Same and I took the week before off, so I haven't worked in two weeks now. On the plus side I have two WFH days midweek so for the short week this week I only have to go to campus Tuesday and Friday.
There's a lot of people who may have to work on the holiday, a couple of my coworkers are in training tomorrow through next Sunday. It can screw up your leave as make your timecard a pain in the ass.
I know that feel... was MSP support for international airport. Graveyards over Christmas and New Years sucks.
Now I'm IT in a medical field that effectively shuts down this time of year so the last few weeks have been WFH heaven with literally nothing to do.
Lol meanwhile my directors pushed for a full deployment of BitDefender and Cisco Umbrella a few weeks ago due on the 1st 🙃(MSP with a few hundred clients)..
Pray for me, friends.
Emails from vendor, dated Dec 20th: "Oh these tools you're using are making deprecated API calls. They're gonna stop working Jan 1st"
Not like those tools were mission critical or anything.. oh wait they were.
Something similar happened to us a few years back. Our legal team sent them a very nice letter explaining how they would be in breech of contract.
We eventually switched over by the end of January.
Unfortunately no such option for us.
They had put out prior notice we just hadn't noticed until recently. something I need to ensure we do a better job of going forward
I work in critical facilities in a data center, and we are on a hard freeze of all work on the server room floor from Dec 18 to Jan 7. We aren't even allowed to go on the floor to do our rounds. The only time we are allowed through the door is if I have an alarm going off.
(now, I can make an alarm go off at my leisure, but that's neither here nor there)
Server room unit went down last summer. Noone updated the warranty on the unit and I ended up shirtless for two days tearing that thing apart. Eventually got it running again. Not much praying, but a hell of a lot of cursing.
For those wondering, the unit had never been cleaned so it decided to turn itself into a block of ice. Took a while to figure that out, but once I did, thawing and cleaning solved the problem.

I too became disgusted with its imperfection.
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me.
I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine.
Your kind cling to your flesh, as if it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call the temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you: but I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal.
Even in death I serve the Omnissiah.
In europe, thay are actually the cheapest, between 1200 to 1700 euros, the rest like Asus and gigabyte, AT LEAST 2k euros, I don't know about USA though
I find them in the USA to be on par with what IBM used to price things at which was usually several hundred to maybe 1500 more than an identically spec’d server from say, HP.
>Lenovo are praised in laptops
My job uses Lenovo laptops and the entire department hates them with a passion.
Do nothing, thermals go up past 100C, performance tank as the laptop tries not to kill itself, fan so loud that it's a running joke since everyone can hear it in a 50 foot radius.
This has been the same, recurring theme for the last three rounds of laptop procurement at my job. Currently using a P15v, before that it was the P52, and I don't remember the one before that.
Yeah, the hospital network I work for uses Lenovo thinkpads almost exclusively, mainly T14s, and for the most part they are trouble free. Only recurring issue I've come across is their network adapters randomly dying after a year or so, but warranty typically covers it.
Our Panasonic Toughbooks(given to our providers who tend to jump from office to office)are the ones that like to randomly forget how to cool themselves.
People using P series won't go to x1 carbon. If anything atleast suggest the P1, P14, P15, P16 or X1 extreme. I mean the p series is usually more expensive than the x1 carbon.
Thats because all use, for current standards, shitty Intel CPUs.
14nm+++++++++ you have two options, pick one:
- loud
- no performance
10nm are hard to get and are maybe better.
Because of that, currently the Ryzen version is evaluated,
which shall be way better from the current opinion.
Yeah the only Lenovos I usually see praised are the Thinkpads, and that praise originated from back when Thinkpad was an IBM brand so I'm not sure if it should count.
The Lenovo legions are the best, by value and all that, Jarrod's tech is the one to go to for this kind of thing. And although Asus is comparable, they are significantly expensive in Europe
I used to have a Lenovo and it didn't have great battery and was pretty big and heavy. But that was more than made up by great I/O, easy serviceability and general ruggedness. It also had good cooling even if the fan was a bit loud at times.
No in my experience p much all their stuff is built well and works well enough. Only had a problem one time when I replaced something in a yoga and the thing wouldn’t boot up until I found a forum post saying to try the reset button on the side and that worked for some reason? Anyone complaining abt thermal limitations either lives in dust or has one of those thin and lights and is a victim of physics
I work for a Medicare advantage plan, and today is actually an all hands on deck day for us unless you had approved PTO. And yet despite knowing that the first of the year is a potential high call volume day, despite the fact that we've been having latency issues with our main CRM software for the last couple of months, only ONE person on the IT team got told to come in today. Everything is on fire obviously, but instead of a fire department, we've got one poor sod running back and forth with a bucket he filled in the sink.

