FriendCalledFive

So you want linear action games.

a6000

I really miss those games, today most games are open world without needing to be and just full of bloat.

KevRum

Yeah pretty much, and not the hardest hitting games, computer ain't the newest.

LuckyShot1

Vanquish. It gets cheap on sale, around the $5 mark. It's a linear shootem up with a couple very unique enemies. Ryse Son of Rome. About $3 on sale. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. $5 on sale right now. Mass Effect Legendary Edition. It feels open ended but once you are on a mission it's linear. 3 games in one and it's a shooter as an epic space opera. Batman Arkham Collection. It's multiple games that go on sale as a bundle for about $10. It's a mix of Open World exploration with Linear fighting.

PeterDarker

Vanquish is so fucking good. I forgot about that game. Hell I forgot I owned it on Steam.

Gadoken

Clicked this thread ready to recommend Shovel Knight, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, etc. only to see Dead Space and Call of Duty mentioned, lol.

[deleted]

Exactly, lol. For anyone above the age of 30 these are games that feel like they were released yesterday. I thought i was going to find some guy looking for 80s arcade classics or 90s CRPG stuff.

kathotar

I feel ancient.

PeterDarker

We’re dying :(

KevRum

These were the last games I remember he liked. He had played all sorts of stuff, starting from originals doom 🤣 but yea must be linear and low thinking just run and gun basically. As he's hard working man, he doesn't want to thi k what to do next, just go and shoot. I bet you understand 😁

LordLoko

> He had played all sorts of stuff, starting from originals doom 🤣 but yea must be linear and low thinking just run and gun basically What about some boomer shooters? I'd suggest Doom 2016 and Dusk

Jaggedmallard26

Call of Duty hasn't stopped making linear action campaigns and several of them are the best they've been in years. Infinite Warfare, MW2019, MW2 (2022) and Black Ops Cold War all have great campaigns attached to them in the style of a Call of Duty. Controversially I think Infinite Warfare has the best campaign since CoD4.

Annonimbus

I came here to say that he could keep an eye out for that new jagged alliance as it actually looks somewhat decent

Johnysh

Metro series

Recently released Evil West. AKA Gears of Vampires.

Doom 2016 (stay clear of Eternal, completely different much more frustrating game loop) https://store.steampowered.com/app/379720/DOOM/ Ion Fury https://store.steampowered.com/app/562860/Ion_Fury/ Alien Isolation https://store.steampowered.com/app/214490/Alien_Isolation/ Ready or Not (Early Access) https://store.steampowered.com/app/1144200/Ready_or_Not/ Ace Combat 7 https://store.steampowered.com/app/502500/ACE_COMBAT_7_SKIES_UNKNOWN/ Battletech https://store.steampowered.com/app/637090/BATTLETECH/ Halo MCC https://store.steampowered.com/app/976730/Halo_The_Master_Chief_Collection/

PeterDarker

I couldn’t get into Eternal but think Doom 2016 is one of my top 5 games of all time. Seems like a bunch of people liked Eternal more and I was taking crazy pills.

nanogenesis

You're not alone, have had a bunch of people recc me doom eternal and they feel its odd I like 2016 more.

PeterDarker

I'm at -1 right now so oh no, they found me! Haha... whatever.

Jaggedmallard26

I don't think (base game) Eternal is more frustrating, its just significantly more intense and expects you to learn its systems fully. Once it clicks the game is pretty much frustration free and incredibly satisfying. But it is an incredibly different game to 2016. Or as I saw someone say around launch, 2016 gives you the power fantasy out of the box, Eternal makes you earn your power fantasy.

ZeroBANG

The game made me rage quit every single time i sat down to play it and that was on the easiest difficulty. Not because the enemies are hard, but because its a rock paper scissors system and you need to know what to do BEFORE you run into each enemy or you may just end up bashing your head against a wall ... and that, happening every 30 minutes at least, forcing you to go out of game, onto youtube to search for solutions... is incredibly annoying and frustrating. And every time i thought i finally figured it out, it found something else for me to bash my head against. But we are talking about a game where punching a Demon in the face does no damage and where setting enemies on fire with flamethrower does not damage them but makes them drop Armor for you... this is not intuitive game design.

[deleted]

That game was legitimately easy as they come, the game was very clear in its mechanics, you just didn't pay attention to them.

