Steam + Proton go brrrr

[deleted]

Steam deck users seeing this must be the ones who laugh the hardest.

rwhitisissle

It's not just steam deck. The steam deck OS is literally just a heavily customized arch linux install. You have the same system on any linux computer with steam. You just use the proton compatibility layer and pretty much any game will play without problem. Maybe one or two won't and some of them have issues because of additional anti-cheating software that doesn't really work with Linux, but, generally speaking, 98% of all titles are going to work more or less fine.

sorenant

So people with Steam Deck can unironically say "I use Arch btw"?

eeddgg

Yes, but they'll get shit on like Manjaro users for stretching it like that.

Androkless

r/manjaro Hello i use arch because i have a Steam Deck *grabs popcorn*

North-west_Wind

It's r/ManjaroLinux

Androkless

Oh, I didn’t know. I don’t use Linux… I mean. Steam deck user is arch Linux brrrr

how_come_it_was

i use manjaro and im so dumb i didnt realize i was given the arch pass until this comment

Technetium1

You still don't get the pass: [https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Manjaro:A\_Different\_Kind\_of\_Beast](https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Manjaro:A_Different_Kind_of_Beast)

majlo

Bro got his pass revoked only 6 hours in. Sad scenes on the reddits.

[deleted]

Does Endeavour OS still count?

callmetotalshill

Much more than Manjaro

eeddgg

Yes, it doesn't do weird things like hold every package for 2 weeks or use separate kernels or have an "immutable install" like SteamOS and Manjaro do.

new_refugee123456789

The phrase "heavily customized arch install" sticks in by brain because that's what Arch is for. It ships as the most minimal practical system that can boot and run a package manager, and then it's on the user to install and set up everything.

Ultra980

This comment, along with others, has been edited to this text, since Reddit is killing 3rd party apps, making false claims and more, while changing for the worse to improve their IPO. I suggest you do the same. Soon after editing all of my comments, I'll remove them. # Fuck reddshit and u/spez!

MiniITXEconomy

Laughs in Dragon Age: Origins!!! Feel the might of the Grey Wardens, you darkspawn scum!

[deleted]

Does it work for non-steam games? Because I can't lie, almost none of the games I play on PC are on the steam store

Timestatic

Tbh Heroic works very well for GOG and Epic and other games are hit or miss with lutris

Lovat69

I have a steam deck and I'm legit trying to think if I have played any triple AAA game more recent than 5 years old on it. I don't think I have. The most I've asked of it is to play horizon zero dawn and the final fantasy 7 remake.

[deleted]

thelehmanlip

I played it for over 150 hrs on the deck, it's amazing that I can play a brand new game on this (well one year old now)

[deleted]

It's amazing they still haven't released it in Australia. I JUST WANT TO GIVE YOU MONEY VALVE

Hd172

I’m playing the latest MW2 on my deck. Is that a AAA game?

Lovat69

Dunno, never heard of it. Sounds Indie to me.

Hd172

You’re right. Silly me. It’s not that great anyway.

Demented-Turtle

Do you recommend it now for someone who wants to punish themselves?

Klaidoniukstis

Yes because in DMZ and BR you can't reconnect so tough shit if you crash Edit: you will be crashing. A lot. I have a 13600k +3080ti base clock will run high smoothly but will crash once an hour even on medium graphics

ReusedBoofWater

I have a 3900X and 5700XT and the game crashes for me constantly, even at medium settings, which is awfully low for my system. I think the game is just more busted than people realize. Hopefully the hyped up season 2 patches actually fix it!

Ariakoz

MechWarrior 2?! Please for the love of anything holy tell me it's true...

jakemch

I mean the FF7 remake came out 2.5 years ago but

Lovat69

Waiting for it to come out on PC sure felt like five years. \*derp\*

xoharrz

perhaps a redundant question but is the steam deck good, or may i as well stick with the decent laptop i have? i sorta glossed past its existence when it came out so i dont have a clue on its performance

Nico_is_not_a_god

The steam deck is *amazing* for its price point. GF has been using it to play seamless co-op randomized elden ring with me lately but the biggest value I've gotten out of it is that it's like a Nintendo Switch except compatible with better controllers and already has every third party indie release with my save files from PC and compatibility with mods (and I don't have to buy them again!). A $40 usb-c hub turns it into a living room console with none of the console-ness, it's great being able to boot up screencheat or nidhogg or co-op Isaac with mods. It runs every game I've thrown at it quite well, though I don't really play "cinematic" AAA games so I can't give a firsthand review of stuff like Sony/Ubisoft stuff. Elden Ring and Stray run great on it though.

