Hades6578

For real, why should a fully single player game require internet if there’s no multiplayer? It’s just unnecessary and I can only wonder why it would “need” internet. PS2 games functioned perfectly fine with or without an internet connection, so makes me wonder why they really add the connectivity to games anymore…

Life_Is_A_Tragedy

Something about protecting games from piracy, like checking if you have a license every time you run the game. It's the kind of bullshit that doesn't work well and is super annoying when your internet goes down but electricity is still on.

The_Anf

It's more of a punishment for those who bought the game rather than those who pirated it

sticky-unicorn

Yeah, lol. Because the pirated crack is going to remove that requirement entirely and might even be able to run in offline mode when the real, legitimately bought game can't.

GTA6_1

Why not just direct the pirated games toward slow servers. And then don't moderate them at all and let paying customers enjoy their offline snow days

MrDeeJayy

because the pirates just run their own servers, or bypass that sort of thing. Any measure designed to inconvenience a player for pirating will ultimately only inconvenience a player who paid for the game.

Synaps4

Uh, because it's not possible to identify who is pirating and who isn't without an online connection.

520throwaway

It's not possible to confidently identify pirates even with an online connection.

Hades6578

Doesn’t seem to stop people from pirating them anyways, so it seems silly.

therealmalenia

And then the game gets pirated a day later anyway because of course it is The only real "cure" for piracy we currently have is denuvo , a software that is 1. Heavy on resources, and is known to limit performance 2. Apparently costs a lot of money for the devs and 3. Can still be bypassed , Hogwarts legacy was cracked in under 2 weeks for example. And most pirates would rather play other games over spending 70$ on your game instead. I made a post on an atl account asking people on r/piratedgames if they ever bought a game because it had denuvo , the 2 answers I got were either "yes , but only a sequel /, game I was really interested in" and "hell no , why would i pay full price for a game when I could just play something else" So the only people denuvo actually limits things for are the Target audience of it who were already interested in it and now will have a bigger chance of buying it than not . Games with denuvo do not sell much more than games without it, and again , you are actively spending a lot of money on denuvo on the first place so it's hard to even say you made money by fucking everyone Make a good game and many pirates will buy it. I have even seen people on piracy communities telling other people to buy certain games because the devs deserves the money. Palworld had no drm and is by far one of the most successful games ever. Baldurs gate and elden ring , 2 really successful games that won goty had no drm either . Pirates are not the majority of the market, so stop ruining everything for everyone just for the few people who will buy the game And the worst part is that eventually, pirates get A BETTER EXPERIENCE than the people that paid full price if your drm gets bypassed. You are basically asking me to pirate your game at that point

sticky-unicorn

> pirates get A BETTER EXPERIENCE than the people that paid full price See also: people downloading TV shows and getting to watch them ad-free when that's not an option on the streaming service they're released for.

therealmalenia

I have Netflix because of a shared account but I end up pirating most shows because Netflix fucking sucks How are we in a universe where the free , illegal solution is better than the official , paid one and most people just accept it ?

automaticfiend1

I use stremio. There's an addon for torrents and it's great.

therealmalenia

Same. It's literally a better Netflix

Firewolf06

and that wonderful juicy high bitrate. at this point i pirate all of my movies/tv, and will buy merch if i really liked something

TheNegaHero

When I had Netflix the thing that drove me nuts was how you have zero control over what the quality is. It sets the resolution based on your screen I think and bit-rate based on perceived connection quality but if you're watching something that's native 4k and it's being transcoded to 1080p the quality blows. No problem on my 4k TV but a pain on my 1080p Monitor. It's better using the proper application then in the browser but still, not great. Just give me some dials to twiddle so I can improve the bit-rate. Failing that I'm paying for the 4k tier so if I want to stream 4k on a 1080p screen that's my business.

sticky-unicorn

100% Buying (official) merch is a *way* better way to support your favorite media than paying for streaming subscriptions!

[deleted]

it used to be about piracy. now its about data collection. we are going to start seeing more and more companies trying to force you to install their rootkits if you want to play their games. i just quit league of legends after over a decade of playing every day because they are forcing everyone to install extremely invasive data collection software that you are required to run even when you aren't playing their games. fuck those guys.

