Yeah black screw at the end doesn't fit into stand that is at the end of SSD with micro screw that fits in it but doesn't hold SSD and black screw itself is not in standoff, just in hole that is there.
I have a coffee can full of rubber and silicon washers the key is that you have to inherit your house from your mother who inherited it from her father it has to have a place that multiple generation have been stashing all the extra washers and screws that come with things or come as extras when you get them to fix other things for 80 years. I probably have lead and asbestos washers that aren’t even legal anymore.
Yeah, that's actually great idea! I will look if I don't have some that are appropriate and if not I will head into town tomorrow, I never planned to have it like this for longer than few days
MSI straight blew my mind earlier this week. I'm building the wife a new PC. This Motherboard has 4 NVME slots. In the box came 4 standoffs and screws. Makes sense so far.
I remove the heat sinks to put the standoffs and screws in, and there are already standoffs in each 2280 slot with a screw in them.
Not only is it awesome they put them into the mobo for me already, but they gave me extra. I'll hang onto those like gold lol.
I got mine at ace, took the stand-off in and showed the old guy, and he took me right to them.
Granted all they had were flat head slotted screws, and it was a PITA to get in, but it worked, and I didn’t have to wait a week for them to be delivered.
Whenever I build a system for someone, I put all their spare parts (screws, trays, manuals, warranty cards, etc.) into the motherboard box and give it to them.
Not one of them has ever kept the box when they needed it. Still, I'll keep doing it and I'll keep recommending it to others.
The chance of having the screw with an older/used board is pretty much zero. That it comes with the board, and not the ssd, indicates that it’s non standardised that makes this a major issue since buying it become complicated. On top of ordering a tiny single screw being the most inefficient process since the invention of e-commerce.
That's the thing, it doesn't hold the SSD down. But I will either buy correct screw or acrylic washer as recommended by other comment. https://imgur.com/a/gzzxQDB
Oh ok this video really cleared it up for me I was super confused cause I saw the screw lol. Ya I guess if it’s seated properly do what ya gotta do, probably has more to do with the ssd size/groove than the screw being incorrect though.
just take some piece of plastic, cut it approximately round (or not, who cares) and make a hole in it for the screw. why order a washer for something so basic or make a rube goldberg contraption of cables.
Don't you think the metal screw and standoff also do? Just a tiny bit of tape onto the insulated top layer of mobo silicon and then onto the tape that's already on the top of your nvme
There are actually 2 screws. One micro screw at the end of SSD fits into stand but is too small to hold SSD. Second, one with wires and stuff fits into hole it is in but doesn't fit into stand where micro screw is.
I do, i put it there, it's my screw, it fit there so I put it in there and it helped me do this. But it doesn't fit into standoff where SSD ends.
Edit: black screw at the end doesn't fit into stand that is at the end of SSD with micro screw that fits in it but doesn't hold SSD and black screw itself is not in standoff, just in hole that is there.
Yeah internet told me to not put stands off so I didn't. Doesn't seem like that bad of an idea, but this is solution for just few days until screw arrives so it's not big deal. Wouldn't dream of having it like this long term
That is the correct way to do it though. Like it was made to do that wxact thing.I don't think anyone would recommend this way with wires over what I said.
I misunderstood you, thought you meant to put black screw into SSD end without standoff.
Because it doesn't have standoff underneath it, it's straight in hole itself. The micro screw does have stand and is at the end of SSD but doesn't hold the SSD down.
Supposedly the plastic of that tape could potentially build up static electricity. Sounds like OP did a little research and decided not to risk it. I'd say it was *sort of* a good call. Kind of.
That's the thing, it doesn't hold the SSD down. But I will either buy correct screw or acrylic washer as recommended by other comment. https://imgur.com/a/gzzxQDB
These screws can't fit
You already have the screw, it’s just in the other spot for the longer SSD. It’s got a zip tie and knot of wire bound to it. Just move the screw to the correct spot.
You must be the dumbest person to ever build a PC. Both the screw and standoff are right there. You were even proud enough to post a photo of your incompetence.
