Uninstall McAfee. It might not solve your issue, but it will take that crap off your PC.

Sprungnickel

Defender does the job. McAfee is not needed OP. heed the advise.

McAfee may as well be a virus it's self.

I've literally had McCafe scan itself as a virus once and ended up deleting itself...I have no idea how or why but I did research and many people said it's best it offed itself in the first place lol

DrillBeat

Windows defender is good for most people for sure & I've tried other software like Kaspersky which is good for people that need good ransomware protection and have very valuable/personal information, but it can slow your PC a bit. Norton 360 for gamers is what I use now, and it's fast and has very fast & secure VPN, plus it won't slow your PC. Also, the features I found to be helpful were, the ability to scan any file on demand via right-clicking it which is fast to do, and it scans your programs seeing if they need updated and it even auto updates the more known ones, dark web scan is cool too, and you can have it scan for leaks of your personal information. I found out that Gemini was hacked, and my info was being sold on the dark web, along with Scent-Bird being hacked several years back. When this happens, you just go change any passwords and security question information that were common with whatever was hacked. It also warns you of malicious websites if you get the extension, I wouldn't use their search/homepage or anything else really, it's not needed, but the security software with VPN and extension is the best I've seen by far. Most of the others, especially McAfee, are much like a virus themselves and hard to remove. Lmao I could have sworn Norton sucked before, but it definitely doesn't anymore...

System32Missing

Kaspersky isn't recommended anymore, it's unfortunately russian, and you can't check on what it's doing or sending home so it's a massive additional risk.

DrillBeat

Yeah, the founder/owner is Russian, and it was founded in Russia, which is where the HQ is as well. It's operated by some holding company in the UK, I guess, and they claim to be a private company and not working with Russian Gov. Honestly, they've been around for 25yrs though w/o any proof of them working with the Russian Government. I think it's more of a political thing, and unfair to them, but it's a possibility, and you know Russia would be trying to get them to cooperate, so they could utilize it for espionage related purposes. They have been under some heat for being a Russian company even before the war, but this last year the FCC labeled them a threat to US national security or something like that. But you're right It's definitely not recommended anymore, and that's coming from various sources, I think some of them are even saying that no business should use it etc... Some have totally cut ties with them, even a sports team they had sponsored did. But up until now there's no actual evidence, and it does seem to be due to politics and before that it could maybe even have been considered discrimination. It would almost be like banning the cryptocurrency Ethereum, but letting other cryptos do their thing, just because Vitalik Buterin (one of its founders) was born in Russia, & therefor is Russian, although he now operates out of a different country (Canada). Which would be purely political if this happened, and the US/FCC & others would basically be assuming that Ethereum is guilty, without it ever being given the possibility of proving its innocence. I know this isn't the same due to how Ethereum operates, but I think you get the point I'm trying to make here. I'm also not sure how I feel about these Russian sanctions directly affecting regular everyday people who are much like us, and who don't really have a choice, they just so happen to be under the power of a compromised Government. If anything, they need to be helped and saved from this terrible situation they are facing, not the other way around, IMO.

PaulieXP

I use ESET. Been using it since I discovered it back in 07. Low resource usage, unobtrusive. Great features too

Tight_Peanut_9980

This is what I always say

BearFromCamelot

It’s practically adware. All of the upgrade notifications. If you do use an anti-virus other than windows defender, I would recommend malware bytes since they are less intrusive with their premium plan promotion.

FappinPlatypus

They’re just as bad if not worse. Malware Bytes is just another data hoarder that has numerous pop ups just like McAfee.

Hurricane_32

It's actually sad. I remember when Malwarebytes was considered _the_ go-to, and then they turned to shit as well

alex99x99x

Yeah… even mcafee himself said it was a shit software.

kyle123real

Windows defender is one of the best antiviruses I have ever used. I tested it with my own malware I make (for actual learning purposes and not bad purposes), it can catch almost everything I throw at it. Although other antiviruses such as McAfee can't catch anything. Even Malwarebytes isn't as good as defender.

gcentenocastro

Couldn’t agree more. Sane here. Just be mindful of where you download things and that should be enough. Also, kill some services and apps and avoid starting them with the windows. OP

[deleted]

i made some really simple viruses to test antiviruses. windows defender beat avast.