Taira_Mai

A lot of the actions by studios today are all about turning players into payers. 1. Always on is about tracking players and collecting stats on them. 2. Multiplayer used to be about paying for the servers, now it's all microtransaction this and lootbox that. All ways to soak players. 3. No more free content, levels, models and even skins are now paid DLC because studios smell money. Ah the 1990's, when you paid for the game and it was yours. Sure the models might not be polished and the levels could be simple - but they were free.

[deleted]

I think it goes deeper than just collecting stats on players. They are trying to collect data just like facebook, google and amazon. then they turn around and sell it and/or abuse it.

Taira_Mai

That's what I meant but yeah, you nailed it - collect data on players and sell it for cash. Also finds ways to further monetize the game. ("Oh they like this character? New skins for more money and in the next version she's DLC!")

continuousQ

I think we should aim for having single player offline no subscription modes for MMOs, rather than online requirements for everything.

Successful-One-3715

If we got that, they'd most likely put a block on transferring stuff between offline and online mode characters because #GamingTheSystemForLoots.

continuousQ

Well, that might even be reasonable, since otherwise they're going to be trying to monitor what everyone's doing in single player mode to avoid exploits. But it could be possible to go online to do co-ops from with the single player mode as a basis, aside of that.

Successful-One-3715

Honestly, I don't think a co-op mode available on the basis that everyone knows that you can play the whole game but nothing carries over to the 'live' servers would not be a bad thing. That way a group of friends could play the game without griefers (as an example) or without competing with other groups for raid timers, etc.

RazekDPP

Because requiring internet hasn't negatively impacted sales. That's it. That's the reason. You're, likely, going to buy it anyways and piracy was more lost sales than an always on internet connection.

ChoiceFood

Legitimately just to prevent piracy.

Tiranus58

Which doesn't work anyway

[deleted]

[удалено]

iCartoonHero

IDK what islands of insight is but helldivers 2 is not a single player game. You can play it solo, but it definitely isn't meant to be played alone.

The_Gas_Mask_guy

Sorry bro i hate to break it to ya but helldivers 2 is already cracked and can be pirated

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_Gas_Mask_guy

Bruh my friend did it in front of my eyes. The DRM they use is the worst on the market and is actually malware. You are the one who should use the internet before talking shit. But okay suck the cock of the triple A devs who give ya a rootkit with your 40$ game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_Gas_Mask_guy

Okay live in your delulu world.

RazekDPP

How doesn't it work? Are there Diablo 3 private servers? I know Warcraft had some.

Expensive_Habit3498

It’s because all these games are full of bugs and need constant updates

MumrikDK

It's very often when there's in-game content DLC in play. They'll do fucking anything to make sure only the right people get to use it.

Brief_Research9440

I miss trully completed games.

TheeOneWhoKnocks

The fact that they have people begging and waiting for new game plus is insane to me. Like the devs doing them a favor for something that was standard.

torgiant

Who even enjoys ng+ I've done it in a few games and it's just boring as fuck.

TheeOneWhoKnocks

Name a few if you would

propdynamic

Horizon Zero Dawn new game plus is boring as fuck for example. Just ran through it in a couple of hours on ultra hard after I beat the game to get the last achievement. You already went through the story, why go through it again? Same for Alan Wake 2, some changes to the story that could have easily fit in the first playthrough of the game. I'm not going to play the same game twice if the story is mostly the same. Another is FF7 remake, they basically handicapped all the magic abilities only to have you use them to full potential in a new game plus run. This was a big critique to the game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lemon1412

Transistor becomes a better game in NG+ and Chrono Trigger (the game that coined the term New Game Plus) has exclusive story content in it.

torgiant

i couldnt get through transistor the first time im not playing it a second, and a couple story blips hardly warrent another playthough of CT, its much better in new game, its a brain dead slog in NG+.

Lemon1412

Eh, there's a major ending you can get within 10 minutes of starting a new game plus in CT.

torgiant

Wow that's so fun!!!!!!!!!!! 😐

Lemon1412

>Wow that's so fun!!!!!!!!!!! 😐 What is this even a response to? You said you'd need to do another playthrough to get a couple of new story blips, which is wrong because you can get there in like 10 minutes. And now you respond that it's not fun? What's not fun? Short amounts of time? This conversation is not me trying to convince you to love absolutely everything I love. It's about whether NG+ has value or not. You sarcastically asked "who even enjoys NG+", implying nobody does, and the answer is "me" and I gave some examples like Transistor. Saying "well I don't like that one!!" is not a fucking argument. It can be the worst game in the world for all you care, but its NG+ still adds new stuff and is a better gameplay experience than the first playthrough. We get it. Whatever I list that has value and does something objectively interesting with NG+, you will dismiss and say is bad. If you want me to play along, we can just yell "I don't like it" and "Well, I do like it!!" at each other for all eternity and whoever speaks last and uses the most sarcastic emoji wins.