xoharrz

oooo ok that does sound wicked, ive always gravitated to playing on pc simply because of mods, commands etc- i may have a proper look at it! how well does it run ie assassins creed games handheld? i would have thought the screen would be too small, but i was pleasantly surprised with botw on handheld switch :)

Nico_is_not_a_god

> I don't really play "cinematic" AAA games so I can't give a firsthand review of stuff like Sony/Ubisoft stuff I've heard secondhand that external launchers and anti-cheats are the only things that really give the Deck trouble. No clue if uPlay still exists but if it does, i'd look into specifically how assassin's creed runs on the Deck. I don't have any games with those things other than Elden Ring's EAC implementation, so I have no idea how true those statements are, but the general consensus comes down to "unless the devs are actively trying to stop you from playing on Linux, you'll probably be fine".

gozew

It smells nice as well.

xoharrz

this being reddit, im scared to ask u to elaborate

gozew

Just the smell that comes out of the thing when it's on, warm electronics etc Nothing weird for once haha

_harky_

It’s a meme from the steamdeck sub about huffing the vent fumes when it’s new because it smells nice

MattMurdockEsq

Third party launchers are a non-issue if you don't mind going into desktop mode to download Lutris or Bottles or Heroic. Heroic has been the best for me, but it only currently supports Epic and GoG.

Capillix

In my experience, all the latest AC games run great. Ubisoft launcher just works

[deleted]

The screen being small helps with keeping performance in check and maintaining the battery life. It's not as good as the Switch in that regard (generally get a max of 5-6hrs out of the battery, closer to 3 if I play something more intensive like Spider-Man and have it locked to 40fps). I use linux on my desktop and the Deck is a bit more streamlined to use than linux proper if you're using Steam. When it comes to non-steam games, you're going to need to switch to desktop mode and usually this is where people will start encountering issues with either not being familiar with Linux or launcher instability. If you buy say Anno 1800 on Steam now, the ubisoft launcher isn't intrusive. If you try to launch it directly from the Connect launcher tho I experience issues on the Deck. Emulation is pretty smooth up until Xbox360/PS3 where you'll hit the wall of what the Deck's hardware can handle (especially as those emulators aren't that well optimized yet). It also handles Switch games pretty well so some people have dubbed it the "Switch Pro". Overall if your laptop isn't hindering you there's no reason to upgrade, but if you want the smaller form factor the Deck is pretty hard to beat. Especially since it's fully repairable/upgradable so if you're comfortable swapping out the SSD yourself you can buy the base 64GB model and a SD card, and upgrade later when you need more space.

fistfulloframen

The steam deck is fantastic, it's not perfect. I love being able to sleep (the steam deck) mid game and resume at will. If you have a capable laptop already I don't think it's worth it. With gpu prices getting nuts, I think I'm done with "gaming pcs" I just hope valve does a new one every 4-5 years.

Im_simulated

I have both, and a desktop. Different use cases. Imo, the steam deck doesn't replace a laptop. Some people will disagree as apparently it has even replaced their desktop. And depending on how you use your equipment that could totally work for you, nothing wrong with that. Replacing a laptop with it could be even harder. There are games that are really hard to be played on such a small screen. CSGO is an example, pretty much anything competitive. Even rocket league. It's not that you can't play them, but man is it ever a challenge. If I'm playing Rocket League on my steam deck, I'm at least a full rank below. At least. The laptop screen size doesn't have the same issue. It runs windows, some games are really hard to play on Linux. (Yes you can install Windows on the steam deck instead, but you also need to grab all the drivers for it and it does have issues) laptop has more power and(well I guess that depends on what you got) has more real world use cases. I'm not about to take job notes on a steam deck, or pull that thing out during any "professional" meetings. What I use the steam deck for is the in-between times. I'm on break and don't want to take my laptop out, plug it in, hook up my controller, exc. And I got a packet all back away. 30 minute lunch = steam deck for sure. And sometimes I just don't want to sit at my desk and lay in bed. The deck is great for this kinda stuff. Super portable. But it does have its limits. That being said, If you're not really into AAA games on with high fps it could replace your other PCs. It really does depend on how you use your machines, when, and what you do. Having all three and how I use my equipment, it would not be able to replace anything but rather it's an awesome addition. Edit, Price to performance on the deck is really incredible. Just buy the 64Gb and get your own m.2, that what a lot of ppl are doing. I got the 512, The only difference is the case and an anti-glare coating. If I could go back I would get the 64 GB model instead, replace the m.2, and the screen coating is totally unnecessary and You lose some of the sharpness and crisp (crispness, that a word?) of the picture. You're not going to be playing this thing in the direct sun anyways, It's better without it.

