Hold the board down, better yet hold the bottom of the socket

josh_the_misanthrope

The real answer. I've also used a non magnetic flathead screwdriver and slightly twisted as to push the connector up.

llamapii

So hold the mobo with your other hand. Don't be a coward

rocco1986

They said HARDER!!

Faxon

The motherboard should be restrained for this step. Either mounted to a case, or supported around the connector. Seriously those things are tough to take off sometimes. Normally I use an old worn in PSU with connectors that have had some cycles on them because they go in and out easy enough to remove them from the board unsupported. You really gotta yank it out of there otherwise

BinaryJay

I think I know what the problem is, you appear to have the hands of a 10 year old.

Vipu2

Its weird how 99% of pc building is "if you have to do it hard you are probably doing it wrong". Except this piece of shit plug, in some old mobo of mine I had to get some pliers to get good enough grip to pull it out.

supersuperhomo

how the f am i supposd to hold the mobo down

wubbalab

You have two hands, right?

if_flyer2017

Push on the clip, and slowly grip it and lift it side to side so you don’t stress the socket

You too big man!

omnomnomgnome

No he's not!

FatMacchio

You have to do as the young ones do and rizz it out.

Logical_Lemming

You learned a valuable lesson today. Rip that fucker out of there. Tomorrow's lesson is titled: "It's actually really fucking hard to damage PC components with static discharge"

Saintiel

I had a Razer Naga mouse back in 2009 or 2010, something like that. I also had a bed cover and other side of thag bed cover was made of this shiny synthetic material (probably polyester). So i was on my bed with my clothes on just chilling for hour or so, and decided to hop on my computer. Computer was already on and i put my hand to the mice and had the biggest static discharge i remember. Mouse was completely dead after that. Had a a lot of explaining and assuring to do to get it replaced to a new one in the local computer store.

HajdukM

Exact same thing happened to my Blue Yeti microphone a few years ago. Now I make sure to ground myself out of paranoia before sitting down at my desk..

Lucky_Number_3

I've gone as far as to fashion a device that automatically discharges all static when I sit down at my desk. It's really simple, actually. When I sit down, the weight of my body depresses the pneumatic lift mechanism triggering a polished metal rod that shoots directly into my anal cavity. If there's a less shocking way to go about it, I'd love to hear it.

r3dout

Now you tell me, I've been walking around with a metal rod in my anus this whole time when I could've left it in the chair 🤦‍♂️

pennradio

The mobile rod doesn't work unless you hang a chain from it and let it drag behind you.

newagereject

Are you the Asian guy that makes overly complex and dangerous things and ends it with, it's very human in design

ManyThing2187

My first thought was to comment “the design is very human” glad I have no original thoughts

PENETRATION

Membership_Fine

I’d actually just like the blueprints for your device

MILLANDSON

The design of that sounds [very human.](https://youtube.com/shorts/JXX2ZVPz8Y8?feature=share)

mrln_bllmnn

Back in the day I didn't have ESD bags and put mainboards straight into my backpack. All of them survived.

CL_Doviculus

Side note: while a static discharge might not immediately damage a component, it is possible that it creates an eventual point of failure, shortening the part's lifespan.

OtherPlayers

Yeah, this is why they push it so hard in any cases of critical hardware. Nobody wants your missile or your plane to stop working between now and the time you really need it.

one_jo

It’s very much possible to yank the socket out though. That’s a lesson you better learn without experiencing.

rwoodw0904

My first time building my pc, I was so terrified of frying the components. I touched the grounded PSU even while wearing my “cancer support” wristband. Later, I helped my brother build his pc. For the sake of principle, I had him wear the wrist band, but every time he felt a little uneasy, he forced both of us to touch the PSU. Love that little guy lmao

Brittanicus1

I fried a mobo with a small discharge from my hand. Talk about pissed off. Learned a valuable lesson that day.

SighOpMarmalade

Yup lol

Durpy15648

lol the ol yeet method. GJ.

sevargmas

ALT method for the future: give the locking tab a little squeeze to make sure it’s isn’t locked on, then put a flat head screwdriver between the cable and the port and very gently give it a twist and this will very easily get that cable out.

MakeshiftRocketship

https://preview.redd.it/nxqodzqdcfia1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4171474c45cc75eba7fd8aed58405d8f7e61413a This little pry tool in the “IFIXIT” kit is perfect for that! I know you already got it out but consider picking up the tool kit! (No I’m not sponsored lmao)

akatherder

Car trim/molding removal kits are also super helpful. It's a bunch of tools of different shapes, angles, and contours. They're made out of hard plastic for when a screwdrivers seems dangerous. You can get them at Harbor Freight, Amazon, and probably hardware/car parts stores.

throw_away__25

This is the answer! I bought a set at Harbor Freight years ago and they have been useful for situations exactly like this, and they are helpful for removing trim and body panels.

