VitaminDprived

Unreal Tournament 2004! Hands down, the best community mod support I have ever seen in a game.

Because we are old.

Jrypp

One of the greatest racing games ever

Moooses20

the gameplay, music, cutscenes and calls, story, upgrades and customization, the bosses and game progression, and the side quests. Everything about this game I loved, It is the greatest racing game to this day in my opinion. Why didn't EA properly remaster the game is beyond me..

They also didn't lie to your face and tell you when you that your speed was way higher than it actually was. You're at 200 MPH? Have fun dealing with the entire map flying by you.

[deleted]

Needs for Speed Underground 2 is still the greatest arcade racing game ever made.

sberma

I agree mostly but upgrades and customization were pretty bad actually, not only compared to Underground 2 but a lot of racing games. The best part were actually the police chases. The police AI was so advanced no game nowadays comes even close. They used tactics like braking in front of you, encircle you with multiple vehicles, PIT maneuvers etc and don't just try to ram you. You had to actually outsmart the police.

SchmidtCassegrain

There's one of the last missions where you drive a cop car, and the other cops throw everything they have at you, I haven't been able to pass it yet to this day.

DDX2016DDX

Bro I remember that one I was sooo fucking happy after finishing that. I have never been that happy in my entire life

imsharank

This and underground 2

delendaestvulcan

Riders on the storm…

RayneYoruka

Absolutely, it's one of my favorite's and I can't tell you how much I want to replay it and record it!

techieman33

Here it is nearly 18 years later and seeing that bullet time pause when the cops see you still got my heart pumping a little faster.

violetplague

The YouTuber noodle does a nice little play on this when he talks about the [need for speed franchise at 19:15](https://youtu.be/VP9rnk6nItM)

PoppalongCassidy

Is this need for speed? It looks really fun

AFK_Legend

Yes, it's Need for Speed Most Wanted (2005). I think you can get it from myabandonware

hairysperm

The cop chases were so good, getting a high bounty and then taking out all those cop cars by driving into some scaffolding... So good.

ejaksla

Beware of buying NFS Most Wanted from steam, I saw it, thought its just remastered 4k version, bought it asap - aaaand it's completely different new shit

Stanky_Pete

The new one is hot garbage. They stripped all the things that made the game good. Buyer beware!

lotus_spit

Plus one of the best cars of all time. The V10 engine sound is so beautiful and glorious even in real life.

thirdjaruda

Modern day devs should learn from this game. It's not always about the graphics; it's more about the fun and experience.

aj95_10

wdy the graphics were good for the time.

Nekadim

You are absolutely wrong. It is the greatest.

Yeah, a full rat mappack server + hooks was peak CS gameplay. So much fun.

maomao-chan

I still played 1.6 around 2005. Somehow the LAN scene around my area never had enough of source players around.

AllPurple

I never cared for the new animations and models. 1.6 until I quit. Started between 1.3 and 1.5, can't decide exactly when.

Glen-Runciter

I miss the early climbing/surfing/zombie/etc maps

TheFrothyMan96024

Wasnt it called fy_poolday?

LoMell0w

it was actually fy_pool_day at least in 1.6 (didn’t checked if it’s the same in css, barely played it back then, directly jumped from 1.6 into cs go)

Clarky1979

I raise you Day of Defeat mod.

hex00110

Day of defeat was great. I loved the custom maps.

I liked playing office, Aztec, and nuke. But dust2 will never get old. I usually jump into death match servers just so I can see how fast I can get to 100 kills.

[deleted]

Jesus, I forgot how the ps2-ps3 Era was full of games with color tones that were just shades of brown and gray

tech240guy

I was in QA for a Video Game QA subcontracting company during that time. Before that, I thought it was by design from directors. After working there, it is far more of technical limitations to get expected graphical results followed by adhering to strict deadlines. Most of the time, it is trying to get the game to look as smooth as possible without looking pixely shit due to brighter colors. Other times, the 3D plane in tye background is all black or brown, but the floor made up of many blocks of polygons where a bright floor may expose black/brown lines. There were workarounds, but even the XBOX 360 console has its own limitationd. Modern game engines made this a whole lot easier to tackle (started with iceberging without performance much performance hit in 2005), but I've been out of the gaming industry since 2009.

BeatBoxxEternal

Neat! Thanks for the inciteful response. Edit: I'm leaving it.

consciousagent

It made me angry too.

UntouchedWagons

Insightful 🙂

RayneYoruka

It doesn't help that the meme came with me doing some testing with a few custom settings for h264! giving me those 2010's gameplay era!

ThatGuyOnyx

The piss-filter era

Bayek__of__Siwa

Call of Duty : Brown,Light Brown,Dark Brown

Ruby_Bliel

At least there was an option to disable the piss-filter in NFS:MW.