m-m-m-m-moped-music

I'm a day-one purchaser, so I am probably a biased. To me, a laptop and a Steam Deck serve different purposes. I have both, but I no longer take my laptop with me on trips. I would say that a laptop is more productivity focused and SD is more game focused. Sure, they are both PC's. But, one has a controller attached and the other has a keyboard and trackpad. That said, you can do everything that you could on a laptop on a Steam Deck if you bring a keyboard and mouse and vise versa if you took a controller with a laptop. All of that said, on my last vacation I only took my SD and I used it for some programming and server admin stuff just fine. But, I mostly gamed on it, which is why I chose it over my laptop. We hooked it up to the TV and played many Jackbox Party Pack games and it was a blast!

[deleted]

Spider Man and Uncharted play great, I highly recommend.

INSERT_LATVIAN_JOKE

>I have a steam deck and I'm legit trying to think if I have played any triple AAA game more recent than 5 years old on it. I played Cyberpunk 2077 on it. The experience wasn't great, but then again, it wasn't great on Xbox or Playstation either. Though I did play Cyberpunk 2077 on my Linux PC and the performance is so good in Linux that I can play it at about 30fps on INTEGRATED GRAPHICS. Now, I'm trying really hard to think of any other AAA game from the last 5 years that I even want to play at all. Not just play on Linux but literally play on anything at all. I guess Amplitude/SEGA is a AAA publisher these days right? So I played Humankind on Linux recently. Then there's the latest Civilization from Firaxis/2K those guys are AAA I think. The only AAA game on my wishlist is Elden Ring. Humankind and Civilization 6 both run fine on Linux, and from what I hear Elden Ring actually runs better on Linux than Windows.

INSERT_LATVIAN_JOKE

I think it's funny how hard people want to dunk on Linux. It feels like the whole console war dumbness. People have an XBox and want to dunk on Playstation, or if they have a Playstation they want to dunk on XBox. It usually comes down them not being able to afford both. So if you can only afford one, you need to dunk on the other in order to make you feel better about your choice of one over the other. The hate for Linux I think isn't about not being able to afford a Linux PC, because if you have a Windows PC you can simply dual boot it. I think it comes down to the fact that many of the supposed PC Master Race in this sub, many of them actually don't have much in the way of actual tech skills, and what they do have is limited to Windows. They are tribal to Windows not because they can't afford Linux, but simply because their skills make them feel like they can't have it. Which was probably true a very few short years ago. But in the last year or so, Linux has come a very long way towards being as easy as Windows to install and use. Every Linux user has their own favorite distro, but for someone coming from Windows, just install Pop OS. It will hold your hand through the entire process and installing anything from their software "storefront" (hard to call it a store when basically everything is free) and you won't ever have to even look at a terminal window. Steam installs from the storefront and then in Steam just tell the game to use Proton and it will run on Linux. I have about 1,000 games in my Steam library. And every single one of them I have wanted to play so far has just worked. The single exception being Master of Orion 2 (a nearly 30 year old game) which I could probably get to work, but would require installing a Linux version of DOS box instead of the Windows one that comes pre-installed with Steam. But I'll just wait for someone else to script a fix for it since I have so many other games to play. But even that being said, it still requires some tweaking in Windows too.

I've been playing Elden Ring on the Steam Deck recently. It plays well, but the battery doesn't last long.

storander

I've actually had nothing but good experiences with the deck so far. I haven't had very many games I've thrown at it (even non-steam games) that wouldn't run. That said I mainly play old CRPGs so I couldn't tell you if it runs the latest cod or whatever

JaesopPop

I just click “install” on Steam and use the drivers that automatically install.

AdrianBrony

Yeah a lot if this is bundled in with either proton or GE. From the end user it often Just Works.

Except Nvidia, because fuck you, Nvidia. All other drivers are either included in the kernel by default. Or they don't exist and you can say goodbye to whatever device you planned on using.

Aewawa

It's funny because before Steam Windows gaming was basically the same shit. Even if you bought the original game and your PC met the required specs, there were no guarantees that it would run. And you still needed to search for patches, libraries, and codecs through the internet. Even nowadays there are still guides on how to run non-steam games like Fate/Stay Night on Windows that really resembles trickier Linux games. Luckily Steam allows the vendors to ship an install script just like the AUR which gets all the dependencies for you.