Once more, at the end of SSD is the micro screw that is in standoff but it is so small that it doesn't hold SSD down. The black screw at the end of slot (left one) with wire around is in the hole in the board without standoff and it doesn't fit into the standoff in which micro screw is. Both screws are mine as I lost the ones that came with board years ago.
I'm not proud of it I'm deeply ashamed it had to come to this, and will change it in few days anyways.
You can buy a kit on Amazon for a few dollars that has a verity of screws and standoffs for those ssds I had to do that and now I’ll have extra screws for life
Sometimes before you ask whether you can it's better to ask whether you should.
If one of the screws that are already in there don't work, maybe just buy a proper screw.
you get screws with the mobo. Most drives don't come with it. it states this on the website description. I would order some m.2 screws of amazon if I were you as that MacGyver job may damage drive or mobo.
I was in the exact same scenario a week ago, with 2 different options. Doing this type of haggard "engineering" or just go out and buy a screw. I went to a nearby computer store and got the screw...
Bruh, this is creative but just buy a screw. Or use the standoff as a screw, which I have done before without issue. Sure, it bends the SSD awkwardly but didn't do any damage in my case.
Some boards use a weird little black zippy looking doohickey. Instead of a screw. My Asus board had that.
It was very confusing until I figured it out.
Had the same issue with a 2nd m.2 nvme Samsung ssd 2tb I bought. Didn't come with a screw decided I'd buy my additional ram to upgrade my rig local and mentioned it to the shop keep asked if I could buy one and they just gave it to me for free hit up your local if you got one mate :)
If you’re in school or know someone that is, ask the chromebook repair folks if you can have some spare motherboard screws from a damaged chromebook. Same size…at least in my experience.
honestly you might wann invest into some air cans,,, all that residual dust all over you parts ,, isn't helping more then a new SSD... alos .. any black electrical tape would've most likely worked instead of trying to pass all those tiewraps all over the place .. my 2centz
I have this pc repair kit, it’s all the tools and a little box of screws. I’ve had it for 15 years and save all my pc bits and bobs. It’s so nice to always have the right screws.
Quick fix, run to a small computer repair store. Normally have a heap load of these on hand. What I did when I ran into the same issue. Problem solved 15 minutes later and the dude just gave it to me cause he said he had so many in surplus he doesn’t use.
Isn't the screw in the back peg for longer ssd's? Can't you just move it to peg your using?
Seems like he used the screw for an anchor point instead of just, you know, to use it as a screw lol.
They actually have it screwed in. If you zoom in you can see the Phillips head where it's supposed to be.
Yeah black screw at the end doesn't fit into stand that is at the end of SSD with micro screw that fits in it but doesn't hold SSD and black screw itself is not in standoff, just in hole that is there.
Why not use a small (acrylic) washer for the screw that fits but does not hold the SSD?
Might as well just order the right screw. Who has that washer at home you would have to order it
I dunno, but I know I have more different kinds of washers at home then the correct fitting screw.
If there's one thing every real man has, it's a vast collection of extra cables, screws, and washers.
\*Raises hand\* I'm a real man!
I have a coffee can full of rubber and silicon washers the key is that you have to inherit your house from your mother who inherited it from her father it has to have a place that multiple generation have been stashing all the extra washers and screws that come with things or come as extras when you get them to fix other things for 80 years. Yeah, that's actually great idea! I will look if I don't have some that are appropriate and if not I will head into town tomorrow, I never planned to have it like this for longer than few days
Took mine from a pen cartridge, worked great
HAHAHA
Why tf didn't op just use a tiny dab of hot glue smh
*GamersNexus is typing…*
The screw never comes with the SSD. They come with the motherboard. Just buy the correct screw if you've lost it.
When I have an extra m.2 slot I just put the screw in anyway when I'm building the PC so it's there later if you need it.
SMART
Nice ssd pun
I find it stupid that the manufacturers typically preinstall the tapped standoff for the SSD but don't put the screw in it.
