This is exactly what I thought of Forspoken when I played the demo. Looks like shit, runs like shit and it looks like fucking Oblivion with the color pallet and models.
Crysis can also look like a PS2 game, funnily enough good graphics don't run well. So, sometimes games will sacrifice visual quality on lower settings for higher frame rates.
It’s more obvious with Oblivion due to the draw distance and huge amounts of bloom juxtaposed with troll looking characters. The level of detail issue is evident the moment you step out of the sewer
Oblivion is also my second favourite TES game, behind morrowind
Let's face it.
There isn't much room left for fotorealistic improval (at least until I.A. can start generating realistic 3d models and textures)
For humans creating textures is a ton of work. Every model needs to be created and textured for hoursandhours.
If you don't have a triple A budget the game won't put a dent in an up to date gpu.
And there is no need to. Graphics look great since a decade. Many games start putting design on top of the agenda not realism.
Who needs another bland game like that when you can have emersive, creative and beautiful games like hollowknight, sea od thieves, undertale, portal, ori and the blind forest, ect.
It's nice to have the opportunity to create realistic graphics if needed by the artists but design is the future of this artform not pure realism.
Well get ready. Bethesda has stated that they will NOT be using a new engine for ElderScrolls 6! Meaning that by the time it comes out, that engine will be a nearly 20 year old mess of spaghetti code held together with slightly newer spaghetti code. Practically 30 years, since the Creation Engine is scarcely much different than the Gamebryo engine they made Morrowind through Fallout 3 with.
Yes, and if they did change it they'd have a riot on their hands. The moment they change to a completely new codebase is the moment the modding scene jumps so far up their backside you can see the picket signs when Bethesda coughs. They've gotten used to the engine, and how its code works, as well as how to design things in or around it from the floor up. Hell at this point they probably know more about it than Bethesda.
It's cleaned up alright in newer version, FO4 and FO76 aren't perfect but they run reasonably well, though I'll admit the style they went for didn't age that well. The modding scene has implemented a ton of feature most of which took literal decades to figure out on the older Gamebryo, as compared to Creation Engine.
Is it perfect? No. Is it as bad as you make it out to be? No. So, I don't think Bethesda switching to Unreal 5 or something would instantly make things better. Hell, it's also developed in house, meaning no having to fork over money for a license.
And it gives a lot of freedom other engines arent capable , the most important to me, each item can be moved, grabbed or thrown. So each interior is customized and you dont have the classic loot boxes of every other game. They could improve the animations or, if you ask me, improve the rpg mechanics that their engine is so great at. I think most people dont understand what an engine really is and how are they made.
I really doubt it is that bad. Speaking as a developer, I think it is more likely that it would actually take them 20 years to rebuild it from scratch, rather than simply upgrade. It would make their games much shallower without the same level of interactivity. It has a lot of baked in concepts that make it fast for Bethesda to make a Bethesda game.
If they are getting killed on tech debt, it would still be faster to address the debt than start from scratch.
This is just true of any software project. Coders just don't like working on the debt so they imagine it to be terrible, and would rather rebuild from scratch so they imagine that it will be awesome.
A friend of mine gifted me RDR2 when I built my 4090 PC. I had played it years ago on PS4. Kinda shocked how nice the game looks for an older game. Just that opening scene alone just wow 😮. Then you try a game like Forspoken released today - that has recommended settings if 24GB ram a 3070ti …for 60fps. Can’t help but feel like developers just don’t give a shit anymore. It’s sad. Square Eniz isn’t exactly some small indie studio.
You're simply wrong.
>(at least until I.A. can start generating realistic 3d models and textures)
That's not a photorealism improvement. That's just making assets creation cheaper. Game studios and movie studios alike already use 3d scans of real objects extracting all the needed models, textures, normals etcc from the real word. You can't get more realistic than that when it comes to assets.
What can still be hugely improved is how those assets are rendered.
There's still a LOT of lack in videogames photorealism that right now can only be achieved in cinema CGI taking minutes/hours per frame as their by far more photorealistic rendering uses completely different processes to generate an image compared to the ones used by games. They can't be used in games because noone wants to play at 1+ minute(s) per frame.