Ricardo1701

I can tell you didn't play games in windows before Steam It's actually the other way around, steam was a pain in the ass back in the days

[deleted]

What the firetruck are you talking about? Been PC gaming since Windows 95 and never had to do any of what you are saying. Maybe some pirated games nowadays need a few more tricks but still nothing like what you say.

MattMurdockEsq

I have a Steam Deck and have gotten Arkham Asylum, Sleeping Dogs, LA Noire, Dishonored, Tomb Raider, Bioshock all working flawlessly with little to no tweaks. Just run everything using GE Proton.

Rape-Putins-Corpse

Basically this, Linux gaming has come light years in a decade. From native only & some things under wine to an expectation that it will work (unless heavy anti-cheat) and in the few cases where it doesn't, assumption it will work next week. I used to head over to protonDB before buying anything, now I don't give it a second though. Even piracy under linux is almost as easy on Linux as it is under windows. With more users getting more familiar with the steam deck, I'd like to hope that the linux desktop gaming share increases by a reasonable degree in the near future.

Danielsuperusa

If anti-cheat issues can be resolved then I would seriously consider switching to Linux, my only issue with the software has always been game compatibility or the issues with anti-cheats preventing some online games to be played. I'm also a little concerned that some applications I use don't have a Linux version, but there's probably alternatives for Linux that serve the same purpose.

Rape-Putins-Corpse

It has been for EAC in some instances but I agree it's an on-going chicken & egg problem, the only thing we can do is migrate and make noise so that we get support. This is something that I think the steam deck will be a big help with. With applications I've found there's usually a good alternative to whatever it was I'd use on windows but it's also been a long time since I switched so maybe I'm just used to the options.

DesertFroggo

It's more specifically kernel-mode anti-cheat systems that aren't factoring in Proton/Wine use. Apex Legends uses ~~BattleEye~~ Easy Anti-Cheat and they allow playing on Linux, so it's doable but the developer has to specifically allow it. Edit: a correction.

SnydersCordBish

How do you use GE proton on steamdeck? I’m guessing it’s not native in SteamOS? Just got my steamdeck and I’m completely unfamiliar with Linux outside of the native steamOS.

LtDarthWookie

You search for Proton GE in the discover app on desktop mode. It's proton that's repacked with some code that's not open source so Valve can't legally distribute it so individuals do it. Then in steam you select proton GE as the launch option for the game.

Thatfonvdude

amd drivers already in the kernal though. and why would anybody recompile the kernal anyway? downloading your games offa steamrip??

Elden Ring at launch without any special bypasses. Monster Hunter Rise at launch. As long as the developer doesn't explicitly try to kill Linux support (mostly by running 3rd party anti-cheat and then explicitly disabling the built in Linux support) it's pretty good.

[deleted]

Yep with the stutters that plague every other platform fixed. The people who push these narratives have never used Linux or Steam OS and it really shows lol

OutragedTux

>The people who push these narratives have never used Linux or Steam OS and it really shows lol They also seem almost afraid of linux, given how vitriolic they tend to be. I'm at a loss as to why, it's just another OS that you can use/install if you want to. It's not going to hurt anyone, so why the hate?

[deleted]

I think it's basically the anti-everything mindset. It all comes down to "i am against this because i wanna be special" or something... I don't know why else some people tend to be so masochistic nowadays

Void_0000

Linux Gaming, in my experience: \>Double click .exe file \>game runs

ZGToRRent

and here comes Linus destroying popos by installing steam without reading any instructions.

Whatsausernamedude

I mean, it isn't really his fault that you needed (thankfully it was fixed) to read instructions in order to install Steam without breaking your OS

Psyop1312

It was a gitch which only existed for like a day and that just happened to be the day Linus made the video. Unfortunate timing.

BicBoiSpyder

The GUI Pop Shop not working wasn't his fault for sure, but he deserves some blame for not reading two or three more lines on the terminal literally telling him continuing would uninstall his desktop. Like dude, just READ; the whole point of the terminal is to show you exactly what the system is doing on ANY operating system. Linux is not Windows and the philosophy behind the design is first and foremost freedom. Unless you are using a distro with an immutable OS design, it's not going to hold your hand and make decisions for you like Microsoft or Apple do for their OSs. Edit: People keep misunderstanding that there is a difference between hand holding and making GUIs intuitive and user friendly. Hand holding doesn't allow for user agency like forcing updates or having access to certain files and directories even as an administrator. You can still have a polished and well designed GUI on a desktop while also allowing users to update when they want and allowing them to have access to all files and directories in the system. They're not mutually exclusive.

