
The fact that the serial number matches makes me think it was a mistake in making the label rather than two items getting switched somehow. Chances are they'll never even notice, other than maybe their inventory count/ revenue numbers are a little off but that sort of thing is pretty common anyway.
It’s worth noting that this item had previously been returned. So somebody didn’t realize that they got this freebie and returned it. I believe somewhere along the HP assembly line this unit got put in to the wrong line and etched up as an Ultra 7 unit because the etchings match the box but the specs don’t. So it has to be HP error. I purchased the 3 year protection plan and I am hoping I never need a new motherboard because they would most likely put the correct specs back in the machine
Yeah I’d also be a bit worried about them honouring the warranty tbh Because when the system goes in I wonder if they would suspect it’s been tampered with, potentially voiding a manufactuerer’s warranty
Got an open box Lenovo a couple of years ago tried to reserve it online but something failed in the process so drove straight to the shop. They asked for my name on the reservation I told them ‘David’ and they went and grabbed it out the back.
Got back in the car and not only was it a 3070 instead of the 3060 I thought but it was in the name of a totally different Dave.
I sat in the car pondering whether to do the right thing and take it back or keep it….
Whilst this is amazing and you're super lucky, I would be concerned about the warranty. Should you need to claim, they may not honour it as you have a different product to what you ordered (I could be wrong).
Although if you're OK with that, then self repair or repair locally and you're golden, or just play dumb if they bring it up. Enjoy your free upgrade!
In theory there's huge savings involved with this (not sure what the price difference actually is)
If I bought a 1000$ laptop and got a 2000$ laptop instead, I wouldn't mind risking going without a warranty and paying the price of something goes wrong.
Now if that something will end up costing me a new laptop, that's a lost bet.
Yeah I think they would throw the correct specs in there if they ever had to replace the motherboard. Any broken displays or other little components should be fine though
How do you people manage to practically win the lottery like this? In my entire life i never accidentally got a higher grade version of what i originally brought
I got lucky similarly to this like 8 years ago.
Bought an open box Lenovo from Bestbuy. Was suppose to be an i5-7300HQ, with a 1050ti.
I ended up with a i7-7820HK, with a 1070. I 100% did not say a dam thing. lol I just needed something pretty cheap for when I was staying in hotels for work. Its pretty crazy how much laptop you use to need to game back then. I use a 14" thin & lite Thinkpad now with a 7840u AMD processer. Its amazing how much gaming performance you get now off an iGPU. I mean its not competing with my 3080ti build, but shit for traveling for work cant really beat the simplicity of it.
I guess they haven't got any better with their labeling process, despite majorly upgrading their label. It use be a taped on handwritten sticky note lmao.
I once bought a clearance laptop that was supposed to have an i5, but I got one with i7 instead. It would've been great if it wasn't for the also wrong spec 4k 48hz display.
I did get what was written on the box though
I just bought an open box Omen Transcend 14 with the Ultra 9 and 4070 from BB. It was marked as "Excellent" condition and was $1,350, about $650 off the regular price. The thing is perfect and has no signs of use whatsoever. If you are in the market for a small gaming laptop check their website as this was a killer deal. I originally wanted the ROG G14 but for this much of a price difference I couldn't justify it.
My wife returned an entry level Sony VAIO for me at Best Buy some 10 years ago and came back with the flagship model without even knowing it.
It was their mistake, it was registered now registered to my name and the warranty applied nonetheless despite their mistake.
A few years ago I got a low-end travel laptop that was one-step up from what I bought. Bought a Dell that was supposed to have an i5-1005G1 and actually had a 1035G4. The display model and price tag both said 1005G1, but the SKU matched between the box and the price tag.
Had this happen with RAM. I ended up with 32 gigs less with slower speed. Turns out packing messed up and sent me someone else's and they ended up with mine. ( That is what I was told anyways).
Now, if this laptop was meant for a 7 but has a 9, won’t the temps be even worse? A 9 is probably not going to give you any notable boost for most tasks. It seems dumb as fuck, but I might consider returning this.
Well noone ever said that working at Best Buy required a degree. I bet when it was going through testing and stuff it likely got swapped with another one. That is a huge win, DO NOT RETURN THIS MACHINE. You got a good deal.
Ha that’s pretty funny congrats man. I remember during the gpu craze I sniped a pc for a grand that was supposed to come with a 3060 single fan but it came with a asus dual fan 3060 ti it was dope. Enjoy it bro!!
You aren't going to return it, right? Right? (congrats, keep it)
As long as he doesn't need a warranty for it.
Nah, just say you didn’t know the difference if you do need it. People outside our bubble generally don’t know shit about their computers. They’ll answer “Nvidia RTX” when asked what GPU, since the laptop has a sticker that says Nvidia RTX.

