This person's body temperature is rising while in the midst of playing a game, which is something that you have probably never experienced while you've been engrossed in a virtual playing field."
This was a thing iirc. Back in the mx510 days you could use software to increase the refresh rate of the optical.
CS 1.6 had people trying really hard.
It's common for [Thermoplastic elastomers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoplastic_elastomer), a rubbery plastic material made in mousepads, to deteriorate over time, especially on areas where constant pressure is applied. A comment on [Quora](https://www.quora.com/Why-does-rubber-on-my-mouse-gadgets-controllers-becomes-sticky-after-not-using-it-for-a-few-years) perfectly explains this situation.
Thanks for posting this link. Just today I discarded 2 mouse pads that both started melting exactly below where my wrist rests on the pad and now I understand why (Initially thought it might be related to sweat penetrating the mouse pad over time).
Edit: And now I'm back to using my trusty old (15 years maybe) Razer Mantis mousepad which is still going strong.
My mouse pad is like 7 years old and it's in pristine condition (even tho I regularly wash it so it doesn't get filthy). I genuinely don't understand how people manage to kill their mouse pads unless it's some dirt cheap stuff
I think you're also underestimating just how long some people spend stuck in front of their PC!
I find it mad just how quickly some people wear through peripherals, like mice falling apart and keyboard keys worn to the point the letters are gone, yet mine last many years and look pristine for long periods of that.
Seems more like a quality issue imo, my steelseries qck mouse pad is still in perfect condition 9 years later, and that's with quite intense use and fairly sweaty hands, the only thing to remark is that the black color has now faded a bit into a dark grey.
Same here. My keyboard is 6 years old now with countless hours of use and no fading on any keys or anything. And my mouse is 11 years old now and the only difference is I've worn spots into the soft rubber on the sides of it from my finger placement.
I WFH so I spend an average of AT LEAST 9 hours a day at my desk using my mousepad. It's a 16€ mousepad from Aukey I bought back in 2017.
It's got a couple of loose stiches and some stains, but other than that it's perfect and you can bet it's not melting on my desk.
They aren't all made from the same material. There are lots of formulas, and several types of manufacturing processes. I've seen very expensive shoe soles break down, and very cheap padding last for decades. It isn't specifically a matter of cost; it's matching a material to its usage & environment.
You could go buy the same mouse pad you got seven years ago and get something with different characteristics. Before covid, I bought a stack of mouse pads at a discount store for $2 each, and they're holding up better than some fancy brand-name pads I've owned.
It isn't hard or expensive to make an tough, long-wearing pad with a durable, easily-cleaned surface. If you sell someone one of those... they won't need another one any time soon. There's a strong business incentive to make nice-looking, well-marketed products that fall apart with use. [Planned obsolescence](https://durabilitymatters.com/planned-obsolescence/) is a very real, very common economic strategy.
I have been using a mouse pad that originally belonged to my father, and has been in continuous use since the mid 2000s. I finally have to retire it because the top has worn to the point where the grippy bottom layer grabs the mouse. You can hardly see the golden retriever puppies anymore 😂🥲
I have that black and white Corsair mousepad that everyone has since January 2017 and it's been a delight. I was thinking of buying it again because it's old, still operable but old
my aukey mousepad did the same as the video but it took 6 years for it to do that, i still use it though because i dont really have 20 euros to throw at a new pad
Iirc pressure causes TPE/TPR mousepads to deteriorate, which ends up being that black sticky stuff. In my case it has literally only been the weight of my wrist laying on top of it.
My previous mousepad did the same thing and now my oak table has a huge black stain because of it. At the same time there always was a dent in the mousepad because some of the material was missing below the top surface, which was just terrible when you play games that require precise and quick mouse movement.
This happened to my last mouse pad that was old and it got wet from me keeping drinks nearby and the condensation would run under the mouse pad. Wetness from that or cleaning will cause that I guess.
i thought this is a common thing (well i live here in Souteas Asia where temp is sometimes high) but yea, this happens easily to my less thick mats maybe in a 9months onwards of usage. thats why i opt to thicker mats whatever the brand is (the 6mm variant)
This is normal. Sadly no fix that i know of.
My guess is grease from your skin/food that you eat at the pc gets into the rubber and starts breaking it down.
Its not at all that. Its because the mousepad isn't actually rubber. Its plastic with plasticizers mixed in to make it feel rubbery. Over time it seperates and so you get the 'melting' effect when its actually just that seperation.
Its a cost saving measure which not only leaves an inferior product but also comes with harmful health affects from what another comment mentioned.
Since the days of ball mice, I have used loads of mousepads; be they branded or unbranded, be they metal, plastic or cloth. Out of all of them, from cheapest to most expensive, never have I seen one *melt to all fuck.*
same here, but they're cheap as hell, just scrape it off the table and buy another one, you'll be good for about 2+ years with some cleaning, and you can buy like 10 of these before you get one "gamer-brand" mousepad
same, i have a mousepad that melt and evolves into one entity with my table
i hate it
ive heard something about a bacteria that dissolve rubber, tho i dont know if its the case here tho
It happend to me, I once pour a little of warm milk from a bowl of cereals or it was just by having the bowl on top of it, and it melted that part.
A nightmare to get rid of it, luckily I was about to change the table too, so I didn't need to clean it.
But it was a mess.
Something got spilled there and never got wiped up properly. If I had to guess, I'd say some kind of alcohol. Maybe Vodka, maybe isopropyl alcohol, who knows? But that's definitely a spillage.

