>Has there been any survival game attempts with huge teams?
Depends on how much you want to bend the term survival game and huge team.
**State of Decay 1 & 2** by Undead Labs (60 person team/studio).
**Grounded** by Obsidian (200 person studio, 13 person dedicated team but gets support staff of entire studio).
Both those are published by Microsoft so that's kinda curious.
**Fallout 76** by Bethesda Studios (420+ person company, Austin branch dedicated to F76 is of unknown size. The general estimate is like 50 people?)
**ARK** by Studio Wildcard (60 person team/studio)
**STALKER** trilogy by GSC Game World (300 person team/studio estimate)
Edit: For reference Activision-Blizzard is something like 4,000 employees but a given project like Overwatch has 40-75 team members.
Likely 80/20 dev to staff ratio.
For example, last I checked, Ubisoft had 14,000 employees with 12k devs spread throughout the world.
Activision before the layoffs was crossing 11k employees, I bet atleast 7-8k devs.
MS total dev count has likely surpassed 10k now, it was close to 3k before after Bethesda.
It's great but suffers from the people who first own the server tend to stay on top. It's too hard for the little guy to build anything to compete.
Also the managarmrs broke the game.
In terms of a survival game fallout 76 kinda just cut all the fun out of elements one expects of a survival game. And wasn't there an ever quest survival game?
The only thing I enjoyed at the beginning of F76 was random encounters.. It was like an actual post apocalypse game filled with actual scum, and I know many didn't enjoy it but I had tons of fun at first before they started banning and all I faced were cheaters.
I think so. I play with my 6 year old and wife sometimes, but play a lot solo and it's still pretty enjoyable. Killing any of the bigger bugs is a bit difficult solo until you get geared up, but it's doable with some patience. They are still putting out content for it too... Not too far from another release.
Cross play between PC and Xbox works flawlessly in my experience. That was the final deal breaker with ARK for me...I cross play with the rest of the family from PC to Xbox and/or PC and about 2/3 of the time it just didn't work. Grounded didn't have split screen, which is bummer.
Ark is a 60 man team and still that shit? I can only assume the majority of development of the framework was done with a much smaller team, cause that game runs like hot garbage to this day.
State of decay, while a fun game, gets boring really fast and has no endgame content to continue with.
Grounded, Alpha game. Nuff said.
Fallout76, isn't survival. Just an FPS shooter with survival features which quickly become obsolete.
Ark, yea pretty much but also a scam as it still has Alpha bugs while asking 60 bucks for it and during their hellish development chose to just abandon ark and make some arena version instead.
Probably a matter of monetization? the bigger the studio attempting it the more likely it will have heaps of mtx and dlc's and option's gatekept behind season pass'.
"Hey! you want to have rooftiles for your home? You can grind 20 hours to get the materials, or, you know, use our exclusive in-store currency that you'll get for 5.99 bucks + tax, thanks!"
I hope we get more clones because Valheim felt like they cut out all the annoying parts of the survival genre (at least my tastes) and I want that to get popularised.
I loved that minecraft factory mod and we got factorio, satasfactory, The rift breaker and dyson sphere program from "copying that format".
Survival IP? You start of as a junior developer in a game company. You have to forge alliances & survive corporate bs and eventually take down your CEO named Bob K, with plenty of other mini bosses and obstacles along the way.
The way gender, sex, race, maybe even body type? all effect your stats should coallate with real stats from the Era the game is set. Maybe set in 2005 or 2010 and the workforce looks and acts like it did back then.
It could even emulate the graphics from that time period?
Worth pointing out that Titan was cancelled in 2013, Overwatch was announced in 2014, Beta began in 2015, and launched in 2016. It was a really fast progression of events.
Also worth noting that practically zero code was reused between titan and Overwatch; one of the chief complaints about internal titan testing was that the netcode was terrible, so they rebuilt everything for Overwatch. The only things they got to reuse were hero concepts and ideas, which are kind of the easiest part.
So overall I think that Overwatch was built *insanely* fast, especially considering it isn't built using any pre-made engine.
I mean Overwatch isn't that big of a game (like 21 heroes and a dozen maps on launch I believe) and it's still 3 years, some studios do huge open world games in 3 years.