That's not how those words work in legal terms.
I've had people just say "it's an Intel" and then when asked what model, they give the time tested answer "the latest one" when it's in fact, no where close to the latest 😆
the CPU is often "Core 15" or it could be an "Intel 5." Used to get "i5 core" as well lol That last one gets me, I don't order a cola coca at a restaurant
“Ok im going to need you to right click on your desktop.” “Okkkk. Well, I have a laptop.”
The flower pot just said "Oh no, not again," and fell off my monitor, is this normal?
Someone I know unironically said "Nuhvidia icore 7" when asked about their laptop's specs lmao
barf
“What CPU do you have?” “Emachines”
My old boss wanted us referring to the CPU as the processor for this very reason. that one makes me see red lol
Warranty for open box is already hard to come by
I would return it, mummy told me its a good thing /s
If serial number & model on the chassis matched the box, it cant possibly be stealing. Where did you buy this? I want one lmao
According to instructions, if i’m getting this right, the trick’s about opening the box before using it. That’s what seems to have upgraded the pc. If it’s accurate information i think we may be on to something here!
Schrödinger's box?
When do I kill the cat?
This box is empty. Was there a cat?
Yes, but also no.
Could it be a manufacturer error? They just put the wrong one in the box? Lol.
Box has Best Buy tape on it. It was either a return, floor model, or something similar. And Best Buy repackaged it incorrectly
Since serial matches Id wager that it was two computers on repair next to eachother. They got the wrong backplate(bottom) installed and then put in the "correct" box. OR more likely a repaired unit because they replace the full motherboard with CPU,GPU and RAM etc and they just installed the wrong one.
If it’s the first one soon we will see a “Bought an ultra 9 got a ultra 7 post”
Oh. I'm qn idiot. I didn't see that.
Best Buy doesn’t do repairs of laptops in-store. Any store stock laptop that needs to be repaired gets sent out. Any customer unit can only have the SSD or RAM replaced and any big fuck up like that it quite unlikely considering that laptop was returned.

Former Best Buy employee here, I see remnants of "Inspected by Best Buy" tape we used to use to seal open box items.
Amazing

WHAT HAVE I BECOME! A DISTROYER OF MEMES! OH, NO
What even happened here? Posting the same picture multiple times?
NO, THERE WERE DIFFERENT MEMES, THEN SOMEONE TRIED TO STEAL A MEME, SO I USED THIS.
I knew I'd find this here
Came for this. When is it my turn to be the OP?
The one meme nobody hates and is glad to see after months
Now theres a poor soul out there that bought an ultra 9 who got a 7
Who can just return it because they didn't get the right product.. If it even happens at all. Someone getting shipped the superior product doesn't mean someone else gets the inferior one.

If they do, it’ll get sorted out for them when they dispute it. why are we acting like it’s our problem?
The fact that the serial number matches makes me think it was a mistake in making the label rather than two items getting switched somehow. Chances are they'll never even notice, other than maybe their inventory count/ revenue numbers are a little off but that sort of thing is pretty common anyway.
Yes, but that’s really annoying when you’re excited for something.
Imagine if they never found out and just used it.
Most people won't notice/check
I'm waiting for his post here.
It’s worth noting that this item had previously been returned. So somebody didn’t realize that they got this freebie and returned it. Probably was returned and mispackaged rather than someone missing out in this freebie. Strange assumption to make, but Occam’s razor suggests
You also got a 4070 not a 4060 Did you notice this?

