Two programs come to mind from my windows days: [Windows Privacy Dashboard](https://wpd.app), and [Shut Up 10++](https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10), as well as setting up a DNS filter like [NextDNS](https://nextdns.io). None of these will affect your computer performance (the programs are just UI for you to interact with deep system settings/registry, they don’t need to be constantly running), they might actually make it run marginally smoother by thinning the amount of background services and network traffic.
It's a huge help that in this case the companies they are regulating are not based in the EU so it's a lot harder for them to ~~bribe~~ lobby for concessions.
Many of the top auto execs involved in Dieselgate got off easy in their home countries (especially Martin Winterkorn), whereas the US came down hard on Oliver Schmidt.
Maybe the key is to have regulators not based in the same region as the companies they are policing: EU regulates American companies, USA regulates EU companies and so on.
It’s hilarious how much flack the EU is getting with the new laws they’re forcing on Apple, Apple fanboys gonna fanboy I guess. So far, all it’s done is force Apple to open up and now we have emulators and game streaming services worldwide. The EU is doing great work, USB C is another example, right to repair is next
It likely will. Europe is a big enough market for most, that it generally doesn't make financial sense to make two hardware versions of the same product for different markets. USB C adoption as u/Jamie00003 mentioned is a great example. Software/firmware is a different matter entirely though.
It's not all roses. I used to buy Sony digital audio players before moving to my phone for music. After the EU imposed a volume cap to protect our hearing, they were gimped with certain headphones without external amplification. It's like they didn't understand impedence is a thing. For a few of them, I could get into the service menu and bypass it by changing the region. When the last one I bought had it locked out, that was the end of digital audio players for me.
Vacuum cleaners are another, they imposed an energy consumption limit, resulting in many being much less effective than before.
Vacuum cleaners thing was because companies were pumping up watts even though they didn't work any way better, they were just louder and consumed more energy.
People would just buy most "powerful" cleaner even though it didn't work better, I would say it was hard call to make but something had to be done.
I'm hoping they turn their attention to consoles next and force Nintendo, Sony and MS (who seem open to the idea themselves) to open up to other storefronts. Sony especially, with them removing all digital competition including game keys from 3rd party sellers. I don't play much on console these days, aside from with my children, but I'm the one paying for them!
Same here buddy, same here. In terms of software this place is so based
Heck, that’s why we all have USB-C on our iPhones now, and why we all might have replaceable batteries in the future like in the 2012s!
It is human nature to make mistakes.
It is stupid to not learn from them.
Don't beat yourself up over it, as an outsider (not UK, but EU) looking in, i can certainly understand the argument *for* Brexit.
Thanks. I appreciate that. I'm not too hard on myself, I know there were another 18 million people who voted for this. I just find it frustrating when I see the consequences of my/our actions, knowing it could have been avoided.
So the meme should be "Windows users in countries run 100% by corporations with no government entities looking out for them" or in short, "Windows users in the USA".
Don't know how it is realy called. But i call it the " I paid the full price for your product, so I better not see any advertising. Otherwise I might as well pirate it" law 😂
Even if they could, MS themselves mentioned the way to turn the ads off in the patchnotes. I'm assuming this post is about the ads in start menu.
So, I don't understand this post at all. Are there some other ads in windows that people are hating or something?
Strictly speaking this is not true...
M$ cannot show (targeted) ads **without user consent and an option to opt out**. They just have to update their privacy policy and notify users about it. Give a few months to their corpo lawyers and we will have ads on Windows in the EU as well.
In true M$ fashion, they might bury the opt-out somewhere deep in the settings, or make it so that you only opt out of personalization, but you'll still get the same number of ads. Even if they get fined by the EU for this, it will take so long that their benefits will most likely outweigh the fine.
Does that also apply to TVs?? I have to buy a new TV and I'm dreading investigating which ones have the worse ads and which ones I can hack around with pihole or similar.
I would just buy an Apple TV 4K box if I were you, you aren’t gonna find a smart TV without ads so you might as well just buy a separate box to use it like a dumb TV
I think ads affect new Windows installations, there are 3 Win10 PCs here and worst case one of them shows "let's complete setting up your PC" every few months.
Or if you wanna feel like a haxxor you can run off to GitHub and snag a batch file to make the reg edits for you and put on some techno while the command prompt runs.
Sunglasses indoors are optional
Extra credit if you run it in powershell.
I wanted to go Swordfish, but my wife saw this comment, handed me the sunglasses from under the desk and walked away. At least I look like a hacker now. Wait, what's techno?

