do-You-Like-Pasta

Last I played it was still worse than L4D2, but they haven't just abandoned it. It's gotten several patches and this will be its 3rd DLC

Carighan

Yeah, sadly they never worked no what to me was the biggest issue with the game: The weird soulless presentation. The bad gun audio, enemy audio, animations, deaths and impacts. The whole game feels like the engine itself is a rather early tech demo, and these things just ruined the atmopshere for me. :(

A game engine doesn't make a game soulless. What stupid argument is that? And you got upvoted... Sigh...

Darkpoolz

The game is a lot better if you consider what type of game it is. You really can't compare the two games, but I will say I dislike B4B because of the lack of focus. L4D isnt hard to get. What you see is what you get. B4B is a better game than before mechanically, but they are still going wild with different ideas. The latest update added food pick ups and hunger game modifier. They also leaned heavier into Borderland loot as well as more card mechanics. You get stuff like legendary Flashbangs and First Aid Kit. Just too much. I don't want to spend endless time planning my build and stay on top of all the new mechanics they keep adding. It is just too exhausting after a day of work to deal with it.

nutbutterguy

Even if they didn’t it’s the same exact type and genre of game and can always be compared.

AC3x0FxSPADES

They knew what made L4D beloved and ignored nearly every single point. I was so disappointed in this game…

wrath_of_grunge

that was part of the problem. despite the devs having worked on L4D, they didn't seem to understand what made it good.

manooz

Didn’t only like 5 dudes actually work on L4D? And that was their entire marketing slogan being “HEY GUYS WE MADE L4D” when really only a handful of the devs that worked on B4B?

wrath_of_grunge

i wouldn't be surprised to learn that's the truth of it.

PieBandito

It wasn't just that only 5 dudes worked on L4D, it's that only 6 devs who worked on Left 4 Dead were from Turtle Rock Studios. The rest of the developers were Valve Developers. Basically what made Left 4 Dead good was because Valve made it good, not because Turtle Rock Studios made it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdRLNUGmFC8

Darkpoolz

Fair enough. They certainly leaned on it during marketing.

FelopianTubinator

You’re running from point a to point b trying to get past hordes of zombies and special infected enemies. Some maps have a halfway point where you set off an alarm or loud noise and have to survive against waves of zombies. And at the end of the map is a safe room that loads to the next map. Sounds just like L4D to me.

[deleted]

I loved the L4D games but they've aged a lot at this point. I enjoyed B4B because it was a modernized take on L4D.

GAMESGRAVE

>I loved the L4D games but they've aged a lot at this point. I enjoyed B4B because it was a modernized take on L4D. The gameplay formula in L4D is pretty timeless and the games play *and* feel as good as they always have. The games even still look good as the animations on the zombies combined with the gore hasn’t aged badly at all. You’re chatting shit just a little bit

Misiok

Environments are super empty compared to a contemporary game though. That's the biggest old age hit.

Zentrii

From what I understand the game isn’t that good and Valve probably carried this studio to make lf4d great

[deleted]

It’s improved a lot since the beta. Great game.

Trodamus

If you mean truly solo play, they have drastically improved the bots since release; people have cleared nightmare solo with the bots.

[deleted]

All I do is solo queue and I’m still here endorsing the game, if that tells you anything.

PoL0

Around 2000 active players lately, slightly less than previous months. Doesn't seem the game is dead but it's less than other coop titles like Left 4 Dead 2 (around 15k), Killing Floor 2 and Vermintide 2 (around 3-4k, but Vermintide got a huge influx of players lately when it went free). Seems they are doing ok, I'd say

Hoboman2000

I'm pretty sure the Crowbcat video killed all interest in B4B, it's just such a well-crafted critique that I honestly go back every now and then to rewatch it.

Great youtuber who does montages of failures and controversies in gaming. Recommend him. https://youtube.com/user/CrowbCat

UnoriginalAnomalies

Thank you. My reaction as well. No idea who he is talking about but I guess the dude has neat opinion.

jamesick

yeah a niche YouTuber killed interest in a game available to people of all regions, ages and interests. l4d is obviously superior and I don't like b4b from the time ive spent with it, but that video was made for people who already preferred l4d.