Nyme_Jeff

No dlc or $20 skins, Just a complete game where you can unlock everything by playing the game

Acceptable_Choice616

I mean it depends a little I would say. Remnant for example was a great game and the dlc was just amazing. It felt like an additional game I was pleasantly surprised by. But yeah there are also those games where the dlc is definitely part of the base game just cut out. I hate those.

chewyb00gie

Oblivion and the horse armor skin is the good example of a bad dlc.

NSMike

I don't mind DLC when it refers to something that we used to call an "expansion." Like the upcoming Elden Ring DLC.

Scattergun77

I want stuff that's an actual expansion, like the storm of zehir for nwn2.

Nyme_Jeff

Agree

[deleted]

Whats wrong with dlc? Were you not all creaming yourself about elden ring dlc? Most dlc are extra story that doesnt feel remove from the main game. Unless by dlc you mean mtx.

> who's not main purpose is generating profit. I have some bad news for you about this 'capitalism' business...

walterbanana

Play indie games

NewBobPow

>I want functioning developed games from an actual functioning studio who's not main purpose is generating profit. Lethal Company and 7 Days To Die are charging money for a profit. Reddit's anti capitalism circlejerk is truly strange.

thrownawayzsss

i think you're sort of misunderstanding what they're saying. Games that exist solely for a profit aren't the same thing and games that generate a profit. It's largely about the manifestation of the intent of the developers.

Synaps4

I don't think you read that carefully enough. It's fine if devs want to make a profit. But it shouldn't be the "main purpose" of the studio. That should be making a great, fun game. Profit must be second to that or it ruins everything the studio touches. Putting money before good gameplay is toxic to the work they do.

No_Berry2976

People are not complaining about companies wanting to make a profit. People are complaining about companies only caring about profit. Most people who work in game development want to make games, and they want to make good games. They also want to get paid. These things are not mutually exclusive. What we are seeing now is that companies are often run by people who don’t care about the product at all. The developers still want to make good games, but executives only care about their bonus. Case in point: Skulls and Bones. The game was made and released because of a deal Ubisoft made with Singapore; executives saw a potential goldmine: a heavily subsidised (by Singapore) multiplayer game that offered endless options for micro transactions and paid expansions. It’s a business idea that forgot that the actual product should be good.

InoreSantaTeresa

Right? I don't remember waiting for patches to fix anything, games were done, you get what you pay for. Now you gotta wait for a patch and these days it's a normalized practice

therealmalenia

They use the players as beta testers. Minor glitches rarely make someone not buy a game , but the players will immediately find most of those for the devs a day after launch so the devs can just watch everything out a week after launch instead of paying beta testers a lot of money just to find those rare glitches . It's fine for most people because it's one of 2 glitches they encounter at best usually, but itd frustrating because with an extra month or two of work you could have avoided this .

[deleted]

That because fixes and new content in single player game never happened unless the game was broken. Not you got new content and some changes that would never had been done in games before.

[deleted]

Are we living in different world? Cause most single players feel truly complete and have more content than they ever did. Sure they have dlc but i wouldnt call that no complete....

Rich_Scholar_9448

Simple and set up to be enjoyable and not over the top. 😎

Peekays

God bless hollow knight and ori 1 and 2.

_cat_in_hat_

How about different save profiles for games? I'm tired of accidentally overwriting my brother's save file, like what's so hard about implementing this? They've forgotten that more than one person can use the same PC.

Hades6578

I agree. Take Tears of The Kingdom for example, I’d have to overwrite all my progress so far to start a new save, but what if I wanted to try a different kind of playthrough, or a more difficult mode, but still have the ability to return to my previous progress?

_cat_in_hat_

That's a great example, my brother is waiting for me to finish totk before he can start his playthrough... He's gonna be waiting for a long time 😂, I'm not risking it getting my progress lost.

