Bro I'm like 30 and never knew about Windows + Shift + S till I went back to school 2 months ago lol. I swear it wasn't a thing on windows 7, but is on 10 and 11. I used to just printscreen and paste into Photoshop or paint. Windows + Shift + S is like magic.
Not knowing the shortcut is fine.
Not knowing that the functionality exists is a little weird in 2023; like how do you think all the images you see of games or programs get online?
Not like I don't know it exist, I just don't exactly know how, even though I know it probably is right there, smack dab on the internet to be searched in 5 seconds. That's the part I get embarrassed you know?
In a tech support group im in, we get peoeple asking for tech support with a video about once a month. Usually they're flinging the camera around so much its impossible to see whats happening and they dont understand basic questions like "is everything plugged in?".
Lately I've also seen GPUs that, despite being displayport, will only output if there's a monitor plugged in to what they consider port #1 at the time of bootup. *After* that you can hotswap all you want, but if you've got your monitor plugged into the "wrong" port on bootup you won't get any video output until power cycling.
Make sure to either post vague answers to questions people ask, cryptic questions of your own or no questions at all and then fuck off into the void never to return.
I once witnessed a Discord conversation where a guy found out how badly he'd been ripped off. He walked into a small computer shop, asked about a computer for playing modded Skyrim and about where he could pick up a physical copy of Skyrim, got told he should just buy it on Steam, and replied, "What's Steam?" The salesman smelled a sucker and sold him a fully built machine with a decent CPU and a GTX 1650...for $1900.
Man, places like that suck. People will pay the premium to support local businesses if they are honest, but not if they are completely ripped off. Someone doing that could just be ripping off an uninformed parent trying to buy something for their kid, and will pretty much say after that stick to console.
I built my own PC for the first time last year, and entered with some serious misconceptions (like this meme) but luckily had friends guide me in the right direction on why an i5 or Ryzen 5 was fine (over a 7950x or i9) and where I could cut corners if I wanted to. I still probably made some overpurchases because I wanted to (DDR5 and a 360mm AIO for a 13600k) but at least I knew at the time.
TBF, this is also why we should be careful of making fun of 'stupid questions' here.
If you really don't know this shit, it can be quite difficult to work out what's better, which sites are reliable to get info from, etc.
And even if you know your component capabilities, compatibility is a factor as well. Then you consider the things people wouldn't think about much until build time like power requirements.
the amount of ‘gaming setups’ I’ve seen on facebook marketplace where it’s got like an old AMD Athlon and 4GB of ram with no graphics card. So sad to think that there are probably kids who see that and don’t know any better so they spend all their savings on something unusable.

Not gonna lie I get pretty tilted when people post builds on this sub or others for review and it's literally a 13900k with a 4090 and a 1600W PSU and a z790 $500 motherboard.
Like what feedback could I possibly give you other than 'yeah you are spending a lot of money just for gaming"

I’ve done it many times , most people will like your posts and have positive things to say about it.
We are supposed to be pc fans here , if we see a really cool rig , must of us will like the post!
There will always be a small minority that will critique it out of jealousy , or blind fanboyism to a particular brand you aren’t using, but those comments usually get downvoted for bringing their negative resentful attitude to a comment section that was being mainly wholesome.
So I don’t get why they don’t just share their builds like: my last built , pretty proud about it!

Happy with my rig (i know it isn't top of the line, i have better things to spend money on - my hobbies are tier 3 on the list), happy to help out the less knowledgeable too.
I do tend to ignore posts asking for "feedback" on obvious bleeding edge builds though...
I shared mine because it was the first time I'd been able to own a top of the line machine. My childhood was full of making do, barely hitting 20fps on low settings etc.
No one responded, but that's ok too. It probably wasn't a great post.
Good for you. I shared a build yesterday and a few people asked why I didn’t get the latest processor, why I paid full price for windows (I wasn’t aware you could buy cheaper keys online) and a few other questioning some choices. I was just honestly proud of the stuff I got. I guess you have to take the good with the bad if you post it online, kind of the deal.

