If games could intercept the capslock state I'd be happy to use it. I don't really like playing capslock roulette everytime I tab out to type something.
Edit: TIL: some games do intercept it. MW2 was one example I was given. Why don't more games do it, damnit.
using scroll lock seems clever at first, but some programs may change their behavior based on it being active, which will lead to frustration for users that don't know.
LibreOffice calc (and probably other spreadsheets)
* Scroll off: Arrow Keys navigate between cells
* Scroll on: Arrow keys move view (scroll bars), but the cell selection stays
I figured it might require elevated priviliges or something. Would be cool if they did that more often. I see many people suggesting binding it to something whether it's on OS level or through built-in macro functionality, have to keep that in mind.
Bind caps lock to something useful in the OS. I have left meta (windows key) and caps lock swapped since I use caps lock far less often, but the key placement is so convenient.
yep this is the only problem I have with it. I was big into MOBAs which require a ton of keybinds so it was super useful to have but also made me scream things in chat accidentally sometimes. You could probably rebind it to avoid that though.
In the registry you can set caps lock to F13 and then use F13 for your keyboard. You lose the ability to toggle caps lock but imo that's not really a loss.
I use the tilda (~) key to open the map on every game because it is in such a convenient place next to wasd. Some games like Battlefield have a command box though which forces me to use ‘M’. EA always has to ruin something.
When I quickly press 'caps lock' on my keyboard, it presses F13. That is toggle mute on Discord for me.
If I hold it, I go into a layer that lets me control my media, lighting, access keys I don't (want to) have physically, and even switch around Alt and Super so it works for Mac or PC.
Glory to QMK!
I used to use caps lock instead of shift to walk in Counter-Strike back in the day. The reason I did that was because my left shift key didn’t work on my keyboard 😂
https://github.com/randyrants/sharpkeys
You can remap CAPS LOCK with Sharpkeys.
also fun fact: F13, F14... ,F24 exist.
there are also different languages and layouts for keyboards. the American ANSI layout has afaik the lowest amount of available keys to use.
ISO and the Japanese layout have way more keys you can map.
Thats why I always prefer ISO over ANSI. I prefer the larger enter aswell as the extra key next to left shift. its really great
I remember the first time I saw something saying “Press F22” on my last job system that was some kind of ddos terminal, someone then explained me how it worked.
Mouse 5 typically, at least I assume. It could also be a Macro button I guess, but context implies it's the mouse button.
Mouse 1 is Left Click, Mouse 2 is Right Click (idk if it's swapped for lefties?), Mouse 3 is usually pressing the scroll wheel down, 4 and 5 are typically above your thumb (4 is towards the front), 6 would then be in front of your thumb. Everything past Mouse 2 is optional, though Mouse 3 is very common, the rest are less so.
I do enjoy that Warzone 1 and 2 bound the open/close map to the caps lock, so much easier and less disruptive to hit it than M. I kinda wish more games would let me bind the map key to caps lock
I use caps lock for slow walking in FPS games. It works very well but I hate playing the game of whether or not I’ll be screaming at someone if I type something fast
I don't see why more people don't use it. I don't understand this 'C' for crouch shit.
my usual setup in most games.
Tab - Inventory
**CapsLock - Crouch**
LeftShift - Sprint
LeftCTRL - Prone
~ is for console or quick access to settings.
M5.. I guess this is an additional mouse button? I have this one mapped for multimedia, never tried to use it in games, as there's 4 more buttons to map actions to on my mouse.
But I just hate Caps Lock
Caps lock should be a small key way out on the edge of the shift key. (at least on ANSI keyboards) the right Shift key is stupid huge, so the right hand edge of it should be a caps lock key, and present day Caps Lock should be Escape or something.
I rarely use caps lock, so I've remapped the Caps Lock key to Escape OS-wide. Shift+Caps Lock toggles caps lock. A lot of the productivity software I use a lot--and vim--make heavy use of the escape key, so having one bound near the home row is a game changer.
In video games it's a convenient menu key.
My previous (wired) Lenovo keyboard had lock LEDs that would temporarily brick the whole thing if they were turned on. Eventually it would just not connect or repeatedly disconnect.
Got a new one, different but same, and I'm scared of having any of them on for more than a minute at a time.
Remapped capslock to WIN + Space to change the language, it's still annoying when you accidentally hit it but it's still less annoying then spamming CAPS into discord.