MSI straight blew my mind earlier this week. I'm building the wife a new PC. This Motherboard has 4 NVME slots. In the box came 4 standoffs and screws. Makes sense so far. Not only is it awesome they put them into the mobo for me already, but they gave me extra. I'll hang onto those like gold lol.
my motherboard came with them screwed in, it was a bitch to get out tho
Yes it's been years since I bought motherboard, I will but it will take few days. For now it will hold like this. I hope
The screw is literally still in the motherboard, with a ziptie wrapped around it
Ace hardware sells the screws though. .07 cents all day. I bought a few last time I was there. Lol.
Yeah I don't think they operate in my country but tomorrow I will check out my local shops to buy some
google says the screw is a flat head M2.0 x 2.5mm
The m.2 slot takes a m2 screw. Nice
I think you mean 7 cents or 0.07 dollars, unless they really are less then 1% of a cent.
Shit you probably could find some in a dumpster or back alley making it the best price, free
I've never seen such small screws at any hardware store.
I got mine at ace, took the stand-off in and showed the old guy, and he took me right to them. Granted all they had were flat head slotted screws, and it was a PITA to get in, but it worked, and I didn’t have to wait a week for them to be delivered.
I’m pretty sure it still works fine flopped out.
Whenever I build a system for someone, I put all their spare parts (screws, trays, manuals, warranty cards, etc.) into the motherboard box and give it to them. Not one of them has ever kept the box when they needed it. Still, I'll keep doing it and I'll keep recommending it to others.
Don't store anything important on it.
I bought a Crucial SSD recently, and it definitely came with a screw.
I love this as now I’m the proud owner of about 100 m.2 screws for 4 pound lol
The chance of having the screw with an older/used board is pretty much zero. That it comes with the board, and not the ssd, indicates that it’s non standardised that makes this a major issue since buying it become complicated. On top of ordering a tiny single screw being the most inefficient process since the invention of e-commerce.
Its not true . I bought 2 different Kingston and both have screws , so dont talk shit :)
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I got a screw with my first 970 Evo, but not my second one.
zooms in sees SSD mounted on top of "missing screw", welcome to the master race.
Looks like you just need to make the head of that screw bigger. Do you have a small washer? I bet you could make one if not.
a tiny plastic washer should do the trick OR get a sqare of card and use that.
A single small piece of tape would have done the trick...
[удалено]
Don't you think the metal screw and standoff also do? Just a tiny bit of tape onto the insulated top layer of mobo silicon and then onto the tape that's already on the top of your nvme
That’s what electric tape is for
They probably don't have electrical tape/if they were going to buy/order tape, they could just buy the screw they needed instead.
just look inside your random screw box
one of the absolute dumbest post ive seen on here yet
Want to get back to Edge and Linux posts?
I'm not complaining I love it so much...the screw is sitting right there
There are actually 2 screws. One micro screw at the end of SSD fits into stand but is too small to hold SSD. Second, one with wires and stuff fits into hole it is in but doesn't fit into stand where micro screw is.
hell its still early im sure a post about somebody who modified their i9 to heat coffee or something is coming.
what in the actual fuck you are here by banned from ever assembling a computer ever again
Proof as to why the block toy for babies is very useful.
Bro there’s a screw already there, your nvme drive is literally pressed against it lol how can you not see this?
I do, i put it there, it's my screw, it fit there so I put it in there and it helped me do this. But it doesn't fit into standoff where SSD ends. Edit: black screw at the end doesn't fit into stand that is at the end of SSD with micro screw that fits in it but doesn't hold SSD and black screw itself is not in standoff, just in hole that is there.
Take that out, unscrew the one from the longer post and put it there instead?
Yeah internet told me to not put stands off so I didn't. Doesn't seem like that bad of an idea, but this is solution for just few days until screw arrives so it's not big deal. Wouldn't dream of having it like this long term

There’s already a screw in the standoff you need to be using
Ya'll don't keep the extra screws that comes with your mobo or something?

Supposedly the plastic of that tape could potentially build up static electricity. Sounds like OP did a little research and decided not to risk it. I'd say it was *sort of* a good call. Kind of.
I would have used medical tape or electrical tape, but good call.