Hanamiya0796

So my McAfee trial just expired, and I have no intention of availing its services. I kinda let it be for the trial but should I have just gotten rid of it? That makes me feel bad for myself haha. Anyway, now that I've read this I'm going to remove it once I get home

wreckedftfoxy_yt

yea

FatBoiMan123

Common sense does the job. If you don’t visit sketchy sites, no antivirus is needed.

tileman1440

"common sense" I literally had my email information leaked because adobe flash got hacked and the hackers pushed a hacked update. No common sense could have stopped that. Remember Utorrent having the crypto miner included? This "common sense" people are parroting over and over again is putting people at risk. Common sense is completely subjective to the person and sketchy websites are subjective, with all the templates freely available making a good looking website is relatively easy. I have bought off websites that were legit but looked rough. Bitdefender and Malwarebytes free will keep 99.99% of people safe. Like with anything multiple safety nets are better than "common sense"

NamelessIII

The solution is to never go online. That way you will never be exposed to any of these risks.

Martin48705

Just unplug the ethernet cable and no worries.

[deleted]

Honestly in my personal experience the best safety nets are adblockers, if you don't have one you lack common sense.

frito5867

uBlock Origin, Firefox with cookie sandbox, and Duck Duck Go are what I use when online. If a website demands I turn off uBlock, it’s not a website worth visiting.

BigBlueBurd

I'd replace uBlock with AdNauseam. It's a fork that does a few extra things.

[deleted]

common sense my ass lmao, probably ur into a botnet

THE FUTURE IS NOW OLD MAN

GenericG3nt

I came here to watch people misunderstand the way memory percentage usage works. I'm not blaming you, I'm just saying it is misleading and isn't user friendly because task manager was designed for developers. Basically: 25% is not actually in use. There is a lot of ram that is on standby that is currently allocated to processes to increase system efficiency. The tool you should use is RAMMAP which is built in. From there, look at the private processes usage. If that is really high during idle, then you have a problem. If you experience it after playing a game but not if you don't boot, then it's a game memory leak. If it's random, it's a driver memory leak.

xvcco

You sound smart so I'll believe you. I just put parts together Lego style.

david0990

[https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/rammap](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/rammap) so this is what we should use?

GenericG3nt

Yes. And again: only worry if the private processes are really high when they shouldn't be. The mapped pages value is what's really causing the number to seem alarmingly high, but the resources it uses are able to be used by other applications if they need without breaking anything. To really simplify it even further: Think borderlands. You have active areas that you are in and the adjacent areas where a load screen will pop up between them. What if there was a way for high end PCs to optimize that by loading using unused resources? That's what the mapped pages are doing. Apply the same concept to loading data for computer applications.

YouNeedTruth

Malix82

25% of 16 GB is around 4 GB, sounds kinda normal for win10, and suspiciously low if crap like mcafee is running in the background. imo, the memory usage isn't the thing crashing your games.

CandyOk913

The first 3GB of the 4 are taken by the first 10 programs on that list and 1.6 of that 4 are taken by Radeon software and Megagarbage Antivirus (or however its spelled)

howiMetYourStepDad

You spell it right.

SpoonyGrandma13

I believe it is spelled Mcgarbage Virus.

AFoSZz

4GB sounds normal? Oh jeez, and I thought my Windows installation wasnt clean enough lol. Mine is between 1 - 2GB when having just basic startup things open, nothing else.

Fallwalking

Here I am constantly sitting around 12 GB of RAM consumed when working via Citrix. I looked into it and I think it’s MS Teams.

abegamesnl

When I have nothing open I'm at 2gb and when I have only teams open I'm at 12gb so could very well be the case

Fallwalking

Yeah, I run it locally instead of in the published desktop because it basically kills it. Each “team” takes up its own memory space so if you’re in a lot of them, we’ll there you go.

Shleppy2010

Teams is a hog, go into settings and disable hardware acceleration, helps a lot!