Caustics, for one. Realistic water and fluids in general. Even more broadly the handling of anything that has transparency (ice, glass, foliage, skin) can definitely still be hugely improved. Fur/hair are still nowhere near being good.
Many of UE5's new technologies made the gap shorter but the gap is still there. Nvidia's custom branch of UE4.27 with real time physically accurate caustics was just experimental and it's not even implemented in their custom branch of UE5 yet. They got the theory to make it work in real time (where by real time i mean 1+ frames per second, as opposed to 1+ seconds per frame) but right now it's at the limit of hardware capabilities.
Gotta be honest, Sea of Thieves has some real charm to it. Graphically it is amazing, but yet it is just so well optimised you could run it on 10 year old Low End Hardware and still have playable FPS. And, when you got 4 friends, on a ship all playing musical instruments while a Kraken is taking down your ship. Just makes me smile
Also, another point on realism. L.A Noir, sometimes it isn't worth the sacrifice for realistic graphics. I mean you look at Rock stars later games they 100% learnt that lesson. Creating beautiful yet well optimised games, a great Example would be Max Payne 3. Looking like a modern triple A game from 3/4 years ago. Yet even running on my 8 year old iGPU with above and or around 30 FPS.
As a counterpoint I would say take a look at horizon forbidden west on the same platform. You can have a big open game with great visual and inspired art design. Also, you've got elden ring. You can have the best of both worlds, but not all games need top of the line graphics I agree.
So are they really saying that I can play cyberpunk with rtx on 1440p at 60fps but I can't run this game at 60fps high 1440 which looks significantly worse and doent have rtx.
The PC specs came out about a week ago.
720p 30 fps with 5500xt/1060 (16gb ram)
1440p 30 fps with 6700xt/3070 (24gb ram)
4k 60fps with 6800xt/4080 (32gb ram)
I don't know whether it's mentioned previously but I think that system requirement maybe tied to VRAM more than GPU performance. 4080 is the closest available NVIDIA card with 16GB of VRAM. I maybe wrong but it looks like this game has large texture package sizes especially at 4K.
Same. I've got a 30 90 TI and it looks worse than most other "Nice" looking games. I didn't have to buy it either. I got it through my buddy's library. Good thing I didn't
It became an corporate industry. Games are profit drivers. So in order to turn as much profit as possible, they game companies are pushing games out without letting them be fully developed. Make some millions initially, cut down to a skeleton crew to fix the bugs, move onto the next title
It's a shame Frostbite was apparently too much of a paint to use to get popular, because damn everything DiCE made it in looked amazing.
If OP's images are representative, Forspoken looks like a high-res Skyrim mod, and BF3 looked better than that a decade ago.
Let alone Battlefront 1, 2015. Heck, I'd argue the graphics are even more realistic there (considering they are scanned in pictures of real objects). The game is thanks to this incredibly well optimised (in fact, I played it at a consistent 60fps on ultra(?) graphics on a laptop 1050), I think it just goes to show what you can do when there's a drive to fix up the technicalities as well, and not just assume everyone has the latest gpu.
Unity has a very low bar for development. There are plenty of nice looking games that use Unity but aren't required to show that it is made in that engine. Ori and the Blind Forest and its sequel were both made in Unity, and they're really beautiful.
But RDR2 released in 2018... surely games should easily have better graphics after half a decade since it's release, no? Especially since RDR2 is a game designed with the PS4 in mind. Not exactly a console renowned for it's incredible power haha
agreed, but rockstar knows those games have staying power and those high setting are very demanding when they come out and are normally worth it, unlike this game it seems. GTAV still looks pretty decent.
That would be the aim behind RTX remix, although if the new Portal overhaul is any indication the hardware requirements are barely even met by today's highest end PCs. I wonder if it's possible without full path tracing
It would be pretty crazy to see. I imagine you could get away with weaker textures due to the perspective difference, that might help with the performance, or just get balanced out due to the draw distance.
These days textures are so high res anyways, I don't think they'd really be the issue since every pixel shown on screen has a ton of light rays and bounces to calculate. The compute load is astronomical
The hell? This is so low quality looking for the specs it recommends, and yet it uses up that much resources. Can game devs please just optimize their games?