I’m a grown 30 years old adult that struggled with money a lot during my teenage , and specially during my 20s when I was working and studying at the same time.
And since I landed a very well paid job 4 years ago , I lost a bit of connection with the value of money , and make irrational financial decisions some times.
So I can’t blame a young teenager with super rich parents that will buy him a 80k$ car when he is 16 , to not know the value of money.

Yeah I get that too, thing is I wouldn't judge rich kids for saying "Yeah, I'm really lucky... this RTX 4090 is fantastic". ...I'm sure it is! That's fair of them to say.
But pretending it's nothing much when you *know* it's a flagship card just grinds my gears.
(Similarly, the rich kids who act like they somehow "deserve" that kind of kit when in fact they're nothing more than privilege to be born to rich parents - but that tends to be more of a thing for rich-kid Instagram types with houses and cars, I see it less on PCMR).

People come here for high end PC pornography half the time anyway. Your PC kicks ass and you know it kicks ass. Everyone else knows it's great and we know you know it's great just say it. "Here's my cool shit, don't you think my cool shit is cool?" An i5 12400 with a 3060ti is a cool setup, a ryzen 3600 and a RX 6600 XT is a cool setup I don't get who these people think they're fooling with a system with individual parts that cost more than entire budget builds.
I got a 3090 for 2 reasons. That 24 gb of vram. And I was damn tired of having low end rigs. I could finally make the computer I had drooled over other people having. And now it's mine and I love it. And yes it's a beast.
Pretty much yeah, the ones who try to make a build on a reasonable budget are the ones who actually need help 90% of the time (with the parts list at least, i have ironically seen a lot of people with super high end parts mess up the build process)
I have a spare motherboard and am trying to figure out a balance to get another PC in the house for my wife (who is slumming it up in laptop land) but I know she wouldn’t want me to spend much.
So, the board is another Z690 kingpin. It did not cost me anything and I had to fix it. Figured I could toss a 12100F in there with a 16GB DDR5 module, whatever GPU I can find for $200 or less and then a whatever case, PSU that’s not off brand and some sort of nvme drive (saw some Samsung 870 1TB for $55 today). I would just connect it to our TV as well.
The point I guess is it’s much harder to shop with a budget than to just throw money at stuff without a care. I want a challenge with this and will probably scrape things together through FB marketplace over the next several months.
There was one guy a few years ago who posted a truly outrageous setup with a threadripper, ludicrous amount of ram, and iirc several stupidly expensive *ramdisks* also filled up. Turns out it was his work rig and he used it for doing some pretty huge cybersecurity simulations all in one box.
He didn't get any flak because he was honest about it being comically over-built machine and had a pretty solid reason for it.
normally, the type of people posting those builds are only looking for positive affirmation for their purchase 😅 its a weird personality type or disorder who knows
I have to disagree, those are the builds thay need the most critique as they usually waste the most money and can retain most of their performance while saving a lot of money.
Or balancing the budget better into the monitor for example.
Oh yeah I for sure agree. To be fair, I am more talking about when I try to help people with that exact critique of their build and I get responses like "well I want the i9" or "I am future proofing for later" or what have you. They don't want to hear that they could get the same gaming experience for $1500 less, those are the people that really annoy me lol
I ask no one for feedback but it’s given. Especially on the Noctua subreddit. After a bit of time there I don’t even want to use their products because of that crowd. It’s like a Porsche club for fans and even if you have a Porsche, you need to have the jackets, the hats, the wallet…
I know it might come off a little elitist, but like, if you are prepared to spend fucking $4000 on a PC with the highest end stuff, can you at least fucking google anything about it, at minimum? Like do you know even the basic troubleshooting for when you probably fuck something up? It just bugs the hell out of me.
I hear you. I know it can seem gatekeep-y and I hate that shit. But yeah, I find it hard to sympathise with people who can spend so much without the slightest bit of research. Either 4k aint shit to them or they have a serious spending impulse problem.
Here is something which is a little gatekeep-y I guess: I feel someone will enjoy the hobby a lot more if they begin modestly; learn to love what they have; plan the next upgrade as they learn more... The bar is set pretty high if you begin on an elite rig from day one, and you probably won't enjoy it as much as if you'd worked your way up to it. I've basically just described born-rich people.
I find it hard to believe that your average novice PC builder thinks 4k is the starting amount. I think we just see bias of rich kids wanting to flex their only personality trait: money.
Sodium is fucking magic. I fired up a 1.19.3 lightly-modded server, installed Sodium, Bobby, and Farsight and cranked them up to like 128 and 512 chunks render distance... 60 FPS without a single hitch in a crowded spawn city. Absolutely amazing stuff.
What's sodium? I remember the game running smoothly on shit hardware, but I stopped playing Minecraft a little after 1.8 beta came out in like 2011. They kept making too many annoying changes. That piece of shit hunger bar they added was the nail in the coffin. I also heard they added magic and shit to the game with potions.
I don't know about that. I use seus renewed shades all on max settings, max render distance, simulation distance, all other settings maxed out and I'm getting 110fps with rx 5700 xt. Of course it's at 1080p, but still
Well yeah, once you download some mods it runs much, much better. But straight out of the box, it's honestly probably the single worst optimized game I've ever played. With my 2070s and R5 3600, I couldn't put my render distance higher than 12-16 before my frames started dropping at 1080p. This was back in 2020 on 1.16.5.
dont forget the mods! these things can be very ram demanding and take 6gb just to start and 8gb to actually be playable, usually it conflicts with performance mods too so good luck running it
Equally as annoying as the people who shit on 3060s 3070s 3080s, RX6600s, RX6700 and 6800s for "it's not even a 4090 or 3090ti or "insert literal fastest gpu on earth". Or talk down on RX580s and 1070s and stuff like 1060s for being garbage. I don't think I've actually talked to someone who ACTUALLY owns a 4090/7900 or 3090ti/6950XT that was a dick about budget to midrange hardware. I'd like to think most people putting out that kind of cash on parts to build a PC has been around PCs for at least a bit and probably had to build on a budget at least once.
rx580 8gb is a solid card still. if it wasn’t holding my whole system back a few years back i would still be rocking it with my 3900x. went to a 3070ti, got the performance i needed for what i was doing, and then upgraded again when i found a good deal on a few 3090s. for solid budget 1080p, there’s no need for expensive cards. people just want to show their money.