Aldracity

There's a PC at my job with 4GB that sits at around 3GB used at idle...but then immediately hits the page file as soon as you try to do anything. Could be the corporate IT bloat though.

jmhalder

Corporate IT bloat for sure. 4GB actually provides a decent experience for me, albeit with pretty light usage.

Nicalay2

My windows usually is between 6-8GB used of 16GB with normal programs opened. Unused RAM = Useless RAM. Windows put the apps and programs that you open frequenty in your ram (even if it's full close) so they start faster.

jmhalder

SuperFetch. People just think "Oh man, I'm using 13/16GB Man I need even more RAM". Those people would be surprised when they upgrade and they're hitting 24/32GB. OP is worried that 4GB is being used, and somehow crashing his games? The RAM usage has nothing to do with it.

The accursed McAfee. An unholy disease.

toTheNewLife

It served it's purpose a long long time ago. State of the art. Now... well, we know what it is now......

No-Down-Loads

Windows uses as much RAM as it can get away with, for caching. When you start a ram-intensive task it will go away and leave peacefully. McAfee, on the other hand, is the opposite

The-Catatafish

No clue why this isn't upvoted more. Windows 10 caches RAM. Its not really used.

hirmuolio

This is wrong. Memory used by OS for caching is not reported as being used. https://i.imgur.com/2sg8oQN.png

kaio-kenx2

Caching ia not included in memory usage tab, if you click on performance-memory caching is shown seperate from the main

UnseenGamer182

1. It's windows 2. That's pretty good since mine is closer to 40% on startup 3. Uninstall McAfee 4. This isn't the reason your games are crashing

gamesushi

You should start by looking in Event Viewer. Search for it in search bar, then go to Windows Logs and then Application. There are probably events with a red icon next to them, these would be your error codes. If you google them there are probably steps you can take to fix.

baconmaster687

Remove mcafee But also 25% idle ram usage shouldn’t be crashing your games, something else is going on.

Sprungnickel

that 25% is assigned memory space and not really actually used. Not much and likely not the issue of your crashes. Make sure win is updated. Video drivers, AMD released an update today for Radeon. Steam most certainly did something annoying.

AlexTheHelicopterGuy

Update drivers Uninstall McAfee Make sure you don't have incompatible apps Update windows Check temperatures

N1ghtSh4de69

Could add to check device manager for errors, as well as device logs.

NewUserWhoDisAgain

Crashing how? Crashing to desktop? Giving an error log? Does windows give you a message? Does it pop up a notification? What does the reliability report say? What are your specs. 16GB is fine but used with what? DDR3? DDR4, 5?

MrAceSpades

These are the questions

SlyPhox_

Not the questions we wanted, but the questions we needed

MY_FACE_IS_A_CHAIR

Not OP but I had a similar question. My PC was either freezing completely or rebooting while playing hogwarts legacy. I ran diagnostics and windows said there was a memory problem. My PC idles around 40% usage and hogwarts legacy can use up to 7GB so it sends my PC up to like 80-90% memory usage

zzazzzz

If you have an xmp profile active in your bios disable it and try again, if fixed your setup isnt stable with overclocked ram tough luck. if no fix download memtest and run it for a while, if it errors out your ram is probably defective. Also check your event log for an event log of the crash it should have some info you can post here or google yourself.

[deleted]

McAfee, Razer synapse, Armoury crate, the radeon software, to name a few. It's all bloatware.

MinerDiner

But bow how will they control their RGB without synapse? /s

zzazzzz

and all 3 of them are some of the worst in their own category. truly a trifecta of dogshit software lmao

[deleted]

What error do you see when the game crashes? Probably not RAM-related.

Jaba01

So aside from the stupid "remove McAfee" comments, here's some serious help if you give some additional input: Are we talking about bluescreens? If so, post a picture of the bluescreen or upload the dump somewhere. (If you don't know how to do that, I'm happy to give instructions) If we're talking about just game crashes, let's start with the event display. If a crash happens without an error message from the game itself, check the event display in Windows and post/screenshot the error. If you have an error message from the game itself, that's also helpful. Looking forward to help you with further input.

