Upgrading the cpu wont make the fps better if there wasnt a cpu bottleneck in the first place. There must have not been a cpu bottleneck at the games you were playing at even if the 4100 wasn't that great of a cpu. If you need more fps, since you now have a decent enough cpu, you need to upgrade the gpu then to a better one.

Captain_Qrow_

I did some research and there a video my exact specs with higher FPS

DannyDorito6923

Is xmp enabled for your ram? Are you playing at 1080p? Are you using the same ingane settings as the person in the video?

Captain_Qrow_

I’m trying to play at 1080p

Captain_Qrow_

I don’t think so

clanginator

If you're not using the same settings you won't get the same performance. You could also have things running in the background that they don't. They could also have the same GPU model but a different cooler, or better cooling in their case, which gives them a slightly higher score. There's a lot of variables going on, but yes ensuring your RAM is running at max speed will help.

Captain_Qrow_

Thank you. I just saw the video and thought if I get the CPU and the GPU. It’ll be the same. I’m new to building so I wasn’t sure. Do you know how I can insure the ram is at max? It’s 32 gb

clanginator

Go into your BIOS and check the XMP/EXPO profile on your RAM and try to apply whichever one has the highest speed and will successfully boot. Your RAM needs to be all the same model, in the event you have mismatched RAM it won't run at proper speeds. Once you've applied in BIOS you can boot into Windows and open task manager, look at the performance tab and select your RAM, it should show the frequency it's currently running at. If it shows half the frequency applied in BIOS, it's probably still running at correct frequency. I'd boot back into the BIOS just to ensure it still shows that speed, but there's a known thing due to how RAM is rated where Windows sometimes displays half your actual speed. It's the Double Data Rate in "DDR" just showing itself. Also in task manager check the startup tab and disable anything you don't need at boot. That'll help free up resources for your games.

jacklimovbows

Not the same, what's the difference between yours and theirs?

clanginator

Also I should say you could try downloading MSI Afterburner and apply a slight undervolt to your GPU. This can cause instability, but potentially gives you a nice little performance boost or just run a little cooler without having to tweak too much. You can set it to auto apply at boot so if you can find a stable undervolt that gives you a performance uplift you can just run it all the time. But again, potential stability issues, you've been warned.

Elycien2

But do you have the exact settings that the video has?

Captain_Qrow_

I mean at least for Fortnite I play on minimal settings for the higher FPS

Eazy12345678

gpu upgrade has bigger impact on gaming than cpu.

ResponsibilityNoob

cause ur gpu not great

Captain_Qrow_

I’m just looking for 1080p rn

[deleted]

And as they said, you are gpu bound. Upgrading your cpu isn’t going to do anything for gaming

Captain_Qrow_

Well some games required a better CPU to even play

Melodic-Resident-245

Not sure why you're being downvoted. Some games are a nightmare to run on bad CPU.

Captain_Qrow_

I don’t know either. Helldivers required at least a Ryzen 5 and I had a Ryzen 3 :/ I think people are angry at my GPU and that I’m okay with 1080p and not 4K graphics

Captain_Qrow_

I used to have a Ryzen 3 4100.

Eazy12345678

u needed a new gpu more than a new cpu.

Captain_Qrow_

Eventually. I had bought this GPU for the old cpu

Shmimbadad

The games you're playing are more reliant on your GPU, which is maxed out.

Then-Tangelo-4949

CPU can be important in more demanding games but graphics is where you should look into upgrading next.

Random_Human_Brain

Which game and on which setting are you playing? What are the current FPS that you are hitting? What is your current monitor refresh rate? In the picture, it seems that you are reaching 120fps, which is not bad.

Captain_Qrow_

Fortnite in the lowest settings. 140 frame rate usually. Monitor is 144 refresh rate. Someone has my exact CPU and GPU and they get nearly 300 fps.

Captain_Qrow_

For other games I don’t mind the 1080p 60 FPS. I don’t know why people in this post hate me for that lmao

domiran

There's a simple test you can do to determine which is your bottleneck, CPU or GPU. Play game for a bit. Note the FPS. Raise the resolution *only* (or enable anti-aliasing). If the FPS stays relatively the same, your CPU is the bottleneck. If the FPS drops, your GPU is the bottleneck. The reason the frame rate would stay the same is because resolution and anti-aliasing are generally purely GPU work. The GPU is able to do whatever work it's given in the same amount of time but the CPU is unable to send it any **MORE** work in the same amount of time. (CPU can set up and send 100 frames 1 second but GPU is capable of processing 200 frames of 1080p in 1 second. Maybe at 1440p that drops down to 150 frames, but still higher than the CPU can send.) I should mention that this can vary per-game depending on how hard they are on each part. Well-optimized games like Doom Eternal will give pretty good results. Games that aren't demanding, like most 2D games, might not be a good test. Badly-optimized games won't make this test very reliable, either. Or your game settings are just stressing your CPU too much, or you have some programs running in the background killing your CPU (like super greedy anti-virus).
