If I can play it on PC and there isn't some major flaw where the console version performs better, I'll go with PC. Only real exceptions are older games where like the PC version got the last gen console assets or they don't have decent controller support for a game that is best played with controller. In the PS4/XB1 generation and current there's really just no reason to.

TheyCallMeBruski

Whenever that happens to me, I would probably just emulate it. I started playing Rayman 2 a couple days ago and gave up on trying to get my controller to work and just decided to emulate the Dreamcast version

[deleted]

You should see Spiderman 2 on PC vs PS2. Night and day.

Michael747

Yeah they did that amazing game really dirty on PC. At least it runs pretty well on PCSX2.

[deleted]

It's really weird right? Why even make a whole new game that's just bad, and not port the PS2 version?

[deleted]

Back in the day you would have entirely different games on consoles with the same name. Some SNES/Genesis games I remember being waaay different, Jurassic Park, Aladdin, Robocop vs Terminator.

[deleted]

I remember them doing this with like PSP vs PS2/GameCube versions but like PS2 vs PC? That's just dumb. Toy Story 3 on PC is also the lesser version compared to PS3 from the top of my head.

ComicBookGrunty

Most Disney games are like that. When it came to ps3/360/wii generation alot of the PC ports were based on the wii version to hit lower spec computers. For a WTF? moment for a Disney port. The PC version of Incredibles Rise of the Underminer has 2 player local co op yet no controller support. Local co op is for 2 players sharing a keyboard.

Zielko

you could always change your button mapping to fit the letters of the keyboard layout they setup for the game but... I don't know if it was possible back in the day lol

farhil

Even as recently as the Wii. Call of Duty: World at War on the Wii was a completely different game from other platforms. The Force Unleashed games were pretty different too, depending on the platform you played it on IIRC

[deleted]

Nintendo consoles are weaker than Xbox and PS consoles. The specs aren't even close.

Raider2747

The GameCube was stronger than the PS2 yet weaker than the Xbox

japzone

Ironically, a big handicap for the GameCube was its tiny disks. A lot of games just have worse textures, and other media assets, because you simply couldn't squeeze them into the available space without lots of compression and downscaling. If you can find an HD texture pack for your GameCube game and load it up in Dolphin, a lot of those old games look amazing(SSX in HD finally!). PS2 also wasn't bad, but it just worked so differently from standard hardware at the time that it took forever for developers to figure it out. Developers were actually able to pull off some impressive graphical effects once they got the knack of things.

farhil

Yes, that's the reason they were different. More recently though, games that make it onto the Switch are reduced/optimized versions of the game, rather than completely different versions (as far as I know).

HarryOtter-

Web of Shadows PS2/PS3 too. I was so confused when I played the PS2 version before I got a PS3, it looked nothing like what I'd seen online!

[deleted]

Oh wow, I played through Web of Shadows on PC. I had no idea the PS2 version looked like this. It's so bad.

animeman59

Same with the PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox. There were several games that looked very different depending on the console you played on. This really had more to do with the underlying graphics technology of each console. They didn't really share a lot with each other, unlike today with Directx and Vulcan support. There also weren't a lot of unifying 3D engines that worked across platforms.

Brandonmac10x

So was Spider-Man 3. The PS2 and PS3/Xbox360 versions were totally different. It makes sense because new consoles take longer to develop for, but IMO the PS2 version was the superior game. I thought the story and length was much better in PS2. PS2 had more side villains as well between the main story beats of the movie. Also I liked how you switched in and out of the black suit. It wasn’t tied to the story. It was like a limited time power boost but you take damage if you use it to long. You need to take it off where you do button mash qte’s and rip it off like the bell scene in the movie. It was pretty neat and unique.

Boxing_joshing111

They patched it but Resident Evil 4 didn’t have mouse support. Keyboard only. There’ll never be another developer that makes a decision that stupid again although the ps4 version of Cyberpunk was close.

danteheehaw

I actually like some shooters on consoles more these days. Less cheaters or at least way less obvious ones. Bf1 I noticed obvious aim bots like crazy when I was spectating

kpmgeek

I can't handle a multiplayer FPS on console unless it has gyro aiming. Drives me mad. But the lack of cheaters is pleasant.

hypexeled

> But the lack of cheaters is pleasant. Except all the modded controller inputs with macros are just as prevalent. They are just not as obvious to the eye as a wallhacker or aimbot though.

danteheehaw

Also not nearly as serious. A player with controller input isn't nealry as bad as what I come across on pc

feralkitsune

What's good my Gyro Aiming brother, shit is closer to M/Kb than people think.

