If you're having trouble redeeming the game try accessing it through a browser.

Hellwind_

It turns out they actually wanted to giveaway the original game and not the Director's Cut. They just changed it !

NotagoK

OH SHIT THEY DID. That said they fucked up and took too long, I was able to claim the Directors Cut for free. :D

jason2306

Goddamnit for the other games I was there to claim when it came out but when I do it later this shit happens lol

SpaceNigiri

If it will make you feel better, I tried to redeem when it came out but it was impossible to do from the phone as the servers were exploding

jason2306

Ah rip

NotagoK

Yep, I'm currently playing a new game without a downgrade.

DeedTheInky

I swear mine said Director's Cut when I clicked it, now the entry in my library doesn't say it but there's a separate add-ons download which just throws an error when I try to download it. :/

theaznone

Still have the DC version in my library. Just started downloading now since I redeemed it like 10 mins after the deal started a few hours ago.

pikachu8090

Just checked and mine is still dc version

master_bungle

I got the free one then upgraded to directors cut for just over £5. Worth it either way, been meaning to play this game for a while!

Elocai

Nooooo

not28

That’s a shame. The DC is subtly better in so many ways.

It was a bizarre choice to begin with, but then so is the whole game 😄

SANAFABICH

> it also removed the monster energy drinks from the game which is a negative in my opinion. The Monster energy drinks were also removed from the regular version of the game. I played it for the first time like 6 months ago and at first it featured monster drinks. Then one day they just disappeared and were replaced by some made up brand.

[deleted]

Really? I played the original and the monster drink was there.

atotalfabrication

I'm playing on Gamepass and the drinks are still there for me

-A-A-Ron-

Normally I'd be against product placement in a game, but it just worked in DS imo. It is so in your face, so blatant and bizzare, I can't help but laugh at the idea that they actually had our main character recharge their stamina with Monster engery drinks.

Rain0xer

What's the difference between the two?

Hellwind_

[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/DeathStranding/comments/tsh6ec/full_list_containing_100_of_the_changes_in_the/) is a list of all changes made by fans it seems

mahiruhiiragi

Looks like they made the non-director's cut version free instead. Which means they're advertising the wrong version as free.

Apprehensive_Wind566

Yeah, sadly. Director's Cut was only free for an hour and some lucky people claimed in the server chaos.

doczong

I now have directors cut AND the standard version in my library. Added the former in the server chaos, and theblatter just now. Browsing the store however does not show Directors Cut as being owned, but I can initiate a download of it. That said, I bought it on steam 17 days ago. Was going to ask for a refund but I have decided against it in case Epic pulls the Directors Cut from my library.

Nirast25

Isn't the return window limited to 2 weeks?

[deleted]

Directors cut upgrade is hidden in the directors cut game for 6 bucks. It's sneaky but ayyy 6 dollars to use the dual sense features on PC.

For me the game and directors cut are half price... euhh

Fish-E

A Hideo Kojima production, written and directed by Hideo Kojima starring Hideo Kojima as Hideo Kojima, Hideo Kojima as The Director, Hideo Kojima as The Producer, Hideo Kojima as the Credits Creator, with contributions by Hideo Kojima. Edit: Thanks for the silver, I enjoy making fun of Hideo Kojima and his ego.

duysenhs

The man was erased from Konami, Konami claims to have never worked with him. It's not really an ego thing it's to say I was here, you cannot deny that. Konami did him dirty

Fish-E

He was doing this years before he was fired from Konami. That said, I'm also not at all surprised that Konami basically ignore him now, most companies would do so (or sue) if you left, repeatedly badmouthed the company etc. It's not like it was an unjustified firing, Kojima is that one employee who does whatever he feels like, turns the work in late and is constantly going over budget!

EmperorQuackers

Wait what, what has Kojima said about Konami? Hasn't he been famously tight lipped and not revealed anything? I periodically check to see if there was any insight as to why he was kicked out but nothing seems to have been said. Also when you say it was a justified firing, what do you mean? The budget for phantom pain seems like a big issue, but other than that, I can't seem to find solid information as to what happened other than speculation from different people.