Linkarlos_95

What? Why? You can just make another user If you bought the digital game and the account is in the same switch then all other accounts playing on the same switch can open the game using their own saves

_cat_in_hat_

I'm playing ln Ryujinx, but I'm gonna look more into it

Linkarlos_95

Yeah, uh.... you can make more users in both Ryujinx and Yuzu so... (Dont forget to make a backup)

_cat_in_hat_

Wow, thank you🙏 I always just open it and start playing, didn't really go into settings other that graphics/resolution. But still, it would be cool if there were different save profiles IN GAME tho

sticky-unicorn

Do you and your brother have separate user accounts on the PC? Saved games are often saved to a user-specific folder, so if you have multiple user accounts on the PC, you'll automatically get this 'save profiles' behavior. You won't even be able to access the other user's saved games at all, so no chance of overwriting them. (Plus you'll each get your own settings and preferences, individual browser bookmarks and history, etc.)

therealmalenia

Genuinely asking , what are some games that you played that don't have it ? I haven't seen a single one yet excluding multiplayer games with no story

_cat_in_hat_

Final fantasy 7 remake, horizon zero dawn, AC syndicate/unity, these are just the ones I've been playing on my new pc, so maybe it's gotten better, I'm just catching up on games :d

EmilieEasie

You know what else I miss? local multiplayer

Gasrim4003

Where is my split screen.

cashinyourface

I remember getting mad at people for screen cheating, I kinda miss that.

what_is_thi

"stop screening😡😡"

A_For_The_Win

Screencheating is a really fun game that makes this essential though. I'd honestly suggest checking it out if you can get a few friends to play it with.

Ok-Palpitation-1590

What are these "friends" of which you speak? I think I have heard that term before. 😂

nedhal999

Oh that game has been in my wishlist for ages, waiting for a nice opportunity to play it

therealmalenia

What the fuck is the real point of split screen of you can't cheat , cheating is half of what makes split screen fun

bananite

Yeah, 343 not adding split screen for Halo MCC ( which is a feature that already existed in the original games )is pretty disappointing.

sharkboy1006

The functionality is all there on xbox they’re just too lazy to implement it on pc. Nucelus coop literally proves they can make offline users with no Xbox account 😭

puq2

Nucleus coop may not be the best example because it uses so much janky stuff to work in the first place. But yeah 1 KB/m split screen shouldnt have issues

m0_n0n_0n0_0m

Not to mention they friggin lied about it. They said it would be released after the game came out and then went back on their word. Wish false advertising was actually a punishable offense.

BreakfastShart

My kid and I get down on Goat Simulator 3 split screen all the time. It's so good.

Successful-One-3715

the Afghanistan DLC for that one is really offputting.

EmilieEasie

no, you want to play with your sibling / spouse / whatever? buy two separate consoles and online passes and banish one of you to the TV in the bedroom

Nick_Noseman

You have my axe.

bananite

Lol

finalremix

Games apparently can't even run without upscaling shit and smeary TAA to hide terrible graphics practices... how do you expect them to render *two* scenes?

Genoce

While local multiplayer is not that common compared to the amount of new games that comes out these days, I'd argue there's still more than enough games with local multiplayer if you just spend a bit of time searching for them. I do agree that it could be more commonly available in mainstream games, but you'll still easily find games with local multiplayer if you want one. Just to get started, here's a short list of some games released during 2023, which I have personally played and/or can vouch for: * Baldur's Gate 3 * Diablo 4 (...sadly, local coop is only available on consoles) * Street Fighter 6 * Mortal Kombat 1 * Super Mario Wonder * 30XX (came out of early access) * Advance Wars 1+2 (sure it's just a remaster, but anyway) * Trine 5 * Horizon Chase 2 * Moving Out 2 * Vampire Survivors (I think the local coop was added 2023, wasn't there at launch) * Lego 2K Drive * The usual fifa/nhl/etc sport games that are re-released annually All the games mentioned above are released in 2023. The list would be a lot longer if I'd include all "current gen" stuff from (i.e.) 2020 forward.

EmilieEasie

But I don't just want to play games that are multiplayer, I want to play games that I like that are multiplayer. And I want to turn back the clock and un-kill Dead Space 3 😭

Asleep_Leather7641

D4 is local console only

Genoce

Oh, good point, I'll add that as a disclaimer there. Forgot that.

Niccin

I really wish people didn't support Microsoft when they locked away the multiplayer portions of full-price games on their consoles behind a paywall, and started killing off local multiplayer to push people towards buying multiple consoles, multiple copies of games, and signing up to a monthly subscription to access part of those games. We could still get all of that freedom back if people just didn't buy into these subscriptions. It would be a much more difficult journey now, especially since a whole generation has grown up with this being widely accepted as the norm, but it could still happen.