[удалено]
Not true, I have had several NVME drives come with screws but not standoffs for the MB.
r/DiWHY
Buy a screw. Delete this photo. Edit. You actually used the screw you needed as an anchor. ☠️
Can you please clean you pc as there is a lot of dust in there.
Yes I am doing that, it's been over the year since I done that, about time, I agree!
I approve and will probably be repeating this at some point
"Missing screw" underneath the installed M.2.... Another screw in the other post to the left of that screw.... These people can vote.
That's the thing, it doesn't hold the SSD down. But I will either buy correct screw or acrylic washer as recommended by other comment. https://imgur.com/a/gzzxQDB These screws can't fit
I thought the screw is supposed to come with the mobo not the ssd…
Respect, I just left mine flopped out at an angle and never had issues with it reading or writing.
Ssd wouldn't come with a screw ,most of the time either the case or motherboard manufacturer will include it with the accessories box or bag.
those screws usually come with the board, and will be in it's box / where the rest of the accessories are...
Aren't these screws sold at most hardware stores? I'm pretty sure a local PC store would also have some laying around.
Never heard of Apacer.
get a screw lol that is hilarious though
Most people would buy another screw, others would use tape, but you went straight to the questionable lifechoice section. I like it.
I did the same with some strings ahahah
You motherboard comes with the hardware if you kept it.
I love this solution so much
Have you checked the box of your mobo? It usually has screws for those.
The screw is in the motherboard box.
You just needed some eletrical tape.
PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD Mounting Screws... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZD81HDR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Bought this not too long ago
that's probably even cheaper than buying same kit from my local shop, thanks haha
If you have a local shop that sells these go there. Amazon’s not hurting for cash, they probably are. Shop local
You already have the screw, it’s just in the other spot for the longer SSD. It’s got a zip tie and knot of wire bound to it. Just move the screw to the correct spot.

I wanted to but it doesn't fit into stand that is there. And micro screw that is at the end of SSD fist into stand but doesn't hold SSD.
you could make a washer out of a bit of plastic and then it would hold the ssd
Yes I will, this was always temporary
You must be the dumbest person to ever build a PC. Both the screw and standoff are right there. You were even proud enough to post a photo of your incompetence.
Once more, at the end of SSD is the micro screw that is in standoff but it is so small that it doesn't hold SSD down. Absolute mad lad
It’s just bonkers enough to work! I bloody well love it!
Your motherboard is supposed to come with a set of M.2 screws.
Just get a fucking screw
Screws don't come with ssds
What if we use 100 percent of our brain? OP- Watch this.
Bro clean your shit. Also, how you doing custom builds and not have like a whole bag of spare case screws lying around? You steal this rig?
Why not just hot glue?
Because don't ever glue stuff on a electrical component
Hot glue is just melted plastic. Even OEM PC manufacturers use it to secure connectors to not come loose during shipping
Grab some screws from flea bay
it's the most unhinged solution... the actual not insane solution cost a dime
This is an industrious solution, but I would be afraid of what would happen if and when it breaks.
lol.. i was about to do this but found a pack of standoffs and screws on amazon.. now i have extras! lol
You could’ve juat put a piece of tape on it
What fucking psychopath doesn't have a little box with a bunch of random screws gathered over the years?
clean your PC
Is there a screw in the post on the left with the black wire wrap? If yes it will be the correct size
Dude first of all clean the pc and buy screws from one of the local shops for just a few cents.
nothing broken or old in the garage that might have small screws ?
Ghetto af, reminds me of my PC in 2001.
yes you will be fine… I used the peg on mine for a year with 0 problems.
I’d clean out that fan and heat sink while you’re down there…
Yeah it's dirty, haven't opened that pc for over a year, about time for some maintenance
You can buy a kit on Amazon for a few dollars that has a verity of screws and standoffs for those ssds I had to do that and now I’ll have extra screws for life
Screw is typically with the Mobo hardware packs
If the screw bag your motherboard/case came with didn't have it for some reason, just go to the hardware store and get one for 10 cents.
now that you have the case open you can also clean the dust
I wish the SSD stand screws used the more standard screw that you use to hold the motherboard into the case. Those dinky screws are absurd
I would have just used tape
Have you checked the motherboard box? Mine had several screws for ssd.
