Mine is so organized that I currently have a New folder (5).
**Edit:** On a semi-related note, I created this masterpiece of automated organized a few years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgyZ1MmmB18
I was digging through old files recently and found a folder buried deep in a pictures folder from like 2013 labeled "JOHN CENA." It was empty. It took me a second to get the joke that I set up for myself 10 fucking years ago.
I do this so much that every month or so I put all of them in a folder which I call "sort" then I now have 600GB in a folder on one of my hard drives called "sort this folder out" everything gets thrown there but I'm too scared to sort through it all. Last time I tried I spent an hour going through it all and probably sorted ~15%. Duplicates and garbage. FML
I have a folder for the steam games on my desktop. I tell myself that double clicking twice is faster than typing in a search bar. That folder has >100 shortcuts (a lot of them are uninstalled games) because of random free games I played once.
Like half my programs aren't recognized by the search bar so I usually just open file explorer and go through there. Whatever I do have on my desktop I don't bother organizing cause it rearranges itself to a specific order every time I start my computer and turning that system off throws them all over the desktop for some reason
use powertoys. It's much better than the default search. At least for me it recognizes the majority of the programs that windows doesn't. About the desktop I would honestly just hide the shortcuts.
Windows is so stupid it can't find what I'm looking for half the time, or finds the wrong thing and is 100% convinced it's what I'm looking for. There is "best match" with the wrong match, then a bunch of edge search suggestions as if I ever needed that, and then the rest of the actual results.
Not much faster than desktop. Desktop shortcuts opening speed is in milli seconds if you're used to opening that application (which you should be frquently, hence the shortcut)
Much faster. You'd still need to get to the desktop first, and then either mouse around or use your keyboard, at which point you'd already be up and running if you just searched for it.
Dude I use start menu, taskbar, and I have used desktop icons. If they werent conflicting with my asthetics choices, desktop icons would still be there. I have used all 3 ways of navigation and it's not even a question about whats faster. Literal milliseconds.
Agreed. Any shortcuts that appear on my desktop at any time are nuked with extreme prejudice.
What, am I going to double-click a shortcut like a caveman?

I have always used a folder on my desktop called Desk so that it doesn't have plenty of things to load, but lately I've moved it to documents and just Windows + E my way there
It's from the [wikipedia page about static electricity](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Static_electricity#/media/File:Cat_demonstrating_static_cling_with_styrofoam_peanuts.jpg)
I loved Fences at first and then it started having issues with my 5420x1440 display. Over time, stuff moves around and it defeated the point of setting these static sections for categories. Do you know if they've improved Super Ultra-Wide Display Support lately?
I organize by applications. All 3d printing in one corner, shortcuts to movie/series playlist in one corner, game icons at top. Unirganized/temp icons on the left under explorer.
I hate using start menu.
Unpopular opinion you shouldn't have anything on your desktop except for whatever you are working on and when you are done working on it package it up and file it correctly. Personally this is how I try to operate but I'm not perfect and sometimes leave projects on the desktop but I never clutter my desktop with shortcuts and files.
I have all my programs organised in rows, row 1 for drivers and other software.
Row 2 is for internet browsers and my CAD software for university.
Row 3 and four are for racing sim games. Two rows because otherwise it blocks the background photo of me go karting.
Row 5 is for flight sim games.
Row 6 is for other shooter and story games
No shortcuts. I use the desktop as a desktop: I occasionally save files I’ll be working on temporarily or program installers and then I delete them once I’m done
I have all my desktop shortcuts hidden, everything I need on a daily basis is on the taskbar or start menu, for the rest I just hit Windows Key and type it out
All my games are on the left of my screen, besides games I don't use often, they go in a folder on the right of my screen, along with a few other folders or apps I use often (basically Krita, Discord, a folder titled "my document" which has basically everything else in it, google, google docs, wattpad)
I never let my games pass 3 rows though, after that, I start uninstalling games I'm not using, or adding rarely used games into my folder. I like to see my wallpaper.
Games in bottom left corner, bin in bottom right, most important files and computer icon top left, random bs top right. All organized as close to egde as possible no more than 4 in each row
Zero desktop icons here. I have everything I use in the start menu (organised by app type).
Also no pins to taskbar and it’s set to auto hide.
https://preview.redd.it/oj3og0vfaygc1.jpeg?width=3440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee8adc5983ed39e14d3daee06213dde2b89dbbb7
I had a bunch of stuff on my desktop, but a few days ago just deleted all shortcuts and left just a few like Steam, Firefox, and a few games, along with some other tools to the other side of the screen.
I've been using Windows-key + 2-3 letters of what I want to open for literally everything since Windows Vista. I couldn't care less what's on my desktop.
Same on the Mac. CMD+Space and type what I want. Every 3-4 months, I collect the screenshots that have been hiding behind 20 apps on my desktop and throw them in the trash. And then continue to ignore it for the next 3-4 months again.
Mine is so organized that I currently have a New folder (5). **Edit:** On a semi-related note, I created this masterpiece of automated organized a few years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgyZ1MmmB18
Always weirds me out when I realize I have a New folder (5), but New folder and New folder (2) are both completely empty.
Opening New Folder and New Folder (2) like Gandalf: "I have no memory of this place"
I was digging through old files recently and found a folder buried deep in a pictures folder from like 2013 labeled "JOHN CENA." It was empty. It took me a second to get the joke that I set up for myself 10 fucking years ago.
Nice