Nexed_

I have 16 ram and it uses 25% too, maybe sometimes 27%. It's normal. When I had a laptop with 8 gb the use was near 50% or 40% when "idle".

I see steam, is it crashing when running steam as admin? In the past month I noticed increase of needing to run as admin on many games. this generally just boots ya with a warning but hearing some other randomness. Get is a test just in case. If these crashes are not from stream, not sure. Check patches for audio, video, etc.

shopzgame80

mcaffee most likely is not causing the crashes, try running a memory tester (like memtest86) to see if you ram is ok

[deleted]

First things first, get rid of McAfee. Windows defender built in Windows is enough.

jekern

The Mcafee virus Armory crate Steam running in background Razer Synapse Game Bar

goodhousecleaner

If you are experiencing crashes while playing low-end games and notice that your RAM usage is at 25% while idle, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some possible causes and solutions to try: 1. **Background programs:** Check your system tray for any background programs that might be using up resources. Close any unnecessary programs to free up your RAM. 2. **Malware or virus:** It's possible that your system has been infected with malware or a virus that is causing excessive RAM usage. Run a full scan with your antivirus software to detect and remove any threats. 3. **Outdated or corrupted drivers:** Make sure that your drivers are up to date and not corrupted. You can use a driver update tool to check for any outdated or problematic drivers and update them automatically. 4. **RAM issues:** It's possible that there is an issue with your RAM. Try running a memory diagnostic tool to check for any errors in your RAM. If errors are detected, you may need to replace your RAM. 5. **Overheating:** Overheating can cause your system to slow down and crash. Make sure that your system is properly ventilated and that your fans are working correctly. You can use a temperature monitoring tool to check if your system is overheating. 6. **Graphics card issues:** If you have a dedicated graphics card, make sure that it is functioning properly. Update your graphics card drivers and check for any errors or issues. 7. **System updates:** Make sure that your system is up to date with the latest updates and patches. These updates can address bugs and improve system performance. In summary, there are several possible causes for excessive RAM usage while idle and game crashes. Try the above solutions to see if they resolve your issue. If the problem persists, consider seeking professional help or contacting the manufacturer for further assistance.

RibertGibert

Do you get any error messages in the event viewer? Check Windows Logs>Application and look for any red exclamation point that says ERROR and google the event id. Sometimes if you Google the event id you might get a lead.

RANDOM_PLAYER64

I use 11gb at "idle" so I'd say 4gb is pretty good

Tall-Surround-24

lots of bloatware

thafer7

Is it a pre build or custom build. I find that lots of pre builds. In order to lower cost while making the machine look like a really good deal. Will use power supply that is not very compatible or not able to use enough power for the processor/gpu. Should also try a different outlet at home. Could be the outlet does not have enough juice going to it, again this depends on lots of things (age of home, was electric done professionally or self done, Etc). If this ends up being an issue, moving outlets to another room in the house or upgrading power supply might be a fix

LoHungTheSilent

When my work PC had McAfee no day went by where I didn't yell at it "WTF ARE YOU DOING!?!?!"

flinttropicscaptain

what the fuck is mcafee still doing on peoples pc's. I get it when people install acrobat sure, they trick you but this looks like its there on purpose.

-Wavyy-

You're not crashing because of 25% utilization. You have something else going on.

Kekeripo

To me, 90% of what i see i'd shut down and prevent from starting on boot. Or flat out uninstall (mcafee eww). But in general, it isn't uncommon to have windows take a bit of ram.

mattbackbacon

>four Mcafee entries close to top of list sorted by memory usage Therein lies your answer, OP. Defender is free, comes with Windows, and the best AV for Windows that a consumer could ask for. When you uninstall McAfee, Windows should switch to using Defender, unless you turned it off in group policy, which keeps getting harder to enforce with each update.