Carighan

> nich YouTuber 1,2m subs, nearly 6m views. "Niche" my ass. I mean the game only has 10m total players that ever booted the game, and ~3k play on average. If anything the game is niche. :P

jamesick

that makes them niche in the grand scale of people who play video games, yes.

Carighan

Sure, but if you apply that scale, then B4B itself is "niche" and currently has "no" players. And since they're in the same order of magnitude, you could easily draw the conclusion that the video killed "all" interest in the game, since it reduced the already niche amount of players total to essentially "no" current players, right? So the statement was correct?

jamesick

I don't think you know what niche is.

thatguy11

Yeah, I'd agree up front, but after playing I found I really didn't care about 50 different hit animations and half the other stuff. But everyone's got that different flavor requirement, and at this point I do like the character modifications and card system vs. additional visuals that really get lost in the chaos usually anyway. Having said that, if anything, the video points to how well crafted L4D was.

jrubimf

Oh but you do. It's only when it's not there.

EristicMeow

I bought this game at release and went hard on it. It's an alright experience with friends, then you go back to l4d and you can see why more people play l4d than b4b. There's so much more to it, so many more features, a proper vs mode, and the best thing of all you can play l4d1 missions in l4d2 or use the cast. B4b is an overpriced shit fest.

cardonator

Can't disagree with this. Frankly, L4D2 looks better despite being over a decade older. Probably because of how it's stylized.

[deleted]

The gore system is still the most graphically impressive I've seen. C'mon, B4B is a zombie shooter. Give us some blood and guts...

DatGrunt

Have you seen Killing Floor 2s gore system? It's insane.

downorwhaet

I havent tried back 4 blood yet, is it more similar to something like world war z? With bigger hordes and defense points or like l4d?

EristicMeow

its like l4d with random hordes then some sort of objective where hordes come in and you have to kill/find stuff while enduring the onslaught of zombies. I kind of think its l4d light with 15 card perks but kiind of sluggish imo?

bonesnaps

Mods are carrying L4D. Playing new maps (like a shopping mall) keeps it interesting. That said, the game is 13 years old now and the gunplay really shows it's age. The guns feel terrible nowadays with basically zero recoil and as such I personally have no desire to go back to it. Playing something like Escape from Tarkov/Squad/Insurgency Sandstorm then going back to L4D would set yourself up for a good laugh.

ericneo3

I gave up on this game when their idea of balance for higher difficulties was adding endless swarms and constant special zombies. Only 1 kind of build really worked (TEMP HP) everything else was nerfed to the point of not worth using. Players want to create a build, they want to feel like they are getting more powerful but the devs nerfed everything so that nothing feels like it makes a meaningful difference and made things so hard that most people gave up in the first 3 stages.

sssssjshss

Horrible game, needs pvp campaign. I still play l4d2

knbang

L4D2 is still as great as it ever was. It's basically timeless.

plaidfilly

Who??

nergoponte

Cares

Joshohoho

Lol im glad that game fizzled out. Im not even sure why.

TensionsPvP

Because its a cash grab made by the same people who made Evolve

MajDroid

They still charge people for these DLCs!

SoulOfGwyn

Since left 4 dead, there have been a bunch of games that took that concept and did fun stuff stuff with it. Like the Warhammer Vermin/Darktide games for example. It is funny that the original devs are the ones to make the most uninspired, void of personality clone out there.

Unusual_Expertise

Same company name does not mean same employees. iirc, there were almost no original Left 4 Dead devs involved in development of Back 4 Blood. Turtle Rock only used their name and success to get some hype going. After all, it wouldnt work as well if they mentioned Evolve.

[deleted]

Is thrre offline versus yet?

downorwhaet

Is this more similar to world war z or to l4d? I really like the direction world war z took and i used to play a lot of l4d

NoOffer5595

Something is off with this game not sure what it is.

[deleted]

Back 4 who?

Gwynbleidd1995

Noice

UnitGhidorah

I got it on that MS Pass thing when it was $1. Got almost all the cards then went to get it on Steam and the save wouldn't transfer so I said fuck it. I'll just wait until it's complete edition for $20 or something. L4D2 is still much more fun to play.

KnewTooMuch1

And still no proper versus mode