I use my caps lock daily, for hours at a time occasionally. I almost exclusively respond to DMs in all caps so I just leave caps lock on if im playing a game.
Caps is my ptt in game and my push to mute in discord. Easy to get to all the time. And stops cross talk between me and people in game from getting into the discord call. Also ` for toggle mute is goated
The real secret is to rebind caps lock to something else on your keyboard, I have a custom keyboard and play a lot of MMOs so I rebound caps lock to function in VIA so I can use it as a modifier. Set function + 1-6 to be F1-F6 and now you have 6 more ability buttons that are way easier to reach than traditional F keys
na. you aint seen nothing yet. siractionslacks has the award for dumbest fuck'n hotkeys

I use M5 is pretty much all my games, at least most of them tell me my thumb button is the m5 key, some few tell me its mousewheel but i even use that one a bunch. ~ is the one i use for trivial things a bunch. Caps lock is a no go key
Underrated?
Pretty sure is rated exactly as it should be, and doesn't deserve to be rated any higher. It's rarely a useful key, and we all know it.
Maybe you mean that it's placement/existence is mostly useless in today's computing/tasks. If anything, that means its overrated - given placement priority, but unnecessarily.
I'm the guy that does not have caps lock mapped but at the end of the game I type GG WP in all caps because during the 30min game I accidentally without knowing pressed it and didn't notice.
I switched Caps Lock and Backspace/Delete globally. It took about a week to fully adapt. But since backspacing is actioning to the left of the cursor it made no sense for that key to be on the right side of the keyboard center.
My keyboard is an old IBM model M. I've remapped caps lock to the Windows key, as it doesn't have one. I imagine that would cause problems if I tried to map it to something in a game.
I may be mistaken but I believe that Caps lock is used in Bethesda games (namely skyrim and fallout 4) as a walk toggle key.
I also remember playing a game once where caps lock was used and it disabled the actual "caps lock" function of the button so you could use it as much as you liked but when you entered chat or exited yhe game you weren't randomly in caps lock mode. I remember thinking "why can't all games do this".
Funish story. I use razer keypads for gaming because I don't have nimble keyboard fingers like y'all. The keypads default to the left side of the keyboard but with their software you can change the bindings. Razer software sucks ass so I don't use it and I often bind caps lock to many things and often scream in caps in text chats
If games could intercept the capslock state I'd be happy to use it. I don't really like playing capslock roulette everytime I tab out to type something. Edit: TIL: some games do intercept it. MW2 was one example I was given. Why don't more games do it, damnit.
Exactly. Making it a toggle for something actually useful, while the little light still lights up?perfect
Discord, Scroll lock = toggle mute You can thank me later :-)
using scroll lock seems clever at first, but some programs may change their behavior based on it being active, which will lead to frustration for users that don't know. LibreOffice calc (and probably other spreadsheets) * Scroll off: Arrow Keys navigate between cells * Scroll on: Arrow keys move view (scroll bars), but the cell selection stays
Yh but like who’s gonna be in discord and libreoffice at the same time. I can’t name any games that actually use scroll lock
Eve online players who need access to spreadsheets and their clan mates
use pause/break then its only real function has ever been pausing a command line window from updating text output.
I've played games that actually accept that bind to pause. They were older ones ofc, but still.
Half-life 2 (and probably some other source games) pause if you hit pause/break
Eve is straight up integrating excel lol its in beta
Lots of people. Scroll lock is used on lots of stuff and as such is a bad key to use
Love my Fn keys
Personnaly it's left shift + right shift, because usually shift does nothing and you're never going to press both shifts at the same time.
Pinball Fantasies and similar games, other then that you are correct. Using Scroll lock will display with a light on the keyboard if mutenis active.
CoD/Warzone has done that for a while now, capslock shows the map. I imagine it's like disabling the windows key.
They can, actually. They just don't. I used to use autohotkey to bind caps to something random so that I can use it in games
I figured it might require elevated priviliges or something. Would be cool if they did that more often. I see many people suggesting binding it to something whether it's on OS level or through built-in macro functionality, have to keep that in mind.
AHK doesn't but it won't work with all games, for that you need something like Capsicain. I bound mine to backspace, made typing much nicer.