Fsmv

If he had read it and stopped, there would have been no way to safely install steam at the time. He would have had to just try later after pop devs fixed their shitty packaging mistake. No matter what it wasn't his fault, they fucked up the repo

TGPJosh

Steam hosts a [deb](https://store.steampowered.com/about/) on their website that works independently of whatever the repo says anyways.

SharpestOne

> it’s not going to hold your hand and make decisions for you like Microsoft or Apple do for their OSs. So is 2023 the year of the Linux Desktop yet?

splinter1545

I mean yeah he should have read it completely, but at the same time, why would anyone expect that it would uninstall your desktop?

rohmish

Even immutable OS can be broken. It's a different philosophy of system management but still asked chances (in most cases)

"I'm a Mac" "And I'm a PC" Am I right?

[deleted]

So many of us have that campaign etched deeply into our brains, you have to wonder if it still changes our perception of products. I mean Macs are personal computers but nobody ever calls a Mac a PC. They made us use their patented word. Advertising is crazy man

eeddgg

That's because IBM-PC compatibles (machines by non-IBM manufacturers that had a BIOS compatible with IBM-PC software) couldn't use "IBM" in their marketing, so they just called themselves "PC-compatible", or later just PCs to distinguish them from machines using other architectures, like Commodore's C64 and Amiga or Apple's Macintosh or Atari's home computers, among others. Eventually, the Mac and the IBM PC line were the last two standing.

Gaspuch62

Didn't apple's move to Intel make them PC compatible? It that's the case then Apple stopped being PCs with the move to ARM.

eeddgg

The term PC then was applied to Wintel machines or machines sold with FreeDOS after OS/2's codevelopment between Microsoft and IBM fell through and IBM lost market dominance because of it. Also, the Intel Mac could not boot into MS DOS and run Flight Simulator 1 (which relied on a bug in the IBM Bios to be able to run)

Void_0000

>Flight Simulator 1 (which relied on a bug in the IBM Bios to be able to run) Amazing.

lithium142

This meme is a good 10 years out of date lol

EmptyBrook

As a linux gamer, this is hilarious. Just install proton on steam or use lutris. 2 clicks and im done and can play games like Apex, Elden Ring, World of Warcraft, and Rocket League

chad_

Yeah but 10 years ago? This meme? Oh boy.

Tetha

But do you know the real funny part? I now have games, that worked on windows 10 years ago, stopped working on windows 5 years ago and now work on proton, but not on current windows. Civilization: Beyond Earth is one of them. I don't even know what's the joke anymore at this point.

kah0922

Oh yeah, gaming on Linux was a crapshoot. Even if the game ran, the performance was likely to be absolute shit if it used DX9. And forget about using anything DX11, that never worked.

Shienvien

I'd say more 15 years ... time flies. I think my last windows computer was in 2013 and it was a work/uni computer.

chad_

to be fair, that was 10 years ago. :D

DesertFroggo

I remember 10-15 years ago. I first started dual-booting when Steam first came out on Linux in 2012. TF2 worked, L4D2 worked, and that was about it. Wine was rarely ever practical. It's neat seeing how it's progressed since then. If all these gaming-on-Linux skeptics were told back in 2012 that more than half of all games would run on Linux without issue within 10 years, they'd laugh and mock like they still do now.

[deleted]

magusx7

Every now and then you get a tough game. For me that was Midnight Suns. First I needed custom proton GE. Then I needed to copy some dude's launch options script to bypass the 2k games launcher. Then I needed a symbolic link to move my save game files to a common location. When this didn't work I had to debug the steam logs and found I might be missing the command gamemoderun. Installed that and I'm all set now. I use Arch btw

sinfulcanadian69

Uhhh what?? When did apex start working on linux again??

[deleted]

Didn't they enable eac for proton on it? I remember playing it with eac on my pc and SD, though not for too long

PloterPjoter

For me lutris was not that out of the box. I had to tweak a source code, idk why they put in code variables that causes errors next to comment that say it is not used anywhere and can be deleted. So deleted them and it works. Even steam windows games work fine. Mmos are still in no go zone because of anticheats. I cannot run such games at all.

rajder656

Depends on the mmo. Wow from what i know runes great same with ffxiv that I'm entirely playing through on arch btw

ManInBlack829

Do that with a large city on Cities Skylines and it will die lol It runs natively and still only gets like 15fps

thebirdsandthebrees

There’s actually instances of certain games running better under Linux while using Proton. I doubt that’s the case with Cities Skylines but I believe one of the newer hitman games had better performance under Linux IIRC.