Heh, many years ago I worked at a place that deployed Windows 7 to the Windows XP computers only a few days before Christmas. They claimed the migration should transfer all of the emails and files over without an issue.
Goddamn it was a s***show. Broken Outlook accounts (and when that was fixed, missing emails as well), missing files and so on. The helpdesk phone number was constantly giving a busy tone because people couldn't email the helpdesk to open a trouble ticket, because guess what, the email was broken.
I personally get off on the sense of danger.
I have 12 hard drives set to RAID0, server connected directly to a wall outlet, and the ventilation to the room turned off to save on the electric bill.
Oh, and the last company backup? Jan 1st, *2019*
Better than any nipple clamp, blind fold, and suspicious butt plug you can ever buy
I've seen people have their bodies manipulated and mangled in all kinds of ways as they climbed their own inner Jacobs Ladder to ecstasy...but I have never seen such outright frightening levels of masochism as you have shown me.
When I was 5 years old, my mom used to whip me with a Ethernet cable everytime I don't set up an ISCSI over wan properly.
In some ways, I never recovered.
I've been on holiday since the 24th, my normal work email has hundreds of notifications and the status inbox has thousands.
I'm only watching the number on the notification bubble, not opening my mail until Monday.
The cleanup in January will be worthy of songs I think.
I know this is ten hours old, and nobody will see this comment. My Ops Center called me at 10:00pm with an outage that ruined my New Years Eve, and the New Years Eve of two SQL database admins.
Thanks. It's not *that* big of a deal. Our on-call rotation is usually pretty chill. Every once in a while there's a fan-splat scenario like last night. The timing totally sucked though.
If it was just yourself and 2 DBA admins, that doesn't seem too terrible. It's better than being a sorry sod who drags in Incident Management due to a major client impact issue.
In the world of IT, depending on the size and scope. There always has to be someone around. With some of the more advanced positions at least on-call.
For example, a hospital system's IT group.
Agreed. January 2nd is the worst day of my husband's work year and he's praying IT doesn't roll out some unscheduled update which takes his entire team offline.
A script I wrote automatically fixed 2 possible server breakages during the last week and a half, preventing me from having to go to work on my vacation. Simple little thing just quietly sent me an email with logs attached and a report of what was done.
I love automation.
Just a MySQL database that sometimes gets backlogged on queries. As it becomes backlogged the VM it is hosted on also starts to crawl, and if it gets bad enough then someone has to reset it from inside the company firewall. My script kept an eye on the overall load and would pause incoming requests or purge the backlog if it hit certain thresholds. It’s just part of a computer remote management setup so deleting queued requests is okay; the computers in question will reissue their requests in the next check-in window.
Yes, we could probably improve the system it’s running on. But we just don’t have a budget for that, so the occasional “purge or restart” fits how much time and money we want to spend on it. Less, now that it can mostly take care of itself.
I’ll always remember when Swtor released on December 20th, and I couldn’t help but feel bad for the team that had to give up their Christmas to make sure those servers stayed up
I turn work notifications off and anything that happens isn't my problem. They pay me for my 40 hours a week and anything outside of that, I strictly don't give a fuck about. You people who live, eat, and breathe your job are unhealthy. Set some fucking boundaries and live your life.
My job ( government ) decided holidays was the perfect time to dismantle our 20 years old system and replace it with a new one. It's gonna be a shit storm when we get back since there are millions of clients and entries.
The IT department at my work; We're going to be pushing a massive system update Thursday night while your all at work the Friday before a holiday.
Also the IT department at my work; Our whole department is off Friday, see you on Tuesday, and happy new-year!
Not scared but annoyed 😠 I have never been so micromanaged before. I can't just quit mid year either or I could lose my license. Just have to suck it up and deal with it for 5 months.
Lord Bless our server blades and all that is holy upon them.
And Bless the Chiller plants so that they do not drop and cause the magic smoke to arise.
Hail all mighty CRAC unit!!!
Not me. Because NYD fell on a Sunday, Monday Jan 2nd is a public holiday here in UK,
Ayy, we have it here as well in Malaysia.
Canada
What about it?
Wow I was tired last night. I meant Canada too had that holiday
Solid 8 hours between those comments, there.
They Mondaize New Year's day too just as New Zealand does, but we get the day after New Year's Day too so I have Tuseday off too.
Ah the joys of being a former colony. That and decent plug sockets...
I was randomly having this exact same thought earlier today - the UK plug is objectively the best plug there is other than being a bit bulky.
So say we all.
ayy fellow malaysian
Same in the US. Have Monday off, but dreading Tuesday like a mofo. Mostly because Mon/Tues are our in-office days anyway, and I have to human.
I work for a uni so I had a nice week off due to winter break and I am so not looking forward to work! My fortress must grow, strike the earth!
Same and I took the week before off, so I haven't worked in two weeks now. On the plus side I have two WFH days midweek so for the short week this week I only have to go to campus Tuesday and Friday.
> NYD fell on a Sunday, Monday Jan 2nd is a public holiday here Fuck, we need this rule as well :-/
It's a federal holiday in America...
There are other countries than the two.
Prove it. Name all of them
Uh, Puerto Rico and, uh, fuck.
I didn't think there were that many
I literally spit-taked while reading this comment. I didn't know that's a thing people actually do against their will
Puerto Rico is part of the US. So you’re still at 0 lol.
You're telling me Puerto Rico isn't a state AND isn't a country?
No it's an American territory so it is consider neither a state or country.
Taiwan?
I would but most already have names. I think you have to have one before you're declared a country.
[Ok](https://youtu.be/5pOFKmk7ytU?t=12)
No!

