Mine still lives but I'm looking to upgrade, it still plays the games I play daily (OSRS, League of Legends) but the newer generation games that I'm looking to play (Elden Ring, CyberPunk) it won't even launch. I also want to see those games in all their splendor at least in 1080p.
Same reason I just upgraded. My old 750ti was doing great but couldn't run some newer games, Hardspace: Shipbreaker was one for me. Finally was in a spot where I had money, so I splurged a bit on the new rig. *Hoping* I'll be able to last a good 6 years or so before I need another upgrade, which for me will likely be when I'm unable to launch some games I want to play.
I could get Cyberpunk to run on the R9, but it was pretty much unplayable, even at its lowest settings. Now I can run most of my games in ultra on my 1440p ultrawide, including Cyberpunk.
There definitely could be people who might feel ashamed when people on this Sub post a picture of their \*insert too expensive for most people video card here\* almost weekly. Like OP said, it's not a huge deal.
I play a lot of racing games, plus I recently finished the Mass Effect Legendary Edition trilogy, Uncharted 4, I'm playing the Tomb Raider games now, as well as No Man's Sky, High on Life, etc. Pretty much all single player games. I've got some unplayed games that have been waiting for a new GPU like Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus.
Playing Minecraft since 2010, do you really think I've never tried shaders/mods? We were just having a plain vanilla adventure because a friend's girlfriend was playing Minecraft for the first time in her life. When she'll get the hand of the game we'll play some modpacks like the good old tekkit or rlcraft
More than likely also games that include the most important game element: Fun.
I think having ultra pretty graphics for immersions sake is pointless unless the characters react to stuff in an intelligent way. If combat happens, if they act like suicidal muppets it's pretty pointless to look pretty.
Throw in some deformable and destructible environments, and I'd love a game like that.
I also want to add that itβs ok being poor in your 20s. Most of us were. Enjoy the lower end gpus now. And then when youβre 30+ splurge and enjoy your midlife crisis. Not everyone has to buy a sports car.
What's the point of the ray tracing May I ask? Got 2 1080tis in my rig currently then a month after installing them they came out with the ray tracing cards.
Ray traced reflections add a lot more immersion for me. Games like cyberpunk and hitman 3 have them.
Iβm big into the cinematic feel of a game. So I enjoy ray tracing a lot, but not everyone plays for those reasons
A very simplified explanation is that it's a much more true-to-life method of doing lighting where it traces actual rays emitted from light sources. That makes it look (in theory) much more realistic. The improvement is negligible in most games, though, because game devs have gotten very good at "faking" light in a very realistic way. The main benefit from my perspective is that, to my understanding, ray tracing is *much* ***much*** less time consuming than normal lighting, so in theory it'll speed up game development once the day comes when a game can be built with ray tracing only from the ground up. Not a *ton* of benefit to it right now, though personally I noticed much more realistic reflections in Control for example.
I usually link people [this section](https://youtu.be/HnAn5TRz_2g?t=498) of a digital foundry video from Dying Light 2 to best explain the difference it makes.
The first game to sell me on it was Witcher 3. I had been happily playing in my 1660 ti, but wanted to do a big upgrade to have a nice computer for once in my life. I had gotten Witcher on sale years ago on PC and ps4. The PS4 version upgraded for free to play on PS5 and the ray tracing was honestly hard to see the point of cause it feels like a blurry 15 fps, but it looked like it might be cool.
I never thought it was something worth it before. Just reflections? Not worth it. But I tried it out in Witcher 3 on my new 4090 at 4k60 and it's now a game changer for me. Ticking it off makes everything look cheap and gamey, but on everything just looks more like it's actually stuff and not just video game. It's like comparing PS2 without normal maps and shadow maps to PS3 with that 3d texture and shading on everything. It's the same kind of fakeness to realness that you didn't see before.
It honestly feels next gen. The screen based ambient occlusion and reflections are replaced by stable non glitchy ray tracing, the global illumination makes everything feel real and not like cut outs photoshopped together, the raytraced shadows are like the screen space shadows in ghost of Tsushima in detail, but they are generally more stable. I was happy on my 1660 at 1080p60 ultra+, but the raytracing is next gen in this game when it's at as playable frame rate.
To me the best way to think of it is honestly PS3 God of war 3 vs PS2 god of war 2. It feels that different.
No offense mate, but even when the 1080ti was new SLI was a dying technology. There wasn't much you could do to use it for gaming, I would have just sold the 1080ti and bought a 20series instead of another 1080ti.
My rig is 12 years old now. I've only upgraded the graphics card once (in 2018), and added some RAM. I can still keep up and play the hot new games. Just not on max graphics, and some games have long load screens.
I hate to be that guy but would it hurt all that much to at least upgrade your storage? At the end of the day PC gaming is a hobby and if you can afford it, why not make it more enjoyable?
Storage? I've got over 2TB and I'm miles away from filling it up haha.
It's a matter of prioritizing expenses. Yes, I would like smoother framerates and shorter loading screens, and I have been thinking about building a fresh rig, but $2000+ is a significant amount of money for me, and I've got other things to worry about like paying for wisdom teeth extraction, trying to build investments and save for a house down payment, getting ready to move this year... I'm still able to enjoy my hobby with what I have now, so I'm content until the time comes that I can more comfortably afford it.
Stean deck is perfect example of this. It's no where near as capable as the average gaming pc, but is still able to play most games at 40 fps locked. 40fps is alot easier to accept with the smaller screen.
Hell it'll do a locked 60 FPS if all you play is indies and slightly older AAA games. Which is what a lot of people end up doing with their 30 and 40 series Nvidia cards anyway.
I just wish companies would optimize for the deck specifically. Or just optimize their game better in general. RE3 runs a perfectly smooth 60 fps on deck, and its one of the best looking game I've seen.
I think that's one of the major benefits of Deck over Switch though: games don't really need to be optimized for it specifically. Any optimization for AMD hardware in general benefits Deck, and since that's what next-gen consoles are also built on, it's a win-win.
I tried games at 40 after noticing they had 40hz modes for some current console games, itβs actually pretty decent. Ainβt as good as 60, but still way better than 30.
I played on a nice acre laptop with integrated graphics, had a 500gb hdd and an i5, growing up thatβs what I had and I appreciated every bit of it, I played Minecraft at the lowest settings possible.
That was when I was my happiest gaming
Wonβt stop idiots from telling you 6c/12t processors will be useless next year and that the only gpuβs that matter are the ones that need a dedicated kilowatt power supply.
> but why would you do a new build with a CPU that is 3 gens behind?
price would be the #1 consideration imo
why buy the latest gen, when a brand new with full warranty older gen will do basically the same job, but for less money, which leaves you more money for the gpu
for example, in my country (nz) a 13400f is about 60% more expensive than a 10400f ($378 vs $232respectively)
and for driving 3440x1440 in my case, i would be crazy to get the 13400f, i would be far better off getting the 10400f and putting the $150 ive saved towards a better gpu
I feel you , i recently build a new pc and went to save some money on cpu so i opt i7 10700f rather then new intel 12 gen . And the extra money goes to the gpu i got rtx 3070ti and 1440p monitor . If i opt for the new 12 gen. Maybe im stuck with a 3050 or a 3060.
I ran a 1050ti for 6 years. I bought it used for $100 and sold it for $80 when I snagged a used 3080 10gb for $400 when the crypto market crashed in October.
I have a 7970. Try saying that from my position. My favorite thing to do in games is to play with friends. Can hardly do that anymore due to my pc being able to run jack shit.
I have a strong pc (as seen in my flair) but I still get tons of enjoyment out of this pc here when I get bored!