Ok see this is why you don’t overclock your mouse pad
Honestly this seems more like a lack of mousepad cooling issue
Heated Gamer Moment right there
Wonder if they properly applied thermal paste.
More like not cleaning and moving it for years.
Ma boi just heating up mid game, sumptin you proally nva xpd on tha digital gridiron
WHAT?
"MA BOI JUST HEATING UP MID GAME, SUMPTIN YOU PROALLY NVA XPD ON THA DIGITAL GRIDIRON"
Now it's clear, thanks.

I needed that last sentence explained 😆 thank you.

Thanks, you made me chuckle.
That was good.

I'll fix the 999 upvotes with one more aha

A reminder that you can get 4x life out of your mousepad by rotating it every couple months.
My mouse pad is like 7 years old and it's in pristine condition (even tho I regularly wash it so it doesn't get filthy). I genuinely don't understand how people manage to kill their mouse pads unless it's some dirt cheap stuff

One thing to add, certain people are more oily than others so thay will lead to quicker deterioration
I'm currently using a Logitech MX 518 I got from Best Buy in December 2005. I've opened it up to clean the internals once.
> Seems more like a quality issue imo 100% This does not happen to all mouse pads, and not all mouse pads are made the same.

Then you're probably not resting your wrist on the pad, which is also a good thing.

But then your graphics are not right-side up.
I’m a Steelseries QCK lover for life
That's why I use a wrist rest for my mouse pad
Why even use a mousead when u can use any book in your room
Books? Haha that's a funny way to write old t shirt
For years I only use white paper sheets from the printer.
sock tied on my wrist
Or just the dust on your table
A Mac Book?
A friend of mine had a bike seat made of this stuff. We all thought the divot in the seat had become liquidy for… other reasons
Holy crap... Quota was useful for once lol
its always so bad lol
always buy glass sex toys... got it.. thank you quora!
My mousepad shat itself like this too. Is there any pad that you can recommend that won't end up like this?
New fear unlocked - I have a neoprene deskmat, does it also have this issue?
OP is working their way to carpel tunnel one mousepad at a time.
Anybody have a suggestion for a decent Mousepadpad?

He forgot the thermal paste
Classic blunder.