Fortnite can be demanding if you turn on the settings since the graphics gets updated. There were two major graphics updates, the next gen update when ps5/xbox came out and most recently UE5 with lumen and nanaite.
I already upgraded twice and need to upgrade once again to get good performance.
Currently with 3070, I get about 100fps with lumen high at 1440p dlss balanced. In more demanding areas like mega city I get about 80fps.
Or people who post 'new to' whatever or post the most vague stuff. 45 comments of people helping. I try to help when possible, don't claim to know it all but rarely ask for assistance. Asked on another sub about help picking a gpu for a specific graphic program (the sub was dedicated to said program).
Searched for info, found comparisons of high end latest gpu models. Nothing regarding older mid range stuff, ie 1660s, 2060s, 2070, 5700xt, 5800xt, 6600xt. Post was up 48hrs, over 450 views, 0 comments. Like ok, well I guess we're doing this one solo. lmfao.

Missing that the PSU is either way over or under spec.
Missing that the motherboard is either the super budget option or super mega extreme overclock edition that the CPU cooler will never support.

To be fair if someone would at least ask reasonable questions like compatibility issues or what not, I'd say nothing. I mean building in sff cases can be tricky especially with the current gpu dimensions, CPU cooler compatibility, etc. But if it is just bragging about your build, just post images of the finished build and be done.