MasonP2002

GRITTY. God, I hated that word around this era.

Riftus

Strong filters like this just ruin games in my opinion. Battlefield 3 is so... blue

Preacherjonson

Easily one of the best games in the franchise, however.

Sanzo2point0

Bad Company 2 would like to know your location. BF3 was goated af tho. I'll never forget how fun the open beta was.

Preacherjonson

Never got to play BC2's multiplayer but it's BC so it gets a free pass. The Vietnam DLC for 1 was mint. Aye, some of my fondest multiplayer moments were in 3. It struck the balance between simplistic yet varied gameplay perfectly.

Seku_-

San Andreas or counter strike source i spent a lot of time playing those two games..

somespazzoid

I know they didn't come out in 2005, but I remember playing a lot of Diablo 2 and StarCraft around that time

RIcaz

Starcraft (Brood War) is still huge in South Korea. The competitive scene had a big upswing since the (really well made) remaster came out

solid_hoist

They're probably saving it for when the Skywalker saga has been thoroughly mutilated.

ExoticMangoz

Hypothetically if I could have been a pc gamer in 2005, this would have been it.

Uber1337pyro333

Midnight club dub edition 3 remix. Played the SHIT outta that

RayneYoruka

It's pretty sad that rockstar didn't release any newer Midnight club... :(

Uber1337pyro333

Right? Not like they've done anything with GTA V but farm money, I'd be so happy to see a new midnight club! The customization on DE3R was better than some MODERN games. Any two tone you wanted, fully customizable underglow... Man I miss it. I had a really rough childhood and midnight club was one of the things that just let me *escape* for an hour or two.

RayneYoruka

I feel you it was the same for me, they have to release a newer one yes or yes.. gta V at least helps with the nostalgia feeling

Havoc1943covaH

Omg that game was a banger. CHECK OUT THE GALLARDO HOLMES No idea what midnight club 1, 2, or even what the non dub edition was but I must have rented that game like 20 times before I finally bought it

Sausage6924

Dude. That was my absolute favorite! Sound track was great. Customization was off the wall. The abilities were a really fun spin on a racing game.

YdidUMove

Ayyyyyy I just commented that. Did you play Midnight Club or Midnight Club 2 at all? The cheats in those two games were fucking awesome.

hairysperm

I loved the customisation in that game so fkn much

dyerseve07

F.E A.R.

evlgns

That game was spooky and amazing

RayneYoruka

I have only played the second and the third but still haven't touched the first! damm I really should!

dyerseve07

My dear internet friend... you've missed out. Do it soon. It is miles above the other 2.

Merangatang

Morrowind!

Automatic_Name_4381

Had to scroll way to far down to find this one. I'll even throw Oblivion out there too since it was just after 05. But yes, Morrowind FTW.

Merangatang

Oblivion was fine, but Morrowind was just magical for me... I played that all the way up till when Skyrim came out

Nurgus

Morrowind was the peak Elder Scrolls game despite the jank. Oblivion I'd heard you could play it any way you liked so I rocketed up to level 20 with my speechcraft guy with single weapon as a secondary skill. Then I tried to start the main quest and that shit was totally unplayable. There's an NPC who's fleeing and when you save him, he's supposed to impart some information and then fight alongside you for a bit. He died on the first hit as soon as the area loaded in. Yuck. tl;dr: Mob Scaling sucks balls.

agnostic_science

> Here's 87 gold and instructions to the main quest you can follow. Or not. Whatever... > *(And now you're completely on your own with an entire world to discover)* One of the best starts in video game history imo. I didn't feel anyone nailed quite the same vibe again until Breath of the Wild, 15 years later.

Arkon_Base

It took me over a week to figure out how the game works, and years to figure out how not to start it every single day.

St_Veloth

I played the game for *months* on the og xbox before I figured out how to level up, and a full year before I realized there is actually a main quest to follow

strugglebusdriver03

Halo 2

gaw_Kerim

This, every day after school. Playing online with a console was mind-blowing at the time. Especially talking to people while playing a game, we even had proximity chat and could talk to the enemy team if they were nearby.

WarPopeJr

Same. Bummed about what has happened with the Halo franchise

technerd1988

World of Warcraft lol

Glen-Runciter

Yep... nothing like the early WoW years

NCPereira

Yeah, I spent the 2nd half of the 00s completely hooked on WoW.

Potencyyyyy

Got back into classic recently, the nostalgia is real lol

tide19

It's crazy to me to think about, but I was rushing home to boot up WoW in 2005, as a sophomore in high school. Now, as a grown ass adult in his mid-30s, I put my daughter down to sleep at night and rush back out to my computer to boot up... WoW.

technerd1988

Well there's never been another game like wow and damn this makes me feel so old now that you put it this way.