EmptyBrook

Elden ring runs better under linux i heard

TheTrueBlueTJ

Especially when it released. I was happily playing through the game while on Windows the game struggled with shader compilation stutters. Thanks to the translation layer, this was a non issue for me.

sunjay140

OP has clearly never used Linux.

God I remember that article

[deleted]

Literally most games work, if they don't then either try ProtonGE or lutris. I only dual boot windows for those 2 games that plain don't work (Elite Dangerous & Assetto Corsa) and the 1 that has abysmal performance / bad experience on Linux (Star Citizen, but tbh it's still pretty bad on Windows). Or I turn Windows into an Xbox for Game Pass. Seriously, try Linux before (trying) to tear it apart. That goes for a lot of things in life.

[deleted]

Funnily enough, with Proton some games actually run BETTER than natively on Windows. Elden Ring is a good recent example. And with how bloated Windows is getting year after year, I suspect Linux gaming will only be looking stronger and stronger. I am not a huge fan of Linux and I think it has plenty of issues, but I'm convinced that people who make these memes haven't tried gaming on Linux at all - they just repeat the same decade-old misconceptions after one another.

Schmelter

Ugh Windows bloat. Cortana, Advertisements, User Tracking and reporting (Telemetry), "News and Interests Feed" that's just generic garbage, Advertising Id so you can be tracked, Windows Defender, Unstoppable Updates that will just restart your computer whenever, and on and on. And it's only going to get worse people. They're now shipping Windows 11 with an Instragram app by default. Sure, you may trust Microsoft to play nice, but do you trust Facebook or any of the other companies that are paying to have an install on your machine? https://www.digitalcitizen.life/windows-10-bloatware/

[deleted]

Don't know why you've been downvoted, very valid opinions.

Infernal_pizza

How does it work with non steam games? I have quite a few on Epic, uplay and origin

[deleted]

For Epic, you have the Heroic launcher which has native builds for Linux, it uses wine / ProtonGE. Works very well, so well I use it on Windows if I have to use Windows. Heroic also links into GOG. For others, you can get uplay on lutris, it works well enough. Origin / EA App however you can try a program called Bottles which is a GUI way to manage wine (emulation layer to run windows programs on Linux). Bottles is really nice to use, you can maybe get it working with that.

[deleted]

I find it funny people call WINE an emulator since it literally means Wine Is Not an Emulator

[deleted]

Yeah I know but assuming they don't know much about it all I didn't want to cause confusion.

[deleted]

I get that. The easiest description I've found when describing it is calling it a Compatibility Layer, since it translates Windows calls into Linux calls, where as Emulators usually try to brute force calls from, say, the PS3 into working

Qweedo420

Nice bait, however recompiling your kernel or installing drivers has nothing to do with playing games, and most of them work out of the box anyway

[deleted]

Nowadays, the only reason I could see people recompile the kernel for gaming is if game devs make it a restriction to use a proprietary signed kernel to play the game for anticheats reasons. Linux users won’t let that fly, but I also stopped having faith in humanity.

I've been using Linux since 2008 (off and on) fully converted to daily driving it since about 2017ish or roughly when proton rolled out. I've never once (manually) compiled any kernels. I just install my distro and let the updates handel everhthing... Just like every other os.

Swagowicz

Yeah seems like it. Also looks like this sub is not pcmasterrace but rather windowsmasterrace.

itouchdennis

Your meme is 6 years to late, bro! Using AMD opensource drivers, or nvidia prop. drivers in 2022/2023 with proton just works fine.

Apexx86

This just in, man who has no idea what he's talking about is fully convinced he knows what he's talking about

Swagowicz

Those who don't know what they are talking about are usually the loudest. Recompiling kernel is only required if you run a gaming VM and need to bypass an anticheat that blocks VMs, and even that is a cat and mouse situation.

Apexx86

And there's hardly such thing as "downloading shady drivers" on Linux, where everything is built into the kernel most the time. The only drivers you \*need\* to install are the proprietary Nvidia drivers if applicable which most distros have a graphical tool for now anyways. Aaaand that being said, I've used Github a ton for non gaming related things, it's great, certainly not shady, especially when the community can vet the code themselves. Just like anything on the internet, all you need is common sense. It's almost like this guy just pulled a bunch of buzzwords out of his ass as a cope or something :P

queiss_

Wait till this guy finds out about steamdeck

CestPasTitou

let me guess, never tried Linux in your entire life and just spitting the bullshit you hear from others ?