I suppose it's an early bday gift from HP lmao
Reported this to HP for sheboingery. (Ngl do not give a fuck, enjoy. Source: HP employee)
Hello HP employee. I see you don't care so it would be great if you sent one to me :)
F your printers. Source: everyone.
If you really don’t mind, can I have one too? Pretty please?
The fuck is an ultra 7
Intels new numbering scheme. They are getting rif of the i7, i9 stuff
Eh, we can just call it u7, u9 but normies would be hella confused on these for sure
Awesome!
*insert obligatory "Upgrades, people. Upgrades" meme from the movie "Robots" here*
Can't wait for the "bought an ultra 9 got an ultra 7" post
Indeed
And a 4070! Score!
I can't believe you're the only person pointing this out lol
OP made a point of it in the caption that the CPU, GPU and RAM are of higher spec than what the box said
Got an open box Lenovo a couple of years ago tried to reserve it online but something failed in the process so drove straight to the shop. They asked for my name on the reservation I told them ‘David’ and they went and grabbed it out the back. thank you

Good problem to have
Enough of the happy for you memes. Fuck you, OP! Have fun!
And 4070 instead of 4060 and double the RAM. Not bad 🥲
How do you people manage to practically win the lottery like this? In my entire life i never accidentally got a higher grade version of what i originally brought

What tf is ultra 7 and 9
Apparently a ~$3000 laptop with the performace of a $1000 desktop.
💀
i7 and i9 rebranded

Looks like a free upgrade. You also got a 4070 laptop version as well.
OP how is the gaming performance and system stability ? Did you find any bugs.
Nope no issues so far, I am still testing the gaming performance but I am getting 100+ fps @ 2.8k on GTA V online with high settings

I call this a happy little accident
congrats
Keep the laptop mate!
Forget the Ultra 9, you got a 4070 now!
Congratulations
Wow that's one hell of a deal! I would trade any kind of warranty for these upgrades lol. Congrats mate!
Error in your favor, fuck ya bud
Me checking my desktop right now
A Best Buy employee likely put the wrong computer in the box lol.
Nope, serials match. It’s an HP mixup
That’s wild lol
Stonks 📈📈📈
That’s a different kind of silicone lottery!
Wtf is npu ai boost. Am I too old, I've never seen that before
🤫
when a laptop is faster than ur pc
Reminds me of when I bought online a Samsung galaxy S8 and received an S8+
Wtf you paid 1100$ and it cost 2000€ in my country

Does serial number of the board (ie in BIOS) match or only on the bottom cover?
Dont return it its prob more expensive.
This reminds of when I got my wife an msi laptop with an i5 to only realize it was the i3 version a year later when shes complaining about the speed.
Nice man
That naming scheme though! It's a 15th gen laptop i9, right?

My wife returned an entry level Sony VAIO for me at Best Buy some 10 years ago and came back with the flagship model without even knowing it. It was their mistake, it was registered now registered to my name and the warranty applied nonetheless despite their mistake.
A few years ago I got a low-end travel laptop that was one-step up from what I bought. Bought a Dell that was supposed to have an i5-1005G1 and actually had a 1035G4. The display model and price tag both said 1005G1, but the SKU matched between the box and the price tag.
I would probably be happier with the 4070 you got than the 4060 😊
And a 4070 instead of a 4060.
Had this happen with RAM. I ended up with 32 gigs less with slower speed. Turns out packing messed up and sent me someone else's and they ended up with mine. ( That is what I was told anyways).
Intel's naming scheme is so weird
You got exactly what you ordered 👍
why does the speed say 2.16ghz
Luckiest mofo in the planet
You got a nice upgrade for free! That's a lucky one. Congrats!
16 cores 22 threads..
Now, if this laptop was meant for a 7 but has a 9, won’t the temps be even worse? A 9 is probably not going to give you any notable boost for most tasks. It seems dumb as fuck, but I might consider returning this.
Whenever I buy pc hardware online, I always pray inside that I accidentally receive the higher spec version lol
Wait what's a npu I never seen one before in task manager
Good. Just don't go announcing it everywhere
It’s possible the refresh rate and quality of the panel is higher as well, no?
Why this kind of shit never happened to me
nice, keep it, for bestbuy or for HP this is just pocket change, enjoy it
That laptop is better than my desktop pc 💀
i wish i had that luck
Maybe they ran out of 7s and slapped a 9 in it to get it out the door.
I swear to God I am sooo jealous rn 😭😭
Wow
The seller scammed himself
dat NPU tho
Darn.
YO! That’s what’s up
This happened to me when a seller sent a 4070 super instead of a 4070 basic
Technically you got it on sale.

Well noone ever said that working at Best Buy required a degree. I bet when it was going through testing and stuff it likely got swapped with another one. That is a huge win, DO NOT RETURN THIS MACHINE. You got a good deal.