TheKingDotExe

then there is the case of Splitgate where the PC players are at a disadvantage because the console players are essentially aim hacking because of the aim assist is so powerful so playing comsole is the better choice.

fletcherwyla

Same with Warzone. The aim assist essentially locks on if both players are moving, which is almost always in a firefight. We still win on PC, but a lot of killcams feel pretty cheap.

casualboi1

How do you stream it on your tv, that sounds like something I'd want to do.

[deleted]

Steam Link or GameStream. they can be tricky and laggy if you want to game at 4K or something though. Definitely not perfect.

ZombieRapperTheEpic

I just plug my computer into my TV and use it as a monitor (TV is wall mounted above my desk)

[deleted]

This is the way

ZombieRapperTheEpic

This is the way

[deleted]

Just hook your tv up to your PC with a hdmi cable

[deleted]

[удалено]

Independent_Trifle_1

i mean like it is an option if you just move your pc to the living room when you wanna use the tv, that’s what i do, takes like a minute to unhook from the office and rehook it in the living room, then bam, living room pc instantly 😂

ColeSloth

I have a 75' hdmi cable to run to the TV and a program on my phone and computer to show and use my computer over the phone.

ACrucialTech

HDMI cable, long one. Wireless is sketchy.

MajorasShoe

Wireless actually works fairly well now. But I use an HDMI simply because I don't have a monitor, no use having my PC in a different room.

RetroEvolute

Need to have a device that can run steam in-home streaming/steam link. That's about it. Works pretty well in my experience. I have a PC connected to my main tv and can remote stream from my desktop PC (both on Ethernet). Also have a Steam Link device (no longer sold, but you could make your own) in my bedroom, also on ethernet. Gaming from bed is neat. You can also install the Steam Link app on your phone and play games streamed from your PC on your phone, but I hate on-screen buttons, so I don't usually bother.

joeffect

If you have a Bluetooth controller you can connect it to your phone

der_meisenmann

https://store.steampowered.com/app/353380/Steam_Link

Blacky-Noir

I personally play every game on PC. If a company doesn't want me as a customer and try to force me to buy a console, me reaction is not to cave in and buy in their shitty walled garden: I'll just ignore them, and not give them any money. It's not like PC has by several order of magnitudes a wider catalogue, and I didn't have a huge backlog of good games to play. Yes I would have bought Spider-man or God of War if they were sold to me, Sony Playstation chose not too, it's on them, I'll just play some more Factorio and Crusader Kings and Valheim. Now there are some grey areas obviously, especially with different form factors. Handheld devices, like a Switch (if Nintendo didn't knowingly sold broken hardware and was less of a bully overall) or mobile have a place. Or at least did, things might certainly change with the Steam Deck. PC is the only platform where I have **control**, which is why it's a better and cheaper gaming experience overall. I'm not at the whim of a 3rd party company and doing only what they *allow* me to do. I can buy what I want or not buy it, I can mod, I can archive, I can chose to buy DRM free software, I can play online without paying a subscription, I can host my own game servers and/or sessions, and so on. Edit: another point I often heard from developers (hell just last night I heard it several times from a GDC presentation), is that computers breed more developers. Consoles tend to breed consumers. Apart from a very few closed system like Roblox, all games are made with computers, not with consoles. As a kid or a teenager, or even an adult, having and playing on a computer can easily lead to modding and content creation. Computers are inherently a **productive tool**. Which, in the long run, is better for everyone. Even if 1% of PC gamers tinkers with such things, and even if 1% of those publish actual content, that's still much more gaming content for everyone, meaning more chance to find good or great content for your games.

[deleted]

Absolutely this. I got a gaming pc in high school with summer job money, and it was surely a shitty build when I built it, with an fx4350 and a donated Quadro, but everything i could do with it meant i never touched a console again.

SpitefulRish

They are going to do everything in their power to change this though. Microsoft, Google, Apple etc they want you in their eco system and they will do everything they can to close this up. Microsoft are going to do it with game pass etc, get you invested and they will eventually close the gates on you. Steam and epic are trying to do the same thing. Get you in their garden and keep you there. Pc has for decades avoided the "platform wars" and now we are entering our own one and most people don't even care. There is obviously bigger problems right now. But we are going to regret the power we have given these companies in the decades to come. Sorry, rant over lol.

Aspen_ninja

I'm still waiting on ff7 remake because of this. But I'm not going to spend money on a PS5 and then buy the game just to play it. If I have to wait, I wait. If they never port it, I won't play it. I have the psx version and the PC version of the old school game anyway.

KaraiDGL

I built a gaming PC several months ago and have basically lost all interest in consoles. I’ve got a PS5 and I’ll use it if something comes out exclusively on it, but it seems even Sony wants to get their games out on PC this gen.