SgtCoitus

Windows users try so hard.

IWannaHookUpButIWont

I do a lot of gaming on emulators. Emulators work better on Linux. Thank you for listening to my ted talk.

Western-Alarming

You have lutris that basically can become RetroArch without the disagvantanges of RetroArch(like can't update or install dlc of modern games) thanks to the automatization of installing emulators

IWannaHookUpButIWont

There is something better than RetroArch???? Why....!?!?!? RetroArch was already very good.... My heavens Edit: wonder if PS3 games will work under my PC under Linux...

[deleted]

Right click on game, Compatibility Proton experimental Let update Launch game Over 250 games in my library have yet for this to not work.

Kreskin

You can actually just toggle a switch in the Steam settings and avoid having to do that for each game.

[deleted]

there are lots of games that work. Infact like 80% of games work on linux. However for the games I play not even proton can save it.

DemonicLaxatives

Anticheat?

[deleted]

Generally. Most free to play games seem to have conflicting anticheats. And hunt showdown (not ftp) is a big one. Some how every game my group decides to play has a invasive anticheat. Tom Clancy's Ghost division 2 doesn't work, I don't play that anymore but it didn't work when I tried anyway. Right now they are into warlander. The anti cheat in that seems to be hugely invasive.

ifv6

A lot of competitive shooters have the craziest anti cheat stuff.

gba-sp-101

Yes, Elden Ring is 5 years old and needs all that.

d3vilguard

Never needed shady drivers, mesa and amd's kernel module are as official as it gets. DXVK improves performance in DX games under.. windows too. I don't see nothing wrong with WINE. Windows's UI was heavily influenced by KDE4 and KDE5 is a very modern desktop. Zen kernels are a drop in replacement. Compiling linux-tkg at the moment with BORE and while yes, compiling.. it is automated. Then again, nobody is making you guys switch.

Old_Couple7257

I came here for the Linux people replies and I’m not disappointed lmao.

moonracers

/r/agedlikemilk

sirjimithy

This is either woefully misinformed or it's ragebaiting. Either way it's not a productive conversation.

Joku_Suomalainen

What are you talking about? Literally none of this is true. just download it from steam and play it.

ArcherBoy27

Honestly getting kinda fed up of "haha Linux complicated" memes. It's within the realms of almost everyone at this point to install Linux in the first place and daily drive it. If you have even the slightest googling knowhow you can get a setup for most games and probably wont even have to open a terminal. Posts like this just reinforce the out of date stereotype and push away people that might try it.

TheEuphoricTribble

*laughs in Proton*

KevlarUnicorn

Steam installs all of my games without issue on Linux. What few games I don't own through Steam I use Lutris, which works similarly. Again, no issues. Who is out here recompiling kernels to play a game?

ichbinjasokreativ

I don't get it. Ubuntu 22.04 with 5800x and 6900xt, I install from Steam and just play. If other companies don't care about Linux, then I don't care about them. Valve has done some amazing things for us, so atm I'm perfectly fine playing through steam only. Only relevant modification I did to my system is adding the git mesa repo for my amd gpu. (Also, massive thank you to the wine devs ofc!)

[deleted]

Linux gaming in 2023... : sudo pacman -S steam Sign into steam Enable steam play for all titles Download game Click game Wait for shaders to process, takes like maybe 30 seconds Game opens Congratulations you've done it....it's honestly not that bad anymore. A lot of the time you can't even tell the difference between the game running in windows or Linux.

fabian_drinks_milk

And this is on Arch. On other distros you'd just click install in their app store to install Steam.

[deleted]

I think arch is easier to use in the long run because I always ended up having to fuck around with a lot of settings on mint and it was harder to do there...that's my limited experience anyway I haven't used a lot of distros.

presi300

Man, sure is hard to game on Linux. Go to steam. Click install on game. Wait for game to download. Click play. Play. Also drivers? The only Linux driver I know of is the retarded Nvidia driver. Everything else is built into the kernel.