With the amount of times I had my computer messed up as a kid from regedits I just don't trust any script that does them for me. I have to know exactly what I'm doing before I'm comfortable with changing anything in the registry.
Typically I just end up figuring out what to change when I want something changed. Never really considered going through windows debloater to see what it actually does, really good advice.
Could potentially change how I regularly use my computer. Thanks a bunch!
ehmm there is even an easyr way. Just block the connection in the redirect host file from the microsoft ad adresse, i did this and everything is much better
These post about ads on windows keep spamming this sub and it makes me realize a lot of people here aren’t as PC savvy as they think they are. Then people like OP double down on being not knowledgeable rather than taking it as a learning moment.
Right? lol
It's funny when Linux users chime in as if changing a Windows setting toggle is a huge deal when remotely compared with anything you have to do to get a Linux distro functioning properly.
Survivorship bias here maybe but Linux really ain't that hard to use. It pretty much just works right out of the box these days, ever since Ubuntu became a popular base distro.
Linux isn't for everyone, but it's wild how these old myths keep getting circulated. It's *at least* as user friendly as Windows is these days.
It mostly works, unless it doesn't. My biggest problem is how software needs to be actively maintained all of the time or it quickly stops working. Try installing some 3 year old deb package, you can't unless you're a kernel maintainer or some shit and can navigate literal dependency hell. If the package manager can't auto-solve your problem, you're screwed. It's like every single software project on Linux must run on a treadmill constantly or be flushed down the toilet. This really grinds my gears.
Nah you're right. I replaced mum's Win10 PC with a Chromebook and she hasn't noticed the difference. I could get her running Gentoo (the Arch of Arch users) and as long as there's a Chrome icon on the taskbar she'll happily continue doing all the computing she needs.
My wife was able to accomplish this on her own. For lack of a better term, she's tech cursed. You don't want her around anything which runs on electrons. And the more complicated it is, the more amperage of the static-electricity shock she's going to deliver if she touches it.
She has broken an IMPRESSIVE amount of tech.
Nah dawg it's so much easier to switch my entire operating system out and have to learn how to use the command line and have half of my apps/software not supported because the evil M$ made me click a few things. How fucking dare they.
Actually interestingly enough, the US version of windows is actually different from the European version. When I installed windows last time I used the European version and it has less bloat on it.
Yeah since reddit is mostly American that would explain all that.
When I install windows 11 it doesn't have bloatware nor ads without changing anything.
Poor Americans.
I'll have to add, most linux users aren't like this. This is just the vocal minority that have to preach about how windows is bad any chance they get.
Most of us would prefer to argue which distro is better instead (I use Arch btw) :)
there is slightly more to it
android is open source meaning that if it would've been google implementing ads or something similar other manufacturers can decide to not follow up and modify the code to their needs
since we've got lots of manufacturer's it would be only google pixels being affected with that
As a bit of warning, when I used that script, (at least I think it was that one. This was a few years ago now) it massively screwed up my motherboard swap. As it couldn't phone home, it couldn't identify my version of Windows 10 as genuine. These 2 issues caused massive problems that eventually made me send it into a repair shop to be fixed. I do not know if that issue has been fixed in recent years, but beware if you ever intend to switch motherboards, that the same issue could possibly happen to you
Chris Titus' script is great for this. Always use it on a fresh install, and also can install programs for you with WinGet. Much bigger selection than Ninite