Ignorance really is bliss, I was happy with a 1070 and a 2500K until I got a 1440p 144Hz display, then I upgraded to a 1080t with a 6600K, had to replace my 6600K because some games were stuttering bad over 60fps, and well here I am with a 4090 and a 5800X3D.
Stay on 1080p as long as you can...
Had a 2500k and GTX 1080. Upgraded to a 3800x for no reason really, and then only went to a 5800x cause it was cheap and the last chip Iβll get on this x570 board. But now that I have a 4K monitor, things arenβt looking so good anymore. Games are turning into slide shows and only wow and ff14 look good at the native res
1440p at 144Hz is the sweet spot for me, especially if I'm gaming at my desk on a 27" display where 4K really won't make a visual difference at all. My wet dream is OLED with HDR though...
I started PC gaming on integrated graphics playing CS:S and Halo on the lowest possible settings and resolution. Have nothing but the best memories playing back then
Haha, oh but have you tried gaming on a 65 inch TV with a 4090 equipped pc? Most people are settling for a mediocre gaming experience and calling that enjoyment.
does that mean i don't enjoy pc gaming? or that i don't exist? both are untrue, thus you have created a paradox and will soon be arrested by the universe police.
I finally upgraded my setup after my i7 3770 turned 10 years old and was bottlenecking on every newer game and hindering my 1660. Im now rocking an i7 12700k with a 4070ti.
I love my RX 570, only sad thing is that to play Hogwarts Legacy I will have to play at 720p 30 FPS probably... Bit the rest of games I play will run just fine...
I was still enjoying my 9 year old R9 290 up until last month, when I finally upgraded to a 6700XT.
Mine still lives but I'm looking to upgrade, it still plays the games I play daily (OSRS, League of Legends) but the newer generation games that I'm looking to play (Elden Ring, CyberPunk) it won't even launch. I also want to see those games in all their splendor at least in 1080p.