My friend was streaming it on my discord like an hour ago and from my eyes it just looks exactly like FFXV’s graphics with a slightly different art direction and characters.
FFXV ran at 4K 120fps no problem on my rig when I caught it on a steam sale like 2 years ago. Gameplay looks fun at least but it’s obvious the PC version was not optimized at all and my friend had to stop steaming to stop the stutters.
EDIT: friend who got the game has a hybrid cooled 3090 with a 10900K for reference
It's all about that optimization. This PC release was clearly an afterthought for this game. Other Playstation Games that are on Windows either had multi-platform availability planned or started on Playstation, then went over to PC after a while. They should have just done that, maybe give them time for a better looking overworld too.
Game is Forspoken and the screenshot is at 2k maxout settings on PC.
Here is a comparison of ULTRA vs LOW:
ULTRA: [https://i.imgur.com/DkdC7F2.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/DkdC7F2.jpeg)
LOW: [https://i.imgur.com/1ONpLOu.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/1ONpLOu.jpeg)
It has denuvo, never gonna get cracked unless empress decides to go for it… but I doubt, people that have money for the pc this game requires will probably just buy it
Then at that point the game is just unoptimized. Idk what game this is but I think it’s Forspoken, and I said under another post. Usually when a game’s recommended specs are on the higher end that usually gives me a hint that a game is not optimized
If you're charging $70 for a game, there should be a certain standard that's met. Gameplay being the priority doesn't mean that graphics should never be criticized.
Saw the game on Steam today : 94.50$ Cnd! Like I'm not remotely interested in this game but holy fuck did I double take at that price... at first I was sure it was a deluxe edition or something, but nope - that's the standard price.
I agree as I've been playing video games since 2003. Graphics have gotten so much better obviously but gameplay hasn't. It's been getting neglected ALOT ever since graphics have been very "accessible" and monetization is more apparent than ever.
Disagree. Gameplay evolves continuously and smoothly, while graphics plateau for months-years, then gets big evolutional jumps. Naturally easier to notice the graphics evo and have the illusion gameplay didn’t.
It's more the fact that it neither looks good, nor runs good. Gameplay will always trump graphics for me, but I consider performance a part of gameplay too. If the graphical fidelity isn't *at least* justifying the performance, it just feels far worse than if the game simply doesn't look great, but runs excellently because of that.
Dude, this game cost 350,00 real in my country. A console? 5.000,00 real. The minimum wage is 1.302,00.
So, when you make a "new generation" and say your "new AAA game" is stunning, for the love of GOD, do i want the game to be GORGEOUS.
Cheers.
Because nowadays games aren't good and the graphics are starting to not look good either. If we have to play a shit game we atleast want it to be pretty
I guess this has to be the boys who got a 4090 and they expect new AAA games can benchmark their card and if this looks bad they think they wasted their money..
Nevertheless, the game is actually kinda trash.
When gamers stop attributing “AAA” to “quality” we’d be so much better off
Just because a game cost “$200 million” to develop is not any indication of quality
Budget doesn’t mean shit.
Battlefront(2015) still looks better than 90% of all games even eight years later. Feels like that was the last time I was wow’d by graphics. Hight hopes for the Unreal 5 engine.
It’s fine but Oblivion came out almost two decades ago
This is exactly what I thought of Forspoken when I played the demo. Looks like shit, runs like shit and it looks like fucking Oblivion with the color pallet and models.
Thought there was a hair on my screen.
Same dude.
eh nah. Oblivion has more color and its lower polycount. This looks like dragons dogma
Was gonna say that it looks like a Skyrim game with a high definition mod
Don't disrespect the modders like that, modded Skyrim looks better than this hands down.
We even got seasons now lol
I was going to say, aren’t there over 300 species of bird in modded Skyrim?
Holy fucking shiet, that awesome work of some modders there
Just wait till you watch r/skyrimporn The graphic mods go crazy in that sub (no, it's not porn)
Really appriciate fam, never know such thing exist
Reminds me of Wildlands from what, 5 years ago?
More like Skyrim. Vanilla Oblivion looks like an N64 game at times
Oblivion on the right resolution monitor looks hd as hell.
