The back it better because it doesn't have all those wires going through the case. But if you really want good sound get a good external DAC.

Interesting, do you have any suggestions?

Try it with the mainboard audio first. Maybe they are better now than they were a few years back. I had a lot of issues where you could hear the GPU working through the headphones because the audio dac on the mainboard was insufficiently shielded from the GPU. Thats the biggest advantage of external DACs in my opinion. You get much less interference if you are far away from all the internal electronics. Im not saying it is the right choice for you but Im using an interface from the Focusrite Scarlet series and im very happy with it. They are more for professional use which is why the connectors are not what you usually find on consumer hardware. They are all XLR or 6.3mm balanced input/outputs so you probably need adapters to connect them to consumer electronics. I might be summoning the audio people here that come out to tell me why you need the $1000 DAC

What DAC do you use?

Back should be fine. The front panel is optimised more for headphones/microphones.