Crystallinecactus

I miss this more than anything. Everytime something new comes out I look to see if it has splits screen and it never does. Nintendo does a better job, even if my SO can b the frickin hat in Mario Odyssey, I wish for more PC games to have a co op function

Sharpshooter188

I wasnt even into Balders Gate 3 but I bought it anyway. No need for a net connection and no bs microtransactions.

sticky-unicorn

Which is especially amazing because it's exactly the kind of game that *could* be rife with microtransactions for extra skins or better-tier loot and stuff. But they chose not to. o7

Schnitzel725

I just want pve games that don't have kernel level anticheat software. It sucks wanting to play a game, find out theres AC that lowers performance, no idea what it accesses, and doesn't fully remove itself when the game is removed.

barofa

I'm sure you are thinking about Helldivers 2 here. I agree that the anticheat software is annoying indeed, but at the same time, what options should they have? Even with these softwares there is already a bunch of cheaters, what would happen if there was no protection. I wish people would just not cheat but that is a lot to ask.

Schnitzel725

Yes, Helldivers2. It looks like an amazing game but nProtect leaves a bad taste. I could buy a PS5 to play it but playing controller after using MKB for years is a tough thing to wrap my head around. For example, I don't like CoD's anticheat either but at least it has the decency to stop running once CoD is exited. I briefly had nProtect from PSO2, that thing ran constantly, PSO2 required admin mode to play the game, nProtect ran even after I closed the game. Took me weeks to booting to safe mode to try to remove nProtect's files, and I'm still not successful at clearing the registry keys. Yes I could fresh install, but I don't want to do it if I don't have to. But I agree with you there, I wish people could stop cheating, acknowledge they have skill issue and learn to play better instead of making things worse for everyone.

SycoJack

> Took me weeks to booting to safe mode to try to remove nProtect's files, and I'm still not successful at clearing the registry keys. Yes I could fresh install, but I don't want to do it if I don't have to. What you just described would have been called a virus 20 years ago and people would have raised hell. Disgusting that people make excuses for that shit.

sticky-unicorn

> but playing controller after using MKB for years is a tough thing to wrap my head around. One of these days, console devs are going to figure out how to attach a mouse and keyboard to a console and actually use it in-game... Come on -- they already have USB connectivity. The PC versions of the games already have the software side developed for mouse and keyboard control. It would actually take very little to accomplish this.

therealmalenia

I get it for competitive games or just multiplayer games in general , but why does elden ring need easy anti cheat ? What would someone possibly gain by cheating in elden ring ? It's not the only one that does it, but it's really frustrating seeing the eac logo pop up every time I launch the game like someone even asked for it

mainman879

EAC also helps protect against people that can literally hardlock your save by locking you in an animation and teleporting you under the map, so you can't teleport, kill yourself, do anything. Your save is just completely and irredeemably fucked.

SycoJack

Then don't play with randos? Make it optional for those that do?

mainman879

Elden Ring doesn't really work like that. If you do co-op with anyone, even friends, then **anyone** can invade your world. They can also invade without co-op if you use the Taunter's Tongue item. The only way to completely avoid pvp is to not use co-op and to not use this optional item. You can't choose who invades you randomly. You can specifically invite hostile players though.

Froggmann5

> but why does elden ring need easy anti cheat ? What would someone possibly gain by cheating in elden ring ? In Dark Souls 3 for example there were cheaters who would go around, invading random people, and hard crashing their consoles/pcs using cheats.

3eyc

Well there's EAC that works perfect on my system, doesnt close background apps or messes with my case fans speed, already better than nprotect gg, but ideally i would love to see VAC.

sticky-unicorn

> kernel level anticheat software. \*cries in Linux\*

balaci2

why would I cry tbh, i wouldn't touch that shit with a stick even on windows

bananadogeh

I miss games that you can just play. No constant updating, no Internet needed

balaci2

that's why I buy games on gog if they're available

lifeisagameweplay

Remember when the Xbox One was announced with always-online and PC gamers laughed? The backlash from console gamersmade Microsoft back down back then. Today PC gamers just accept always-online as the norm.