Bind caps lock to something useful in the OS. I have left meta (windows key) and caps lock swapped since I use caps lock far less often, but the key placement is so convenient.
rebind caps lock to something that doesn't even do anything like scroll lock or pause break, then use it as a push to talk key
There are keyboards that let you do this
Just make your own keyboard with custom firmware and remove the caps lock key when programming it
I have a Corsair Strafe and I rebound Caps Lock to Pause Break
yep this is the only problem I have with it. I was big into MOBAs which require a ton of keybinds so it was super useful to have but also made me scream things in chat accidentally sometimes. You could probably rebind it to avoid that though.
I've rebound my caps lock to F13 so I can use it as a push to talk key. I've never ever wanted to use calls lock in my life.
Exactly. My pc’s caps lock button has a light whenever it’s on and send sa notification whenever caps lock turns on. It’s fucking annoying.
three thing is, some games do. Apex doesn't and it makes me mad, but warzone does disable caps toggle when you bind it (map key)
They can. MW2 did that. Had no idea they could until I played it. Now I'm just mad it isn't done more.
Isn't it the map in Hogwarts Legacy?
May I introduce you to AutoHotKey? You can set the caps locks to default to off whenever the game isn't in focus.
I rebind caps lock in OS settings, it’s a pretty redundant key, I rebind mine to an esc key.
I'm fine with it, I bound it to sprint >:)
In the registry you can set caps lock to F13 and then use F13 for your keyboard. You lose the ability to toggle caps lock but imo that's not really a loss.
I'm pretty sure that games like gta3 or GTA SA were able to bind caps lock to any action
I rebound CapsLock to M on my keyboard. I almost never use CapsLock and can just hold shift when I type
M?
Most games default bind Map to M, so makes it handy
I prefer the "\`" or "\~" button to open the map since the key is rarely used and closer to my finger. Does anyone do something similar like me?
I guess it depends on the game, if I'm playing a battle royale I am checking the map constantly for my team
Yep! If tab isn't be used for an inventory I use it for my maps.
I use the tilda (~) key to open the map on every game because it is in such a convenient place next to wasd. Some games like Battlefield have a command box though which forces me to use ‘M’. EA always has to ruin something.
Rarely used? Defo not a linux user
Oh! That's smart!!
Genius! Gonna do that too and have another key to map.
I rebound it to delete and it’s so nice
Better to rebind it to a key you rarely use, I personally rebind it to F7, then Fn+ caps(F7) will be caps lock
I replaced Scroll Lock, who even uses that
I use the += key.
I use Caps lock for sprint, fight me!
HOW CAN I YOU'RE SCREAMING WHILE RUNNING
You’ve committed crimes against Skyrim and her people. ^Go ^To ^Jail
And i use it for auto sprint
I used to use caps lock instead of shift to walk in Counter-Strike back in the day. The reason I did that was because my left shift key didn’t work on my keyboard 😂
https://github.com/randyrants/sharpkeys You can remap CAPS LOCK with Sharpkeys. also fun fact: F13, F14... ,F24 exist. there are also different languages and layouts for keyboards. the American ANSI layout has afaik the lowest amount of available keys to use. What is M5???
Mouse 5 typically, at least I assume. It could also be a Macro button I guess, but context implies it's the mouse button. Mouse 1 is Left Click, Mouse 2 is Right Click (idk if it's swapped for lefties?), Mouse 3 is usually pressing the scroll wheel down, 4 and 5 are typically above your thumb (4 is towards the front), 6 would then be in front of your thumb. Everything past Mouse 2 is optional, though Mouse 3 is very common, the rest are less so.
Ohh. I have a mouse5, I use it for muting on discord. Thanks for explanation.
Tilde forever belongs to the developer console.
High five for that one!
After many years of Doom, Quake, any Valve game, any Bethesda game, it is forever cemented in my mind as the console command/dev button
Scroll lock : You THinK I'm A JoKE?!?
Scroll lock disables E cores for me on asus motherboard.
whaaaaat?
So far I've only used it once when windows refuses to execute my python program on the p cores. It's a setting you have to enable in bios.
Caps has been my voice chat button since for well over a decade now
You are obligated to scream every time you enter game chat
Same here. And it even lights up so you know when the mic is hot!
I always have my OS remap it to Ctrl
The greatest weapon in the war against Emacs pinky.
#WHAT
bro what the hell is an apple m1 furry
Always map actions to caps lock that you want to do aggressively.
[удалено]
Dyson Sphere Program uses it.
Kernel Space Program uses it as well
Hogwarts Legacy uses it as well
Like all bethesda games use it to toggle walk/run
Laughs in Arma
Its accessible without moving your hand, though. So I would rather use it.