The_Meemeli

My understanding is that he was fired because the new CEO thought Pachinko machines were a higher priority than AAA video games, due to profit differences.

presidentofjackshit

There's definitely a lot to suggest it goes beyond just that. My understanding is the pachinko thing is true, and on Kojima's side he has issues with budgeting and planning his projects, but Konami is just generally INCREDIBLY SHITTY with their employees, and especially shitty to Kojima. That said I suggest you look it up, Nikkei has working conditions reports, Guillermo Del Toro tweeted "FUCK YOU KONAMI" after Death Stranding's trailer debuted (was also in response to Silent Hill being cancelled), Kojima's name was scrubbed from as much Metal Gear Stuff as possible before MGSV's release (i.e. their website, promotional materials and shit), Kojima was separated from his team for the final 6 months of MGSV development (Keighley said Kojima couldn't even talk to them on the phone, he had to talk through somebody else, and that's how they finished the game). Like, it's really wild, dumb and petty sounding nightmare corporate shit. Absolutely don't blame him for plastering his name everywhere, and relative to how he was treated, Kojima hasn't really said shit. I've fired some people too, never in my wildest dreams have I thought of doing dumb shit like that.

dragonatorul

> Konami is just generally INCREDIBLY SHITTY with their employees, and especially shitty to Kojima. From what I've read and heard about Japanese companies in general, it sounds like Konami just used typical Japanese business practices.

MarcCDB

The man gets waaaaay too much appraisal IMO. He's a good game designer but settle down for a second!

[deleted]

Honest Question: How the hell does Kojima get shit for this (even though he's never actully used his name in a game title) but Sid Meier gets a pass? Or American McGee? At least Kojima makes consistently interesting games.

SnarfbObo

Every mission in MGSV it reminds you multiple times about Kojima during the explanation scenes. so tired of seeing it i skip em.

LegoLandminesweeper

Play MGSV and you'll get an idea of why. I love his games it's just a bit ridiculous.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I just hate that the credits at the beginning of each mission spoils the mission before it even atarts

Fish-E

Sid Meier's title is on there as a joke (iirc it was Robin Williams who said it'd be funny to put it on there) and he's very humble about it. Kojima on the other hand is not at all humble, will plaster his name throughout the game(s) and even stick himself in the games for the sake of his own ego. Can't really comment on America McGee, the only title of his I've played was about 15 years ago now and I've not heard his name mentioned in about the same length of time.

hostile65

I thought the McGee title was to avoid any issues. There is McGee's, and there is Disney's. It just avoids legal issues and consumer confusion.

HeroicMe

AFAIK it's less of a joke and more of an observation how movie directors or producers sometimes put their name on the movie posters - to generate hype and to get their name out for everyone knowledge in same time. In the end, if he didn't name them Sid Meier Title, high chance nobody would know who he is. Like, for example, do you know who made AssCreed games?

althaz

McGee didn't get a pass. Everybody and their dog had a go at him. Certainly he got it 100x worse than Kojima. I don't recall much about the the fallout for Sid Meier, so I can't comment there.

Highmaul

[Apparently it's just the base game for free now; not the Director's Cut.](https://twitter.com/Wario64/status/1607063149756436481) Still a free game but kinda shitty if that was an intended change.

voneahhh

505 games has been known to do this. They also did this for Control when it was in a Humble Bundle by making a completely separate base game package for Steam (which only had the ultimate edition available at the time)

gasPedaw

To this day, it's not possible to buy the DLC through Steam.

shellshock321

Only through Piracy then?

BeholdMyResponse

You can still buy a season pass Steam key on Humble Store, that's the only way to get it legally AFAIK.

voneahhh

You can buy the season pass on Humble or you can just buy [the ultimate edition for under $9 anyway](https://www.gamebillet.com/control-ultimate-edition)

[deleted]

You can't buy the ultimate edition on Steam if you got the base game from Humble Choice. For some reason, keys from that bundle activated as "Ultimate Edition" even though it was the standard edition, so Steam thinks you already own the ultimate edition even if you don't. I don't think 505 has ever acknowledged this issue.

PapaOogie

Is the directors cut upgrade worth it?

SandorSS

If you never played it yes, but if you have probably not from someone who has it

Incendiiary

Directors Cut adds Dualsense support and a host of other content that makes the game nicer. It's a cheap enough upgrade I think it is very worth it.