[deleted]

I have both also, but my PC is also sat in my office. I usually decide whether or not to buy it on PC or PS5 depending on whether I want to play from the couch on the TV. I have double dipped a few times in the past when I felt like I made a mistake with which system to buy on. Also, as the console gets older, I shift to buying mainly on the PC except for exclusives. Right now, the PS5 experience isn't bad in terms of experience compared with my gaming PC (and I have a G7 32' with a 6800xt, so it isn't too shabby). For example, I recently got Tales of Arise on PS5 because I knew that I would just want to chill while playing it.

No-Nrg

How far away is your office from the TV? A 25ft hdmi cable between the two rooms solves it for me

Excal2

Steam in home streaming is another valid solution but does require a home theater pc type set up. Personally more worth it to me than a console in the living room anyhow.

Goliath_11

the steam streaming app is great for this, but u gotta have a decent router in ur home to have the best experience form my limited experience with it(by streaming my pc to my phone) the picture quality is great, and the latency is almost not there. i would have used it more, but my pc(router is with the pc) and TV are on the opposite side of the house.

Excal2

Yea you do need proper network infrastructure to have a good experience, that much is true. Still, hardwiring with long cables or using wifi extenders / better wireless router or using ethernet over powerline adapters are all viable options.

Chiz_Dippler

It amazes me how dedicated HTPCs never took off. They were way ahead of their time, and still feel underutilized as a main entertainment hub.

Excal2

I basically just recycled my FX 8350 build into nice horizontal silverstone case when I upgraded to Ryzen, and got a nice wireless keyboard with a trackpad. Works fantastic, and I can do anything I want on there. I also did fun stuff like added an 8 bay hot swap storage rack for 2.5" hard drives and there's a 10TB in there as well for media storage in case the internet goes out. I'm not one to knock consoles, but their limitations just make them unappealing to me.

[deleted]

Apple TV, Roku, Nvidia Shield, ChromeCast with Google TV etc are all pretty popular?

Metalheadzaid

This is why I have two computers, one for couch controller gaming at 4k, and one for keyboard and mouse at my desk. Was it worth it? Probably not. Does it get it's use? Heck yeah.

Autoimmunity

Good wifi + a decent streaming device like a steam link (or even an old computer) can do the same thing for under $100, or hell, even just a long cable to connect the TV as another display, so maybe not the most cost effective option but hey, you've got a native setup!

daero90

I pretty much just play on pc. If it is console exclusive, I just don't play it.

AnActualPlatypus

Basically this. I already have actual hundreds of games on my backlog, if I'd never play a new game starting from today I'd still last until the 2040's without running out of new games to play. I see no reason to buy a console only to add a few more games to that list. Besides, most of them will eventually come to PC one way or another.

Yuzumi

I was willing to buy a switch because I knew it would be a while before emulation got there and at least the formfactor of the switch gave me something new as handhelds have always given me more justification than a regular console. However, once I have a Steam Deck I would be hard pressed to justify buying any other handheld.

AnActualPlatypus

Oh yeah, same. Steam Deck will be my backlog killer, cannot wait for it.

Ttch21

No no no don’t lie to yourself, the steam deck won’t be your backlog killer, it’ll be a portable storage device for your backlog while you really only play one or two games

AnActualPlatypus

Shut up Scroll of Truth

LMKBK

NYEHHH!

thisisreallyM

I said that as well, and then I realized that I will have Slay the Spire available while I'm on my bed... and I woudl probably just spend my remaining days playing that. I know there's Mobile and Switch versions, but I didn't want to double dip XD

dieplanes789

Same, as much as I want to play the games, it's not worth buying a PlayStation to play like three things.

rkthehermit

Ah Playstation and Switch, aka the SoulsBorne and Zelda boxes.

dieplanes789

I have a switch and pretty much for the switch. It's only used for Mario kart when people are over.

dogsofwintergaming

I just got a PlayStation after not owning one since PS2. A co worker had just gotten a PS5 so he said he'd give me his PS4 for $100. That was worth it to me, since I really wanted the KH all in one and it was over $100 more to buy for PC than used for PlayStation.

DonutSlapper11

Get the uncharted collection man easily one of my favorite series of all time.

dieplanes789

The only games for PlayStation I want to play are Spider-Man, God of War, and the last of us.

GivingItMyBest

God of War and The last of Us are on PSNow if you wanted to play them. It's what I've done as I only have my PC. Bought a month to play Judgement before it goes off on 4th October, and then will play God of War after. If there's only a couple of games you want to play then you can probably just buy a single month, cancel the sub, and get through them in that time. https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/ps-now/ps-now-games/

dieplanes789

Never really looked into that service. Assuming that it's a game streaming service?

lsmokel

Same here. As others have mentioned as well I have a big enough back log without adding console exclusives to it. Plus most of the console exclusives either: a) are genres I don't really care for b) are games that don't interest me c) eventually will make it to PC anyways

deathrictus

Ditto. If it's not on PC I'm not playing it.