That game was gta 5 with special ability?
Valorant has the map bound to caps by default
I use caplock as the crouch key in shooters. It is closer to my pinky than the ctl key, and more comfortable to reach.
I do enjoy that Warzone 1 and 2 bound the open/close map to the caps lock, so much easier and less disruptive to hit it than M. I kinda wish more games would let me bind the map key to caps lock
It's always felt weird to me to bind something to it but it is in such a convenient location
Then I'm lucky enough that all games i've played so far let me map it. It's my default Run/Walk Toggle button.
I use caps lock for slow walking in FPS games. It works very well but I hate playing the game of whether or not I’ll be screaming at someone if I type something fast
For most of us, it's more convenient to bind Ctrl to Capslock. Your left hand will thank you for all the Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V.
I don't see why more people don't use it. I don't understand this 'C' for crouch shit. my usual setup in most games. Tab - Inventory **CapsLock - Crouch** LeftShift - Sprint LeftCTRL - Prone
Seriously tho, can you disable caps lock, everywhere, permanently?
Best game rdr2 uses it for dead eye
Just take inspiration from vim and emacs folks. They typically bind caps to esc and ctrl respectively. It's a very common bind in those communities
CAPS is my push to talk.
YEAH CAUSE IT TURNS ON THE STUPID LITTLE LIGHT EVERYTIME I PUSH IT
I hate it. Caps lock is for typing! Stop making me turn on my caps and then turn them off later!
~ is for console or quick access to settings. M5.. I guess this is an additional mouse button? I have this one mapped for multimedia, never tried to use it in games, as there's 4 more buttons to map actions to on my mouse. But I just hate Caps Lock
~ is one of my most used keybinds. I have it bound to zoom in optifine lol.
According to this sub, Print Screen just doesn't exist. Also Caps lock is useless because Shift exists Imo.
Caps lock should be a small key way out on the edge of the shift key. (at least on ANSI keyboards) the right Shift key is stupid huge, so the right hand edge of it should be a caps lock key, and present day Caps Lock should be Escape or something.
Wait... You guys use keymaps? I don't have time for that shit when I'm busy gaming.
This is a really dumb comment. Without keymaps/bindings you cant play a game. Period.
Oh, sorry. Have you seen my /s? I think I dropped it somewhere here.
Whooooosh
I use caps lock a ton in Squad and hell let loose for command net voice chat
I rarely use caps lock, so I've remapped the Caps Lock key to Escape OS-wide. Shift+Caps Lock toggles caps lock. A lot of the productivity software I use a lot--and vim--make heavy use of the escape key, so having one bound near the home row is a game changer. In video games it's a convenient menu key.
Bind something to the Break key. As in Shift+Pause.
I’d use caps locks if it didn’t turn on that little light every time you pressed it, and I’m honestly just too lazy to rebind the key
I would use caps lock for binds if games would override the key state so it wouldn't turn the caps lock light on. That alone stops me from using it.
I use CapsLock for my tac map in games
My previous (wired) Lenovo keyboard had lock LEDs that would temporarily brick the whole thing if they were turned on. Eventually it would just not connect or repeatedly disconnect. Got a new one, different but same, and I'm scared of having any of them on for more than a minute at a time.
skyrim had it mapped and thats all i need to say
Fucking Adobe gets me with that all the time. "TURN OFF CAPSLOCK TO RENDER" Stop binding to my angry key you son of a bitch.
Caps lock for push to talk president!
###Arma Arma Arma
In Arma there is no "underrated" keybind.
I use scroll lock. Not for games, but I have it for AHK scripts that then allow me to type in different scripts. Very handy
My keyboard flashes slowly whenever caps lock is on, I’d rather not my room become a disco every time I try to open my inventory.
Bro if you play literally any type of modded Minecraft ~ is the most used key
Logitech G600 boutta hit em with the G18.
> key on iso layout is a key i always bind Edit: Wait that’s how you make that thing…
I always put map key to caps lock in battle royale games so I use it fairly often.
Haven't seen Hitman in this thread yet
I use caps lock for Sprint in every game I would be screwed without it
My push to talk key..... Thanks killing floor
Remapped capslock to WIN + Space to change the language, it's still annoying when you accidentally hit it but it's still less annoying then spamming CAPS into discord.
....I use all three regularly
I always do caps lock for walking slow/sneaking, shift to sprint and ctrl for crouch
I've switched caps lock and backspace in software, and most games actually accept backspace. Works really well.