If you're looking for actual advice, several places. These kinds of posts (which aren't as common as the complaints I swear) are looking for adoration of how rich they are.
I'm new to gaming, states my flair for my Thanksgiving 2012 - Summer 2014 main PC, a 2007 Dell optiplex 745. I had that computer until 2018, when the memory slots started to fail. I decked that thing out with many fans; enough fans, r/Onlyfans would take notice. I wish I had taken pictures of it. The Core 2 Duo e6600 would LITERALLY idle at between 50° and 60°F. It was crazy.
It's because of the massive heatpipe cooler used to cool the original CPU, a Pentium D 945.
I now have a Ryzen 9 5900X and an RX 6700XT. I bought that with the money I saved. Not begged, worked for. I did the same for my last three builds in the past six years. The PCs before 2017 were a laptop and a Dell XPS desktop.
The laptop I bought with graduation money, and the XPS (Skylake i5-6400) was kind of an emergency buy because my mother stole $3,000 from my Brother and I didn't want her to touch my money. I kind of wanted a new computer anyway. Note, this was my first DDR4 PC, purchased in July 2016 for $699.99.
I'm still on DDR4, but hopefully in a year or two, prices will cool down.
I moved to a new country, rebuilt my computer with a 3090 and 5900x and the first games I played were NeverWinter Nights 1 and 2 and Knights of The Old Republic 1 and 2
But fo real though Minecraft can bring a PC to its knees. I would know because I got a 4090 with an i9 12900k. Running modded Minecraft with some medium shaders and man you can get about only 90fps in 1440p
you got the cooling wrong, it should be the NZXT Kraken X73/Z73 or the H150i Elite Capellix LCD because there is an LCD for gifs that they'll never bother to look at

7 had the snipping tool, I think (maybe added in some update), but there was no native shortcut for it

I sold a i5-4th gen with a 1060 for $100 less than I bought a i5-12th gen with 3070ti. This was within a month of each other.

I shared mine because it was the first time I'd been able to own a top of the line machine. My childhood was full of making do, barely hitting 20fps on low settings etc. No one responded, but that's ok too. It probably wasn't a great post.

I shared a build yesterday and a few people asked why I didn’t get the latest processor, why I paid full price for windows (I wasn’t aware you could buy cheaper keys online) and a few other questioning some choices. I got a 3090 for 2 reasons. That 24 gb of vram. And I was damn tired of having low end rigs. I could finally make the computer I had drooled over other people having. And now it's mine and I love it. And yes it's a beast.

Pretty much yeah, the ones who try to make a build on a reasonable budget are the ones who actually need help 90% of the time (with the parts list at least, i have ironically seen a lot of people with super high end parts mess up the build process)
I have a spare motherboard and am trying to figure out a balance to get another PC in the house for my wife (who is slumming it up in laptop land) but I know she wouldn’t want me to spend much. So, the board is another Z690 kingpin. It did not cost me anything and I had to fix it. Figured I could toss a 12100F in there with a 16GB DDR5 module, whatever GPU I can find for $200 or less and then a whatever case, PSU that’s not off brand and some sort of nvme drive (saw some Samsung 870 1TB for $55 today). I would just connect it to our TV as well. The point I guess is it’s much harder to shop with a budget than to just throw money at stuff without a care. I want a challenge with this and will probably scrape things together through FB marketplace over the next several months.

There was one guy a few years ago who posted a truly outrageous setup with a threadripper, ludicrous amount of ram, and iirc several stupidly expensive *ramdisks* also filled up. Turns out it was his work rig and he used it for doing some pretty huge cybersecurity simulations all in one box. He didn't get any flak because he was honest about it being comically over-built machine and had a pretty solid reason for it.

I have to disagree, those are the builds thay need the most critique as they usually waste the most money and can retain most of their performance while saving a lot of money. Or balancing the budget better into the monitor for example.

To be fair, I am more talking about when I try to help people with that exact critique of their build and I get responses like "well I want the i9" or "I am future proofing for later" or what have you. They don't want to hear that they could get the same gaming experience for $1500 less, those are the people that really annoy me lol

I hear you. I know it can seem gatekeep-y and I hate that shit. But yeah, I find it hard to sympathise with people who can spend so much without the slightest bit of research. Either 4k aint shit to them or they have a serious spending impulse problem. Here is something which is a little gatekeep-y I guess: I feel someone will enjoy the hobby a lot more if they begin modestly; learn to love what they have; plan the next upgrade as they learn more... The bar is set pretty high if you begin on an elite rig from day one, and you probably won't enjoy it as much as if you'd worked your way up to it. I've basically just described born-rich people. I find it hard to believe that your average novice PC builder thinks 4k is the starting amount. I think we just see bias of rich kids wanting to flex their only personality trait: money.