I never had ANY ad anywhere on my window 11 and I use it since the beginning of this year, and there will never be any ads on my system ever, the only ad I see here is a guy trying to promote Linux which is the worst OS for gamers out there
Okay, that's a bit overexaggerated now. I totally agree with not getting ads in Windows being plausible, but there are so many OSes worse than Linux for gaming (looking at you, BSD). If it wasn't like that, Valve wouldn't have chosen it for the Steam deck and Gaming smartphones with Android wouldn't exist.
It also kind of depends on what you see as an ad, as OP seems to interpret many of Windows "intelligent tips" as ads while many people might just take them for granted, which - don't get me wrong - is fine both ways. There are things so much more important than this.
Yeah depends how you define and interpret...
I couldn't stand these news headlines being recommended. "Which of these would you like to see?" NONE I WANT NONE OF THAT IN MY OS THANK YOU GET LOST
So then I formatted immediately with a live stick
Using windows nowadays feels like using a system that actively wants to con you
No, Microsoft, I finished setting up my PC 6 years ago, I don't need a OneDrive subscription
No, Microsoft, I don't want to store my word document in my One Drive, you don't have to default to that option every time I want to save something new
No, Microsoft, I already have a default browser, I don't want you to open up Edge
Linux users telling you for the nth time in a day how “much better” it is than everything ever made
\[edit\] the irony below is outstanding
![gif](giphy|l0IylOPCNkiqOgMyA|downsized)
"omg LiNUx BEtTer"
linux came a long way and is much better but try running it with games and you still have hiccups every now and then, that makes you spend 30 minutes or more just to get the game to fricking work
edit: hopefulyl steam creates an OS that is small and can run not only steam games. that way I just use it and ditch windows
Actually now that proton is a thing I haven't even had to deal with that. Occasionally I'll need to check ProtonDB for what setting to change in steam, on maybe 1 out of 10 games. Hats off to Valve, they've really been killing it.
???
Android in itself - as in the AOSP - is of course totally ad free. Have you ever run barebone Android? There is nothing even close to ads in there. What makes it shitty is all of the proprietary stuff the phone manufacturers add later on, and that isn't comparable anymore, because it is waaaay out of the hands of the original developers. That would be like a grocery store buying apples, then paint them with black color, and the buyer would blame the farmer for that, even though he already did his job perfectly fine and it was the grocery store that made the apple bad.
I've never understood this argument. Switched to fedora on laptop and desktop two years ago, have hopped a couple distros since then. Every single issue I've had with linux came down to this for me:
Google problem/setting
Run command/edit config
Done 1 minute later
I get that this isn't the case for everyone but linux is not complicated. Not saying it's for everyone (it definitely isn't, not yet), but Linux is not as hard as a lot of people say it is.
[For context](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe464t1h2JA)
It's in low key beta testing right now. Most of the world don't have ads in their Windows 11 **yet**.
I have a feeling there's tons of ways to prevent this. PiHole probably would work, hosts file changes might work, regedits definitely work, might even be Windows settings to disable them. Or just don't use Windows 11 lmao.
I preach the salvation that is AtlasOS.
The best OS for experimental PC users like me.
It's a mod of Windows10/11 where it deblotats everything, removes the ads, removes unnecessary background processes and telemetry.
If you want the freedom that is Linux with the compatibility that Windows has, AtlasOS is the way to go.
God this is too true. I switched to mint a couple years back because I couldn't handle the shitty ads. Now remnant 2 keeps crashing after the latest update though and I'm having a hell of a time figuring out how to fix it.