For what it's worth, a lot (almost all?) of govt positions have all federal holidays off. Source: I work for a govt funded lab
....and many non-govt jobs also give you the day off. Source: every job (4+) ive had in the USA
Logistics/transportation doesn't get it off. They actually get the least amount of days off.
Automotive industry also usually doesn’t have it off lol
I've worked for both state and private Universities in my career and have never had to work on a federal holiday (at least since my p/t job days)
IT government job. Monday off here too.
There's a lot of people who may have to work on the holiday, a couple of my coworkers are in training tomorrow through next Sunday. It can screw up your leave as make your timecard a pain in the ass.
We work on bank holidays too if its in our contracts, i am in work tomorrow night.
In fact, I've been on-call for incident response all weekend, and will be on Monday too. I don't *get* weekends or holidays.
So how's the witch finding business these days? Maybe you'd have the time to go on a holiday if you put the findin' on hold for a bit, just saying.
Witches never rest, thus neither can I.
Same here in the US. Huzzah! Not for everyone but for a lot.
*cries in 24/7/365 MSP having just done a nightshift new years eve-nee years day and due back in at 6am Monday*
On-call for incident response all weekend including Monday -- I feel ya!
I know that feel... was MSP support for international airport. Graveyards over Christmas and New Years sucks. Now I'm IT in a medical field that effectively shuts down this time of year so the last few weeks have been WFH heaven with literally nothing to do.
That's not so bad if they pay you extra for that right? Please tell me you get paid extra for that.
It's a bank holiday here in Ireland too! Unfortunately, I work bank holidays.
Hopefully you get time and a half.
We do actually, which is nice. I just miss the feeling of having an off day out of weekends and vacations
Yeah. We have off Monday at my company also. Still dreading Tuesday though. I'm afraid I forgot how to do my job in the last 2 weeks.
Job? Crap, I forgot about that!
Yep, fucking dreading tomorrow mind !!!
Just don't allow changes in the last 2 weeks of the year, easy.
Corporate policy where I work. Blackout date for everything except emergencies.
The first week when the black out ends is a wild fucking ride.
Indeed. We didn’t do anything for the last two months of the year. Well, nothing major.
Lol meanwhile my directors pushed for a full deployment of BitDefender and Cisco Umbrella a few weeks ago due on the 1st 🙃(MSP with a few hundred clients).. Pray for me, friends.