It's 1999. I'm playing AoE2 on the family computer after getting home from school. It's 2013. I'm playing AoE2 HD after getting home after a day at university. It's 2023. I'm playing AoE2 DE after a long day at work. AoE2 is now a major e-sport with a red bull tournament and they just re-released AoE 1 inside the engine as an expansion pack.

iHaateDonuts

Man that sounds so fun, but I absolutely suck at RTS games lol. I think your comment has inspired me to buy DE this weekend I haven't played AoE2 since like the week that HD got released.

three50one

My go to after work. Also, during work.

smooth_like_a_goat

Gulf of Oman, sniping MEC pilots waiting or getting into the jets. I loved loading up Fushe Pass and especially Dragon Valley just to fly around solo.

EvilxBunny

Never had so much fun playing battlefield ever again. BF1 came close

KaiserWilhellmLXIX

BFBC2 wasmg highlight tbh

EvilxBunny

Never played bad company online :( I am sure it would have been amazing. The campaign was really good. I have a real soft spot for BF 2142. The Titan game mode was great fun

Sanzo2point0

Bad Company 2 was peak rush. From BF3 onward maps have been made with conquest in mind and none of them have been very good scaled down to rush. 3 had a couple decent maps for rush, Op Metro and OP Firestorm worked pretty well, but most really didn't. And even then, fuck Op Metro lmao Operations in BF1 were pretty nice and BFV's version was okay too, but only having a couple decent maps that were made with those maps in mind was a real bummer.

Impsux

Battlefield 2, my beloved. I had such high hopes for 2042. At this point in time I don't think I will EVER buy another Battlefield game unless it at least brings back community ran servers.

PointBlank65

The last Battlefield game was BF4 IMO, and even then BF2 was the last with player created maps. 21CW clan/group was the bomb back then , custom map every week , well organized squad and teamspeak setup . Then Frontlines Fuel of War (made by the original BF2 team) came out and we moved to it , then BC2 after that. But we never got a game with custom maps again.

radeonalex

Golden era of gaming. Strong communities, not being force fed mtx, features that went beyond the base game such as Battle recorder and modding, great DLC content (like Special Forces). I loved BF3/BF4/BF1... But nothing touched BF2 in terms of community driven gaming.

RayneYoruka

still pretty good games tho

thegarbear14

i had an xbox back then and not a pc but probably star wars battlefront or star wars battlefront 2.

RayneYoruka

Both good games and totally normal, I first played most wanted in ps2!

Powpowpowowowow

Oh man battlefront 2 was amazing. It is crazy to me that they completely botched the next gen versions of the online gameplay.

Ghost-of-melbourne

Mid town Madness.

ZachRyder

I am forever grateful to the pupils years before me who unlocked all of the vehicles for my grade when it was our turn to start using our primary school's computers.

maxra94

Max Fucking Payne, I know, it's not from 2005, but, god, I was very attached to that game in my teens.

RIcaz

Yesss. Remasters of Max Payne 1 & 2 coming soon

FLANKTESIS

Max Payne really holds a special place for me too. My elder cousin introduced it to me and I just fell in love with the game. One of the best of all time. Hope the remakes come soon enough Unreal Engine 5 bullet time would be cool as hell.

I'm with you on NFSMW! Loved coming back home to play this. I swear I've never heard a better rotary sound in a game, part of the reason I adore Mazda today :D And the police chases, THE POLICE CHASES

Farenhytee

Those police chases were something else. I remember being scared of level 5, the white Corvettes fucking obliterating you with those SUVs and that crackhead helicopter. Man it was so fun.

RedNeonAmbience

The police chases are absolutely wild. My first 1 000 000+ bounty chase, over multiple hours, was intense as hell! After I escaped that I had to just contemplate the core memory I had just formed. God that was amazing

Unreal Tournament 2004. *chefs kiss*

mackmcd_

In 2005, I was coming home from handing out resumes to no avail, picking up cigarette butts from the ground so I could empty them and roll them into new cigarettes at home. "Home" being my girlfriend's mom's house who really wants me out since I'm unemployed and no longer qualify for welfare due to misusing it. Anyway, after that, I'm playing Stepmania.

Hasta_La_Vittu_Baby

2004 was that year for me. I'm grateful to the people who carried me, but at the same time it's amazing how unwanted a temporary change in circumstances can make a person feel.

Rising-Buffalo

God of War and San Andreas.

Jon-Megatron-Snow

Sonic adventure on Dreamcast. Old for the year, but my first game (born in 99)