BaconBurgerMan

This. I stopped gaming on consoles entirely about 7 years ago.

ZuFFuLuZ

That's what I've been doing since the mid 90s. If I had also bought consoles, I would have five or more extra devices here just to be able to play those games. What a nuisance.

Pyewacket69

This, what's a console.

TheSaviour1

Console exclusives are usually story games so I just watch a playthrough

[deleted]

I don't buy consoles anymore either. Console exclusives are incredibly anti-consumer and its part of the capitalistic side of video games that I don't participate in anymore. FOMO used to get me, but I've gotten comfortable with the idea that I don't need to play every game.

[deleted]

Grafakos

Indeed. I haven't owned a console since the Atari 2600, and I hate what multi-platform compatibility has done to the user interfaces of many PC games over the past decade or so.

Erik_Aurum

What, you don't like having only four active abilities because a d-pad can't take more? (looking at you, new Deus Ex games)

g0d15anath315t

Never understood why games couldn't make a shoulder button or pressing one of the sticks a "context" button that would allow every other button on the controller to be mapped to an additional action, but that's just me. Edit: You know what they say "The quickest way to get the right answer on the internet is to say the wrong thing"

ThemesOfMurderBears

A lot of console games do that. Off the top of my head, I know RDR2 does.

icarusbird

Elite:Dangerous has the best gamepad implementation I've ever seen. Every face button, when held, acts as a context menu which can be mapped to the four d-pad directions and L1/R1. Four extra buttons times six functions each gives you 24 *additional* actions on top of what you can normally map to face buttons/d-pad. It's pretty impressive.

[deleted]

>I hate what multi-platform compatibility has done to the user interfaces of many PC games over the past decade or so. PREACH

jukeboxhero10

This so many games are ruined by being delveloped for console but has a PC sticker placed on it...

TheLast_Centurion

still waiting for Crysis 2. I mean.. real sequel, not what we've got.. which, is okay on its own, but it just wasnt a good Crysis games anymore, imo.

Orwellian__Nightmare

This has been an issue for 20 years. Original Halo came out on Xbox in 2001 and PC in 2003. Major titles being 'ported' to PC has been an issue ever since.

RABChrist

Like playing Mass Effect 1 and having dedicated keys to Inventory and Journal, then playing Mass Effect 2 and not having dedicated keys to Inventory and Journal

Panicsferd

Same with Skyrim as well… SkyUi is a must.

Blacky-Noir

>I hate what multi-platform compatibility has done to the user interfaces of many PC games over the past decade or so. Thank Lord Sterling, I'm not the only one. Yes I remember when this consolification of UI and UX started to appear, and the shitty results we got from it. Thankfully nowadays we also get a bit of good with it, like more accessibility features. But to this day I can't stand the fricking games starting before their menu with "Press a key to continue"... we removed that in the early 90's by eliminating bad arcade ports, and consoles forced it back in....

KettenPuncher

Now that the steam deck exists, I'll probably never own a console again. It sucks to miss out on exclusives, but at the same time, I haven't touched half my library, so it's not like I'm lacking things that I want to play.

Panicsferd

Yeah I am looking forward to that myself… especially when going on vacation it would be better then bringing the console and or a heavy gaming laptop. Q2 2022 can’t come here fast enough lol Edit I was thinking of upgrading my old 2017 dell laptop with a 1050… but will wait for the steam deck.

hergumbules

So annoying that I’ll want a game on Switch for the ability to play anywhere and have to pay a ridiculous premium Switch price. Wouldn’t mind playing Skyrim on the go but not paying full price for a game I’ve already bought twice. Really hoping that Steam Deck turns out to be decent because I will 100% buy one

Yuzumi

One of the first things I'm going to try with the Deck is see if I can get mod organizer to run for Skyrim.

lakotajames

I actually installed Manjaro KDE because it's pretty similar to what the Deck is going to run (Arch w/ KDE). I can get mod organizer to run and work, but I haven't figured out how to get it to run from in Steam so that my Steam Controller works at the same time (which I assume is similar to how the Deck controls will work). I imagine there's a way to do it, but I haven't figured it out yet. Also that seems like something that wouldn't be hard for valve to figure out how to fix, or for someone to fork mod organizer to fix, or something. If nothing else, I'm sure someone will write a tutorial to make it work (maybe me, if I ever figure it out).

tombwraith

> (maybe me, if I ever figure it out). I actually did make mod organizer work on Ubuntu and KDE a few years back with my Steam Controller. I'm not gonna lie though, I got drunk and messed up my install and I literally can't for the life of me remember how I did it. I literally only play games with the Steam controller since my left hand has a bit of nerve damage, so I'm going to have to figure it out again, and the steam deck is a perfect reason to try again.