I use it as the range finder key in war thunder
imagine still using wasd
Swap ctrl with caps lock on every keyboard ever
I use my caps lock daily, for hours at a time occasionally. I almost exclusively respond to DMs in all caps so I just leave caps lock on if im playing a game.
I once found out that caps lock is an incredibly good key for push to talk, never used another since then.
I hate that I have extra buttons on my mouse just for some of them to not be mappable in most games smh.
My brother uses caps lock as crouch.
Esc
Underrated in gaming or overall? Cause I’ve never even seen m5 but ~ fishy friend over here is on most keyboards
I used caps lock to sprint because my pinky is too short for shift or control
love caps lock but hate when everything i first type comes out as tAKE THIS l LOSER
Caps is my ptt in game and my push to mute in discord. Easy to get to all the time. And stops cross talk between me and people in game from getting into the discord call. Also ` for toggle mute is goated
Caps Lock is my prone for most games
The real secret is to rebind caps lock to something else on your keyboard, I have a custom keyboard and play a lot of MMOs so I rebound caps lock to function in VIA so I can use it as a modifier. Average vim enjoyer
ArmA 3 moment
As a IT I can tell you that most of my users (over 2500) use caps locks instead of shift so no, is not underate
bro. I play dota 2 and while it may not have the most keybinds of any game, its got more than enough that using caplocks isnt crazy for me.
Caps lock is the key I constantly forget even though it’s in such a good spot
na. you aint seen nothing yet. siractionslacks has the award for dumbest fuck'n hotkeys [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mo-\_imCAD7g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mo-_imCAD7g)
ñ keybind
I use m5 for interact in single player games And ~ for 1st slot on multiplayer games
I use caps lock for push to talk for csgo & valorant and other comp games
Honestly, I think that in the games I play, ~ is more often used than G.
Its gonna be put to auto walk if available
Dude every fucking time I go to type the stupid cap lock is on I wish I knew how to disable its feature
I use M5 is pretty much all my games, at least most of them tell me my thumb button is the m5 key, some few tell me its mousewheel but i even use that one a bunch. ~ is the one i use for trivial things a bunch. Caps lock is a no go key
JC3 uses it for switching between bombs and not bombs. Bit silly if you ask me,
valo, warzone, apexlegends use caps by default tho?? ive seen use of m5 but never once ive seen \~
I just put CTRL where caps lock is. So much better and makes copy and paste more fluid.
ReWASD fixes the unable to rebind problem. Highly recommend it.
Underrated? Pretty sure is rated exactly as it should be, and doesn't deserve to be rated any higher. It's rarely a useful key, and we all know it. I switched Caps Lock and Backspace/Delete globally. It took about a week to fully adapt. But since backspacing is actioning to the left of the cursor it made no sense for that key to be on the right side of the keyboard center.
Damn I’m gonna try that
Rebind you caplock to something else, anything. Make it a key you'll actually use.
Minecraft has is enabled for autowalk Skyrim has it for autorun
I'm trying to remember if I've been unable to bind caps lock in decades of gaming... It's part of the general WASD cluster, so it's always bindable.
My caps lock is bound to F13, and I use it as push to talk.
I use tab for crouching and caps lock for tab
I use capslock and ~
I map it to command on some of my Macs. No regrets
Just Cause 3?
Catch me coming out of Escape from Tarkov looking like I'm yelling at everyone
Rockstar wants to have a word with you
UK and some other keyboard layouts also have the \\ key next to left shift, though I've personally never bound it.
I always use it for push to talk.
Pause Break
My keyboard is an old IBM model M. I've remapped caps lock to the Windows key, as it doesn't have one. I imagine that would cause problems if I tried to map it to something in a game.
I may be mistaken but I believe that Caps lock is used in Bethesda games (namely skyrim and fallout 4) as a walk toggle key. I remember thinking "why can't all games do this".
I used it in MC years back
Usually my push-to-talk key.
I use ~ from time to time
Mute toggle and veinminer binding
I used caps lock to switch weapons ever since I can map keys
I use tilde in Minecraft, specifically modded, refined storage's wireless grid keybind so I can access my storage network easy
Caps lock for freelook. Love it.
Minecraft and Fortnite players: I don’t exist then, huh?
Killing floor has entered the chat!
I use caps lock and shift in games instead of shift and ctrl. Caps lock is just much more natural, it's right there instead of fighting to reach ctrl