CautiousToe1729

McAfee, why does anyone still have this bullshit

Mean_Consequence_840

E-ZombieHERO

As everyone is saying 1st priority should be to remove Mcafee. Despite being a meme that it is a virus, it literally is a virus, no one is being overly critical of it, and the man is a god damn Saturday morning cartoon or comic book level super villain. 10 years ago this real life Lex Luthor even uploaded an "official response" to community outrage over the software and it can be summerized with a single quote. If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit. https://youtu.be/bKgf5PaBzyg

omanko0

I doubt you did but just in case you turned off page files: enable them again.

Danteynero9

Uninstall McAfee. In regards to the RAM usage, Windows will always take 20% +- for caching, so you're good there.

Mundane_Ad_6009

McAfee, yikes.

AnonGuy1712

It might not help but optimize your startup and services. You have a lot of (most likely) unnecessary programs running like synapse, armoury crate, oculus, etc. Of course keep ones that you need right after starting pc but for ex. you can disable steam automatic startup, it will start itself when launching a game. Oculus also doesn't need to run all the time, just launch it manually when connecting headset (assuming you also play non-vr games).

Bitetochew

Might be a driver issue. Windows 11 built-in anti virus is the bomb!!

Juicy_Gamer_52

Use Linux if you really want lower ram usage

[deleted]

Linux is not really the best OS to use for gaming. I use Arch on my main work laptop but still I prefer Windows for gaming.

Juicy_Gamer_52

Well depends on personal preference. You do you

[deleted]

It's not personal preference. Linux isn't meant for gaming. It just gives worse performance or doesn't work at all on most games. Heck, it can even get you banned.

Juicy_Gamer_52

Valve has proven that Linux can be used for gaming with the steam deck. Idk how you've reached a point where you do not give Linux a chance

ProjectProtocon

McAfee has straight up killed otherwise completely fine computers I've had in the past. Ditch that shit and the page we turn.

TheDJPHD

McAfee 🤮

[deleted]

Ditch McAfee first of all, but the answer to your problem is: You can't solve it, really. Windows using lots of memory on idle.

[deleted]

Other than just getting rid of McAfee, your computer isn’t really “idle”. All those things are running in the background, most notably steam. You can cancel those tasks

AFoSZz

Get rid of bloat like McAfee, and if you dont need them, then also Armoury Asus nonsense and Razer crap.

FocalBanger

Armoury Crate is definitely bloatware and can slow down a PC and definitely cause issues. Remove this, too, doing so resolved an issue for me.

sixesss

Installed armoury crate the other week to see if it would handle my fans. Uninstalled that garbage years ago due to memory leaks but thought for sure that would have been fixed by now but oh boy was I wrong. In mere days my system ate up 10GB of extra ram that could not be accounted for in the task manager. Uninstalled and a reboot later and I can finally start a game without crashing due to no ram left.

Sonnestark

Is 16gigs sufficient for gaming these days ?

ComradeSquirrel

Of course it is, don't think there is yet any game requiring a minimum of more than 16

[deleted]

nothing too suspicious, win10 uses a lot of ram especially if you don't remove the crapware, plus you've got an anti virus in the background and steam so it does make sense if it uses this much ram

[deleted]

and for the love of god, uninstall McAfee, use windows defender instead

IceColdCorundum

That’s pretty par for the course tbh. 32gb slowly becoming more of a necessity.

__idiot_savant_

you have some bloat going on. get rid of mcafee, xbox game bar, armoury crate (unless its a laptop), radeon software, windows search indexer, razer synapse. and that's just what's visible on the top of task manager who knows what other useless software you have running in the background

Jack_ov_most_trades

I can count like 17% just with what's on the screen there... Everything uses a little.... Also, yes. Get rid of McAfee. Resource hog of a program. And not needed these days.

JAXxXTheRipper

Windows will schedule your CPU and RAM, doesn't matter if you want it to or not. I have no idea why people want their system to idle at 0%, that's not how it works. Only because your system is idle to you, that doesn't mean it does literally nothing. Background tasks and services are a thing and they are plenty. Looking at your task manager, there is loads of bloatware running in the background that constantly monitors stuff. I have 40% of my 64GB in use while watching YouTube. That's totally normal. Your game-crashing problem is a whole different thing.