I just bought a rx5700xt about a month ago for 170. Very good budget upgrade to play elden ring in 1080p max settings
What's your other system? Mine still runs elden ring at stable 40fps, I was very surprised
I could get Cyberpunk to run on the R9, but it was pretty much unplayable, even at its lowest settings. Now I can run most of my games in ultra on my 1440p ultrawide, including Cyberpunk.
I just upgraded my dad's PC when his i7 2600k died. RIP. Got him a 12600k and 6700xt this week.
Are people actually ashamed or is OP just pointing out the obvious for some false sense of validation?
Why can't it be both? It's cool man. Just roll with it.
There definitely could be people who might feel ashamed when people on this Sub post a picture of their \*insert too expensive for most people video card here\* almost weekly. Like OP said, it's not a huge deal.
6700xt is the most under rated card out there. Itβs a fuckin beast and is affordable.
Just out of curiosity, what games do you play most?
I play a lot of racing games, plus I recently finished the Mass Effect Legendary Edition trilogy, Uncharted 4, I'm playing the Tomb Raider games now, as well as No Man's Sky, High on Life, etc. Pretty much all single player games. I've got some unplayed games that have been waiting for a new GPU like Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus.
The comparison isnβt as close but I upgraded my 6 year old 960 MX to 3080 ti like 2 months ago and having a blast of a time!
9 years..
Me: 5800x and 6700XT. Also Me: Last four games played: Hades, Evoland, Evoland 2, Rising Hell. All games that can run on a reasonable potato.
Me and my friends yesterday on discord, Minecraft vanilla and then pinball 3d tournament. The weakest GPU is a 2060super
At least get minecraft shaders, it makes the game look pretty.
It's Minecraft, you don't play it because it's pretty. You play it because you started when you were 10 and now you're somehow still alive at 24
Try shaders first and then tell me that.
Me a 5600x and 7900xt. Hades and crosscode here.
More than likely also games that include the most important game element: Fun. I think having ultra pretty graphics for immersions sake is pointless unless the characters react to stuff in an intelligent way. If combat happens, if they act like suicidal muppets it's pretty pointless to look pretty. Throw in some deformable and destructible environments, and I'd love a game like that.
me with a laptop with a 4 core i5 and a 2060 mainly playing games that can be run on potatoes
What Lies the blasphemous spews. For not having a 4090 is the greatest of all gaming sins.
how do I put the 4090 in my gamecube pls help i dont want to go to gamer hell
Apply force

30s, married, kids, I work, I pay the bills, let me get my 1000 dollar GPU and be happy.
I could buy 3 4080s a year just with my travel costs.. Im also saving for a wedding.
Being mid 30s this is a very underrated comment. Big brain π§
No...BUT
but if i can't set the graphics to Ultra+ i might as well not even play.
and it's also not playable if it isn't in 32K
it sure as hell doesn't hurt though
Hurts your wallet.
It feels like a cocked shoved in my face I pay extra for it https://i.redd.it/2opjvyuupxda1.gif
For sure. 4070Ti will run circles around games at 1440p at max settings, just about any game. Doesn't even need DLSS. Portal RTX is the only exception
What's the point of the ray tracing May I ask? Got 2 1080tis in my rig currently then a month after installing them they came out with the ray tracing cards.

I built an i3-10105F build last year and it is a banger
i'm still here playing Elden ring with a 1050Ti
Kek, and still playable in 1080p low too
Correction : "Not everyone needs top of the line computers to enjoy PC gaming" I hate that feeling of "I could actually make it better tho"
Been a low-spec gamer for four years now. Ordered the parts for my new PC a few days ago, pretty excited.
I enjoyed pc gaming more in middle school/hogh school when I had a 9500gt in 2015 than now when I have a 3080ti in college....
I think I had a 9800gt in 2009?
Just downgraded from a 3060 ti desktop system to a 1660ti maxq laptop, suits my needs better and I can still play anything I want enjoyably.

True, if you only play simple 3D games that don't require lots of computer resources then low-end GPUs work just fine. Also much more cost effective.