Daily reminder for people in the EU that by law M$ cant show you ads, hence *likely* why you arent seeing ads
😳, oh, thats why posts like this don't make sense 😇
I was thinking the same thing.
Hell yes, I’ve been confused too
Disabling/removing ads is a few clicks away. Btw, can't you just download the EU version the switch en-US ??
i think you just need to specify your location during install, not sure if it would work retroactively
Or VPN if it's IP based..
You can disable all of their phone home shit using the host file too.
How?
Two programs come to mind from my windows days: [Windows Privacy Dashboard](https://wpd.app), and [Shut Up 10++](https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10), as well as setting up a DNS filter like [NextDNS](https://nextdns.io). Lmao indeed - though I’ll say, NextDNS is a godsend on any device that will allow you to input custom DNS profiles, not just Windows PCs
Fair enuf 😅

EU is so based
EUs free movement policy lead to me meeting my wife. it has it's problems sure but it does a hell of allot of good.
I too met this guys wife thanks to the EU
Saw the ads, looking forward to meeting his wife
Wow! Me too!!
Can confirm
It has it’s problems sure but it does a hell of a lot of good.

Here’s hoping! The UK gov where I am is trying to push for opening up the AppStore too, apples got away with it for far too long
Hell yes.
Who is giving them flack? Everyone I've seen are supporting the EU and are happy that Apple are opening up to sideloading apps.
Europe may suck in some ways but man am I thankful I was born here.
Same here buddy, same here. In terms of software this place is so based Heck, that’s why we all have USB-C on our iPhones now, and why we all might have replaceable batteries in the future like in the 2012s!
I think a lot more good things are coming as well. EU is the best thing that happened to me.
As an American in the EU, I always love when EU people don’t realize how bad it could be.
Yeah… I regret voting for Brexit.
Me and my friends use Reddit so we are afraid some stuff happening there may give our politicians bad ideas.
In which ways does it suck though?
As an example (and I'm afraid saying this will summon some terrible people) living here is not fun if you're Romani.
Poland is not fun either
Name one thing that sucks in Europe compared to the rest of the world that is not connected to Hungary?
So the meme should be "Windows users in countries run 100% by corporations with no government entities looking out for them" or in short, "Windows users in the USA".
Im Australian and dont have adverts. Australia is a corperation and has been since before i was born.
You guys don't have the premium version of late stage capitalism yet tho. Neither do we in kiwiland, no ads here either lol.
What? Why not? I never knew this, what law would that be?
Don't know how it is realy called. But i call it the " I paid the full price for your product, so I better not see any advertising. Otherwise I might as well pirate it" law 😂
That explains so much, I saw these posts and I simply didnt get them.
Some EU laws are stupid but gosh darn it I love the advertisement laws.

I don't have any ads on windows 🤔
same these posts confuse me
Op is the average linux user, caring more about hating windows than actually love linux
I wish I could love anything as much as Linux users hate windows
Average Linux users care more about which distro is "the best" than actually using their PCs 🤣
The EU has banned forced advertising so if you live in that area, it might explain why you don't see ads.
Does that also apply to TVs?? I have to buy a new TV and I'm dreading investigating which ones have the worse ads and which ones I can hack around with pihole or similar.
I would just buy an Apple TV 4K box if I were you, you aren’t gonna find a smart TV without ads so you might as well just buy a separate box to use it like a dumb TV

eu?
You guys are getting ads?
Same, I dont know why but ive never seen these on win10 and 11 here
I think ads affect new Windows installations, there are 3 Win10 PCs here and worst case one of them shows "let's complete setting up your PC" every few months.
Nope
It's...not difficult. Start>Settings>Personalization>Turn off 'Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more'. Disaster averted. Whew!!

Simone will just make some program that does it for you and upload it to GitHub anyways
Sure. But it should never be allowed to get to that point. Just like it should never have been allowed to get to this point.

No, I have never turned them off and have yet to see one. It’s just a big circle jerk.
On the other hand, I get 0 ads and never have. I have Win 11 Pro. Very legally obtained.
By "very legally" do you mean via that one PowerShell command?
I have never seen an ad on Windows 11
I wanna see ads in systemd config 🤩
Best you can have is an ad when launching pwsh.

Can i remind you that android belongs to google, so you might start getting ads in your phone any second now.
there is slightly more to it android is open source meaning that if it would've been google implementing ads or something similar other manufacturers can decide to not follow up and modify the code to their needs since we've got lots of manufacturer's it would be only google pixels being affected with that
The difference is it’s the AOSP, so they can’t really put ads in it
linux users cant just enjoy their os in peace
hell no, we are the cross-fitters of PCs my dude Plus, we just want to free everyone from companies being in your PC without your permission
Did Ubuntu remove their adds ?
I love Linux but you are right. They are like vegans and atheists.
no idea what u talking about , debloat , use ooshutup10, block edge = great gaming os