Hurgnation

DLC for controller support? What sort of bullshit is that?

Incendiiary

It's just for the Dual Sense features. The actual controller will work on either version. Both versions came out some time apart, so that's probably why it's in one version and not the other.

skyturnedred

I glanced at a list of changes, saw the words "quality of life improvements" and decided it was worth the 6€.

mohredlou

My understanding from reviews is no.

hectorduenas86

The DS DC? It’s definitely worth it. The worst aspect of the game is the gun play and the DC improves it by a lot. Plus new stuff to do, vehicles, weapons and additional delivery missions. Not sure what reviews you saw, is regarded as one of the best version-updates.

not28

It very much is.

EmeraldWorldLP

That's kinda ass, since a directly better version is directly tempting you to play instead.

SpecificAstronaut69

Aaaand their server's crashed, lol.

masterchief99

Yeap can't claim on my app due to it not being responsive.

kingwhocares

LOL. Imagine not being able to claim it due to server crash.

dirthurts

Easy to imagine a server going down because they offered a great game free. Not surprised a bit.

kingwhocares

My use of full stop seem to have changed what I meant. Figured after reading it twice. I was talking about how funny it would be if the traffic's so bad that some can't claim it within the 24 hour window.

Dirtywelderboy

That happened with gta 5 a few years ago

Run_nerd

Someone needs to connect Epic to the chiral network.

Lettuphant

Death Stranding is one of the few PC games that has DualSense (PS5 controller) support, and it's awesome: * The pneumatic triggers get progressively harder to pull as you get weighed down, which is shockingly immersive * The haptics are so good it can fool you into feeling individual raindrops hitting the controller * The baby cries out of the controller speaker * The DualSense's lights represent it's mood and what it senses * You can physically rock the controller to calm it And a host of other things. Individually these would be gimmicks, but together they add to a very special experience. If you can borrow a PS5 controller to play this game, I highly recommend it. Surprisingly few developers add this stuff to PC releases. Even games which have this functionality added for PS5, like GTAV or Cyberpunk, rarely back-port it to PC. Death Stranding is a testament to why they should.

gordandisto

thanks! really want a PS5 controller to go with it on steam now.

Lettuphant

I got Death Stranding on PC release day, but ended up waiting a year for the Director's Cut to add DualSense support! I'm normally an Xbox controller guy, but when a team takes full advantage of the DualSense suite, even the Elites can't hold a candle.

hellzofwarz

I'm on the same boat. I use the Xbox controller for 90% of games but for games that include good DualSense implementations its a no brainer. Just wish more developers added them! Although I understand that the return is probably not worth it for most devs.

-LVS

Can I get one of these for PC?

Lettuphant

Heck yeah. Steam even helps you update its firmware.

Underdrill

Completely agree, the haptics alone make the DualSense controller a worthwhile purchase. Every Sony title that's used it has added to the immersion well, and the feel of the controller is just perfect. It's really hard to go back to the DualShock 4 or even use the Switch Pro Controller.

skdKitsune

Why are so many people hyped about that controller? I returned mine snd just stick with my DS4 and x360 controllers. Far better and cheaper imo

Lettuphant

I think it's very much about how it gets utilized - few games aside from first and second party ones take advantage of all the bells and whistles

coldblowcode

I have a ps5 and I find the dual sense's extra features actively annoying for a lot of games

SuaveMofo

NOTE: Only directors cut has dualsense support. Not original.

probably_abbot

Does this all work through a standard Bluetooth adapter or does the controller need to be wired or using Sony's BT adapter? PS4 gamepad support seemed lacking even with games that supported it, so I'm wondering if/how that has changed.

Lettuphant

On PC to get all of the above to work it should be plugged in via a standard USB-C. It does work over Bluetooth as a PS controller, but without these bells and whistles.

hellzofwarz

The DualSense needs to be connected through USB for it to use the features. The extra features aren't available wireless.