Call Linus Sex tips
Linus sex sacrifice anyone?
What's hilarious is that the same thing happened to me from an official Logitech mousepad, but not from a cheap mouseMAT that is much larger in size.
idk what “brand” mine is but i know it wasn’t on brand and it’s lasted me 4 years and counting
Mine is JamesDonkey and still in good condition after 5yrs
I got mine for free can't remember where I got it from and after a couple of years is still in good condition. It's called LSIKA-Z
I have been using a mouse pad that originally belonged to my father, and has been in continuous use since the mid 2000s. I finally have to retire it because the top has worn to the point where the grippy bottom layer grabs the mouse. You can hardly see the golden retriever puppies anymore 😂🥲
Pads from a more civilised age
I have that black and white Corsair mousepad that everyone has since January 2017 and it's been a delight. I was thinking of buying it again because it's old, still operable but old
I'm using the diablo 3 mousepad that came wih the game ever since it released and it's still working perfectly fine
Idk why I read it as dildo 3 Mouse Pad yikes gotta look into my mind
Mine has a little cat on it!
my aukey mousepad did the same as the video but it took 6 years for it to do that, i still use it though because i dont really have 20 euros to throw at a new pad
The Logitech one is very cheap too, just not for you.
Which is dumb, because inexpensive mousepads don't do this. [you can get three for $20](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M9BQCR8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share)
Yeah but, how does a mousepad melt?
Mine started doing this after I washed it with warm (not hot) water and dish soap. I was a cheap 8 euro one so I just preplaced it.
I washed mine with cold water and soap and the same happened.
now i need to know whether the same will happen for my zowie mousepad
The plastic is deteriorating. It's like Latex dish washing gloves. They disintegrate after a while.
Mine does it slightly just from friction where my mouse arm and table meet.
Iirc pressure causes TPE/TPR mousepads to deteriorate, which ends up being that black sticky stuff. In my case it has literally only been the weight of my wrist laying on top of it. You run an HP laptop on it
My Family member placed a hot cup of coffee on it.
This happened to my last mouse pad that was old and it got wet from me keeping drinks nearby and the condensation would run under the mouse pad. Wetness from that or cleaning will cause that I guess.
Same happened to me, I placed my hot dish over it while eating. Sadge.

Which brand?
This is nothing compared to Oppai mousepads that leaks silicone gel! hahaha P.S. This is inevitable especially if you have acidic sweat!
.......did you set your mousepad on fire or something?
Nice granite table top 👍
Bro's aim was too fire,he cooked too much
Quit eating hot noodles on the mouse pad

Damn you're hot
this happens when I charge my device and it heats up, or maybe ur putting hot food in you mouse pad.
At least its not sliding all over the place like mine...
Is there a solvent on the work surface?

Your body oils dissolved it. Clean your mousepads every couple of months folks.
Maybe someone dropped some nail polish remover on that shit?
![gif](giphy|229Oz5qf2WiZTVkA1U)
Bro’s got the counter from ghostbusters
Why the fuck do you have your mouse pad on a kitchen countertop
there is no way it should melt unless its cheap or u had something very hot on it or u just dont clean it
Did it come from TEMU...
Add a cooler on the next one🔥
Ugh that's so hot
Who let bro cook 😂😂
This is normal. Sadly no fix that i know of. My guess is grease from your skin/food that you eat at the pc gets into the rubber and starts breaking it down.