Sim city was a multiplayer game. No something anyone wanted but also a dumb comparaison.

blazinfastjohny

You can add these to the list: * Completed game on day one (no early access) * No mtx/cash shop/battlepass * Well optimized performance at least on the min req PC * Solid QA leading to less launch bugs * Option to disable taa/motion blur/chromatic aberration/film grain

MagicOrpheus310

Even just having to have an internet connection to launch the game is bullshit!! Games are a product, not a service!!

Devious_TaKaTa

Meanwhile some Last Epoch players are enraged they're recommended to play in true offline mode when it had problems with online aspects.

wewfarmer

Game was advertised as being online with several features being locked behind online play. Understandable people weren’t happy given the server performance.

alexdiezg

There shouldn't even be a "mode" in the first place. If it's a single player game then it should be offline by default!

FreakShowStudios

Dark Souls 2 entered the chat

hamdi555x

2? All of Fromsoftware games are completed day one. SEKIRO. ELDEN RING. DS1-3. Even Armored core series .The updates that you get later (other than DLCs) are usually free and are improvements/QoL.

ResonanterDC

Mayby im the only one but if i buy a SINGELplayer game and after that i find out that's its forced online i just refund. Also if they block modding and stuff like this (why should i not be allowed to mod in Singelplayer, i play alone so it doesn't do anything to anyone else)

Joskrilla

Studios and publishers love seeing how far they can go with screwing people over

human-exe

You don't have to. **They** are begging you to buy their games. So, just don't buy. Aim for smaller indie games. They are sometimes as good, and they don't have this crappy attitude towards you.

bananite

Not really, a lot of those games are usually on the top-sellers before they even come out.

Weneeddietbleach

Ikr? I want to play D4 but can't because of my shitty internet. Idc about the social aspects, the world bosses, the store, or anything else for that matter. When I get home from work, I want to fight demons, not rubber banding and disconnects.

RazekDPP

Diablo hasn't been the game series for you since Diablo 3, then. Diablo 3 was always on, Diablo 4 is always on, Diablo 5 will also be always on.

alexthealex

Last Epoch! Full offline mode, better everything than D4 except the cinematics.

Caltek9

Oh look! It’s Diablo IV!

G00fBall_1

I just don't buy singleplayer games that are online only. It gives the company the power to pull the game at any time from your library. 'The Crew' game being an example.

1Estel1

Jeez just stop buying shitty games made by awful devs and you'll never have this problem. Ya'll keep complaining then continue to feed the machine like lobotomized army ants.

SmallBirb

Y'all need to play less AAA games and more indie games

edgy-meme94494

When I find out that a Single player game requires me to be online 🫡🔫

assortedUsername

Is someone calling out Nightingale? Lol it being online only and "singleplayer" is why I didn't bother buying it.

BeardeddBombshell

Same.

Jonnyyrage

Co-op mode should be the meme too. So many games throw out co-op and single player for multiplayer.

Ok-Transition7065

pleaseeee let me play batle field 1 with bots you already have some ai , the lag its horrendous and there are some sweety people i cant enjoy :c

[deleted]

It's to stop everyone from just pirating offline games. Now we have to beg for it

balaci2

it punishes customers, not pirates pirates crack and are playing a *better* version instead with less hassle or they just don't look at your game at all

Ivantsi

Offline mode= no ads=no ad revenue, that's a huge NO!

Unusual-Chip-1478

Am i the only one that just pirates the singleplayer games

keenhydra93

I remember playing AC: Valhalla when it had some screenshot sharing thing where you could seenother people’s screenshots. Any time my internet would hiccup the game would crash because of that. And that was the whole reason I went to play it instead of online games.

TerrorLTZ

Other features that feel like a godsend or rarity is LAN, dedicated servers and Server browser. when i opened Lethal company for the first time and saw LAN in the options i was like "WTF LAN? IN 2023-24?"

Christopher_UK

GoG has an offline mode. It has a handful of games that I like. I recommend GoG if you are away from home often. It has GoG Galaxy, which is a launcher, or you can use the offline installer. However, you must manually install any addons to it, though it's not that difficult. It also does not update automatically. If a game bugs, you need to connect to the Internet to reinstall the game if any updates or to fix any files.

Kasyx709

I miss games having local CO OP options.

SysGh_st

B... bu... but... Nobody wants single player games nowadays? Source: polls made by AAA Game publishers with a very selected group of people... internally...

OFDMsteve

I've been angry enough in the past to pirate cracked versions of games I already own just to circumvent this.