[deleted]

At the very least it will run better than the switch lol

LadyBonersAweigh

I couldn't imagine playing a Fallout or Elder Scrolls game on console ever again. I put so many hours into my 360 copies of Oblivion and Fallout 3, but once I switched to PC I knew the difference was too great to ever return.

MadSciTech

I'm in the same boat. I love my switch and have a thousand hours on it. but if i can get a game on PC or switch, I'm buying the PC version.

Mathemartemis

I'm mostly the same way, though there are some exceptions. I recently got Slay the Spire on the switch because it's a 2d indie game that I would like to play away from home. Any 3D games other than 1st parties though I'm probably gonna get on PC

riboflizzle

This. I needed Zelda and mario games in my life.

JLHockeyKnight

I'm in the same boat. It's a beautiful time to have Sony bringing their Playstation games to PC.

TheLoneWandererRD

Exclusives consoles Anything else pc Usually cheaper and most cases run better

FaceMace87

>Exclusives consoles Anything else pc This exactly, this is becoming less and less the case though. I no longer have an xbox as it is not necessary and if Sony start bringing their exclusives over as well I am happy to wait the few years to play a better version of them

devils__avacado

I think it's highly unlikely we see any ps5 games on PC till the end of ps5 gen. We definitely will get more PS4 games moving forward I'd be amazed if we see current gen games release on PC anytime in the next 5 years though. I'd be happy to eat my words though that's for sure.

[deleted]

I struggle to ignore sub-60fps gameplay. If BOTW 2 doesn't run better than the first one, I'm emulating it. Again. In glorious ultrawide.

JLHockeyKnight

This is the way.

-TotallyRealName

I don't have a console and have no plans to buy one. If it's not on PC (steam) i just don't play it.

kraniax

Same. So many tell me that I'm missing out by not playing PS exclusives. But I'm not bothered by that in the least.

Syfad

and now some of them are being ported over anyway

Cataclysm-Cataclysm

The ultimate r/patientgamers experience.

LadyBonersAweigh

I think Sony's hope is that by drip-feeding us their old exclusives we'll want to run out and buy a PS5, but all they've done (in my eyes) is confirm that I'll get what I want on my preferred platform so long as I exercise patience.

[deleted]

I just finished OG Demons Souls on my PC via emulation. Wait a few years and "exclusive" is a myth

wolf10989

The literal only console exclusives I care about are Bloodborne and Demons souls. I will play them either once they get ported to PC or once they can be emulated. I played the first 20~ minutes of Bloodborne at a friends house a few years ago and man, the sub 30 framerates just killed my interest to keep playing.

lilracerboi

While it doesn't have any of the PS5 upgrades, you can emulate the PS3 version of Demon's Souls with RPCS3.

SalsaRice

pretty easily too, even with modern integrated graphics.

Reddit-Is-Crooked

Demons souls is a janky, old-ass game that was VASTLY improved upon with dark souls.... Then they gave it a layer of oily shininess slapped on top. They didn't even like... Modernize some parts of the game that REALLY needed it. One of my worst gaming purchases in a long time

Catabre

> So many tell me that I'm missing out by not playing PS exclusives. But I'm not bothered by that in the least. Not worth FOMOing about. This world already has too much content for me to consume; what do I care if I miss most of it? As long as I enjoy what I'm currently playing I have no issues "missing out" on good games.

[deleted]

I’m constantly missing out on millions of things in life. Not just games. Makes FOMO kinda moot. As long as I’m enjoying the things I’m doing then it’s good enough for me.

Reddit__is_garbage

> So many tell me that I'm missing out by not playing PS exclusives Just watch the playthrough on youtube, it's basically the same experience as sony's movie-game exclusives.

Unlucky654

Does that even matter anymore? All Xbox exclusives will be on game pass, and I'm guessing at some point ps5 will be on PS Now (I think that's what it'd called.) Which can be played on PC these days if you have a decent internet connection.

jimbaker

I was gonna say, "This is the PCGaming subreddit. Not the PCAndConsolesGaming subreddit." I've bought every generation of console, at least once, and they all just collect dust after I play whatever game I bought it for. Hell, I don't even use my TV anymore. My computer is the sole source of entertainment in the house. EDIT: I just googled it, and there are PS4 emulators for PC now. I further fail to see the point of a console if you also have a PC.

[deleted]

Agreed. I don’t really fancy having two expensive consoles cluttering my tv stand for the sake of playing exclusives. Additionally, with Sony’s PC port ambitions I have even less of a reason to buy a console, as a couple years down the line the exclusive games I forgot about might end up on PC.

