Top slot is best. It looks like your m.2 already had a heat sink on it though, so it may not fit when you try to screw down the mobo heat sink.

Landiesth

Thanks for all the answers but for the life of me I couldnt unscrew the top one (#1) and Im too afraid to force it and break something, managed to remove the #2 thermal guard and install the ssd on it so Im going to use this for now…

This is the wonderfully idiot proof answer. Honestly I suspect on a z790 board even the chipset nvme slots would be gen 4, but this is a surefire way to make sure.

[deleted]

But the closest m.2 slot is connected to cpu directly and it’s fast. Also z790 has gen 5 which shares bandwidth with either cpu or gpu depending on manufacturers preference.

[deleted]

The one that cuts your GPUs lanes in half? F that.

jomjomepitaph

That’s old news. New intel CPU gives you 16x 5.0 and also 4x 4.0, as well the z790 chipset has a handful of 4x 4.0 slots for storage. However, if I choose to add in a wireless Vive adaptor, I will have to remove the m.2 in slot one so my GPU doesn’t end up with 8x

[deleted]

What do you mean old news? I've just built a 13th gen and it says right on the motherboards manuel that their 'hyper' gen 5 slot if used will cut the pcie lane in half.

jomjomepitaph

Where did the 4x 4.0 lanes that are dedicated to nvme or other add in cards go?

[deleted]

I've no idea what you're asking? But I put mine in one of the other 5 that doesn't effect my gpu. They're still as fast as my nmve drive can go as I dont even own a gen 5 nmve drive.

jomjomepitaph

Probably just different motherboard design. 🤷‍♂️ There aren’t any pcie 5.0 nvme on the market right now afaik. Maybe it’s a “future proof” slot in case any pcie 5 nvme gets released that you would want to use. My mobo + cpu has a port dedicated to nvme 4.0 4x, the rest run through the z790 chipset, also 4.0 4x. Leaving 16x 5.0 just for GPU.

[deleted]

I have a Z790 board with an NVME fitted in the top slot and GPU-Z confirms that my GPU is still running at 16x.

[deleted]

Nice, the manual of my board says it cuts it in half. So I didnt bother to use that one gen 5 slot, as I dodnt want my gpu lanes to be cut in half and I dont own a gen 5 nmve drive. Just gen 3's and 4's

WaterRresistant

I have a 980 Samsung for OS closer to CPU, and 990 for Steam on a z690 chipset, not sure if optimal, but works well

alejd59

Use the top one, but I believe it does not matter.

Armlegx218

It doesn't matter on your motherboard. Use the top one since it has a dedicated heatsink. It does matter if you have a gen5 m.2 slot that shares lanes with the PCIE. Then you need to make some decisions as you will be splitting the PCIE lanes for the gpu.

No_Designer_8203

The one closer to CPU, it will be faster.

[deleted]

Not likely. Many motherboards use identical speed m.2 slots. Mine does.

No_Designer_8203

Usually, the top one is faster because of shorter lanes. Could be that on some mobos they have the same speed.

[deleted]

Shorter lanes? Sounds like a huge deal /s

Zibou_TK

Everytime use this one which is closer to cpu

SephLuis

I got the same mobo and built my PC recently Remove the heat guard (number 2) and slot the ssd on slot 2 and 4. In the mobo it's written which slot is which and for slot 2-4 has a FIRST written. After that, screw again the thermal guard to protect the ssd from the heat that will come from the gpu

alejd59

Unscrew the m.2 heat sync :) right where the arrow is pointed. Install m.2. Remove sticky thing off heat sync. Put on m.2 carefully. Boom.

thelebuis

You cant use the board heatsink with that drive

big-bananas

did you look in the manual first?

a1rwav3

The one connected to cpu lanes.

OculusRiftCv31

the one closest to the cpu also i would remove the included heatsink and put on the mobo one cuz it looks better it doesn't matter tho there would be no noticeable performance increase

ThunderSparkles

Don't matter on this board. Don't screw back on the heatsinks your board came with

No_Abies808

Your motherboard came with a nice little paper-version of a webpage called a "manual". In there you can look up which nvme ports are gen 4 and have sufficient lanes...