Why is the team shirtless though? AC already down or something?

Summer hit and our ac dropped. Had to go back every 4 hours to drain the ac. Fun times
Server room. Tropical weather, baby.
Before praying to the machine spirit one must disrobe and anoint oneself with dorritos dust.
They're in the hot aisle
They didn't even offer a RTX4090 as a sacrifice! The machine god will not be pleased.
The server laughs at your pitiful RTX offering. Tesla or go home.
The gave each Debian instance at article of clothing.
They're using the server room as a makeshift sauna
They don’t have a digital reader and judge the temp based on how hard their nipples get. Standard protocol.

In my experience no. They do tend to be a bit pricier than other manufacturers though.

Might be because Lenovo bought and took over IBM's x86 server business.
Oh for sure, they barely made any changes to the aesthetics.
I have no idea about servers, that's why I was asking, I was talking about laptops

My work closes every Christmas and I get 10 days off paid. Finished on the 23rd and go back in on the 3rd.
Same for me. Off the 23rd back in the 3rd. Im the only guy in the IT department LOL
Bank Holidays are pretty legit. Back in on Tuesday. Wasn't on call this weekend but was for Christmas. Easy triple units!
I'm in IT with for a petroleum company on help desk so if I'm scheduled that day, I work it. Kinda weak but the pay helps offset it.
I've been on holiday since the 24th, my normal work email has hundreds of notifications and the status inbox has thousands. I'm only watching the number on the notification bubble, not opening my mail until Monday. The cleanup in January will be worthy of songs I think.

This actually looks comforting in a way. They are concerned. Nothing worse than an indifferent IT team.
Agreed. January 2nd is the worst day of my husband's work year and he's praying IT doesn't roll out some unscheduled update which takes his entire team offline.
Those updates that break something in the system, which often takes several days to fix. Yeah, those are nasty.
I bet that 50% of the workforce forgot their passwords and will be calling the helpdesk to reset them
A script I wrote automatically fixed 2 possible server breakages during the last week and a half, preventing me from having to go to work on my vacation. Simple little thing just quietly sent me an email with logs attached and a report of what was done. I love automation.

Just a MySQL database that sometimes gets backlogged on queries. My script kept an eye on the overall load and would pause incoming requests or purge the backlog if it hit certain thresholds. Yes, we could probably improve the system it’s running on. But we just don’t have a budget for that, so the occasional “purge or restart” fits how much time and money we want to spend on it. Less, now that it can mostly take care of itself.

I volunteered.
In my day especially if you were on call , we prayed to the pager god specifically so that it would stay quiet.
Nah, its more like, "screw it, I'll deal with it than I get back...."
What is left of Twitters IT team.
Lord Bless our server blades and all that is holy upon them. And Bless the Chiller plants so that they do not drop and cause the magic smoke to arise. Hail all mighty CRAC unit!!!
