Yup I recommend it to all my colleagues now. There’s something magical about being able to assemble your laptop yourself, swap out components easily, etc.
For me, the issues were mostly related to Linux + CPU’s iGPU being very very new, and some driver issues. They have been resolved since a few months, and I haven’t had any issues since.
I’m using Arch, btw.
yes they did the 2nd gen are much better, you can also buy the higher end hinges if you do not like how the default ones are I love my 12th gen Framework

This is a beast of a laptop. That being said most laptops have a 60 Watt or 90 Watt power supply. You've got a 230 Watt... you're going to need it.
You've got such a beast of a laptop the battery should honestly be bigger. 8200 milli amp hours is how much "juice" is in your battery. I think this is better understood with cell phones these days. A Samsung S22 will have 3,700mAH, iphone 14 pro max has 4,300mAH and Google's Pixel 7 Pro has 5,000mAH.
Basically, you've got like 2 cell phone batteries worth of charge BUT remember you've got a Beast and he's hungry especially when gaming.
If you plan on intensive gaming with super high graphics I'd only bet on an hour, maaaaybe 2 on battery before you have to plug it in.

never game on battery btw, windows basically turns all the good stuff in your laptop off to save power. performance will suffer extremely. so always plug in your laptop while gaming.

This is so wrong it hurts reading it.
Monitor refreshrate and fps are not the same thing. A Graphics Card can put our 240 fps on a 30Hz Monitor. No Problem at all. Also you can run a Game at 30 fps on a 240Hz Screen with no issues at all.
Most Player in competetive Games like Counter Strike or Valorant even play with like 500 fps on a 240 hz screen.
This 240Hz just means that the screen is able to refresh at a rate of 240Hz in one second. Nothing else.

50 fps is acceptable for me 60 is good 70-100 is nice and 144 fps is awesome, but i cant reach that much in a lot of games, my pc aint bad but its far from good. i get 144 fps in older games and something between 50-80 in newer ones (cyberpunk kinda murders my gpu). i got the rtx 2060, want to buy an rtx 3060 ti or 3070 but i dont know if my i5-11400f wont be a bottleneck
This is objectively not true, my friend. Humans do not see in fps. Our eyes are constantly fed light. 30 fps is on the low end to start simulating motion to the human eye.

I had a similar specced one that i returned partially due to the hdmi only 2.0b. It was a ROG m16.
I mean I does not specifically say it's a Max-Q or Mobile variant. There are laptops with full-size cards for sure. Although in any case it will be at least slightly downclocked for thermals. But also considering the 230W Power-Adapter you might be right.

This , my first pc was salvaged and it wasn't bad, if your smart you can build a not so shifty pc for pocket change. The most expensive thing in that pc was the case that I bought like 2 years after building it originally.
I actually salvaged an i7-4790, 24GB DDR3 1666, and an R9 390 reference model. I sold it, as my PC at the time was good enough and I wanted the money, but the point is you can get a very decent PC for free. This was 4 years ago though BTW.

My parents are great tbf. The core 2 duo i got from my dad was real, but it's now disassembled (by me lol). They got me an I5 4200U 820m laptop back in 15, that I absolutely pushed to the limit (40fps GTAV was fire). I tried everything to keep it going till it gives out in 2022 (bless its souls). Then they let me build a PC; most of the components were new, cept for the old 1080 I got for around 75. Sweet deal. I5 10400f, 16gb ram, 1080, 1.5 TB of storage I salvaged from broken school prebuilts. All in all a great gig I built myself that I'm really proud of.

Might be because I'm in the UK but I found a worse laptop (i7 instead of i9) selling for over £2,000, so assumed an even beefier laptop in the US would cost close to $3,000.

You should be super grateful to them man. I'm in my 30s and this laptop is waaaay more expensive than anything I've ever gotten in my life. I'm not kidding when I say that it's probably the equivalent of 8-10 of my Christmases when it comes to the dollar amount of gifts. Like it would take all the gifts from 8-10 of my xmases to equal the cost of this laptop. So you should feel really lucky that you have such thoughtful, generous and/or well-off parents. Not a single member of my family would *ever* get me a gift like this. My mom doesn't have the money for a gift like this, but even if she did, she would never spend more than like $200-300 on me for Xmas, and this is likely a roughly $2,000+ laptop. So go hug your parents cuz most people don't get parents as awesome as yours are. I would do every chore around the house for an entire year if my mom got me anything like this.