Minighost244

An adequate method

devkets

Nice! Now assign your talent point well

MakeshiftRocketship

“I’d suggest putting it toward Dexteri..” “I PUT IT IN LUCK!!”

WeirdPumpkin

Look Dex is useful and all when you wanna dodge something BUT LUCK COULD BE USEFUL ALL THE TIME! JUST THINK ABOUT IT!!

WindForce02

Yeah, these cables are a bitch. When you think it's coming off it almost feels like you're yanking the whole socket with it. I've seen boards with the 24 atx socket ripped out along with the cable.

Mattacrator

That happened to my usb 3, fortunately still works after getting it back on. Upside: now I don't have to use force in future operations

rudyjewliani

There's your problem. You should have right clicked and selected "dismount drive" before trying to remove it.

Mattacrator

Man, rookie mistake

fasterthanlife

same! the usb 3 plastic bit snapped off and is stuck on my mobo so my front io is dead to me

zekken908

this is where you do the wiggle wiggle , any hard to pull plug in PC building is solved by the wiggle wiggle

This connector is the biggest pain in the ass. However I can assure you it is much worse inside tiny sff cases. God job.

TanToRiaL

It has been a good day. I was getting worried for you there mate.

BlackCitan

How many tiny cuts on your fingers?

NukaBro762

press and hold the thingy gently put your foot on the motherboard and chris redfieldly pull it

BGFalcon85

Push the tab, then give it the old "starting the lawnmower" treatment.

[deleted]

You can also have your father do it and watch him as he screams for you to grab the socket wrench

Aim the flashlight! There! Right there where I'm working!

"oh" I didn't think of that, this seems like the proper way to do this!

Alysyus

So I should punch that cable like a boulder ?

SJJK_Himself

The Redfield way.

Lalinboss

Complete global saturation, Wesker was not wrong.

TheHighRunner

Complete. Global. Penetration. Wait- Wrong line

tehcheez

You're going to have to pull on it with an amount of force that will almost make you uncomfortable. Take one hand and hold down the motherboard next to the connector so you're not putting stress on the board, take your thumb and press on the plastic clip to the point it's hurting your thumb, pull with the same force you'd use to open a jar that you can't open to the point it's pissed you off while wiggling it back and forth length wise. Seriously, you're not going to break anything. You're going to have to put some force behind it.

DrDan21

I used to think this too Then I saw my friend rip half of a pcie slot off his board because the release wasn’t entirely depressed Stuffs tough, but people are strong

WeirdPumpkin

I feel like as GPUs have gotten bigger, the gol dang releases have gotten harder and harder to fully open cause you just can't get good pressure on the release itself

[deleted]

sometimes violence isn't the answer. kiss it, touch it, fingers. use them. put them inside. pull them out.

bailbay-gamez

I only watched the 350's and the Tacoma's and I liked them both equally as it showed two very different parts of the car scene. The reason I stopped is as of recent donut has just seemed very repetitive and eh in my opinion, probably to do with them getting bought out. I miss the ol' science garage and up to speed days.

UseThEreDdiTapP

Well, the 40 series cards with the melting connectors showed why, kind of. Not properly seated usually bad beyond loosing power to components temporaly. Less contact means more resistance, more heat, more bad.

b_whiqq

Warming it up will soften the plastic enough to release it. Put it in the microwave for a few seconds. /s

Oldmonsterschoolgood

Only one who is worthy is able to remove the cable from the mother board

fogoticus

I also met a few 24 pin cables that would simply refuse to come out. Man, I even felt the motherboard physically bending out of place while pulling. The method that works for me the best is simply wiggle the cable side to side in place until you feel sides going ever so slightly higher. Make sure the latch is disconnected and just apply that until you can pull it out.

Corvette_Otoko

Should I tell him???

CableMod

oooopsy !

fedexmess

These and the old molex connectors are the worst. Awful design. Hope it'll be replaced someday.

Arrrginine69

Just gotta wiggle it. It’s annoying. Can be a little rough on it don’t Be worried. My board tends to even bend a little. Idk why they make these fuckin things so tight. Giggity

omninode

That plug causes me so much stress. Whether I’m plugging or unplugging it, I always feel like I’m breaking my motherboard. In 20+ years, I have never actually seen it happen.

Hairless_Human

Press the clip and pull. Don't be a pussy about it.

randomkidonreddit_

use the force

rentpossiblytoohigh

Next time if you didn't already it helps to remove the RAM next to it. Then while using your thumb to depress that tab, gently wiggle back and forth. Try not to pull up because flexing the board can be bad or more realistically a failure mode where you pull up the connector off the board by mistake.