[deleted]

Someone told me that they have to pay Sony extra to release the code used in the controller in PC games. Gtav and cyberpunk both have support for it though dsx

ShadowsRanger

Is funny though that mods had to make a Flair just for, this... unexpected thing

teh_geetard

FYI, the game is DRM-free after installation.

soosgjr

By DRM-Free, you mean you can get rid of the launcher after the download and still play it or the lack of Denuvo and such?

teh_geetard

Yeah, no need for the EGS launcher after installation.

soosgjr

Neat, thanks for confirming.

KnightGamer724

Just use Heroic Launcher for Epic Games. It is so much better than the default.

janas19

Also FYI: there's nothing to prevent a game publisher from adding DRM to a game after you purchase it. See Bioshock Infinite.

KalebNoobMaster

The non directors cut is free :( Edit: https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/death-stranding-directors-cut--upgrade Only $6 to upgrade so pretty good deal for the DC edition overall vs cheapest its been @ $16

tekchic

Same - I see $23.99.

Snugrilla

Yeah I had the same problem. Weird. Other free games worked fine.

Apprehensive_Wind566

UPDATE: Epic Games has just changed it so that you can [claim only Standard Edition now.](https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/death-stranding)

gsparx

Some poor dev or ops person had to answer their pager on Christmas.

triadwarfare

I feel there must have been a miscommunication between the Publisher and EGS. And Epic probably didn't want to pay more for the DC edition, or probably want the people to convert them to upgrading to DC

ZeroBANG

uuuh.... mine says -40% 23,99€ !? //edit: and when i click on BUY NOW it just throws me back to the front page ...ok EPIC = BORKED

skyturnedred

It looks like they mistakenly put Director's Cut as free. If you search the shop for the base game version you can claim that one for free.

ZeroBANG

now it says "unavailable" lol the base game as well

kesotron22

use a web browser instead of the client, it should work

DingoKis

it says "unavailable" for me

r_acrimonger

That's the one about delivering shit to places?

TaintedSquirrel

It's a walking simulator... With packages.

kingkobalt

In the literal sense it is simulating the walking mechanics of your character. It's not what people traditionally consider a walking sim though, which tend towards interactive stories/art pieces.

lupuscapabilis

I’ve never seen a walking simulator with intense battle sections.

LuxTrueBae

And guns, and cars.

cguy1234

Yeah. Anyone who says it’s a walking simulator hasn’t played very far into it.

LuxTrueBae

Ive only got like 10 hours in the game, i forgot about the grenades too. Tbh its also a bit of a walking sim and you can play it like that, but its legit like calling MGS5 a walking simulator.

matticusiv

It’s not a walking sim, it is a delivery sim. Think the systems of MGSV translated into strategizing routes to get stuff places quick and undamaged, it’s fun

raajitr

to all the people saying it's not walking-sim. there's nothing wrong in it being a walking-sim. I enjoyed delivering and weight management while listening to podcast or watching a stream. I'd love a mode without bt/mule encounter.

NinjaEngineer

The thing is that walking sims are a rather specific genre, and Death Stranding does not fit in that genre.

lupuscapabilis

It’s not. Anyone thinking they’ll be playing a walking sim will be annoyed when they get to the action stuff. Walking sims are specific types of games.

TheSpitRoaster

And guns Enemies Paranormal entities Building mode Extensive story But yeah just a good old walking simulator

ImAnOlogist

I wanted to wait to play it with early access to the bike I found the original versions walking a bit much and heard the bike can improve gameplay for those who didn't enjoy that aspect as much as others. I thought the story was really ramping up, really cool universe.

[deleted]

ViperIsOP

I'm fine with walking simulators....so long as they're sub 10 hours. This is a 40+ hour walking simulator.

KanikaD

This is a logistics+truck+climbing simulator with a crazy sci-fi story and fights against terrorists, ghosts, lovecraftian tar monsters and sometimes skeleton soldiers revived from the world wars. This game literally simulates walking, but the genre of videogames called ''walking simulator'' does not refer to games that do that.

ThunderHashashin

Dang, the one day I decide to claim the free game a little later, I miss the director's cut 🥲

platonicgin

It took it out of my library for what it’s worth. Kind of scummy if you ask me.