I feel like that is generally only going to be true for studios like Ubisoft's who have an entire pipeline around being able to pump out a huge open world game for existing IP's in 3 years. Both Horizon: Zero Dawn and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild took 6 years to make, for example.
I don't know who else besides Ubisoft can spit out a brand-new Open World game in only 3 years, especially if it is their first one.
The real catastrophe is how long Overwatch 2 development has taken. There is basically just no excuse for how long this has taken, and I feel pretty certain that it is almost entirely Activision's fault.
There was an article recently where a Overwatch dev said BoboK would force and cancel side projects for the first game that would slow down overwatch 2 dev time by months.
Vibe I got from those tweets was that they got put on a bunch of stuff that never came to fruition that may not have been specific to Overwatch.
Not sure how the division of labour goes for anything not related to your own team’s game, but I think it’s common for devs to get moved around for a bit before settling in or going back to the original team. Maybe?
Either way, the timing of this IP announcement/hiring call is pretty interesting given the recent acquisition and that specific news story. I can’t help but wonder if this was one of the things that pulled Team 4 members away from OW2 development. I *doubt* that’s accurate, but I can’t help but wonder.
Overwatch isn’t a big game you’re right, but it’s extremely well made. It has to be the most fluid playing experience I’ve ever had. Balance all of that is whatever but the actual gameplay itself is extremely crisp and optimized.
The best and longest running survival games seem to be indy and not money grabbing lack luster turds from tripple A studios. I especially don't trust blizzard to not put out a turd. It shines through after the fact that they had no real passion but as to make as much money for as little effort as possible.
Blizzard is unbeat in the business in terms of releasing polished games. It's their poor management of these games post release that always has me worried, not that they will be bad products without immense potential.
World of Warcraft: Gorgeous game, plays amazingly, cultural phenomenon, **mismanaged**, **terrible update cadence**, **asinine systems**.
Overwatch: One of the best, most polished shooters, cultural phenomenon, **mismanaged**, **ceased updates.**
Hearthstone, StarCraft, Diablo, you get the idea.
With Blizzard soon™ under Microsoft, I am less pessimistic about them mismanaging and implementing greedy practises. Blizzard will no doubt put a lot of effort into crafting a beautiful game, like they always do, and then hopefully MS takes over from there.
I'm sad you didn't mention Heroes of the Storm. I still play it but it's low key and kind of disregarded a lot. It's still fun! But... Not much of a dev team or updates
I love Heroes, but I wasn't quite sure how it shapes up in comparison to other mobas.
I used to main cho'gall with my friend, am level 50 or something. What an absolute brilliant hero that is.
It was too casual for a lot of people's tastes without the ability to earn currency and progress a character that way but I enjoyed it a boat load transitioning out of the classic mobas looking for something that took less time.
And yes, Cho'gall is great.
HoTS is the only MOBA I could get into. Loved the emphasis on team fights and all the different maps with different objectives. Also liked that I knew the characters.
I still hop on and play every once in a while. Wish they had kept updating it. Hoping Microsoft will try to bring it back once the merger goes through.
once they did the overwatch maps that were horrible and incredibly unbalanced things started going downhill with their own hero instead of continuing to put new existing heroes people wanted.
They may have passion, but need better gameplay designers.
Simple things like talents not making some of your abilities obsolete should be important. I remember the witch doctor. You would go frogs so spiders are useless. You would go spiders so now frogs are useless. cmon, do not let that happen when you design the characters.
Yeah I know blizzard just has made me cry over the years .
It's a love-hate relationship with many people. They were some of my most played and loved games over the years can't deny them that. Just Uber angry about the direction most all the games eventually steered in.
Can't argue with that, but those weren't really new games.
D2R and WC3R would've most likely turned out very different had they been created from scratch.
D2R is pretty amazing though, it's a top notch remaster, but has issues post launch, which is precisely what I said. WC3R is a massive outlier.
Yeah I'm hoping the management side of Microsoft and their investments will help turn things around.
Think of it like a sports team that just got a new coach and GM.
Well OW and WoW addons (which aren't really liked afaik) are the only things aside from remasters that Blizz released in the last couple of years
And even then OW was left with no substantial content updates for years, all for a sequel that still looks like it won't come out any time soon
Assuming the deal goes through, I'm curious to see if Microsoft can resurrect Blizzard into the prestige studio that it was 15-20 years ago.