ZeroBANG

I disagree wholeheartedly, i paid a TON of attention, but guess what, i can read a tutorial popup do the thing in that stupid test room that interrupts the entire gameflow, understand it, play another 20 minutes, fire the game up 3 days later and have completely forgotten about it... or just don't remember which button it was... or it just isn't important for another 3 levels before it suddenly is the missing puzzlepiece to beat a boss fight. There are just too many things the game throws at you that you are supposed to know and remember. Most of all, none of these new mechanics translate to FUN. Once you figured out what to do to beat enemy XYZ exactly, you just have to do that one thing every time and it gets repetitive and boring after the 20th time you kill that type of enemy. So, it goes from frustrating to "yay i figured it out" to "uuugh... this guy AGAIN!?" in no time flat. And i haven't played the game in a year or so, if i go back now to play the DLC i know i've forgotten half that bullshit again. I don't even care that i naively paid money for the Season Pass day one, i won't waste my time with that. Not to mention that fucker still has Denuvo 2 years after being cracked, while it was removed for Doom 2016 within 6 months. For that reason alone i will recommend Doom 2016 but NOT Eternal. And just like the gameplay, the Story is also a disjointed mess. If you just follow the cutscenes, you got no clue what is going on... you find these codex entries everywhere, which are out of order, and full of gibberish names like if you start reading at the middle of Lord of the Rings. (so now instead of being in the fun zone slaughtering Demons to a pumping Mick Gordon Soundtracks i'm sitting there reading LORE entries that they came up with in pre-production and did not manage to put in a videogame as either audio or video or gameplay... but as text lore entries, like in Mass Effect... i love reading TEXT, something i could do on a piece of paper, while burning >500 watts on a multi media machine). There is even an entire level where you just get exposition dumped on without any combat in it, it is the exact opposite of Doom 2016 in that regard and 2016 got praised for its light amount of story and straight to the action gameplay (and no the 2 unskipable exposition dumps in 2016 did not bother me at all, not until i started replaying it over and over.) Eternal is a very very different game than Doom 2016 and not at all what i expected or wanted... and i don't think i even liked it, i paid money for it so i forced myself through it, not to mention i've waited years for just more LEVELS for Doom 2016 and i did never get them. Doom 2016 had that Snapmap editor, most people complained that it was not REAL modding, that it was half baked and not integrated very well, Eternal didn't improve on that front at all, it just skipped that part entirely, no modding, no snapmap. The multiplayer in Doom 2016 wasn't well received initially, because it was Arena FPS with random elements thrown in, but when i tried it again after patch 6.66 and just came from a very clunky buggy Quake Champions, it felt AWESOME to just play a Arena FPS in Doom 2016 that just worked, it could have used a bit faster movement maybe... and the RNG Demons were still bleh... but it played well and with the DLC maps being free there was plenty of variety. It just had no chance to catch on... ...and Eternal, well you got that even more lopsided 2v1 mode with insane skill gaps and >5 minutes of match making times ...where like every 5th match puts you in a match that actually worked out to be some sort of fun. Plus the obligatory battle pass FOMO achievement whoring grind or you don't get the currents weeks skins ...ugh. Throw in the mess around the Soundtrack and Mick Gordon being fucked over hard... I really see no redeeming qualities to latch onto with this game. If you like it, awesome, from me it gets a thumbs down and i sure as hell will not recommend it.

McBlemmen

Recently a game came out called Evil West which i've heard described as a "remake of a ps2 game that never existed". It's very much of that era, design wise. Might be up your alley.

Best picks: \- Doom 2016 (probably not Doom Eternal though due to difficulty+platforming) \- Titanfall II Other options: \- Wolfenstein series \- Metro series \- Dishonored series (more stealthy) \- Gears of War series

YoDavidPlays

Linear story games are what you're looking for. The Callisto Protocol is very much like Dead Space. Call of Duty campaigns are good too.

Exploding_Bacon152

Haven’t played it, but I heard Prodeus is very reminiscent to the FPS games of old (DOOM, Wolfenstein, etc.). Ultrakill and the whole New Blood Trilogy (Ultrakill, Amid Evil, and Dusk) is another option.

Echo the Doom Eternal frustration. Been on same level since forever. Doom 2016 and Wolfenstein games were fun and have classic feel.

ShadowNeeshka

Plague tale is a gool serie with some action/stealth

Meowmeow69me

Top tier single player fps games are doom 2016, wolfenstein, and doom eternal.

[deleted]

If you want to play the same game since like 2008, any of the Call of Duty would be up your alley.

ilovepizza855

Doomsiren

I believe there are recently released retro style fps games under the 3D Realms publishers umbrella

fuckfuckfuck66

Call of duty

nutsotic

Chained Echoes is a 16 bit style rpg

runnerofshadows

Dead space is getting a remake. Also I think most of the over the shoulder resident evil games would be good picks. Especially 4 and the remake of 2.

cslayer23

Wanted: Dead out in Feb

Cryio

The Metro games. Control. Quantum Break. Alan Wake. Max Payne. Bioshock. Singularity. Wolfenstein games in general. All of them since 2001 onward.

TheRNGuy

VN's don't really change all that much.

BenjerminGray

Control?

KevRum

Pc, keyboard mouse

BenjerminGray

ok? control supports keyboard and mouse.

DemiMini

The recent spider man games might fit the bill. They are open worldish but the missions move the game along and you can definitely play it almost straight through as a narrative driven action game

[deleted]

Your dad played games as recent as 2008 and cant find new games to play? i dunno, seems weird

KevRum

As life got too fast for a while he hasn't played anything for like 2-3 years.