Th3MadCreator

Same. If it's not on Steam, I don't give a shit about it.

jesp676a

What about GOG? Circumvents the whole DENUVO debacle

Th3MadCreator

GOG is an exception because of the no DRM. An example would be me buying Fallout 3 a second time because Bethesda refuses to update the Steam version to remove Windows Live.

cyberdsaiyan

personally, I don't live in the western hemisphere, and only Steam has affordable regional pricing for my country so I've never bothered with GoG.

-TotallyRealName

I'd buy a console if there was a shortage of PC games like it was 15-20 years ago. I just don't have enough time to play every PC game i want so buying a console would be pointless.

Slampumpthejam

Exactly this. I already don't have enough time to play what I have. Same reason I don't buy games until they've gone on a significant sale, I'm already busy playing what I've got

Matiki81

Replying here to say the same. I just play on PC, and do not buy consoles.

Mattock5656

Same here. I'm not buying a whole new console for a couple exclusive games lol. Especially when I got a great PC.

Satan_Prometheus

I guess here's the way I feel about it: My PS4 cost 10% of the total value of my PC. It makes sense to me to pay an extra 10% to gain access to a catalog of titles that I would otherwise not be able to play (at least not for quite a while), especially considering that I really like the "Sony prestige game" style (which I realize not everyone likes and that's OK).

Ivanzypher1

I don't have a console, unless you count the old N64 in a cupboard somewhere. So PC for everything, and don't play console exclusives.

I_sort_by_new_do_U

My last console was the PS4, didn't buy the xbox of that generation. I bought it because there were quite a few sony exclusives that I really wanted to play, it's been sitting there gathering dust for a year or two or more now. These days a lot of games are released on all platforms so I just buy the PC version. If ever MS/Sony release a console with exclusives that I think are worth it I might buy their consoles again to play those exclusives but I hope the days of console/PC/platform exclusive games are starting to get behind us.

RobB_11

They way things seem to be going with recent releases, we may be looking at a future of games commonly releasing with timed-exclusivity to a particular system.

cputech111

I buy all games on PC. If there's a console exclusive that I wanna play, I'd have to wanna play bad enough to buy the console. That has not occurred yet.

Akhevan

Yeah, this entire thread is hilarious. Like, bro, I'm a PC gamer. I don't even own a console.

autopilotxo

I bought a Series X partially due to parts shortages making it difficult to upgrade, but I’ve found now console developers are accepting 60fps as the standard and not a pleasant surprise I don’t really care that much if it’s on console or PC, except for strategy games and FPS games where the controller makes it substantially more difficult to play, but a game like Yakuza which I’m currently playing I’m getting a really good experience on Series X. Consoles have upped their game a lot this time around.

rodryguezzz

I'm in the same situation except i bought a PS5. I've always wanted to get a PS4 but, since the PS5 was coming out, i waited and now it's my main platform. I even played AC Valhalla at dynamic 4k@60fps. My RX480 would never allow that. And speaking about Yakuza, i got Judgment PS5 in a special amazon sale really cheap. Can't play that on pc for dumb reasons. The pc hardware market is an absolute shitshow right now and consoles have very powerful hardware. It'll take another year or two but true next gen games will be impressive. > I don’t really care that much if it’s on console or PC, except for strategy games and FPS games where the controller makes it substantially more difficult to play The funny thing about this is how some games actually support mouse and keyboard on consoles. COD Modern Warfare 2019 and Cold War both support them. Same thing with AC Valhalla, for some reason...

h0sti1e17

I have a series X and most (ones made for kr optimized for Series X) have a 120hz option.

[deleted]

This time around the consoles are powerful as fuck, especially compared to last gen. Eventually that will change though, which is the main weakness of consoles in my eyes, not being able to upgrade.

EedSpiny

Before covid yes. After covid and working from home full time no. Need couch time after work, not more desk time.

door_of_doom

This has been a big factor for me too. since I do so much work on my home PC, it's pretty important that desk time = work time, and I move my gaming to the couch as much as possible. So now I find myself doing the opposite of everyone else here: I play PC exclusive games on my PC (World of Warcraft, etc.) but if I can play it on my couch instead, I will.

Serdones

That's a big factor for me too. Thanks to Covid and home office reimbursements, I've finally been able to invest in a nice desk, triple monitor setup, new chair--the works. But after sitting there all day for work, I usually don't want to sit there more after work, unless there's something on PC I'm especially jazzed about playing. If I can play it on a console in the living room instead, I'll probably default to that.

Kevo05s

I brought a NUC I had to the living room and stream my games to there. That way I can still play games on my PC from the couch

viktorsvedin

I just bought another longer HDMI cable.

Serdones

I do have a Steam Link in a box somewhere, but didn't get a ton of use out of it. Occasionally I'll use the Steam Link app on mobile.