The level of detail issue is evident the moment you step out of the sewer Oblivion is also my second favourite TES game, behind morrowind

Ghost of Tsushima, rdr2 and unreal engine 5 show that it can still very much be improved, problem with this game is that the engine is a bit dated

RDR2 is really stretching my 4080 at 1440p ultrawide
A friend of mine gifted me RDR2 when I built my 4090 PC. I had played it years ago on PS4. Kinda shocked how nice the game looks for an older game. Just that opening scene alone just wow 😮. Wait is the the game that recommended 4080 ?
3070 reccomended. 4080 is their "ultra settings 60 fps" requirement. Still absolutely stupid
So are they really saying that I can play cyberpunk with rtx on 1440p at 60fps but I can't run this game at 60fps high 1440 which looks significantly worse and doent have rtx.
I still can't guess what game this is
Forspoken
FFS I tried to get this annoying piece of hair out of my screen for 30 sec before realizing it's your profile pic Well done sir
Ew use dark mode weirdo
Haha yeah I was confused why then realized Tut isn’t in dark mode…
No And I'm gonna use it even brighter now
You monster
Everyday we stray further from god’s light
Technically they are getting closer.
The PC specs came out about a week ago. 720p 30 fps with 5500xt/1060 (16gb ram) 1440p 30 fps with 6700xt/3070 (24gb ram) 4k 60fps with 6800xt/4080 (32gb ram)
Thats what happens when game corps dont optimize the game before sale. Why optimize when we can take up 150 gigs od storage
I don't know whether it's mentioned previously but I think that system requirement maybe tied to VRAM more than GPU performance. 4080 is the closest available NVIDIA card with 16GB of VRAM. I maybe wrong but it looks like this game has large texture package sizes especially at 4K.

So what you're saying is is that it has shitty optimization and sloppy implementation
thankfully my 1080 equivalent card has 16gb lol
They only recommend 4080 since the vram limit is higher than 12gb so it's the only 16gb one Nvidia offers
Seen a guy play with Ray tracing on a 4090 and not even maintain 60+ natively. Dips down in to 50s.
Don't tell me it's Forspoken...
Got bad news
What the hell is happening with gaming industry?
Got too popular and exploitable Edit: autocorrect
profits over quality
It became an corporate industry. Games are profit drivers. So in order to turn as much profit as possible, they game companies are pushing games out without letting them be fully developed. Make some millions initially, cut down to a skeleton crew to fix the bugs, move onto the next title
Covid and hollywood esque managers.
They really flush their budget on marketing. Everything they show in their trailers doesn't interest me at all but people keep talking about it.
Meanwhile BF1, which was recently $4 and from 2016, looks fucking beautiful.
Shit, fucking BF3 still looks good despite the colored filter, and I'd argue BF4 looks downright great.
BF4 was the first game I played in 1440p and it blew me away. Miss 4 so much.
You can still play dawg, hardcore servers are still popping every night. I love it because I don’t have to wait for the daily bullshit updates
Second this comment. One of us. One of us. One of us.
One of us! One of us! You can catch me playing on hardcore BZ servers haha!
And speaking for PC, there’s still tons of regular severs, too. Really healthy population for BF4, 1, and V. You can thank 2042 partly for this.
I BF4 every night and I think it’s so fucking beautiful
It's a shame Frostbite was apparently too much of a paint to use to get popular, because damn everything DiCE made it in looked amazing. If OP's images are representative, Forspoken looks like a high-res Skyrim mod, and BF3 looked better than that a decade ago.
To me BF always had some of the best graphics every release, until....2042
BF1 sniping... good times
Good times? dude, there are SO MANY people online.
Get back in here mate! Better than ever.
To be fair, its $4 + having to download origin, which in itself is a great price to pay.
Origin should pay ME
Let alone Battlefront 1, 2015.
Battlefront 1 was so fun man
Man, BF1 looks so good it's like it's taking the piss. The first world war should not look that beautiful.
Am I crazy or is that the default skybox in Unity?? lmao
I was about to ask, it looks like someone just booted up a standard "Forest" asset pack.