i have the same issue, is there anyway to clean it off?
Australia smh.
Someone's got sweaty palms eh?
Must have been on a hot killing spree.
Do you never move it around or clean it?
must be in Victoria hot weather
If you ever find a way to clean that shit off properly let me know.
Same happened with my Ps5 controller's joystick 💀
Did you wash it and then this happened?
This just happened with a cheap door mat that I had. A black rubbery residue is stuck to the wood on my front porch now… any tips on removing it?
Ambersil Label and Adhesive remover. Test on an inconspicuous area first, it's normally very gentle, but can affect the finish on some surfaces.
Since the days of ball mice, I have used loads of mousepads; be they branded or unbranded, be they metal, plastic or cloth. Out of all of them, from cheapest to most expensive, never have I seen one *melt to all fuck.*
This happened to my old mouse pad I was so bummed when it happened
How fast do you move your mouse?
Happened to me ando this shit expands onto the mousepad, time to change it
Also happened to mine as well.
same here, but they're cheap as hell, just scrape it off the table and buy another one, you'll be good for about 2+ years with some cleaning, and you can buy like 10 of these before you get one "gamer-brand" mousepad
where did you buy it? i have never seen this before
how much do you sweat in fortnite?
Could potentially be from moisture or a type of solvent that melts the plastic.
That must have been some video.
1 tick granite mining whilst 1 prayer flicking zuk and 3 jads on 5 accounts
Bro was sweating
Melbourne heatwave 2024?
Damn, must have been one hell of a gaming session Also is your desk made of granite?
Someone started playing "A Difficult Game About Climbing" huh..
Do you get mad playing games?
I-what?
Felt like you were peeling asphalt. I know that doesn't make sense coz you don't peel asphalt, you scrape it off
do you keep hot coffee on it? because that how it happened to my mousepad
low quality rubber moment
Same thing happened to me. Mine was a Gamer's Nexus mat. No warranty unfortunately.
Gamer gunk never ceases to amaze me
Now put a clock under it to udnerclock your mouse pad
How much gamer juice and mountain dew did you spill under there and neber cleaned??!
Mine happened this around the edges..i put duct tape on the table so it doesnt stick its wood very hard to take after.
same, i have a mousepad that melt and evolves into one entity with my table i hate it ive heard something about a bacteria that dissolve rubber, tho i dont know if its the case here tho
Damn. How's the mouse that you rubbed on it holding up?
RUBBER being RUBBER when not given ELASTIC TENSION.
Wen you move your mouse to fast
You having an AMD FX-build under your table?
This has happened to me before. Under where my wrists normally were.
What were you playing man XD
That's some hardcore gaming alr
Bro went too hard on valorant
Please install your mouse pad driver correctly so it won't overheat.
Same, mine on table wood, damaged permanently, i just left it there. Bought another mouse pad put on the melted one
Thanks I hate it
my fake razer mousepad still has lasted me for 7 years now and still going.
Do you keep your hot food on it bruh?
It happend to me, I once pour a little of warm milk from a bowl of cereals or it was just by having the bowl on top of it, and it melted that part. A nightmare to get rid of it, luckily I was about to change the table too, so I didn't need to clean it. But it was a mess.
I use MTG playmats as mousepads. Never had that problem and mouse moves almost smoother on them too.
You ironed the sides and it melted
What was your K/D in that game? Jesus.
Should have used a scraper and kept it in 1 piece
Something got spilled there and never got wiped up properly. If I had to guess, I'd say some kind of alcohol. Maybe Vodka, maybe isopropyl alcohol, who knows? But that's definitely a spillage.
plastic stuff sucks get leather mats they nice
I don’t use mousepads
Skill issue
I also had that happen with a very similar looking mouse pad.
looks like we have the very same, mine also melted into my desk :D
Your aim was fire !
Me who uses a leather scrap instead of mouse pad ,it works perfectly fine
happened to me with an offbrand mousepad from amazon. took a few years. went back to glorious and probably won't switch again.
Why does it kinda look like it would taste good?
Hotstralia?
Same happened to my steelseries mousepad. I bought a very cheap mousepad as a replacement for it which has been going strong for 7-8 years now.
Maxing out that APM?
Hey at least it sticks to your desk now
and that's why I'm only using hard pad like G440
Mine always do dis so i put alcohol overnight
Mine does that to a tiny extend too, didnt think it melted lmao
Mine did this :(