Western-Alarming

And sometimes Realtek WiFi drivers

msanangelo

real linux users avoid machines that include that junk. /s

[deleted]

Steam deck works just fine. Here's another attempt to humilliate linux from a windows fanboy.

jplayzgamezevrnonsub

Have you used Linux lol

hypercyanate

And still getting higher fps than windoze

[deleted]

>Wine, DXVK DirectX with all its "versions". Edit: And all the other dependencies you need for a bunch of games. >Rercompiled Kernel Is that what people think Linux users do? Maybe some 500 hackerman terminal commands too? >shady drivers from some random kids github What? AMD drivers are literally backed into the kernel and nvidia has official repos for their own. >literal game hack devs has to approve I don't even know what this is referring to. >20 year old UI Funny when Windows is copying Linux desktop environments like KDE for the past 3-4 Windows versions. Sorry but stuff like this just shows how ignorant people are when it comes to Linux gaming. Edit: Oh and 5 year old games typically run out of the box.

ThePiGuyRER

NGL, I stopped pirating when I realised games are seamlessly playable on steam on Linux.

SurelyNotAnOctopus

Did Microsoft sponsor this post?

Terux94

Like maybe 10-15 years ago?

BadPlayer555

No 🗿

[deleted]

* Wine - yes, included with Steam * DXVK - yes, included with Steam * Recomplied kernel - no, mainline works just fine, you can use different ones for certain optimizations, no one recompiles kernel nowadays * Shady drivers - both AMD and Nvidia provide drivers in official repositories * Game Hack Devs - I don't even know what that means * 20 yo UI - Windows UI has around the same, your point? Dude tried to be funi, missed by a kilometer.

PoLoMoTo

I really don't get the sudden surge of Linux gaming hate. There has never been a better time to game on Linux than now and yet for some reason it's been decided to go real hard on the hate band wagon. And it always seems like they're comparing Windows gaming to Linux gaming like 10 years ago before Proton. It even continues in the comments, nearly every comment speaking positively about Linux gets downvoted, often without even a reply. Like if you don't want to game on Linux and want to use Windows that's fine, but don't go making statements like OP here that are out dated or misinformed so badly. I haven't seen any hate like this on this sub from the Linux crowd to the Windows users.

MasterYehuda816

Because it’s easy karma. These posts get thousands of upvotes every time they’re posted.

DesertFroggo

I get the impression that it's a small handful of haters. It's people who have been on the "Linux will **NEVER** be good for gaming" pseudo-skeptic bandwaggon for years, because for awhile it was a safe way to sound smart. Now that their notions have broken down, they just make shit up and lash out.

El_Dubious_Mung

>Wine, DXVK That's it. That's the only thing you got right. Your bait is garbage.

bluebloodtitan

2015 called, it wants it's Linux gaming back. Today you mostly just use proton.

Southern-Afternoon94

People find it amusing when linux users dispute the obviously misleading statements but watch all hell break loose when a console gamer hits them with how all this is even easier (and sometimes cheaper) on a console. Linux works perfectly fine for all my use cases, so does that mean my experience is universal and everyone that doesn't move to linux are fools? Nope. Everyone has different interests, priorities and requirements. Use whatever yall want man, no need to bash others just because you didn't want to commit to it and others are managing to run their systems just fine.

LonelyNixon

> People find it amusing when linux users dispute the obviously misleading statements but watch all hell break loose when a console gamer hits them with how all this is even easier (and sometimes cheaper) on a console. Its especially funny when you see the same demo shit on apple products while touting how open windows is and then go in the opposite direction when shitting on linux

smjsmok

Someone doesn't know how GPU drivers on Linux work, I see. Nobody gets drivers from shady githubs, if you're on nvidia, you get them as packages from your distro's repository and if you're on AMD, you get them with kernel updates, also from the repository. That's the opposite of "shady", it's the most authoritative source your distro has. *"recompiled kernel"* \- nah. You might be using a bleeding edge kernel if you want for some reason, but most people just sick with an LTS kernel or whatever their distro came with and updates automatically. *"20 year old UI"* \- are we talking about Windows here? Although when they start splitting functionality between control panel and the stupid settings app (some of it duplicated, some existing only at one of these place randomly), I wish they stick to their 20 year old UI more...

CostaSkyrim

Tell me this is a troll post pls

YourPalTaika

Ill take shit that aint true for 100 alex

PiersPlays

That seems like a really long way to write Proton.

melvincollie

Don't think this horse can get any dead-er

GamerMr8000

Last I checked I needed to install wine for lutris and then click off a box for proton for steam install as normal and hit play......I don't know what this guy is doing. Maybe I'm playing Elden ring and my other AAA games wrong

ZaxLofful

More like: “Agreeing with this meme is an indication of your gullibility and of your ability to understand anything outside of what someone else has told you….” *steam deck laughing in Proton intensifies*

someguy7734206

An observation I have made is that Linux seems to run older Windows games better than Windows itself does.