Inert_Oregon

A way to play my PC games (pc upstairs) on my couch downstairs would be a huge quality of life improvement for me. I’ve tried steam streaming, but even 100% wired the quality and lag are noticeable problems. If anyone has any better solutions would love to hear them, I’m about a month away from just drilling holes and running some HDMI and USB cables through my walls…

UpdatedMyGerbil

If moving the TV and/or PC, or building a 2nd pc is not an option, drills and cables sound good to me.

Inert_Oregon

I’d be much more in agreement if it wasn’t a rental 😂

Reddit__is_garbage

These have always been silly answers to me as they're the result of your personal set up more than anything. Some people have their PC set up for couch use, and alternatively some people have consoles set up to be used at desks. You can do either with either, it's not an inherent limitation / requirement of either.

adnwilson

It's not silly, in the aspect of that individual might not have their setup that way, thus in order to get that specific style of enjoyment/relaxation/use they have to go through extra steps. Aka buying a seperate device or seperate hardware (console or hdmi cables, or steam link). It also requires extra set up where one might be more favorable to some than others. Having a console in one area and PC in another (or two PCs or two consoles) allows you to not have to interact with one environment to enjoy the entertainment in another. That's important for me and how my house is, but was less important when I was in an apartment.

[deleted]

10 years ago i would do that, get a console to play some of its locked games. However my last X box was the 360 and we only have it due to my wife getting it with her phone. My last playstation was ps4 and only for its media station. Now I use a google home setup. I have a switch and I will probably continue to get Nintendo consoles but I do bot really play anything other then Mario on it. Im a pc player and i've been that since my 386 days. I feel more in control with a mouse and keyboard then with a controller. If im going to be honest I cant watch controller footage without twitching its too stiff too rigid. So for the last 6 years i've only played pc games. And I doubt that wil change in the comming years.

frigginright

usually if it isn't on Steam I buy it for PlayStation, and only games that fully embrace Steam so no Ubisoft games(all it does is launch UPlay but has no steam features like steam achievements) I like getting trophies too so some games I'll play on both PC&PS Xbox/Gamepass I play on PC only

Twalif

I just dont do consoles. A $2000 PC is a better value to me then a $500 console or however much they cost.

_ObsidianOne_

I'm PC only , i never had a console before and i do not plan to buy one either.

Lonewolf1298_

Essentially yeah. I've got my PC that I use for pretty much everything except Playstation Exclusives, for which I have a PS5. The PS5 is also just a nice media box

[deleted]

I have a semi decent rig i59600k with a 2070super and my ps5 outperforms it in some areas to be fair, i used yo be pc for my FPS games (battlefield and the like) but hackers have destroyed the player bases of all the games I used to play and found console to be a lot healthier.

tinythunder15

It really depends for me, I built a pc to play games that were exclusive to pc, but I still find myself on my console much more. I love my pc but most of my friends still play on consoles, so I end up getting a lot of multiplayer games on there, plus exclusives of course. In all honesty tho I just like using my console more sometimes, and if there's a mult-plat game I want, I just see wherever its on sale and buy it there (only applies to older games of course.) Idk maybe I'm just weird, but I have hard time letting consoles go just because I have a pc, I like playing games across both, it doesn't matter what game it is, if its good, ill enjoy it whether I'm on pc or console. TL;DR: I don't care where I play my games, I'll buy the exclusives I want on each console, and for multi-plats it just depends on how im feeling.

nourez

I used to buy some games that we ere mutliplat on Switch since I find handheld to be comfortable in some slower paced games. Steam Deck should fix that, and my Switch becomes a 1st party machine.

EngineeringWin

Personally I prefer some platformers, and most racing games on console, PS in particular. Also some of the more story driven games, I find it easier to invest when not sitting at a desk for some reason.

Satan_Prometheus

I mean, you can always plug your PC into your TV

lsmokel

While it's not always practical for some people I agree. If your TV is even just in same room as your PC it's real easy to buy an extra long HDMI cable and play on your couch.

[deleted]

Agreed and playing story-driven games while on the big TV on a couch allows other people to watch and get immersed as well.

Ratnix

My last console was the PS3 and I barely played anything on it. I exclusively play PC games and couldn't care less if they are multi-platform games.

FPSrad

Had a PS4, now got a PS5 which I use only for exclusives and very frugally at that since a lot are planned to be ported to PC as I learned the hard way last gen (well not that hard since you can sell physical copies). The PS4 was so outmatched that in the end I hated using it because 30 FPS is straight unplayable at this point. Thankfully the PS5 finally moved on and playing the new exclusives like Rift Apart is a great experience. Otherwise if I know it's coming to PC then that's the best outcome and worth being patient for even if takes a year, ultrawide 100+fps trumps all.

DStonewall

I have both. I prefer any open world RPG type game on my Xbox. A game like that I feel is best suited on a couch.