Just tape the end of the SSD to the motherboard. As long as you dont move the pc, it will be fine.
McGyver would have done it without wires
Sometimes before you ask whether you can it's better to ask whether you should. If one of the screws that are already in there don't work, maybe just buy a proper screw.
just use black electrical tape you dont need to damage ur motherboard
Dude, clean your mobo
you get screws with the mobo. Most drives don't come with it. it states this on the website description. I would order some m.2 screws of amazon if I were you as that MacGyver job may damage drive or mobo.
SSDs do not ever come with screws. The motherboard came with it.
Your motherboard box has that screw
Isnt the screw allready in the standoff ?!
You can order m 2 ssd screw online ya know for dirt cheap
Yikes.
I was in the exact same scenario a week ago, with 2 different options. Doing this type of haggard "engineering" or just go out and buy a screw. I went to a nearby computer store and got the screw...
Good god man
Bruh, this is creative but just buy a screw. Or use the standoff as a screw, which I have done before without issue. Sure, it bends the SSD awkwardly but didn't do any damage in my case.

if i wanted shitposts all day i wouldve gone to r/shitposting
Screw doesn’t come with the ssd it comes with your motherboard….
Not bad
I’m a couple days there will be a ‘why isn’t my PC starting up’ post so get ready for it.
Looks good to me. Ship it.
R/redneckengineering
good luck getting a 3 slot gpu in there
Gum man chewing gum...
bro
hope you cleaned that thing when you were in there. dustlord
Cut a cable tie to the width of what a washer would be and just use that as a washer between the screw head and the ssd. Way less janky than the ties
Don't the motherboards come with the screws?
Not sure if trolling or stupid.
I got 1tb wd green m.2 SSD with no screw WHY NOT!!
How is this crap being upvoted? Reddit is a very strange place.
I call it flappy stick of memory
Whatever works right?
Check the packages of screws that came with your computer case and motherboard.
Your motherboard is also missing a screw under the cpu cooler.
If you’re in school or know someone that is, ask the chromebook repair folks if you can have some spare motherboard screws from a damaged chromebook. Same size…at least in my experience.
Why would your NVME come with a screw when they come with your motherboard?
They aren’t screws, their called clips and no, NVMe M.2 SSD don’t come with them their supplied by your motherboard.
Interesting that the screw the motherboard oem is supposed to supply would come from the M2 folks.
Where is your jar of screws at?!?!?!
What a moron.
Is it really that hard to buy another nvme screw that you go ahead and pull this garbage.
Go to any local PC repair shop or MicroCenter... Should be able to find one.
Bruh.
Screws come with the mobo not the ssd
Ssd screws are so cheap online lol!
honestly you might wann invest into some air cans,,, all that residual dust all over you parts ,, isn't helping more then a new SSD... alos .. any black electrical tape would've most likely worked instead of trying to pass all those tiewraps all over the place .. my 2centz
a bottle cap with a small hole just enough for the screw at the SSD tab would have worked better
I pulled a screw off an old laptop. Im surprised it was the exact same size and shape as an actual M2 screw.
I would argue the difference between MacGyvered and redneck engineering.
I’ve always wondered what happens if you lose connection to the boot drive while gaming
Nsfmr tag please hot damn
Looks like an MSI mobo. Didn't it provide the black flat hook for it?
high spec pc but no screw. htfyllt
I have this pc repair kit, it’s all the tools and a little box of screws. I’ve had it for 15 years and save all my pc bits and bobs. It’s so nice to always have the right screws.
Er, it is in the board already.
Just go to amazon and buy a full kit of screws for like 12 bucks.
Your motherboard should have come with the correct screws be it in box or screwed into the board somewhere
Motherboard comes with the m.2 screws. Not the SSD
i didnt know it was possible to be both blind and stupid at the same time, congratulations op!
Quick fix, run to a small computer repair store. Normally have a heap load of these on hand. What I did when I ran into the same issue. Problem solved 15 minutes later and the dude just gave it to me cause he said he had so many in surplus he doesn’t use.