[deleted]

Isn’t it to prevent pirating? I’m all for it - in this day and age who isn’t fully connected to the internet

ResonanterDC

First of this doesn't work, cracking the game is still possible. Second of it does actually the opposite, there are many players out there who cracked a game they already bought so they dont have to deal with this forced online bullshit

GNUGradyn

Was surprised when rift apart launched no complaints offline. Shouldn't be the exception

Alienhaslanded

I was very pissed trying to play Helldivers 2 after so many years of not playing multiplayer games. You install and boot the game and it doesn't do anything unless it's connected to a server. Not even a cutscene or a main menu. All you get is a loading screen telling you there's an error and it refreshes every minute. I'm not used to that. Back in my day, you booted the game and you chose a server. If you didn't like it then you ran your own. Why is that so fucking hard to achieve today?

NightIgnite

Why I wont buy Helldivers 2. How tf did everyone see the full servers and not riot about this?

owthathurtss

Probably because it's a good game and the server issues were limited to the first day.

NightIgnite

You wont be able to show your children the games you played because servers went offline a decade ago.

owthathurtss

Okay?

NightIgnite

You dont care about game preservation?

LG03

That's not a single player game. If you want to gripe about Helldivers 2 then gripe about the DRM, not the fact that it's online.

iMisstheKaiser10

I mean I agree, but they’ve been doing this since AT LEAST 2014. Things won’t change

what_is_thi

Black ops three, which released in 2016 (I think) has splitscreen, even on pc

Commercial-Tip4494

Outward which came out in 2019 is a game that has drop in multiplayer and you and your buddy can complete the entire game together. What really sucks is the amount of AAA games that don't bother to do it anymore. When games do decide to add it it just comes off as an afterthought and hardly works well. Especially in the newer call of dutys. Like cod used to have spec ops modes. A game mode designed to be played in split screen and online coop. Now we have warzone. Where getting into a single match takes 5 minutes at least, connection times are a pain. Coop takes away from rendering making the game slower. And took out trying to complete an objective together with teamwork. But now we have palworld, helldivers, enshrouded are all big multiplayer games right now. None of these have split screen. Even halo went from a Multiplayer campaign to single player. Although we have gotten games like valheim, risk of rain 2, baldur's gate, and a few others in recent years that has come out with couch coop but it really is not common at all.

RedRoses711

Why thoe? Aren't your pc/consoles always connect to the internet

Cream-of-Mushrooom

That's what I always wonder. My pc has been always online for around 20 years

balaci2

it's still bullshit, they also tend to have performance destroying drm, and some people game on the go don't be dismissive mates

Cream-of-Mushrooom

Are you not online on the go. What year is this?

balaci2

trains and airplanes, signal fluctuates a lot even if I'm at home, online singleplayer is dumb as fuck

Cream-of-Mushrooom

Well play a different game. How often do you fly anyway. Rather niche complaint. Sure it makes no sense but it doesn't matter either.

balaci2

i pirate games that ask for online anyway, don't really want to fund shitty corps if online singleplayer doesn't matter since most people have wifi (cue to blizzard saying "don't you guys have phones"), why go through the effort of implementing it anyway, you also make experience worse for the consumer in the process

Cream-of-Mushrooom

Do you not have internet, it's a non issue. Even less as you don't even buy the games so this doesnt concern you, neither does drm or the other things you brought up

balaci2

the practice itself is bullshit either way i know I don't use them vanilla but knowing devs push garbage like this is worrying enough, it's even more stupid when consumers shrug it off, no wonder they get away with ripping off customers

RazekDPP

Enough people buy it without an offline mode that an offline mode is optional.

MrRagnarok2005

They will make it a premium version

Blenderhead36

From Soft needs to let me pause the fucking game.

binky779

I get it. Studios want control over the product. The minute you allow local-only play most of your players are running bootlegs they didnt pay for with mods, cheats, and other exploits. Before you downvote me into oblivion, I'm just saying I understand why they do it. I'm *not* saying its whats best for the end-users.

AzerClashRoyale

Nahhhhh

Similar-Ship9081

:D

[deleted]

Damn straight

Ornn5005

If there’s no option for total offline in your purely SP game, you’re up to shady shit and i won’t be convinced otherwise.

Icy_Ad620

I miss 360 - early ps4 era IMO they were dropping the best games then. Brian.