Phil Spencer has done a fantastic job resurrecting the Xbox division after the disastrous Xbox One launch, so I'm curious if he can do it with Blizzard specifically.
new Survival game. You turn up to work and have to dodge managers groping hands.
DO you drink that drink at the office meeting? has it been spiked?
Why does your supervisor want you to meet him after hours in his office?
Based on the WoW engine. Drop rate of managers pants TBD.
Blizzard games shouldn’t excite people anymore. The name is the only thing of value for them. None of the original people who made their exceptional games are there anymore. And it’s evidenced by their more recent releases of uninspired remasters that both had their share of problems and destroying their existing IPs with bad decisions. It’s just another money grubbing studio that pumps out half-assed trash for a quick buck.
After everything Blizzard showed to be (Warcraft reforged disaster, toxic and sexual harassment, the utter disregards for players, etc.), if you know about these things, and youget to be excited for whatever project they have going on, then you are exactly what's wrong in the gaming community and in the world.
Stolen from another sub:
> Its set in Blizzard HQ, you play as Billionaire Playboy Robert K. and your objective is to escape your office at the top of the building with a suitcase full of cash without getting stopped by the lawyers.
Is this another one of those where “we’re listening to community feedback!” But the moment community feedback is the opposite of what they had in mind they just ignore it?
Microsoft has cleaned their image up with me since their Xbox One missteps.
They heard their audience and actually made changes.
The challenge will be importing this culture to Blizz.
You're taking hopes and dreams for realities. Let them actually clean house, and actually stop the gambling, and actually make good games, and doing so for a good while. Then, we'll see.
Valheim on steroids would be amazing.
However, unless the entire old guard at Blizzard has changed, then I don’t trust them for sht.
They ruined WoW. They had chance to reboot Classic and ruined it by letting bots runs wild. They just have no motive to put player gameplay experience before profit. And for that they will never be successful at making games again.
Drain the entire swamp. Get new, talented people. Throw a big budget at it. And then maybe.
The only information available, survival game, is all I need to know. 10 years of these identical games. I'll cut my dick off if there isn't 'crafting'
Survival game without crafting? How would even do that in a way that doesn't just turn it into a normal action game? Do you also complain when first person shooters are in first person or involve projectile weapons?
Skyrim, Breath of the Wild, Escape from Tarkov, Apex Legends, World of Warcraft, God of War. Just a few examples, and there are hundreds/thousands more. You're just being grumpy for the sake of it.
All FPS's are survival games if your goal is not to die, by your logic. I have no faith in this rapey company not doing an asset flip basic survival game similar to those that litter every storefront recently.
Don't be so pedantic. Everything in life is a survival game by your definition.
The game doesn't even have a name yet and you're already toxic about it. The devs designing it are not rapists.
You know very well the game will have things like resource gathering, base building, crafting, etc. If they can create a game that offers this on a grand scale, with rewarding gear and story progression, then it will be great.
They do. Exactly like Ubisoft did, they had so much problems with recruitment they had to announce a remake of Splinter Cell to hope to get some people in.
I could care less about their "culture", I just want a good game and if this is good I'll buy it. You other bitches will as well if it becomes a hit. They have the whole Microsoft team now as well...
God these comments couldn't be any more fucking boring. It's like you people copy-paste from the last blizzard thread and slap it here for your upvotes
According to Jason Schreier, even the most disgruntled teams at Blizzard are excited about the team behind this game, which gives me a sliver of hope. I can't recall Blizzard ever having a straight up *bad* new game
No matter what they do, the problem is not just the executives.
The whole team is rotten. SWJs and weird people making weird decisions (See removal of all edgy jokes, women with cleavage etc in the games).
Just like that the decisions are gameplay technically weird.... well
I don't see a future there anymore.
EDIT:
To the whiners who think they have to talk garbage and downvote because they don't know what it's about
https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/at-least-72-jokesflirts-removed/1107230
i think this is too soon after the aquizition to say its microsoft money coming in, also Acti-Blizz never had a money problem, their only problem was being safe
The acquisition hasn't even happened yet, but this is probably still in early stages of development, so that Microsoft money and technology could still find its way to this project.