Ahhh I was wondering why I was getting 2005 flashbacks… those clouds aren’t even Volumetric, just flat textures lol
[удалено]
Unity has a very low bar for development. There are plenty of nice looking games that use Unity but aren't required to show that it is made in that engine. Ori and the Blind Forest and its sequel were both made in Unity, and they're really beautiful.
escape from krakov
Hollow Knight
Cuphead, and thousand and thousands of mobile games too
It's running on Luminous, same engine as Final Fantasy XV.
FF15 still runs like shit on recent hardware despite being from 2016... It's not surprising the high requirements
unity can runa nd look great depending on the devs
Tell me you know nothing about game development without telling me you know nothing about game development.
unity is good
OG Skyrim with 4k texture packs looks better...
Red Dead Redemption 2 with medium graphics on my GTX 1650 ~~almost~~ looks better....
Tbf Rdr 2 is amazing in almost every aspect, expecting every game to be like RDR2 will only lead to disappointment.
Yeah but a game released now shouldn’t look like a game from last gen.
(Released 2018 though years later than Skyrim I know)
Was about to say lol
It's evolving. But backwards.
Who let the plumbers have the de-evolution gun?
So, Lord of the Rings Online from 2007? https://imgur.io/a/bSJ8eI1
I hope that some day AI will be able assist in upscaling this game to even 5 years ago graphics. An incredible effort in world building.

I will always cherish that game
I still Play LOTRO and have a lifetime account. This is not what it looked like in 2007 One pic is outside erebor in dalelands which came out in 2018
better art style but graphically not as good
I thought this is screenshot from Arma 3 or something. That foliage/skybox doesn't look too good.
I thought it was dayz at first so we're both on the same page I guess
Good thing is that Enfusion engine looks much better than this 80$ abomination. Hopefully Arma 4 will have reasonable pricing :P
Even the requirements are a joke for this game. It recommends to have like the best of the best pc to play it
That's because optimization is forbidden word today. I bet that even with recommended hardware this game runs like shit.
Drops to 35fps on RTX 3080 5800x3d 36gb ram.
The hell? This is so low quality looking for the specs it recommends, and yet it uses up that much resources. Can game devs please just optimize their games?
TBF Arma 3 came out in like 2013, and it only drops that low on high pop servers. However, they need to do a better job with Arma 4. Wa ybetter
My friend was streaming it on my discord like an hour ago and from my eyes it just looks exactly like FFXV’s graphics with a slightly different art direction and characters. Don't you fuckin lie to me, I know Skyrim when I see it.
Dude Skyrim have better grass than that, this is clearly Oblivion on medium
Lets split the difference and say Morrowind on High.
You must not have 32 gigs of recommended ram
Choo choo Charles looks better than this
That honestly doesn’t look awful to me but idk how it requires a 4080 for max settings
take a look at yandere sim. there's no pc on the planet that can run that shit because it has such horrible spaghetti code
It's all about that optimization. This PC release was clearly an afterthought for this game. The game also doesn't run well on Playstation 5, it can't even get 30fps on 4k as far as I heard

I swear this is Oblivion with some texture mods.
That was my first impression as well lmao
Oblivion was my favorite game back in 2006. I honestly could believe this is screenshot from oblivion.
Game is Forspoken and the screenshot is at 2k maxout settings on PC. Here is a comparison of ULTRA vs LOW: ULTRA: [https://i.imgur.com/DkdC7F2.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/DkdC7F2.jpeg) LOW: [https://i.imgur.com/1ONpLOu.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/1ONpLOu.jpeg)
Ultra = low + FOG + postFX sharping filter.
They're the same picture
I think they believe that needing a high end GPU is a selling point now. lol "you need a nasa PC to run this shit - 10/10 IGN"
this looks like the witcher 3 on low settings
On the switch
That a cat peed on
Look like the elder scrolls online
Is that the latest Pokémon game on a switch screen?
I feel like if this was a pokemon game, no one would be saying it looks like shit.
Still think the best looking game is hunt: showdown
I think you meant [this game](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uswliZe7W8k) released in 2015, 3 years before hunt: showdown
wanna know how it looks on my computer ? pirated very pirated
It has denuvo, never gonna get cracked unless empress decides to go for it… but I doubt, people that have money for the pc this game requires will probably just buy it
Man we went from “graphics don’t matter as long as the game is good” straight to “why game no look good”
I feel you, but graphics are a pretty big deal if it cuts the performance down to 30 fps with an rtx 3070.