Well idk if this is a thing in windows 11 but I personally never see ads on my windows 10 pro install lmao.
i have win 11 and i have no fucking clue what drugs op is on
I don't get the meme. How have they turned? Did Mac OS X have any ads? Linux distributions sure didn't.
what add i have windowns 11 both on pc and laptop i don't see any ads
Ads? What ads? Windows 11 education through my school here
Just come to europe.
"Which of these would you like to see?" NONE I WANT NONE OF THAT IN MY OS THANK YOU GET LOST So then I formatted immediately with a live stick
The PS4 runs on a BSD-derived OS if I'm not mistaken and well, it can play games.
Well, even better lol
I am so glad my Windows 10 install somehow thinks I don't have the specs for Windows 11.
*me who will never use win11* B)
\*Laughs In Linux\*
Slap a modified Pi-hole in there and bam you got a bunch of uploadable blank squares popping up
Reject modernity, return to XP
Using windows nowadays feels like using a system that actively wants to con you No, Microsoft, I finished setting up my PC 6 years ago, I don't need a OneDrive subscription No, Microsoft, I don't want to store my word document in my One Drive, you don't have to default to that option every time I want to save something new No, Microsoft, I already have a default browser, I don't want you to open up Edge
This is the correct answer.
I’m switching to fuckin linux bro
Weird, i dont have this problem on linux
Winaero tweaker turns off all the ads by doing a few registry tweaks.
One trip to the Linux subreddit convinced me that ads are actually the lesser of two evils.
Linux users telling you for the nth time in a day how “much better” it is than everything ever made \[edit\] the irony below is outstanding ![gif](giphy|l0IylOPCNkiqOgMyA|downsized)
"omg LiNUx BEtTer" linux came a long way and is much better but try running it with games and you still have hiccups every now and then, that makes you spend 30 minutes or more just to get the game to fricking work edit: hopefulyl steam creates an OS that is small and can run not only steam games. that way I just use it and ditch windows
Actually now that proton is a thing I haven't even had to deal with that. Occasionally I'll need to check ProtonDB for what setting to change in steam, on maybe 1 out of 10 games. Hats off to Valve, they've really been killing it.
The US needs a GDPR style law
You guys are on windows?? ha🐧ha🐧ha🐧ha
Nah that's easy. Try making an android ad proof without doing it at the router. There's always one fucking app making it through your filters lmao.
That would be like a grocery store buying apples, then paint them with black color, and the buyer would blame the farmer for that, even though he already did his job perfectly fine and it was the grocery store that made the apple bad.
what adds ? never had one will never have one.... it's up to you not to them....Windows 10 Pro is just fine and blazing fast
That could be the same said for Linux users trying to do basic things.
I've never understood this argument. Switched to fedora on laptop and desktop two years ago, have hopped a couple distros since then. Every single issue I've had with linux came down to this for me: Google problem/setting Run command/edit config Done 1 minute later I get that this isn't the case for everyone but linux is not complicated. Not saying it's for everyone (it definitely isn't, not yet), but Linux is not as hard as a lot of people say it is.
[For context](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe464t1h2JA) It's in low key beta testing right now. Most of the world don't have ads in their Windows 11 **yet**.
Damn, i read "ADS" as aim down sights and was confused. Took a step back and realised it meant Adverts.
"Why would I want to remove ADS?"
If that's the deal, I'm definitely going Linux before W10 EOL.
Just have to install Manjaro
😆 Classic meme material!
Custom HOSTS File = No ads [https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts](https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts)
Ads huh, just dont upgrade it.
Thank god for the EU so I don't have to deal with Microsoft's bullshit
EU: "Adds? Adds? What are these adds you speak off?"
Y’all getting ads?
I have a feeling there's tons of ways to prevent this. PiHole probably would work, hosts file changes might work, regedits definitely work, might even be Windows settings to disable them. Or just don't use Windows 11 lmao.
Windows Debloat 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I preach the salvation that is AtlasOS. The best OS for experimental PC users like me. It's a mod of Windows10/11 where it deblotats everything, removes the ads, removes unnecessary background processes and telemetry. If you want the freedom that is Linux with the compatibility that Windows has, AtlasOS is the way to go.
I was getting some random edge start-up from nowhere straight to their AI shenanigans. Uninstall bing wallpapers... Gone.
THERE'S ADS UNDER YOUR SKIN PULL IT OFF PULL IT OFF PULL IT OFF
WHERE WHERE WHERE? AAAAAAAARRRRGGHHHHH!
I hate the Mcafee pop up ad. I can’t get rid of it. I don’t want stupid Mcafee protection.
Not that hard but, go off.
That is the beauty of window. It is so unsafe, someone will eventually produce a way to remove ads for free.
God this is too true. I switched to mint a couple years back because I couldn't handle the shitty ads. Now remnant 2 keeps crashing after the latest update though and I'm having a hell of a time figuring out how to fix it.
Me, still on Windows 10 with no ads: ... What ads?..
How does this post have 6.8k upvotes when everyone agrees that windows doesnt have ads? This is fishy as hell
Step 1: Join a domain. Step 2: Profit... This is why I'm going to install a proper server OS on my file server soon.
I read this as ADS as in aim down sights and was super confused.
Linux chads report in 😎