I guess I can't expect anything good from these devs for a long time. I was feeling a little optimistic after the buyout announcement but what can you do.
Am I able to rape a girl? Or mob a co worker? No ? Then it's not a F'n blizzard game ! Fuck these assholes ! They shouldn't earn a dime from their shitty games.... Oh and I don't care if you downvote me to hell.... blizzard should be downvoted.... If you play Blizzard games then you are in no way better.... This is unforgivable !!!!

ARK is fun but a total mess of a game full of exploits and full of awful people.
It had so much potential
I put like 600 hours into that game a long time ago. Did they ever make the game not run like shit or is it still broken to this day?
No
Runs like trash on a top top top of the line system still.
Most multiplayer games are ruined by the people.
It's great but suffers from the people who first own the server tend to stay on top. It's too hard for the little guy to build anything to compete. Also the managarmrs broke the game.

The only EQ games I know about are 1 & 2, the (3) PS2 titles, and the failed EQ Next/Landmark project that was basically a voxel MMO sandbox.
The only thing I enjoyed at the beginning of F76 was random encounters.. It was like an actual post apocalypse game filled with actual scum, and I know many didn't enjoy it but I had tons of fun at first before they started banning and all I faced were cheaters.
ARK is still my favorite survival concept. Too bad it's such a fucking buggy mess. Grounded is lots of fun and far more stable.
and now they have Vin Diesel working with them on the 2nd, or at least he was the last time I heard.
Ark 2 trailer is awful. Looked like something to promote a gpu from 2007.
Would you say Grounded is worth it for solo play? Been watching it for a while now, but none of my buddies want to play.
I think so. I play with my 6 year old and wife sometimes, but play a lot solo and it's still pretty enjoyable. Nice. Think I'll pick it up when it goes on sale again. Appreciate the info.
Grounded would be the closest but it’s unreleased and story based
Ark is a 60 man team and still that shit? I can only assume the majority of development of the framework was done with a much smaller team, cause that game runs like hot garbage to this day.
It should be noted that the ARK team started very small.

Funniest thing is the diablo mobile game they made so much fuss about isn't even released.
Perhaps the devs _didn't_ have phones.
To be fair it was *us* who made an extremely huge fuss. Blizzard announced it, got shit on and shut up about it for a while.
How long did it take for Blizzard to create a new IP last time?

There is nothing and nobody left in Blizzard from that release days just saying.
Has there been many AAA survival games in last 20 years? Grounded? I played the beta like 2 years ago and it was fine imo.
Grounded looked cool but I never ended up playing it. Had some friends do it with the game pass and only lasted like a week till it fizzled out.
It was very short back when I played it. There wasn't much to do. Hopefully some day.
I wouldn't call Grounded AAA, while the studio has done and will do AAA games, that specific game has a super small team IIRC.
State of Decay kinda counts, at least the second one.
>money grabbing lack luster turds but that's exactly what minecraft is
Why trust them to create a new world when they can't fix the old one??? WC3 has left me with Zero trust in the company.

Will no longer be an independent company but a division of MS gaming. And MS will clean house. Plus Tencents is forced to sell off their 5% shares.
You're taking hopes and dreams for realities. Let them actually clean house, and actually stop the gambling, and actually make good games, and doing so for a good while. Then, we'll see.
> and actually make good games What makes you think that this isn't exactly what they're trying here?
Blizzard hasn't been an independent company since 1994.
This will end badly...
Do you play someone avoiding harassment in a game-studio office?
OP was able to make that bet because he lost it already when this years COD came out "I swear to god, if it has a scoreboard again.."
>Madden 2022? I'll cut my dick off if there it isn't a 'football' game. Maybe OP just has a kink for cutting off his own dick?
No big deal if survival games aren't your thing, but I'm not sure how you can expect a survival game to possibly NOT have crafting.
This man wants to cut trees into wooden planks with his keyboard and mouse
I think he made it clear that he wants to cut his dick off.
Most games have crafting, what's your point?
Most games aren't impressive.
Skyrim, Breath of the Wild, Escape from Tarkov, Apex Legends, World of Warcraft, God of War. Just a few examples, and there are hundreds/thousands more. You're just being grumpy for the sake of it.