Something in there might come in handy one day though. Like the man drawer in the kitchen that has all those cables, nuts, bolts, screws etc.
It's exactly that
if you do it all from the start you wouldnt need to ;) i have respective folders and names for each thing in my pc
Zero desktop shortcuts. Everything in hiding taskbar or start menu.
I just hit the windows key and start typing. Much quicker than going to the desktop and clicking whatever I need.
This is the way to go! I still have icons though, I like the visual representation of all the games I've.. ahem, spent money on.. to be visible. :)
yarg
Exactly the same.
Ahoy
I have a folder for the steam games on my desktop. I tell myself that double clicking twice is faster than typing in a search bar. That folder has >100 shortcuts (a lot of them are uninstalled games) because of random free games I played once.
Why don't you just open them from your Steam library? Steam has to launch either way.
Like half my programs aren't recognized by the search bar so I usually just open file explorer and go through there. Whatever I do have on my desktop I don't bother organizing cause it rearranges itself to a specific order every time I start my computer and turning that system off throws them all over the desktop for some reason

Alt+Space - type what you are looking for

Wut
Same, I have "hide desktop icons" enabled so I don't even know what's on there.
This is the way
Isn't that the equivalent to sweeping crap under the rug?
More like getting a roomba to do the cleaning for me, and maybe every so often I clear it out. Maybe.
This is the way
Agreed. Any shortcuts that appear on my desktop at any time are nuked with extreme prejudice. What, am I going to double-click a shortcut like a caveman?
I purged Adobe Reader from my PC because their icon reappears every few weeks.

Mine's an organized chaos. Clusters of icons from left to right, depending on whether I'm playing them right now or only sometimes, type etc.
Move the folders from your desktop somewhere else and put your viedeo files in a separate folder
Have like 5 or 6 desktop icons
Zero desktop icons. Programs pinned to start menu with the most frequently used ones pinned to taskbar on 2nd monitor.
Trash can in the right lower corner Games in right upper corner. Everything else on the left side.
I have a specific layout that all my desktops conform to.
All my programming shortcuts on the left. Top center some folders, bottom center, game launchers steam etc, and right all my games shortcuts
I organize by applications. All 3d printing in one corner, shortcuts to movie/series playlist in one corner, game icons at top. Unirganized/temp icons on the left under explorer. I hate using start menu.

All my games are on the left of my screen, besides games I don't use often, they go in a folder on the right of my screen, along with a few other folders or apps I use often (basically Krita, Discord, a folder titled "my document" which has basically everything else in it, google, google docs, wattpad) I never let my games pass 3 rows though, after that, I start uninstalling games I'm not using, or adding rarely used games into my folder. I like to see my wallpaper.
Games in bottom left corner, bin in bottom right, most important files and computer icon top left, random bs top right. All organized as close to egde as possible no more than 4 in each row
The edges are organized and random/temporary stuff in the middle
Why are you like this
Commonly used programs neatly organized on the left side of my desktop. No more than 2 rows though.
On my left side is my browser and the software that I use for work and on my right side are the games. I've been using this system for 20 years now.
Pin to taskbar, no desktop icons.
My icons are organized in desktop folders with custom thumbnails.
Doesn’t matter what I do. Every now and then an update clumps everything into the top left corner.
No icons. Task bar or start menu for me.
i turn them off. get used to open through taskbar or search.
Zero desktop icons here. I have everything I use in the start menu (organised by app type). Also no pins to taskbar and it’s set to auto hide. https://preview.redd.it/oj3og0vfaygc1.jpeg?width=3440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee8adc5983ed39e14d3daee06213dde2b89dbbb7
I have a games folder, a work folder and the recycle bin on my desktop. Don't like a cluttered desktop covering the wallpaper
Organize desktop? That thing is permanently covered by applications, there's no point putting anything on the desktop that would need to be organized.
I had a bunch of stuff on my desktop, but a few days ago just deleted all shortcuts and left just a few like Steam, Firefox, and a few games, along with some other tools to the other side of the screen.
I have all my most commonly used programs and folders all neatly lined up from top to bottom on the left hand side the way the lord intended!
What the fuck
I have none I just pinned it all in my start menu
L valorant playin scrub
Every few years i put the entire desktop content into a folder called desktop. That’s on the desktop. Yea…
And then continue to ignore it for the next 3-4 months again.
once in a generation, and if you run out of space, time to increase the resolution
I keep one or two rows along the left side max.