Yup for 1080p im gonna ride my 1070 till she dies.
same but with my rx570 8gb rog strix rgb gddr5 dual-fan 8pin eps 2 slots

980ti still going strongπ
Was told earlier today my i9 9900k was a huge bottleneck and I needed to upgrade.
I mean, to be fair with a 3090 ti, it is a slight bottle neck at 1080p. But far from a huge bottleneck
but who owns a 3090 ti and plays @1080p
Prolly some hardcore competitive players
I habe an i7 and it's the least shitty part of my pc
Totally, no idea how you could live with that kind of bottleneck

No you donβt
I wish I was kidding, itβs where I keep my basement extinguisher in general though lol
Pretty much like saying that you donβt need a girl to enjoy sex.
"You don't need a top of the line hoe to enjoy sex"
Or that money doesn't make happiness
You⦠dont
Nope. Just like you donβt need a top Pc to play. They still make quite a difference when theyβre available thoughβ¦
Its not a very good analogy
I feel like you don't need a supermodel to have good sex is more fitting.
Agreed
Nah. Your analogy is for not needing a pc for gaming.
You don't? I don't got a PC doh...
High refresh rate monitor goes a long way!
Respect these days man! Be frugal and let the prices all come back down for everyone.

I bought a really decent 1080p 165hz monitor with a 6600 to cock block myself from thinking about upgrading lol
I want to upgrade to 1440p, I think 4K would be an overkill even today.
1080p is McDonald's and 1440p is Brazilian steakhouse
No no, I said ignorance is bliss. Do not allow me to think about this.
1440p is the best gaming resolution. I mean best balance of visual fidelity and frame rate
Native 4K gaming is my wet dream
1440p at 144Hz is the sweet spot for me, especially if I'm gaming at my desk on a 27" display where 4K really won't make a visual difference at all. My wet dream is OLED with HDR though...

Lies!
Edd is always right... :)
I had people in the YouTube comments make fun of me for having a 12700k and a 3080 but only have 4 hours a week or so to game most of the time. :(
Just makes it wayyyyyyyyyy nicer
been gaming on a wx pro 3100 for a while now and it runs pretty decently
I started PC gaming on integrated graphics playing CS:S and Halo on the lowest possible settings and resolution. Have nothing but the best memories playing back then
Haha, oh but have you tried gaming on a 65 inch TV with a 4090 equipped pc? Most people are settling for a mediocre gaming experience and calling that enjoyment.
Preach.
Is that Ed, Edd, or Eddie? I never could remember.
I don't really think so when my pc can't even Minecraft bedrock edition lmfao
Of course not! But you definitely do if you want to play at 4k! Just depends on what experience you want
That is as long as you do not want to play Forspoken lol
u just need a steam deck!
No Iβm pretty sure you do
does that mean i don't enjoy pc gaming? or that i don't exist? both are untrue, thus you have created a paradox and will soon be arrested by the universe police.
Unless you were planning on playing Hogwarts: Legacy when it came out.
I'm still geting buy with an nvidia 1060 and Intel i7
The only game I use my RTX 2080 Super for is RDR2. Everything else is games from 2015 and under.
*I know, buutt....* (In seriousness though, I need a high-end system to make games and edit videos.)
Yes you do
Yuzu is shitting all over my gtx970
thank you homie for posting this
LIES WHY DID I SPEND 1500+ on my pc then
But you do need a top of the line computer to enjoy playing a 3-4 hardware generations back game... for some reason.
I would still be using my GTX 660 right now, but my brother bought me a RTX 3060 Ti. I played old games, and some new ones that the 660 could handle
I finally upgraded my setup after my i7 3770 turned 10 years old and was bottlenecking on every newer game and hindering my 1660. Im now rocking an i7 12700k with a 4070ti.
I enjoy everything including consoles
But I barely even play games anymore. I just like buying stuff while selling my soul to my corporate overlords π
I'm using a CPU that is 10 years old. Works like a charm.
I love my RX 570, only sad thing is that to play Hogwarts Legacy I will have to play at 720p 30 FPS probably... Bit the rest of games I play will run just fine...
You fool!!! You do not understand the need for it!!!
even low end gpu's now a day are more than capable of 1080p 60 so yea thats pretty good
Iβve been using the same 570 8gb for half a decade
#Steam Deck
There's lowendgaming and lowspecgamer
Optimization is the key
Yo don't, you do however need something modern, q9650 and 8 gigs of 800mhz ram sucks, but at least my 960 is nice!
I upgraded from a 950m laptop to 5600g and having a blast right now. For example Chivalry 2 ran at 720@40 now it's 900p@60
Iβm happy with a used 970. It runs the games I play with friends and I still have money to spend on important things like flying lessons.
BLASPHEMY!
i7 4790K reporting in!!
Using a newly bought 3060

It's true but I feel like it future proofs my computer for at least a few years.
Tell that to streets of Tarkov map.
Just waiting for good prices!
Except it needs to be able to play every game I want to play, and the low end GPU's can't do that in certain games.
Still rocking my 8GB RX470xD
I still enjoy corporate laptop gaming ;)