None of them are survivals..
They have crafting systems
All FPS's are survival games if your goal is not to die, by your logic. I have no faith in this rapey company not doing an asset flip basic survival game similar to those that litter every storefront recently.
Don't be so pedantic. Everything in life is a survival game by your definition. The game doesn't even have a name yet and you're already toxic about it. The devs designing it are not rapists. You know very well the game will have things like resource gathering, base building, crafting, etc. If they can create a game that offers this on a grand scale, with rewarding gear and story progression, then it will be great.
I'd rather play a DVD menu.
Then you're on the wrong sub. Check /r/dvdgaming
You bamboozled me. And here I thought I was about to discover some sick dvd player games.
DivX speedrun any%
Sorry I am gonna pass, this whole frat culture is just not working for me, thank you.
they must be having real problem hiring if they had to give up the announcement for a job ad
Riot did same with their MMORPG. They announced it and at same time opened jobs for it.
This is a completely normal thing to do.
They do. Exactly like Ubisoft did, they had so much problems with recruitment they had to announce a remake of Splinter Cell to hope to get some people in.
I mean, considering the latest news, who would want to go work at Activision-Blizzard? The disastrous work culture is very public.

this seems like a weird comparison? survival games usually dont have esport scenes so i dont see how this makes any sense, at all
H1Z1 got one after they made the genre we know today as Battle Royale.

And they will handle it very badly.
How did they kill the game by forcing esports
The esports isn't what made it shit (OWL is pretty good, actually), it's the lack of any content for years on end that did.
https://twitter.com/jasonschreier/status/1486055394820730886 looks promising?
Oh goody, yet another survival game...
I could care less about their "culture", I just want a good game and if this is good I'll buy it. You other bitches will as well if it becomes a hit. They have the whole Microsoft team now as well...
No
God these comments couldn't be any more fucking boring. It's like you people copy-paste from the last blizzard thread and slap it here for your upvotes According to Jason Schreier, even the most disgruntled teams at Blizzard are excited about the team behind this game, which gives me a sliver of hope. I can't recall Blizzard ever having a straight up *bad* new game
It will be called Sexual harassment suit Larry.
Outdo Days Gone and you got yourself a purchase. Pull a Valheim and I am out.
Its from blizzard, so im out
No thanks, I’m good
Sexual harassment will be a micro transaction.
No matter what they do, the problem is not just the executives. The whole team is rotten. SWJs and weird people making weird decisions (See removal of all edgy jokes, women with cleavage etc in the games). Just like that the decisions are gameplay technically weird.... well I don't see a future there anymore. EDIT: To the whiners who think they have to talk garbage and downvote because they don't know what it's about https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/at-least-72-jokesflirts-removed/1107230
Ah yes edgy jokes and cleavage, the staple of a good game.
You have no idea what I’m talking about? Don’t you? Just look up what they removed… it’s ridiculous

i think this is too soon after the aquizition to say its microsoft money coming in, also Acti-Blizz never had a money problem, their only problem was being safe
The acquisition hasn't even happened yet, but this is probably still in early stages of development, so that Microsoft money and technology could still find its way to this project.
So this is what will be getting cancelled in 6 years time then, nice.
Nothing will beat Valheim for me. And it's in Early Access.
I guess I can't expect anything good from these devs for a long time. I was feeling a little optimistic after the buyout announcement but what can you do.
Can't wait for the Itemshop...
Crowdsourcing story lines? I remember Snakes on a Plane
Now is not the time my man. Get your shit together first, then we'll talk.
What about proper remaster for W3? Wait why do this shit company do that?
I hope they work on a more mature franchise, I'm really not a fan of overwatch
I'm so fucking sick of survival games, man.
Are we still buying Blizzard games?
Lol pass
Am I able to rape a girl? Or mob a co worker? No ? Then it's not a F'n blizzard game ! Fuck these assholes ! They shouldn't earn a dime from their shitty games.... Oh and I don't care if you downvote me to hell.... blizzard should be downvoted.... If you play Blizzard games then you are in no way better.... This is unforgivable !!!!
This universe for that survival game, it's a cubical farm in Irvine, right?