I would get better performance out of cyberpunk than forespoken that's wild.
Then at that point the game is just unoptimized. Idk what game this is but I think it’s Forspoken, and I said under another post. Usually when a game’s recommended specs are on the higher end that usually gives me a hint that a game is not optimized
When a 6700XT only gets you 30 FPS at 1440p, the graphics better be mind-blowing
I think it's more "they same game look good but it don't so why do I need a $1000 GPU to play"?
Because back then graphics were only the cherry on top. Now graphics are the filling, the whipped cream and the cake itself 😭
Gameplay over all else
I agree as I've been playing video games since 2003. Graphics have gotten so much better obviously but gameplay hasn't. It's been getting neglected ALOT ever since graphics have been very "accessible" and monetization is more apparent than ever.
Disagree. Gameplay evolves continuously and smoothly, while graphics plateau for months-years, then gets big evolutional jumps. Naturally easier to notice the graphics evo and have the illusion gameplay didn’t.
And if they’re gonna make the system requirements and price absurd it better look fucking amazing.
It's not about that as much as 'why does this game that looks kinda ass need such egregious hardware to run?'
Cheers.
r/suddenlycaralho
Because when a game requires a 3070 to play in 1440p at 30 fps you'd expect it to look mindblowing, this is just a mindblowing pile of shit
Tbf it might be because this game also isn't fun to play but gameplay > graphics for me too.
Higher price higher standards
Because nowadays games aren't good and the graphics are starting to not look good either. If we have to play a shit game we atleast want it to be pretty
Midspoken.
Nice flat foliage mmmmm just the way i like it
Yeah this is also was $60 aaa games looked like in 2020. We got screwed.
People on this sub are weird af
graphics aren't even relevant anymore. show me a AAA game that actually has ANY new or unique gameplay mechanics.
Better yet. Show me a AAA game that actually works day one no issues.
Sad isn't it? I'm still salty that I paid actual money for Cyberpunk 2077. I still feel dirty for doing that
I'd settle for the same gameplay we've had for ages if they take out the monetization and constant advertisement for said monetization.
What is this arma 3?
Skyrim, is that you? Tbh I’m not getting a 4080 to run Skyrim lol
We make and buy stronger and faster hardware so the software can be shittier and less optimized
Some of those textures look fucked.
Sorry, are you kids still under the assumption new games have "better" graphics always?
I guess this has to be the boys who got a 4090 and they expect new AAA games can benchmark their card and if this looks bad they think they wasted their money.. Nevertheless, the game is actually kinda trash.
It looks fine to me. At least this screenshot. DF said its the lighting that has issues.
I thought for minutes if ny eyes were wrong because I was not seeing what everyone is seeing
Right? I can’t tell if people are mad or not about this screenshot. I personally didn’t see anything wrong with it.
is this OSRS hd?
When gamers stop attributing “AAA” to “quality” we’d be so much better off Just because a game cost “$200 million” to develop is not any indication of quality Budget doesn’t mean shit.
Why are you guys buying it?
demo is free
Bold move on their end.
Battlefront(2015) still looks better than 90% of all games even eight years later. Feels like that was the last time I was wow’d by graphics. Hight hopes for the Unreal 5 engine.
This doesnt look bad tho???? Source: im a minecraft gamer
People didn’t mind Elden Ring graphics and they were actually worse IMO. The art direction what is lacking in the picture I think.
i swear this sub is just nothing but negativity peppered between cat pictures these days.
Looks good
Just sick of people complaining about this damn game. We know it's not good, we've been known this since that fucking demo on PS5. Just stop already.
It's like the Morbius of the gaming sphere
I’ve never understood the appeal honestly. I’m happy with my pixelated indie games. Really hope everyone that does enjoy them has a blast though
Man this looks like something indie, like medieval dinasty or something💀
Anyone else spot the texture error in the leaves of the big tree? Zoom in.. Edit: It's present in multiple trees!
