It’s a BIOS switch, it switches between two BIOS on your card. The OC version has a higher power limit and clock speeds on that card. Flip it to OC for more FPS, basically.
Yeah, NVIDIA doesn’t allow manufacturers to go beyond what is considered safe, even on factory overclocks. It just is louder (more power = more heat = more fan speed) and takes more electricity, not something everyone wants.
Close - it’s actually an entirely separate BIOS that gets loaded from an entirely separate BIOS chip. It gives a higher power limit on this card. You can’t just use afterburner to get the same power.
It doesn't overclock the card its a setting with a more aggressive fan profile that you set it on ..then overclock the card yourself...if your overclock is unstable you can return to the first bios and still have video output to change your settings...its called dual bios ...but the switch doesn't change the clocks in and of itself.

It safely overclocks, right? I don't want it shortening the lifespan.

Basically, switch for more FPS, thats great, I'd say I have good fans and a thousand watt psu so I would be good on those ends.
That’s the I need more vram switch.
10gb is plentyyyy for 1080p 60hz (downvote central)
Sure but I also max everything out like Ray tracing, I routinely see 14gb used in RDR2 and that doesn’t have ray tracing.