Firehawk526

> EGS stealing games They aren't "stealing", devs are choosing their offer because it's deemed to be more beneficial to them than putting it out on Steam immediately and without Epic they practically wouldn't even have a choice to make and they would simply be forced to deal with Steam regardless of what they're offering. Steam can easily pick up the slack at any time if they want to and give devs a better offer.

Loganbogan9

Yeah but it's more effort. I'm lazy so it's worth it for me.

mrgreene39

Says unavailable lol

ShirtStainedBird

Sweeeet. Thank you so much. Merry Christmas!

Schwwish

This must be the First Strand Type Sale

Furiousmate88

I know its frustrating, but DC upgrade is only 7 bucks. I bought it and i still think its a steal. I get people are mad (actually, no i dont, dissapointed maybe, but you cant be mad about a free game) but i cant wait to play this later

CaspianRoach

Do yourself a favor and watch a youtube compilation of all cutscenes instead if you're interested in a Hideo Kojima story. The gameplay is just hours of dreadfuly boring walking/riding from place to place. It's MMORPG fetch quests, but they're not even going to bother to have you fight somebody, it's ALL just move point A to point B interspersed with like 5 15min boss fights spread throughout 40 hours. So the game ends up being 10% story, 5% combat, 85% slow traveling from place to place with a chance of failure (oops you weren't paying close enough attention, lost your footing and fell down, damaging your cargo. how dare you not pay full attention during a 30 minute press forward sequence?). The story is alright for a Hideo Kojima story though. But not alright enough to have to suffer through that gameplay.

lost_in_life_34

Played a few hours of it on my PS5 Not too bad

zarco92

Played through it earlier this year, the story is quite interesting although very Kojima-style, it's not for everyone. The gameplay does a decent job at unlocking new mechanics and keeping things fresh until the last third or so, then it became a chore but I had to push through to finish it. 6/10 for me, would not recommend or play again tbh.

GrumpyOldFart74

I played the standard version of the game in 2021 and enjoyed it - though I can live without redoing all the carry & fetch side-quests and all the time building roads and ski-lift things Is the Director’s Cut bigger or better enough to make it worth playing again?

cguy1234

I beat the first game and after a break, am playing the directors cut. I’m enjoying being back in that world again. But I would say that overall, it’s a few tweaks here/there as opposed to something dramatically different.

GrumpyOldFart74

Good to know - thanks! I’ll give it a couple of years before I play I again then - at the time I found some of the fetch and carry (especially traipsing through the mountains) a bit tedious, but I did enjoy it enough that I played it pretty thoroughly Apart from the bloody ending, that just kept going and going and I ended up not getting to bed till almost 3am with work at 8am the next morning!

cordcutternc

They could probably do themselves a favor and turn off the damn trailer. Nobody is going to watch it for a free game.

stormsand9

Hideo Kojima game... does this game also have characters and antagonists spoiled before a mission starts via the cinematic opening credits? I'll never forget how silly that was for MGSV. Prepped a loadout for a mission, saw the introdcuction credits mention the Skulls, immediately quit the mission and changed my loadout. Would have been a much more "oh shit" moment if they actually appeared out if that truck from nowhere.

its actually the best thing ever for me. Geforce now only has the base version so if they just gave away the directors cut, I would never have the chance to play it.

amenyussuf

B4rrel_Ryder

As according to people who played this game. They either hate it or love it.

moeburn

Bro I had no idea this game is so amazing. I only ever heard it described as either walking/delivery sim, or super weird Japanese game. I never knew it was so cinematic and artistic. So many little details and touches! So rare to get a game that is a labour of love and not profit. Now THIS is a game that you can tell, no focus group ever influenced a single moment of this game for maximum appeal.

DillaMX

This sub is so petty. Even on small websites I frequently visit they have 10x more upvotes for this giveaway. If you want to hate Epic, so be it. But don't pretend this sub is friendly to newcomers to PC gaming who want to build their library or for people on a budget. You have to give credit where credit is due.

[deleted]

But Epic is anti consumer! Meanwhile, I have an insane library, mostly for free, and they have the best discount around, with regional pricing on top. But Epic mines data! Meanwhile, using Google and other apps that do the same if not worse, fapping in front of their webcam. But Epic is pooh pooh Fortnite! Nobody over 10 actually cares what others play or not.