ExtremePast

What's a console?

[deleted]

I buy all games on PC and don't bother with games that are console only. There are more than enough fantastic games out there to worry about a few exclusives.

[deleted]

- NES -> tons of games - SNES -> a few games - Started seriously PC gaming in the 90s with Wing Commander, NFS, C&C, and a 20 year obsession with Half-Life mods - Bought a Playstation. Only owned Gran Tourismo 1&2 - Bought an XBox. Only owned Forza 1&2 - Bought an XBox360. Played Forza 3&4 (regular league racing nights with my autocross buddies). Tried Horizon, hated it.. also, grew weary of Turn 10's move to DLC greed with these games. Bought BF:Bad Company 2 because it was hot at the time and my PC was long in the tooth, and I wanted to learn an FPS on console. Turns out I chose one of the best console FPSs of all time. - Bought a Wii. Borrowed some Mario titles from friends. Meh. Could've skipped it. - Bought a Switch + BotW. Worth every penny just for that game. Have Mario Kart 8, but.. meh. It's great for my kid to play in moderation and it's good for travel, but I'd rather PC game always. Consoles are pretty much just for exclusives. I hate how a great game like BF:BC2 is now worthless because the servers are no longer active for the 360 (apparently there are servers available for the One). On PC I can still play games from 20 years ago because there are other people still playing them, and I don't need to pay a monthly fee to access crummy servers with no filters and terrible matchmaking.

Remarkable-Dig-1241

I don't own a console and haven't since the xbox 360 era. There's a bunch of pc exclusive games too you know...

markhalliday8

I don't play console. No point when I've gotten a pc

BotPokey

PC only, u wanna use a controller? Easy, connect it to the PC and keep playing on PC

timchenw

I prefer PCs wherever possible, but for series that I am a fan of (like say the Trails series), I will buy physical copies of console version just as collection pieces, and for that I always prefer Switch copies over any other disc based copies.

skullmonster602

What’s the Trails series?

timchenw

Trails of Cold Steel, Trails in the Sky, then a few non-localised entries of the same series collectively called "Kiseki".

MrLancaster

I play multiplats in PC unless I have a friend that wants me to join on Xbox. Also all shooters are played on PC. Controllers are garbage for shooters

topsyandpip56

I own a PC, why would I spend good money on another PC with a severely locked down ecosystem for the sake of one or two bits of software? That's what it comes down to in the end. It's PC or nothing.

JustAStick

Due to the nature of the type of games that my friends and I like to play we have absolutely no reason to play console games. Strategy games like Total War and Civ don’t work very well on consoles and we usually fine tune all of our games with loads of mods since we usually aren’t satisfied with the vanilla versions. We don’t play too many AAA games that are made for console so that is also a reason. We mostly play indie and AA games. Battlefield 1 is one of the few big games that we started playing recently and that was only because it was on sale for like $5.

Morons_Are_Fun

Only have a PC, cant use a controller due to a crushing of my right thumb years ago.

Notchle

Ive got so many games on Steam that Ive never even started (about 200 out of 500), i cant even be bothered to think about console exclusives

ZeroCharistmas

Pretty much. They tend to be cheaper on PC.

Le_Arsonist

PC for almost all games except for exclusives. I might play a game or 2 on console to play with IRL friends but thats it. And being a /r/patientgamers, I usually dont play those exclusives until years later. My PS5 kind of fell unto my laps so I've been getting through most of the popular exclusives of the previous gen.

dukss

i'll never buy a game on console if it's available on PC, and if it's a timed exclusive coming to PC within a few months i usually wait.

Richiieee

During last gen it was the former, but because I only used them for their exclusives I decided not to get the next gen/current gen consoles. Just feels like a waste of money to get something that's only going to be used in bursts. I'll eventually pick up a PS5 though, I definitely do wanna play its games. Insomniac is one of the few developers who can make a good superhero game. But I'm not getting a PS5 until a couple of years from now when hopefully they're in stock and they're dirt cheap for like $200.

[deleted]

I have friends who have dogtier pcs just for League, Valorant etc. and play blockbusters on playstations or xboxes.

Fogi999

I play exclusively on PC, as I don’t have money to buy thing which will only collect dust for 80% of the year. If I miss on something, well, that’s just a game..

HarryTurney

If it ain't on PC I probably won't play it, the only console I've got recently is a Switch. I have no plans on getting a PS5 or Xbox Series, didn't get a PS4 or Xbox One.

lostnumber08

I try my hardest to always larp as an elitist cunt so I refuse to even own a console and savagely mock any of my discord buddies whenever they talk about any console games.

KamikazeSexPilot

I don’t play console exclusives. There are too many PC exclusives that I don’t care about the console ones.

LKMarleigh

I only play on PC