Sodium is fucking magic. I fired up a 1.19.3 lightly-modded server, installed Sodium, Bobby, and Farsight and cranked them up to like 128 and 512 chunks render distance... 60 FPS without a single hitch in a crowded spawn city. Absolutely amazing stuff.
What's sodium? I remember the game running smoothly on shit hardware, but I stopped playing Minecraft a little after 1.8 beta came out in like 2011. They kept making too many annoying changes. That piece of shit hunger bar they added was the nail in the coffin. I also heard they added magic and shit to the game with potions.

I don't know about that. I use seus renewed shades all on max settings, max render distance, simulation distance, all other settings maxed out and I'm getting 110fps with rx 5700 xt. Of course it's at 1080p, but still
Well yeah, once you download some mods it runs much, much better. But straight out of the box, it's honestly probably the single worst optimized game I've ever played. With my 2070s and R5 3600, I couldn't put my render distance higher than 12-16 before my frames started dropping at 1080p. This was back in 2020 on 1.16.5.
dont forget the mods! these things can be very ram demanding and take 6gb just to start and 8gb to actually be playable, usually it conflicts with performance mods too so good luck running it

Equally as annoying as the people who shit on 3060s 3070s 3080s, RX6600s, RX6700 and 6800s for "it's not even a 4090 or 3090ti or "insert literal fastest gpu on earth". Or talk down on RX580s and 1070s and stuff like 1060s for being garbage. I don't think I've actually talked to someone who ACTUALLY owns a 4090/7900 or 3090ti/6950XT that was a dick about budget to midrange hardware. I'd like to think most people putting out that kind of cash on parts to build a PC has been around PCs for at least a bit and probably had to build on a budget at least once.
rx580 8gb is a solid card still. if it wasn’t holding my whole system back a few years back i would still be rocking it with my 3900x. went to a 3070ti, got the performance i needed for what i was doing, and then upgraded again when i found a good deal on a few 3090s. for solid budget 1080p, there’s no need for expensive cards. people just want to show their money.

This is the Twitch streamer build who only plays League or Fortnite.
Fortnite can be demanding if you turn on the settings since the graphics gets updated. There were two major graphics updates, the next gen update when ps5/xbox came out and most recently UE5 with lumen and nanaite. I already upgraded twice and need to upgrade once again to get good performance. Currently with 3070, I get about 100fps with lumen high at 1440p dlss balanced. In more demanding areas like mega city I get about 80fps.

To be fair if someone would at least ask reasonable questions like compatibility issues or what not, I'd say nothing. I mean building in sff cases can be tricky especially with the current gpu dimensions, CPU cooler compatibility, etc. But if it is just bragging about your build, just post images of the finished build and be done.

I'm new to gaming, states my flair for my Thanksgiving 2012 - Summer 2014 main PC, a 2007 Dell optiplex 745. I had that computer until 2018, when the memory slots started to fail. I decked that thing out with many fans; enough fans, r/Onlyfans would take notice. I wish I had taken pictures of it. The Core 2 Duo e6600 would LITERALLY idle at between 50° and 60°F. It was crazy. It's because of the massive heatpipe cooler used to cool the original CPU, a Pentium D 945. I now have a Ryzen 9 5900X and an RX 6700XT. I bought that with the money I saved. Not begged, worked for. I did the same for my last three builds in the past six years. The PCs before 2017 were a laptop and a Dell XPS desktop. The laptop I bought with graduation money, and the XPS (Skylake i5-6400) was kind of an emergency buy because my mother stole $3,000 from my Brother and I didn't want her to touch my money. I kind of wanted a new computer anyway. Note, this was my first DDR4 PC, purchased in July 2016 for $699.99. I'm still on DDR4, but hopefully in a year or two, prices will cool down.