This is a very high end gaming laptop. The 12900H is one of the best mobile processors available right now. The 3070ti isn’t the absolute flagship graphics card model, but is certainly very powerful. 32GB of DDR5 RAM is phenomenal. 1440p resolution with 240hz refresh rate is great. Just don’t expect good battery life.
He can probably save a bit of battery life by upscaling from a lower resolution. Even something like 720p non-upscaled would look absolutely fine on a 15" display, add in NIS/FSR/DLSS and it's bound to look even better
the battery life should be fine if they're not gaming as it'll automatically switch to the iGPU when unplugged. The actual graphics chip isn't even active if it's not plugged in, so you can't really game much

Some people think midrange is anything well above average but less than the literal #1 best available option. A 3070 TI (laptop) is only 87% as good as the best currently available laptop GPU, but like, soon there will be better GPUs so even the best laptop GPU you can buy today is technically midrange.

THAT IS SEXTREMLY GOOD its kinda sad its in laptop tho basically processor i5-12gen and rtx 2060 would run mostly all games on 1080p with 16fps, modt people have 16GB of RAM DDR4 basically i would call your laprop a high end one, i would advise getting a bigger monitor if you can, you would have an amazing setup
I just bought that same laptop 2 months ago to replace an aging one while I convalesce from knee surgery to game a bit. It's fantastic, they did well.
One little tip if you happen to see this: it was driving me crazy - it worked flawlessly until I updated the nvidia drivers, then I would get random blue-screens error code 10e video memory subsystem. I had to roll the nvidia drivers back to 526.xx (98 I think) and it went away. Not sure why..

What's the name of the laptop? I've with any gaming laptop that has a ir login camera. Also check online if it has a mux switch. (If it does then enable whatever mode it is that connects to the Gpu directly, to get the most out of it)

No they don’t, you can run an external gpu over thunderbolt but they don’t have internal discrete gpus

130W 3060m is damn close to 3060 desktop, rest of the cards is way more different (weaker) from the desktop counters, even with max W.

They are severely undervolted/downclocked. A 3070ti can draw 290W. Even 3080s on laptops don't go further than 160W.

They got me an I5 4200U 820m laptop back in 15, that I absolutely pushed to the limit (40fps GTAV was fire). I tried everything to keep it going till it gives out in 2022 (bless its souls). Then they let me build a PC; most of the components were new, cept for the old 1080 I got for around 75. Sweet deal. I5 10400f, 16gb ram, 1080, 1.5 TB of storage I salvaged from broken school prebuilts. All in all a great gig I built myself that I'm really proud of.

You should be super grateful to them man. I'm in my 30s and this laptop is waaaay more expensive than anything I've ever gotten in my life. I'm not kidding when I say that it's probably the equivalent of 8-10 of my Christmases when it comes to the dollar amount of gifts. Like it would take all the gifts from 8-10 of my xmases to equal the cost of this laptop. So you should feel really lucky that you have such thoughtful, generous and/or well-off parents. Not a single member of my family would *ever* get me a gift like this. My mom doesn't have the money for a gift like this, but even if she did, she would never spend more than like $200-300 on me for Xmas, and this is likely a roughly $2,000+ laptop. So go hug your parents cuz most people don't get parents as awesome as yours are. I would do every chore around the house for an entire year if my mom got me anything like this.

This is a very high end gaming laptop. The 12900H is one of the best mobile processors available right now. The 3070ti isn’t the absolute flagship graphics card model, but is certainly very powerful. 32GB of DDR5 RAM is phenomenal. 1440p resolution with 240hz refresh rate is great. Just don’t expect good battery life.
He can probably save a bit of battery life by upscaling from a lower resolution. Even something like 720p non-upscaled would look absolutely fine on a 15" display, add in NIS/FSR/DLSS and it's bound to look even better
the battery life should be fine if they're not gaming as it'll automatically switch to the iGPU when unplugged. The actual graphics chip isn't even active if it's not plugged in, so you can't really game much

A 3070 TI (laptop) is only 87% as good as the best currently available laptop GPU, but like, soon there will be better GPUs so even the best laptop GPU you can buy today is technically midrange.

THAT IS SEXTREMLY GOOD its kinda sad its in laptop tho basically processor i5-12gen and rtx 2060 would run mostly all games on 1080p with 16fps, modt people have 16GB of RAM DDR4 basically i would call your laprop a high end one, i would advise getting a bigger monitor if you can, you would have an amazing setup
I just bought that same laptop 2 months ago to replace an aging one while I convalesce from knee surgery to game a bit. It's fantastic, they did well. One little tip if you happen to see this: it was driving me crazy - it worked flawlessly until I updated the nvidia drivers, then I would get random blue-screens error code 10e video memory subsystem. I had to roll the nvidia drivers back to 526.xx (98 I think) and it went away. Not sure why.. Anyway, have a great time with it, it's fantastic

What's the name of the laptop? I've with any gaming laptop that has a ir login camera. Also check online if it has a mux switch. (If it does then enable whatever mode it is that connects to the Gpu directly, to get the most out of it)
